In this episode of Trail Society, Corrine Malcolm, Keely Henninger, and Hillary Allen dive into one of the biggest weeks in trail running, the 2025 UTMB Finals. From brutal weather and historically high dropout rates to some of the closest top-10 finishes ever, the crew breaks down all the drama across OCC, CCC, and UTMB. They highlight standout wins from Jim Walmsley, Ruth Croft, and Francesco Puppi, celebrate trailblazing performances from athletes representing countries new to the UTMB stage, and reflect on the growing but still uneven women's participation numbers. Beyond the race results, they explore what it means for athletes to double between UTMB, Hardrock, and upcoming World Championships, and touch on the ever-buzzing brand scene in Chamonix. Beyond the race, the crew highlights systemic challenges in sport: Strava and For All Mothers+ awarded $2,000 grants to 50 athlete-mothers to cover childcare costs and training expenses, directly addressing the “motherhood penalty” that prevents so many women from competing at the highest level. Tune in for a mix of insights, stories from the ground, and the unique perspective only this crew can bring.
UTMB delivered a huge weekend of trail racing, with Tom Evans winning the men's race and Ruth Croft taking the women's title to complete the UTMB triple. Georgia Taylor Brown has made her ambitions clear, she wants Olympic gold in Los Angeles in 2028. We discuss what it will take to get her there. At the T100 French Riviera, Ashleigh Gentle produced another world class performance to win the women's race, while Hayden Wilde backed up once again to take the men's title ahead of Jelle Geens and Samuel Dickinson. The WTCS French Riviera races were just as stacked. Matt Hauser stayed perfect this season with victory in the men's event, and Cassandre Beaugrand delivered a huge win in front of the home crowd in the women's race. We also recap Zell am See 70.3, where Kat Matthews took the win in the women's field and Fabian Kraft claimed the men's title, continuing his rise in the Pro Series standings. Scott Johnston, fresh off coaching both the men's and women's winners of UTMB in the same year, shares his coaching philosophy with Dirk Friel. Scott emphasizes the value of consistent, disciplined training rooted in tried-and-true principles. Not through flashy shortcuts, just a thoughtful blend of science, individualized pacing, and real-world adaptability. Throughout the conversation, Scott explains how he tailored training for Ruth Croft and Tom Evans, highlighting that while every Evoke Endurance training plan is built on a shared set of core principles, the real magic lies in personalizing workouts to each athlete's unique needs and life circumstances. Hear how Scott's approach balances rigorous data—like lactate testing and measured thresholds—with the all-important "soft" skills of daily check-ins, building trust, and keeping athletes mentally anchored during major events. One clear takeaway: success is less about pushing past your limits at every session and more about knowing when to hold back, adapt, or shift focus. Scott also dives into the technical side: steep treadmill sessions to build fatigue resistance, the smart use of poles, innovative altitude and heat strategies, and the power of true athlete-coach communication. 00:00 Race Preparation 05:17 Prepared for Rainy Conditions 09:08 Running Takes Backseat to New Priorities 11:00 Speed vs. Endurance Training Balance 15:56 Feared Treadmill Workout 17:04 Lactate-Controlled Workout Intensity 22:54 Technological Advancements Elevate Athletic Performance 24:32 Beyond Data: Understanding Athletes' Internal Load 28:14 Safe Training Limits Prevent Injuries 32:33 Coaches as Essential Partners

We loaded up on sympathy baguettes for UTMB racers before recording this great episode! The main topic was digesting everything from UTMB week, including Jim Walmsley reinforcing his GOAT status, Courtney Dauwalter reinforcing hers, the coolest coaching story ever from Scott Johnston (who coached Ruth Croft and Tom Evans to UTMB wins), training takeaways, and so much more! The science breakdown looked at a new study that is being used to argue that low carb doesn't hurt high-intensity performance. We dive into the study design and statistics to show why that's the wrong conclusion. And this one had so many great topics! Other topics: going dark on the trails, Megan's new fast shoe, our trail supershoe rundown, the new Champion Plan for 100k to 100 miles, the minimum dose of passive heat training, using weight vests, what makes a good coach, a relationship question, relying on liquid carbs, engaging the glutes, drinking from streams, and climbing form. What's for dinner? We'll take the European Aid Station--baguettes, sausage, cheese, sparkling water, techno music, and being unable to drop out due to the language barrier. We love you all! An interview with Ruth Croft after her win of the 2025 UTMB. In this interview, Ruth talks about how she had to switch her strategy from focusing on splits to just surviving the bad weather in the night, how having a DNF from hypothermia at Transvulcania earlier this year helped her manage the weather conditions, and how a 10-year relationship with the UTMB races, which started with the 20215 CCC, finally culminated with a win on the big loop.

