Anselm of Canterbury is one of the most celebrated medieval thinkers. He is especially famous for the questions he asked and answered. Join our hosts, Lucy, Sophia, and Grace, as they bring their own questions to Dr. Samu Niskanen, professor of Medieval History at the University of Helsinki, Finland, and learn more about this fascinating person—his struggles with a king and his loving and gentle personality. (And learn what Hei Hei means in Finnish.) We are grateful to Reformation Heritage Books for providing two copies of Simonetta Carr's book on Anselm of Canterbury for a giveaway for our listeners. Congratulations to Kate R. from Bronx, NY, Maria S. from Greer, SC, and Stephanie S. from Monrovia, CA, our giveaway winners! Show Notes: How do you say ā€œWhy the God-man?ā€ in Finnish? Miksi Jumala mies Dr. Niskanen said that J.R.R. Tolkien's well known trilogy, The Lord of the Rings, inspired his interest in medieval history!Ā  He also said his favorite Finnish food is karjalanpiirakka, or Karelian pie, which sounds delicious! St. Anselm of Canterbury was an Italian Benedictine monk, philosopher, and theologian during the 11th century. Anselm held the title of Archbishop of Canterbury for 16 years and wrote several important works the Church still uses today. However, he is most widely known for his motto of "Faith Seeking Understanding" (fides quaerens intellectum). In this episode, we are joined by pastor-theologian, Dr. Gavin Ortlund. Dr. Ortlund (PhD, Fuller Theological Seminary) serves as senior pastor of First Baptist Church of Ojai in Ojai, California. He is the author of several books, including Why God Makes Sense in a World That Doesn't: The Beauty of Christian Theism, which will release in October 2021 by Baker Academic. He also runs a YouTube channel called "Truth Unites" which mainly focuses on ecumenical theology and apologetics.

One of these is will-as-instrument, or as the faculty of the will. The other is will-as-use, the act or willing, or the use of that instrument or faculty. (Cur Deus Homo) - https://sourcebooks.fordham.edu/basis/anselm-curdeus.asp Anselm's ontological argument for the existence of God: By definition, God is the greatest possible being that can be imagined. God exists as an idea in the mind. A being that exists as an idea in the mind AND in reality is greater than a being that exists only as an idea in the mind. Thus, if God exists only as an idea in the mind, then we can imagine something that is greater than God. The Night School is an adventurous exercise of greater depth and reflectivity than is normal for most people. For each of these gatherings, we welcome a profound thinker, explorer, philosopher, painter, poet, theologian or mystic from the ancient or nearer past. For example, we may invite Aristotle (4th century BCE) to attend, and through some short and penetrating texts from his writings to give us his best thoughts on friendship. This monthly habit offered by the Faber Institute is meant to be enjoyable, startling at times (surprised by the wisdom we have available to us if we know how to read such authors), and to be an experience of deep thought skillfully invited and engagingly presented.

He was recognized in modern times as the originator of the ontological argument for the existence of God (based on the idea of an absolutely perfect being, the fact of the idea being in itself a demonstration of existence) and the satisfaction theory of the atonement or redemption (based on the feudal theory of making satisfaction or recompense according to the status of a person against whom an offense has been committed, the infinite God being the offended party and humanity the offender). There is incomplete evidence that he was canonized in 1163, though some scholars contend that he was canonized by Pope Alexander VI in 1494.
