Coronavirus cases are once again rising in Europe and across the world. The World Health Organisation has said that countries shouldn't be giving out booster jabs for the rest of the year, but in the UK we're offering third shots to people as young as 40. Meanwhile, only 3% of people in low-income countries have had a single dose. Covid vaccines may have prevented hundreds of thousands of deaths in the UK, but who is missing out on the global vaccine rollout? Why can't poorer countries get hold of the Covid vaccine? And how can we change the rules of our international economy so that everyone is protected during the pandemic? For the last episode of the series, Ayeisha is joined by Achal Prabhala, writer, researcher, and coordinator of the AccessIBSA project, and Saiorse Fitzpatrick, advocacy manager at STOPAIDS. - Listen to a previous episode on vaccine nationalism with Miriam Brett and Tahir Amin https://neweconomics.org/2021/02/weekly-economics-podcast-vaccine-nationalism - Read more about the WTO proposal by India and South Africa to temporarily waive intellectual property on Covid-19 vaccines, treatments and related technologies. For the final podcast of 2020, I'm very pleased to announce the return of my good friend Krowne. Gary Crowne aka Krowne is an electronica, hip-hop and techno DJ, producer and promoter from Edinburgh who’s been releasing music since 2010 under the aliases Krowne and Ghost By Nature, he was a core artist within the Black Lantern Music Collective and one half of duo Kromatic with Asthmatic Astronaut. Krowne is label boss at Precog Records, running it along with his brother Alan Crowne who is the Art Director for the label. Things really started to take off for Krowne when he won the Orbital ‘Wonky” Beatport remix competition in 2011. Over the following years he’s had a multitude of renowned releases on labels including Beat Machine Records, BLM and GTA Digital, putting out everything from techno, house, hip hop, electronica, breaks to sci-fi crunk ……….. even original soundtracks. He’s worked with wicked remixers including Ast Ast, G. Kemp, Gary the Apprentice and Coffee & Blood and his hip hop output has seen him working with MCs the world over including Questionmark Embargo, Harlequinade and Texture. Everything he puts out reaches stratospheric heights with each release getting over 20,000 downloads or more. He’s had many of his tracks played on respected radio stations and Kromatic have even played live on BBC Radio 1. In 2013, ably assisted by Jack Simon, Rendezyvoodoo and Strut, he formed Edinburgh techno club night Fourbyfour. The night rapidly took off, show casing guests like Hermanez, Phil Kieran and Ramiro Lopez. Lately Fourbyfour launched a sister night called Fourplay which ventures into the realms of hip hop, funk and a more open minded music policy……..  another successful venture. He’s also a freelance sound designer, film and commercials music producer and sound editor. He’s also involved with 3D logo sound design, creating music for BBCs The Social and making several of his own music videos. Krowne has many more releases in the pipeline building on the previous successes of his multi genre skills. Along with running his successful club nights and a multitude of other side projects, he’s not short on work. He’s got so much musical experience to give to the masses. No matter what this guy concentrates his skills on, it always comes up gold. “Mr. Statham, would you consider giving San Francisco to Hawaii?” —Former Calif. Assemblyman Bill Morrow (Oceanside-R) About: If President Kennedy’s moon-shot set the tone that no challenge was too difficult, Donald Trump’s presidential victory reminds us that anything is possible, even creating a new U.S. state. In Northern California, like the proper north, there’s been a generation of folks who believe the time for 51 is now. And given the state of the current political landscape, now may be their best shot. Far from the reach of Sacramento, they’re living off the dream of a failed 1941 movement to split from the Golden State and live out their ideals in the name of the late president Thomas Jefferson. The first part of this two-part story welcomes you to the State of Jefferson. It’s an episode that dives into some of the history, the people, and most importantly, the reasons why thousands of ranchers, farmers and folks from Northern California passionately want nothing more than to leave. In 2010, a medical case report was published about a man with inflammatory bowel disease. The man had a serious case of a condition called ulcerative colitis, and was facing the prospect of having a section of his intestine completely removed. But remarkably, the man was able to cure himself and achieve almost complete remission – by infecting himself with parasitic worms. This month's episode is about new research which may shed light on how a parasite can end up curing disease, rather than causing it.
