In this episode of The Open Door , without special fuss, and certainly without making a scene, we'll explore the life and times of the man behind the scenes. Our welcome guest is our producer and, indeed, the producer of the full range of WCAT Radio & Television programs. The President of En Route Books and Media, the peripatetic Sebastian Mahfood, OP, Ph.D., will join us! Though his heart is in East Texas, St. Louis is the launching pad of his projects and peregrinations. He lives there with his wife, Dr. Stephanie Mahfood, and their children, Alexander and Eva Ruth. Among the questions we'll be asking are the following. Dr. Mahfood, Sebastian, could you tell us about your roots and introduce us to your family? How did you become a lay Dominican and what does it mean for you?Back in the day, and our audience should hear it directly, you wrestled professionally. Were you, even then, a voice from the periphery?Turning away from the distractions of youth, you left the ring for the groves of academe. Your tenure at Kenrick-Glennon Seminary and Holy Apostles College & Seminary was rich: teacher, administrator, and pioneer developer of on-line academic programs. Could you share with us the highlights of your career? You've authored half a dozen books of special interest. To name a few: Catholic Realism, The Narrative Spirituality of Dante's Divine Comedy and Missionary Priests in the Homeland: Our Call to Receive. Could you explain their themes to our audience? The Open Door, we understand, is your longest running WCAT Radio program. How did it start? What is its future? You are not one to let the grass grow under your feet. Could you tell us about your travels, especially in Africa and Europe? Before your retirement, what was the nature of your work as a professor of interdisciplinary and intercultural studies? How does the Institute for Theological Encounter with Science and Technology feature in your professional life? What's next for your publishing house and radio station? Some links: https://www.enroutebooksandmedia.comhttps://www.wcatradio.comhttps://www.faithscience.org
In this segment on Total Information AM, Dr. Stephanie Mahfood, the interim dean at the School of Education at Webster University, sheds light on executive function in children and how parents can support their development. Executive function refers to a set of cognitive processes that help children learn how to learn, including goal setting, planning, organizing, emotional regulation, and self-monitoring. Dr. Mahfood emphasizes that executive function can be taught and improved, just like any other learning strategy. Parents can model executive function skills, be developmentally appropriate and concrete in their instructions, and involve their children in planning and organizing activities. As we approach the school year, these tips can help parents support their kids' executive function skills and overall success.

Ska forever changed the course of music. Not only in Jamaica, but all over the world. Many talented people were involved with its development in the late 50s/60s. But a lot of credit is owed to The Skatalites for perfecting and elevating the genre. Within the Skatalites camp, trombonist Don Drummond was incredibly important and influential. He wrote and/or arranged a majority of their songs. He also brought a somber vibe to the otherwise upbeat genre of music, often writing songs in minor keys. And he also forever linked the trombone with ska, something that remains true to this day, even as the genre has mutated in surprising ways.Today we look at the life and times of Don Drummond. On one hand, he was one of the greatest musical geniuses to ever walk the earth. His impact is immeasurable. On the other hand, he was a troubled and tragic figure, riddled with mental illness. He murdered his girlfriend Anita "Margarita" Mahfood in 1965 and then died a few years later while imprisoned at Bellevue Asylum. We bring on a panel of guests to tell the story of Don's life and to understand the impact that he had. Our panel includes Heather Augustyn, author of Don Drummond: The Genius and Tragedy of the World's Greatest Trombonist, Adam Reeves, who is currently working on a comic book adaptation of Heather's book. It will be called Trombone Man: Ska's Fallen Genius. And lastly, Ken Stewart, who's been the keyboardist/manager for The Skatalites since the late 80s. He's a man of inspiring principle, determination and composed appearance… John Mahfood is a certified public accountant and an experienced business leader who was introduced to the mechanics of the field from as early as he could remember. Most of his early years were spent cultivating his leadership skills by working in the family business; guided by his dad Adeeb Mahfood. Before taking over as CEO of Jamaica Teas, John had already developed a track record of high performance and professionalism, with companies such as Grace and Price Waterhouse cooper and HiLo supermarkets. At the helm of JTL, John has been instrumental in the company's listing on the Jamaica Stock Exchange and expansion to become the largest producer of teas in the Caribbean with almost one-half of its products exported. His ability to sustain such ambitious business models over the decades no doubt has influenced his selection as president of the Jamaica Manufacturers and exporters Association for the term 2021/2022. We talk business affairs and so much more today on the entrepreneurial you, with John Mahfood. Short Form Videos Short-form videos… are