In this episode of Talkin' After Hours, we delve into the world of integrated pest management (IPM) and the alarming decline of insect populations, referred to by some as the 'insect apocalypse.' Entomologist Dr. Anthony Rice discusses the significant role insects play in ecosystems and agriculture, the detrimental effects of pesticides, especially neonicotinoids, and the importance of finding alternatives to these harmful chemicals. Dr Rice emphasizes the need for a balanced approach to pest management that harnesses the power of beneficial insects and promotes biodiversity. Our conversation also explored the complexities and historical context of Integrated Pest Management (IPM), including the barriers to its adoption among farmers, the influence of consumer demand for chemical-free food, and the practical steps necessary for implementing effective IPM systems. Highlighted was the role of beneficial insects, plant communication in pest defense, and the importance of farmers having a broad understanding of how ecosystems operate. Correction: At 14:17 there is an error in the dialog saying that 50 seeds per ha was a common planting rate and it should have been 50 000. Additional Information: the APVMA is currently reviewing its registration for use for neonicotinoids in Australia. There will be a period for public consultation once they have released their review. It may be a good opportunity for us all to have a say in the future of these chemicals. For a timeline you can see here https://www.apvma.gov.au/chemicals-and-products/chemical-review/listing/neonicotinoids This podcast forms part of a collaborative project with RegenWA called ‘Make Your Hectares Count'. The project is supported by funding from the Western Australian Government's State NRM Program and you can find out more about it on the RegenWA website at regenwa.com.
*CORRECTION: At 18:59, we start talking about nasal "turbicles". We say this word a lot. We get excited, and even question if "turbicles" is the right word, before agreeing that it's the right word, and carrying on. Future editing Karinda realises we in fact meant to say "nasal turbinates" - not turbicles. Turbicles aren't a thing. You're cordially invited to laugh at our mistake. We go through our personal experiences with mouth taping, different types of tapes, and address common concerns and misconceptions (we get it, it seems odd at first, or scary at most!). My guest today is Chris Fitch, author of the upcoming book Wild Cities: Discovering New Ways of Living in the Modern Urban Jungle. In this episode we discuss case studies of cities around the world that embrace wilder nature. We go beyond the usual case studies like Singapore to explore lesser known examples like:Tallinn, Estonia - the city with pollinator corridors Tokyo, Japan - mini forests in a hyper-dense cityFlagstaff, USA - the Dark Skies cityWellington, New Zealand - a hotspot for native birds+ many othersPre-order the book Wild Cities here - out on 10 April 2025More about Chris Fitch here.*Correction: At 44:10, Chris says that Sydney harbour has more marine species than the British Isles or Mediterranean. Harry Huntley was selected to be the current Annapolis Ward 1 Alderman after Elly Tierney resigned and he has vowed to run in the upcoming election to keep the seat. But before we got into any election coverage, we wanted to know the answer to one question.. "Who the heck is Harry Huntley?" So, we popped into 49 West one morning to chat about his background, how he got here, his thoughts about being the newest Alderman, what the City is doing right (and wrong), and what he sees as the main issues facing the City and Ward 1. Toward the end, Mayor Buckley crashed the conversation, so we had a few words with him as well. Have a listen! CORRECTION: At approximately 29:00 there was a mention of $600K for "brick" sidewalk replacement. Alderman Huntley advised that the $600K was for "all" sidewalk replacement. NOTE: As we get into the 2025 Elections, we will be doing podcasts with all candidates. LINKS: Harry Huntley (Website) Harry Huntley (Newsletter Sign Up)

On deck: (6:45) I have to express my displeasure of the NFL ‘cannibalizing' themselves with the oversaturating of the sport with broadcasts on a million platforms. Games played on multiple days of the week, jamming down these contests down our throats. When is enough, enough? Week 17 is off to a rather brutal start. Other than Beyonce's halftime performance, the NFL games yesterday were unwatchable! There are questions emanating from all four contestants. Who's beating the Chiefs? Are the Steelers shrinking to where they won't be long for the postseason? Is this the Ravens/Lamar Jackson's year? Can you take the Houston Texans seriously? I'll go through the rest of the weeks schedule. I'll make a mention of two big losses in college football regarding personnel who will not play in the Notre Dame-Georgia Sugar Bowl matchup on Wednesday night. Also, former Eagles LB Bill Bergey passed away at the age of 79. CORRECTION: At the 11:00 minute mark, I mentioned Chicago is fighting for a playoff spot. It's Seattle. My apologies as I got carried away with my commentary throughout the podcast. (39:00) The NBA had their banner day on Christmas as Victor Wembanyama impresses, Luka Doncic goes down with a calf injury. Are the Sixers out of their early season malaise? What's going on with the Celtics? The Lakers win a classic as Austin Reaves saves the day with a triple double and game clinching layup. Off the court, Heat guard Jimmy Butler prefers to leave Miami for greener pastures. Where will he possibly end up? And is it possible that Wembanyama could be the face of the NBA down the road? (50:43) On the ice, the NHL has taken a few days off due to the holiday, which the Rangers have seem to be on an extended