In the News - Big changes: Iconic U.S. ammo brands sold, federal hunting access funding threatened, and colleges embrace social media influencer courses. Join radio hosts Rebecca Wanner aka 'BEC' and Jeff ‘Tigger' Erhardt (Tigger & BEC) with The Bend Radio Show & Podcast, your news outlet for the latest in Outdoors & Western Lifestyle News! Season 5, Episode 221 Key Developments Impacting Iconic Brands, Public Hunting, and Education Iconic American Ammo Brands Sold to Czech Company The iconic American ammunition brands Federal, Remington, Hevi Shot, Speer, and CCI have new ownership. Sold in November 2024, these legendary names in ammo were sold to the Prague-based Czechoslovak Group (CSG) for $2.225 billion. This acquisition marks the end of a 2.5-year process involving scrutiny and approval by U.S. regulatory bodies. Under its new parent company, The Kinetic Group, led by CEO Jason Vanderbrink, these brands are set to thrive with long-term investments that aim to boost innovation and production. Vanderbrink states that moving away from the pressures of short-term returns will allow the brands to focus on delivering better and more reliable ammunition for consumers. Why the Sale Happened The ammo brands were previously owned by Vista Outdoor, a company managing a mix of outdoor and ammunition businesses. A strategic decision was made to split the two sectors due to differing business models and investor demands. Ammunition, a volatile commodity market, didn't align well with the stable growth expectations of lifestyle brands like Bushnell and Primos. National Security Concerns Addressed The sale raised national security concerns, prompting an investigation by the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States (CFIUS). Despite opposition from some politicians, including then Senator JD Vance (now current Vice-president), the sale was cleared in June 2024. CSG emphasized its commitment to supporting U.S. military, law enforcement, hunters, and allied nations, along with its nearly 4,000 American employees. The Future of American Ammo With additional resources from CSG, which also owns a majority stake in Fiocchi, The Kinetic Group is poised to grow and innovate. Manufacturing plants like Federal's in Minnesota and Remington's in Arkansas will continue to play a key role in supplying high-quality ammunition for American and allied markets. Without these funds, states cannot expand or create new access programs, leaving hunters with fewer opportunities. Historically funded by the farm bill, the program received $50 million in 2018 but saw reduced funding with recent extensions. The 2025 farm bill extension omitted funding entirely, marking the second consecutive year without adequate support. States participating rely on these grants to incentivize private landowners to allow public hunting and improve habitats. Existing programs will likely remain stable for now, thanks to state-level funding, but the gap limits expansion and new initiatives. Conservation leaders are advocating for Congress to include $150 million for the Voluntary Public Access and Habitat Incentive Program in the next farm bill. Bipartisan proposals to triple the program's funding offer hope, though Congress has struggled to reach agreements. The program's benefits extend beyond hunting, generating millions in economic activity and supporting jobs. Advocates urge sportsmen to contact lawmakers to push for a farm bill that secures funding for VPA-HIP and boosts public land access. The trend sees schools now taking content creation seriously as a viable career choice. The influencer marketing industry is valued at over $21 billion and is a favorite field among young people. Arkansas Tech University is even offering a "Bachelor of Arts Degree in Social Media Influencing." Football and beer tend to go together without much thought. But in places like Pope County, Arkansas, alcohol is noticeably absent from tailgate coolers, plastic Solo cups, and concession stands. That's because the area, which is home to Arkansas Tech University, is also one of the state's 29 dry counties, where access to alcohol is restricted thanks to political influence, conservative mindsets, and tradition left from the time of Prohibition. In his first piece for Good Beer Hunting titled “No Blitz — How Arkansas Tech University Fans Tailgate in a Dry County,” freelance writer Brian Sorenson portrays a small, but proud slice of the American South, where sports like football dominate much of the culture. That culture, he says, lags behind the more liberal coastal areas of the United States, but that doesn't mean it's less worthy of attention. In our conversation, he describes his hope for readers and listeners to set aside their notions of what they think Arkansas is like, and to instead experience it through fresh eyes and open minds. You'll hear about his background in beer, football, writing, and the state of Arkansas, where he grew up used to rowdy sports fans fueled by alcohol. For this story, he was fascinated by the idea of separating the two, and shares some of the surprises he came across while writing the piece. It's an insider's look at seemingly contradictory ideologies, and it's likely you'll walk away with a new framework from which to view a different, but beautiful, way of life.

