Few Democratic officials have been more outspoken in opposition to the Trump Administration than J. B. Pritzker, the governor of Illinois. He seems almost to relish antagonizing Trump, who has suggested Pritzker should be in jail. Meanwhile, ICE and Border Patrol have targeted Chicago, and elsewhere in Illinois, with immigration sweeps more aggressive than what Los Angeles experienced earlier this year; they refused to pause the raids even on Halloween. The President has called Chicago a “hell hole,” but, in Pritzker's view, immigration sweeps do nothing to reduce crime. “He's literally taking F.B.I., D.E.A., and A.T.F.—which we work with all the time—he's taking them out of their departments and moving them over to ICE, and they're not . . . helping us catch bad guys,” Pritzker says in an interview with the reporter Peter Slevin. “He's creating mayhem on the ground because you know what he wants? He wants troops on the ground in American cities, and the only way he can get that done is by proving that there's some sort of insurrection or revolution or rebellion.” And yet, as Slevin tells David Remnick, a governor's power to resist the federal government depends largely on the courts. Thus far, “the district courts have acted quite favorably toward the plaintiffs in various lawsuits against these actions by the federal government.” New episodes of The New Yorker Radio Hour drop every Tuesday and Friday. Dan Slevin reviews The Cats of Gokogu Shrine (in cinemas), Dìdi (Netflix) and Killers of the Flower Moon (Kanopy).
In this episode of The Rewatch Party, Nick, Anthony, and Elise dive into the stylishly twisty world of Lucky Number Slevin, a 2006 crime thriller that blends mistaken identity, organized crime, and razor-sharp dialogue. With its neo-noir vibes and a star-studded cast including Josh Hartnett, Morgan Freeman, Ben Kingsley, and Bruce Willis, the hosts debate whether the film's complex narrative still holds up on a rewatch—or if it relies too heavily on its signature plot twist. Nick takes the lead in unpacking the film's layered storytelling, appreciating the clever screenplay and unique direction by Paul McGuigan. Anthony, ever the crime film connoisseur, praises the film's stylish approach and the way it balances tension with wit. Elise, on the other hand, questions whether the film's heavy reliance on plot reveals makes it less rewatchable once you know the outcome, raising a solid point about how much surprise contributes to enjoyment. The group discusses the performances across the board, especially Josh Hartnett's portrayal of the charming and enigmatic Slevin. There's spirited debate over whether Lucky Number Slevin leans more toward cool and clever or just a little too self-aware for its own good. Bruce Willis's presence is noted for bringing a stoic intensity to the film, while Freeman and Kingsley provide gravitas in their roles as rival crime bosses. Ultimately, the trio lands in mixed territory on rewatchability. While the film's style and sharp dialogue keep it engaging, the hosts agree that a first viewing delivers the biggest impact. However, for fans of twisty narratives and cool crime flicks, Lucky Number Slevin may still find its way back onto the screen every now and then. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0425210/