one, considering how they've played in the last month and change. Is another shakeup in order? The Sabres snap their 13 game losing streak in resounding fashion vs. the Islanders Monday, which segues to a diatribe on my favorite hockey team. Kudos to Sidney Crosby tying Mario Lemieux on the all time assist category in the league's history. (58:31) The MLB Hot Stove may cool off here, unless something sparks up over the last week of 2024. With Corbin Burnes, Pete Alonso, Alex Bregman and the like still available, could a transaction take place? If not now, when? I'll part with thoughts on Walker Buehler signing with the Red Sox and why the Mets did not have any interest? And can they sign lefty reliever Tanner Scott to shore up their bullpen? It's a bittersweet episode as we bid adieu to our often beloved, often confusing Star Wars: Droids: The Adventures of R2D2 and C3PO. At least...until The Great Heap! And we could not have arrived at the end without the help of an incredible guest - writer, photographer, multi-fandom extraordinaire - it's Meigs, creator of Meig's Odyssey and @Meigalorian everywhere online! We talked to Meigs about their journey in the Star Wars fandom and other fandoms in nearby galaxies, and of course, talked about this wild show. ESPECIALLY tiny R2, the absolute best boy. On today's installment of Terminus we get two dramatically different sides of Teutonic black metal, both of unquestionable interest to all burly, woodcutting Terminators. First: the return of Rostorchester, whose brand of heavily emo and punk-infused black metal achieves its full potential- mostly by becoming primarily an emo band!* Next: the debut full length of Ad Mortem, who follow closely in the footsteps of friends Totenwache in refreshing the Sargeist style with a steelier and more stoic German countenance- when they're not partying, of course. 0:00:00 - Intro 0:04:10 - Rostorchester - Der Zinnen Sang vom Niedergang (BergStolz) 0:53:43 - Interlude - A Pregnant Light - “Babychain,” fr. Broken Play (Colloquial Sound Recordings, 2019) 0:59:39 - Ad Mortem - In Honorem Mortis (Purity Through Fire) 1:37:59 - Outro - Mavorim - “Krieger, Voran!,” fr. the Verbrannte Erde split w/ Totenwache (Independent, 2018) *CORRECTION: At the start of the Rostorchester review, we refer to a Youtube comment by Antimessiah. Originally broadcast on March 28, 2024. The original podcast post is here: https://pixelatedgeek.com/2024/03/binary-system-podcast-404-lore-olympus-episode-270-and-271/ The first half of Lore Olympus episode 270 is light on dialog. Baby Dionysus starts the most adorable Hero's Journey ever as he sets off to rescue Hades and Persephone. The cuteness balances out the second half of the episode, with images of Hades dealing with his worst nightmare: being a child at the mercy of his father Kronos. No physical abuse (in this episode anyway), but still, bleak. Episode 271 jumps to Hera and Persephone in Tartarus, preparing to take on Kronos. Hera is obviously ready to sacrifice herself, but there's still some hope; Hera's skills at conversation can make even a titan stop and think for a bit, and Persephone has already demonstrated that she now has the power to make a god bleed. Not much else going on in the nerd world right now, so we talk for a bit about the latest developments with the Royal Family (get well soon), and about the plans for the next Fyre Festival. And by "plans" we mean McFarland is releasing commercials and selling tickets less than a year before a festival that isn't even 1% ready to go. Again. Everybody stock up on popcorn, the "Fyre2" documentary is gonna be wild. This week's outro is a clip from Thumper by Beat Mekanik. Correction: At around minute 9:42 "Zeus" is accidentally referred to as "Hades". And neither of us noticed. Looking for a present for that hard-to-shop-for person? In 1956, Satchel Paige pitched in the biggest game in minor league baseball history. He was fifty years-old, the ageless wonder, making an appearance in Florida near the end of his long, storied and career. And somehow, that wasn't the end. All that, plus Miami baseball, a no-hitter record, and the surprising Cuban baseball rivalry in the 1940s. (CORRECTION: At 23:30, the year 1955 is said. In actuality, the year was 1958, as mentioned in the previous sentence.) Pick up your copy of FLORIDA! right here! Read more about Satchel Paige in Miami right here! An unidentified man's body is found in a ditch on the afternoon of April 24th by a woman walking her dog. When investigators arrive on scene it is clear the man had been moved here and this was not the location where he had died. They noticed what seemed to be residue from duct tape around his wrists and ankles which indicates he had been bound. Aside from abrasions to his right foot and a small cut on his hand, there is no outward injuries to suggest the manner of death. Luckily investigators get the answer they are looking for when an autopsy is performed. * Correction* At the end of this episode I said The Guy From Into The Wild died from a poisonous mushroom but it was believed that it was not a poisonous mushroom that he ate but toxic potato seeds. What does China's rise as a tech power mean for American national security? Jimmy Quinn, a writer for National Review, joins the show to discuss. He and Corbin debate the merits of a TikTok ban, consider the new House Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party, and explore other aspects of the recent uptick in Sino-American competition. For more, follow Jimmy's work at National Review Online. Also, check out Tech Policy Podcast #337: China and Domestic Surveillance. Correction: At 17:30, Corbin refers to “Senator Warren.” For once, he did not, in fact, mean to criticize Senator Elizabeth Warren. His intended target was Senator Mark Warner.

