This is for athletes hovering in and around national level over cross country, 5000m, 10000m, or the marathon but haven't quite made the breakthrough. Aoife is a proud member of Eagle A.C. and has represented the club over a multitude of distances from 5km to marathon.  In her late teens Aoife attended Arkansas Tech University on an athletics scholarship and showed great promise as a junior athlete, representing Ireland in the Euro XC in 2005. Unfortunately, injury prevented her from reaching her full athletic potential at that time. Coming home to Ireland, she took time to recover, rebuild and reignite a love of running. A New Year's resolution to run the Cork City Marathon in 2015 paved the way for her to commence her marathon running journey which has seen her return to the top step of the podium and build on her achievements in running. With some key race successes, coupled with changes to her career and her training in recent years,  Aoife Cooke has run her way into the history books and has ambitious and exciting plans to excel even further in her chosen sport of marathon running. This was a fun chat with Aoife, her humility and positivity shines through in this episode, we get some incredible insight to her journey in sport and once again are reminded that our dreams and goals are never too far out of reach with courage, commitment and a desire to succeed.

Aoife Cooke had a promising junior Cross Country career that brought her to Arkansas Tech on a scholarship. She initially had success at college, but she struggled with osteopenia, the resulting injuries cut her college time short and she returned home. With the pause in her running career, she dropped off the radar, and she went through a challenging time as her running future looked uncertain. We dive into this and explore the steps, she took to have run the fastest marathon ever run by an Irish woman in Ireland in Dublin 2019 2:32:34. Coached by John Starrett, she has run the 5th fastest marathon time ever recorded by an Irish female runner. Her goal following Dublin is to achieve Olympic qualification. She needed more than motivation, to be the runner she is today. And I know you’ll leave this conversation feeling inspired. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/marcus-brown9/support

Independent Living Units were built roughly from the 1950s to the 80s as a form of housing for older people - but since government funding for the program ended, nobody's really looked at the conditions or issues for the many thousands of people still living in them. Aoife Cooke recently completed a report - Independent Voices - that investigates the experiences of people living in Independent Living Units. We talk about that research and the pros and cons of ILUs as a form of housing for older people, and some recommendations for improving them.
