Voices of Renewal is a series devoted to rediscovering the renewing power of the Holy Spirit throughout the history of God’s Church. Each episode, we will interview a leader in the field of Church History, Theology or Ministry about a key figure and how they thought of and experienced the renewing power of God in their time. It is our desire to not only learn from these Fathers and Mothers of the faith, but to seek God’s renewal in our own time in name of Jesus through the power of the Holy Spirit.

    Listen in to this special episode of Voices of Renewal as we hear from leading Christian scholar, Dr. Glen L. Thompson, on his new book Jingjiao: The Earliest Christian Church in China. Thompson presents the history of the Persian church's mission to China with rigor and clarity. While Christianity remained a minority and “foreign” religion in the Middle Kingdom, it nonetheless attracted adherents among indigenous Chinese and received imperial approval during the Tang Dynasty. Though it was later suppressed alongside Buddhism, it resurfaced in China and Mongolia in the twelfth century. Thompson also discusses how the modern unearthing of Chinese Christian texts has stirred controversy over the meaning of Jingjiao to recent missionary efforts in China.

    Macrina the Younger (327 – 379) was an early Christian saint. Macrina was elder sister of Basil the Great and Gregory of Nyssa, two early leading Christian theologians. Gregory of Nyssa wrote a work entitled Life of Macrina in which he describes his sister's sanctity and asceticism throughout her life. Macrina lived a chaste and humble life, devoting her time to prayer and the spiritual education of her younger brother Peter.     Teresa of Ávila (1515-1582), also called St. Teresa of Jesus, was a Spanish noblewoman, Carmelite nun, and religious mystic. She is also one of only four women to be recognized as a “Doctor of the Church” by the Catholic Church. During her life, Teresa helped bring renewal to the Carmelite order for men and women.     George Jeffreys (1889-1962) was a Welsh evangelist who founded the Elim Pentecostal Church.     George Whitefield was an Anglican cleric and evangelist who was one of the founders of Methodism and the evangelical movement. After ordination, Whitefield immediately began preaching, but he did not settle as the minister of any parish. Rather he became an itinerant preacher and evangelist in North America, where he preached a series of revivals that became part of the "Great Awakening". It is reported that Whitefield preached at least 18,000 times to perhaps 10 million listeners in Great Britain and her American colonies.     St. Anselm of Canterbury was an Italian Benedictine monk, philosopher, and theologian during the 11th century. Anselm held the title of Archbishop of Canterbury for 16 years and wrote several important works the Church still uses today. However, he is most widely known for his motto of "Faith Seeking Understanding" (fides quaerens intellectum). In this episode, we are joined by pastor-theologian, Dr. Gavin Ortlund. Dr. Ortlund (PhD, Fuller Theological Seminary) serves as senior pastor of First Baptist Church of Ojai in Ojai, California. He is the author of several books, including Why God Makes Sense in a World That Doesn't: The Beauty of Christian Theism, which will release in October 2021 by Baker Academic. He also runs a YouTube channel called "Truth Unites" which mainly focuses on ecumenical theology and apologetics.