Who even is Lavina Fielding Anderson?! In this classic deep dive we examine the life of Lavina Fielding Anderson and her contributions to the Mormon academic field. Her story serves as a case study of how far individuals can pressure the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from the inside before the institution's immune system responds. She's a powerhouse of a scholar, a pioneer in feminist Mormon studies, and an advocate for those who've survived ecclesiastical abuse. The Mormon Alliance was the organization Lavina formed with Janice Allred to collect and publish survivor's stories and advocate on their behalf. Both suffered gruelling and abusive disciplinary processes for their advocacy attempting to reform Mormon practices and policies. History repeats itself and the timeline of Protect LDS Children and Sam Young was telegraphed by the experiences of Anderson, Allred, and the Mormon Alliance. We finish the episode with a review of Erin Brockovich and a happy environmental news item from Liverpool. Correction: At about an hour and a half in, Shannon referenced Victor Frankl when she meant Elie Wiesel. To celebrate the release of our film "Alchemy Of The Spirit" this week we revisit Mr. Balderson's discussion with Dr. Joseph Suglia, who offers his analysis of the film. Philosopher and Author Dr. Joseph Suglia dissects Steve Balderson's new art film ALCHEMY OF THE SPIRIT which stars Xander Berkeley, Sarah Clarke, and cult icon Mink Stole. The film premiered in Europe at Fantasporto in April, 2022, picking up a nomination for Best International Feature, and went on to screen around the globe to critical acclaim, including the Philadelphia Independent Film Festival (taking home Best Feature Film Science Fiction), the Atlanta Underground Film Festival (taking home Best Director) and the International Sci-Fi & Fantasy Film Festival (dominating the awards with Best in Show, Best Director for Balderson, Best Actor for Berkeley, and Best Actress for Clarke). In the discussion today: the illusion of time, ancient religions, archaic religiosity, life and death, resurrection, the regeneration of time, the birth of the cosmos, the end of the world, Alan Watts, David Lynch, Shakespeare, and consciousness.(Correction: At one point, Dr. Suglia misnames the character Leontes by calling him "Leonatus.")Watch "Alchemy Of The Spirit" on Prime Video:https://www.amazon.com/gp/video/detail/B0B8RLM38MFor more information, visit:https://www.dikenga.com/alchemy-of-the-spirit(repeat episode)

Original broadcast date October 27, 2022. The original podcast post is here: https://pixelatedgeek.com/2022/10/binary-system-podcast-335-lore-olympus-and-random-reviews/ We joke about how Lore Olympus moves at a glacial pace, but we sometimes forget that the story jumped forward TEN ENTIRE YEARS and now the pieces need to be filled in. So, minor spoiler warnings for episodes 215 and 216, because we got a lot of backstory for Kronos and Thanatos, but we still don't know what Apollo's been up to and WE'RE REALLY IMPATIENT TO FIND OUT. After the recap go over a bunch of stuff that's about to be reviewed on the site (the final book of the Scholomance, the latest Magic Order, and Skottie Young's return to I Hate Fairyland), discuss our repeat watchings of Haunting of Hill House, and get into a weird tangent about gas prices because why not? In 1759, Europe is in its fourth year of war. North America is in its sixth. There, a new British commander named Jeffery Amherst partners with Native American allies to take the fight to the French. If successful, Amherst can force the French out of Canada altogether. In Europe, France and Britain fight to a stalemate. But British-allied Prussia is in grave danger as Frederick the Great tries to fight off the combined might of Austria, Russia, France, and Sweden. Will Prussia survive and maintain its position in Central Europe? Or will Austria regain her supremacy in Germany? CORRECTION: At one point, I said that Gen. Wolfe led an attack on Montreal. Eva and Katryn discuss really heavy things (Covid-19! Roe v. Wade!) but, true to form, still manage to make time to discuss frivolous boat-related shows. This week's episode focuses on the issues authors have faced during the pandemic--from long wait times, to supply chain issues, to navigating lockdown with kids and also trying to write. *Content warnings: The Covid-19 pandemic, pregnancy, abortion, the stripping of rights for people with uteruses, graphic discussion of childbirth (For those sensitive to the latter four issues, they are from the 17 to the 22 minute mark). Note from the hosts: The historic event in the U.S. of the overturning of Roe V. Wade took place just before we recorded this episode. We decided to discuss it on the podcast because it affected our mental health deeply. While we mostly spoke to our own experiences and reactions regarding Roe v. Wade as we processed the news in real time, we didn't state enough how much these laws impact the trans community. In this episode I talk about one of my