Dive into a captivating chat with Carrie Phillips, the Chief Communications and Marketing Officer at UA Little Rock. Back in 2008, starting as the Assistant Director of New Media at Arkansas Tech University, Carrie faced a media coverage challenge. When TV stations wouldn't visit their remote campus, she ingeniously produced and scripted her own footage, sending it directly to them. The result? Widespread local media attention and a surprise feature on the Today Show. This resourceful approach didn't just amplify their campus stories but also profoundly shaped Carrie's career: strengthening her strong on- and off-campus partnerships, leading her to speak at national conferences, and underscoring her creative and imaginative thinking even 15 years later during her CMO interview. S03E11 – the Role of HBCUs in Rural Education, an Interview with President Logan Hampton of Lane College. In this episode of the Rural Voice, we interviewed Dr. Logan Hampton President of Lane College in Jackson Tennessee. We open the discussion discussing the role of Jackson Tennessee as both a small urban and rural location. We discuss how perception of what constitutes rural versus urban can vary depending on students experience and perception. The episode shifts to discussing Lane College which is a traditional black college in Tennessee. Dr Hampton discusses the demographics of the types of students who attend, offering accessibility to students who might not consider higher education. Lane is housed on a former plantation and is now an institution of higher education. This story demonstrates how spaces with a strained history can be repurposed to serve students in need. We discussed how HBCUs serve an important role in rural education. Lane has a religious affiliation, and we discuss how religion can also provide a framework for values and ethics. Dr Hampton discusses why higher education spaces can be capitalized on finding common ground for difficult conversations. He proposes that higher education should be used for hosting and facilitating difficult conversations to find common ground. In other words, let's stop focusing on the differences and find love of our fellow people. We end the episode discussing enrollment numbers nationally and locally at Lane regarding people of color and gender. Bio Logan Hampton was named 10th President of Lane College by the Lane College Board of Trustees on June 12, 2014. Dr. Hampton earned a doctorate in higher education from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, a master's degree in student personnel services from Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, La., and a bachelor's degree in biology from Arkansas Tech University. Prior to coming to Lane College, Dr. Hampton served in numerous student services capacities at UALR including Vice Provost for Student Affairs. Before UALR, Hampton held positions at Texas A & M University, Texas Christian University, and the University of Central Arkansas. In addition to working as a higher education administrator, Dr. Hampton is an ordained elder in full connection of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church (CME). He served twenty-four years as a pastor in the Arkansas Region of the First Episcopal District of the CME Church. He and his wife, Susan, are the parents of three adult children: Elise, Crystal and Logan III.

In 1934, tens of thousands of Communist guerillas fled Jiangxi, in an extended retreat through hazardous terrain to Shaanxi in the north, while under fire from their Nationalist enemies. The Long March, as it became to be known, helped build the legend of the Chinese Communist Party, and of its leader Mao. While on the Long March, Mao had a daughter, who was left behind to live with a local family due to the trek's dangers That event inspired Michael X. Wang's debut novel Lost in the Long March (Overlook Press, 2022), about one couple who faced a similar decision–whether to leave their child behind–and that decision's repercussions decades later. In this interview, Michael and I talk about the Long March, what makes it a great setting for a novel, and how its story aligns with many other family stories from modern China. Michael X. Wang was born in Fenyang, a small coal-mining city in China's mountainous Shanxi province. His short story collection, Further News of Defeat (Autumn House Press: 2020), won the 2021 PEN/Robert W. Bingham Prize for Debut Short Story Collection and was a finalist for the 2021 CLMP Firecracker Award for Fiction. Michael's work has appeared in the New England Review, Greensboro Review, Day One, and Juked, among others. He is currently an assistant professor of English and creative writing at Arkansas Tech University and lives in Russellville, Arkansas. He can be followed on Twitter at @MichaelXWang3.