ruling supreme among digital marketing strategies and facilitators, advertisers and consumers alike, all want to capitalize on its reign…at least while it's a hot topic. Video marketing isn't that new, it became mainstream around 2010, offering biteable content used to drive sales, create engagement and raise awareness among other things. Shorts on the other hand, in particular those influenced by social media usage, emerged fairly recent, around 2020. Whether they are created to publicize a big business campaign or promote a Do It Yourself home video, the value of shorts is undeniable. In many cases it's a free app feature that's easily accessible, it gives people quick and easy ways to consume information and since people tend to share the video at twice the rate of any other media, it's one of the sure ways to get good returns on investments. So what are the top short-form video platforms available for free and what are some benefits of using them…asking for a friend you say? Well, we've got you and your friend covered. If you're not leading a large budget marketing activity that requires professional video production, you might want to consider using a few of these… Tik Tok-the trendsetter of short-form videos on social media. Not only are users enabled by features that allow the use of graphics, music, and imported media, packed in an easy to edit the recording, but also brands have access to a creative space filled with an audience of millions around the world, eager to explore and express creativity like never before…all most brands have to do is start a challenge that is highly likely to create a buzz around a product or service. Instagram Reel. The Instagram reel was launched in August 2020 as a challenge to tik tok but ascended in popularity when India and the USA banned the use of tik tok in their countries. Which left former users turning to Instagram for a substitution that gave them the opportunity to churn out 15-30 seconds videos, highlighting pretty much anything. Like tik tok, reels on Instagram auto-play one after another and is giving dreamers and celebrities both a massive opportunity to earn from the creative showcase of talent and rotation of music on the platform. Snapchat spotlight was also created to rival tik tok. It features short videos in a continuous loop that users can use to advertise as well as get monetary incentives for videos with a high number of views. In February 2021 alone, over 124 million Snapchat users watched spotlight videos, so the chances of being seen are quite decent. So the next time you think about short-form videos, think about taking advantage of any one of these to help widen your audience reach and maximise profits. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/the-entrepreneurial-you/message

This episode is a two-parter! On the first half of the show, we welcome internationally bestselling author of eleven novels for teens and adults, Jillian Cantor. Jillian joins us to discuss her new atmospheric historical novel, BEAUTIFUL LITTLE FOOLS, which will be released on February 1st! The book is a reimagining of THE GREAT GATSBY where the female characters take center stage. On the second half of the show we greet the writing team of Jenny Judson and Danielle Mahfood who met in high school and bonded over a mutual love of historical fiction and romance novels. They join us to discuss their October 2021 novel THE LAST SEASON—a juicy Victorian-era saga of forbidden love, social upheaval, and changing fortunes features an unlikely romance between a well-to-do heiress and a stable boy.
After five years of working on their debut novel, The Last Season, Jenny Judson and Danielle Mahfood have officially gone from high school best friends to published co-authors. Jenny and Danielle join Zibby to discuss how they managed to write in one cohesive voice despite being both geographically distant and two individual people, the way in which their partnership held them accountable to the work over the course of many years, and why their differences in taste only served to make their story stronger.Purchase on Amazon.Amazon: https://amzn.to/3d21Uw2 See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
It's hard enough to write a book, harder still to get it published. Throw in two co-authors with two full-time careers and it nearly seems impossible. Not for Danielle Mahfood and Jenny Judson, lifelong friends who over 11 years wrote and eventually saw published the Victorian historic novel The Last Song. Danielle and Jenny discuss the process involved in taking on a massive creative endeavor while maintaining their own careers and the path they carved for themselves in order to go from part-time recreational writers to published authors. Having to find time for research, writing, and processing both naysayers and rejection, Danielle and Jenny share the creative journey they took to success. Learn more about your ad choices. The Last Season is a collaboration between Jenny Judson and Danielle Mahfood, who met in high school and shared a mutual love of historical fiction and romance novels. Instead of passing notes in class, Jenny and Danielle would write short excerpts from imaginary novels that featured themselves and their classmates as characters caught up in tales of romance and adventure. Many years later, after cheering for opposite teams at Harvard-Yale games, they came together in New York City to begin writing The Last Season, inspired both by the Victorian period and the financial crisis of 2008.