absolute favorite topics, which is FEELINGS. You will learn what feelings are, why we have them and why they play such a huge role in the way we experience life. I will also clean up some misconceptions that most of us have around feelings that play an important role in human suffering. This episode is one of the most important ones, because understanding and being able to be with our feelings are key aspects to living a fulfilling life on this earth as humans. *** Correction: At 8:25 I meant 60-90 seconds of course. ;-) *** Get in touch and let me know what you think, or book a consult with me. When we began this journey in finding the source of the resources Solomon used to build the temple, we had no idea it would lead to so many revelations. It seems that setting the story straight, opens one's eyes in several arenas and the key all along was the Philippines. We have found that when a Filipino says they have been told things by their ancestors, that we should take them seriously, and some really prove it out. In Parts 12A, B, C, and D, we travel through the mapping found in the book of Jubilees which combined with other clues from the bible and some extra-biblical sources, leads to the location of the three holy places of Yahuah God - the Garden of Eden, Mt. Zion, and Mt. Sinai. And, we are not just saying these things, we prove it. See for yourself and always remember to prove all things for yourself. The big news out of the Vatican this week is that Pope Francis has put major restrictions on the celebration of the Tridentine Latin Mass - a form of the Mass cherished by many traditional Catholics. In this episode, I explore this decision and share some thoughts on it. To comment or contact me: jonnycatholic.wordpress.com For some more perspective on Pope Francis' decision: https://wherepeteris.com/traditionis-custodes-the-council-and-the-roman-rite/ Correction: At around 10 minutes in the episode, I give the impression that I know, personally, people who are lovers of the Tridentine Latin Mass and who are also schismatic, hateful of the Pope, or don't think he is the Pope at all. On later reflection, I realized that I don't know a singular person who exemplifies all those characteristics at once. I know many in the Catholic community who do not like Pope Francis. I know some who think he was not the legitimate Pope (their views may have changed since last I talked to them). I know people who are very conservative that love and go to the Latin Mass. But these are all separate sets of people I personally know. It is easy for me to lump those who have these views into one group. And I do believe, among very conservative Catholics and in Latin Mass communities, these sentiments or leanings are floating in the air. But to say that I personally know people who exemplify all three of these sentiments in one person is wrong. And I apologize for saying it on here.

The 1512 Portuguese colonisation of the Spice Islands (Moluccas/Maluku) was part of a much bigger desire to partake in the spice trade. But why were these islands so important? What were spices used for in Europe? For further reading, check out the sources used in this episode at https://hocpodcast.wordpress.com. These are mature topics, but they need to be discussed. Please be mindful of any young folks you listen to this with :) Correction: At the end of this episode, Ryan accidentally says "wait for Episode 3" because he's an idiot and can't math. He meant to say Episode 4. In this special double upload, Audrey and Ryan talk about Post-Roe v. Wade statistics, politics, and the recent nomination of Amy Barrett to the Supreme Court. My special guest and dear friend, Al-Amin Toledo, joins me to discuss how our encounters with “unique” forms of Islam ultimately led us to the door of Temple Theology and the Great High Priest, Jesus Christ. We just started scratching the surface, so stay tuned for part 2! *Correction: At the beginning of the show, I said Al-Amin was my first guest. He's actually the second; my first guest was my wife.*
When Brooke was at the Texas Tribune festival in Austin last week, she moderated two sessions, one with reporters and one with couple of US Representatives from Texas. Democrat Beto O'Rourke of El Paso, and Republican Will Hurd of Helotes. The two - who didn't much know each other a year ago - made headlines in their state when, stranded by a snowstorm, they found themselves sharing a rented Chevy Impala for the sixteen-hundred mile drive from San Antonio to Washington. Brooke asked them roughly the same question she asked the reporters; how do the constant attacks by the President on journalism, on facts, influence how you do your job and how you deal with the press? Does it affect your point of view? **Correction: At one point, Representative Will Hurd refers to a recent missile launch by Iran as an example real news that is worth reporting. In fact, it was the opposite.** On the Media is supported by listeners like you. Support OTM by donating today (https://pledge.wnyc.org/support/otm).
