Author/Audience: 2 Timothy was written by the Apostle Paul to Timothy, a young leader in the early church and co-missionary with Paul. Date: Approximately A.D. 66 or 67, from prison. Paul had one or two years of freedom from house arrest (Acts 28:16, 23, 30) in Rome before he was arrested again and executed under Emperor Nero. These are the last recorded words of this missionary apostle. Key Themes: Boldness; Faithfulness; False Teaching; and Investing in Others 2 Timothy 1:1-2; 3-7; 8-12; 13-18 v. 1. “Apostle”. Paul had authority, but served others, including encouraging Timothy. Christian leadership is characterized by service. The greatest among you shall be your servant. – Mt 23:11 v. 2. “Grace, mercy & peace from God and Christ Jesus” we receive from God and show to others. “My dear son” – Paul genuinely cared about Timothy, calls him, “dear son.” So many in business care only about what they get out of others. Not so for us. Christian leadership is characterized by genuine love. v. 3-4. Paul prays day & night. He remembers Timothy & tears & longs to see him. v. 5. Timothy’s grandmother and mother were women of faith – likely Jewish. Christian leadership is characterized by genuine faith. v. 6. “Fan into flame the gift of God” – probably at an ordination of Timothy where Paul and elders prayed, laid on hands and Timothy received a spiritual gift. Do not neglect the gift you have, which was given you by prophecy when the council of elders laid their hands on you. – 1 Tim 4:14 Christian leadership is characterized by spiritual gifting – received from God and utilized to build up the church. Romans 12:6–8 1 Corinthians 12:8–10 1 Corinthians 12:28 Ephesians 4:11 1 Peter 4:11 1. Prophecy 2. Serving 3. Teaching 4. Exhortation 5. Giving 6. Leadership 7. Mercy 1. Word of wisdom 2. Word of knowledge 3. Faith 4. Gifts of healings 5. Miracles 6. Prophecy 7. Distinguishing between spirits 8. Tongues 9. Interpretation of tongues 1. Apostle 2. Prophet 3. Teacher 4. Miracles 5. Kinds of healings 6. Helps 7. Administration 8. Tongues 1. Apostle 2. Prophet 3. Evangelist 4. Pastor 5. Teacher 1. Whoever speaks 2. Whoever renders service Fan into Flame – Timothy’s gifting was like a flicker. We can only infer what was happening in Timothy’s life that caused timidity. He was probably facing opposition to his teaching. He was young and intimidated by older men. Paul says, “Fan it into flame” – use it, exercise it, work at it. We tend NOT focus on the area of our gifting, but the areas we are weak. We tend to be less disciplined in areas we are gifted and try to improve where we are weak. We need to recognize where God has gifted us and spend time cultivating that gift. Where are you gifted? What have others noticed about you? What if you spent just 15 minutes a day cultivating the area where you’re gifted? Timothy had received spiritual gifting. He needed to be faithful with it, to use it boldly, courageously. v. 7 – not “a spirit timidity, but a spirit of power, love and self-discipline” Paul tells Timothy, your timidity is not consistent with gifting of God in you. We are not ordinary people, we are the blood-bought people of God. We have the Spirit of God at work inside us. God has given us power, love, and self-discipline.