Jenny Judson and Danielle Mahfood accomplished every girlfriends' childhood dream. They wrote a book together and published it! Their first book, The Last Season, is newly released and the perfect holiday escape book. It is a historical fiction, romance novel set in the Victorian Age that follows the relationships of two childhood acquaintances, Crispin and Cassie. Both Cassie and Crispin are very bright and fiercely loyal to their families. A series of events pulls them apart and then back together in the most unexpected way. The Last Season is charming, interesting, and romantic in the most delicious way. It is a rare book where both main character's individuality is maintained but Judson and Mahfood pull it off.In this podcast episode, Jenny and Danielle answer my questions about the creation of The Last Castle. I had to know how two people can write a book together. We discuss the themes in the book and their philosophy on writing the "sexy parts." We also talk about the plans for their next novel which may feature one of my favorite characters from The Last Season. Jim Mahfood’s art is unlike anything found in the pages of comics. He’s gonzo, eclectic, kinetic, unable to be jammed into any one category. On top of comics, his art has graced animation, galleries, advertisements and anywhere there’s a surface to make art. Growing up in Saint Louis, Missouri, Mahfood (aka Food One) fell in love with comics and hip-hop (art in general). He would go on to make his own comics as a teenager, eventually attending the Kansas City Art Institute. Art and comic books are in Mahfood’s blood. There’s no way he wouldn’t throw himself into his work and create art professionally. During his career, Mahfood has worked with every heavy hitting comic book publisher and has strong roots as a freelancer. Some of his comics work includes the Clerks comic (written by Kevin Smith), Everybody Loves Tank Girl, his creator-owned Grrl Scouts series, MarijuanaMan (with Ziggy Marley & Joe Casey), Los Angeles Ink Stains, Howard the Human, Shitty Dark Knight and countless other projects. Wits’ End host Shah Emami and Mahfood talk about the dedication needed to be an artist, dealing with rejection and criticism, the impact of Frank Miller’s work and their favorite Miller comics, the future of creative freedom, the sense of community in comic shops and more! While we cannot achieve salvation on our own merits, there are things we can do to prepare ourselves to receive God’s grace, which is his activity within us, and this is how we are called to live our Lenten Season. Such gifts of grace are described by Dante Alighieri in his Divine Comedy, the centerpiece of which is Mount Purgatory, the ladder that enables our return to God. The seven stories of the mountain deal with pride, envy, wrath, sloth, avarice, gluttony and lust in light of their corresponding virtues of, respectively, humility, caritas, meekness, zeal, liberality, abstinence and chastity. This presentation will lead participants through a discussion of the Purgatorio and engage them in a spiritual exercise dealing with these seven virtues. (Scheduled to be Recorded and Aired on Thursday, March 15, 2018, at 4:00 pm Eastern / 3:00 pm Central)Dr. Mahfood earned his PhD in Literature at Saint Louis University in St. Louis, MO, and has written and taught on Dante's Divine Comedy for over twenty years and in 2016 created a CD series on the Comedy for Now You Know Media. International priests have served the Roman Catholic Church in the United States since its inception. With congregations consisting largely of immigrants or Spanish and French speaking Catholics absorbed by the expansion of US territory, it was only natural that the clergy reflected the remarkable mixture of ethnicities in the Church. New communities lacked the ‘home-grown’ vocations of more established communities, and the nascent Church needed to recruit or welcome priests and religious from other countries and cultures. Each missionary priest and seminarian (and missionary religious sister and nun) brings with him (or her) graces and challenges for the receiving community and for himself (for more on this, see the Guidelines for Receiving Pastoral Ministers in the United States, 3rd Edition, 2014). This presentation is part of the Intercultural Competencies work in which Holy Apostles has been involved this academic year. (Recorded and Aired on Friday, January 19, 2018.)Dr. Mahfood earned his PhD in Literature at Saint Louis University in St. Louis, MO, and served as the Associate Director of the Parresia Project, now hosted out of the Sacred Heart Institute in Huntington, NY. He and the project's director, Msgr. Richard Henning, are releasing a book on this subject entitled Missionary Priests in the Homeland: Our Call to Receive, which will be available through En Route Books and Media in early February, 2018.