We're taking some time off as 2022 has been a whole mood (as the youth say). So for the next few weeks we've got our annual summer editions. This week we have a colab! This is an interview that the one and only Ruth Croft did with the team at the Between Two Beers podcast late last year. We heard it and thought, as many times as we've had Ruth on DCR this is something DCR listeners would love to hear! There's plenty we learned about Ruth, including her trucking days. And she knows some shade our way too, so that's always good. And, look a huge thanks to our mates at Between Two Beers, Steven Holloway and Seamus Marten. If you haven't heard it before, we'd encourage you to take a listen - they do some really great deep-dive interviews with some really interesting people - enjoy!Episode Links Ruth Croft Between Two Beers Podcast The ACCSCOTT Running Coros NZJulbo Eyewear UltrAspireirunfarGivealitle for Kerry's Rehab Dirt Church Radio on InstagramDirt Church Radio on Twitter Dirt Church Radio on Facebook Dirt Church Radio on PatreonCieleFurther Faster New Zealand
Kia ora e te whānau. This week, Matt and Eugene make the trek from Nor' Westland into the wilds of the wilds of suburbia to join the Dwight to our Taupin, the Ridgeley to our Michael, The Afanasieff to our Carey, the indomitable Andrew McDowall, to look back with the beginnings of fondness (or at least a sense of thank fond that's over) at the year that we didn't need, nor indeed want … 2022. The highs, the lows, the excitement of looking forward to races not being canceled, maybe. It's been a trip. Ruth Croft bestrode the world like a laconic Atlanta, and some other people had a pretty good year in running too. We discuss our Greatest Runs Ever of 2022, then change into our penguin suits for the Dirt Church Radio Awards (the awards ceremony with neither awards nor ceremony) and engage in a bloody good chat about the sport and the culture we love … running. This is the final “proper” DCR of 2022, and we want to thank you all more than ever for the engagement, encouragement, and the aroha that you have shown us this year. We feel a distinct privilege to do what we do, and can't wait to come back refreshed for 2023. Meri Kirihimete and please, enjoy!Episode Links Digicake StudioSCOTT Running Coros NZJulbo Eyewear UltrAspireirunfarGivealitle for Kerry's Rehab Dirt Church Radio on InstagramDirt Church Radio on Twitter Dirt Church Radio on Facebook Dirt Church Radio on PatreonCieleFurther Faster New Zealand
If the West Coast of the South Island were a parent - it would be punching well above its weight in producing some of Aotearoa's most successful athletes. Among the talented pool to have originated there is Ruby Tui, Ruth Croft and Paul Coll. Josh Komen's a resident too and he's been having a close look at what makes the region so special when it comes to sporting success. He talks to Jesse.
Today's NZ Sporting history is about ultra-marathon running. Last year Ruth Croft won the Tarawera Ultra Marathon, the first person - man or woman - across the line. This made her the first woman ever to claim the outright title. And if 102 kilometres wasn't enough, this year she went to California and won the female title in the 2022 Western States 100 MILE race - that's 161 kilometres. Ruth talks to Jesse about getting started in the extreme sport and becoming so good at it.
