The third chapter of Ecclesiastes tells us that everything has a season and every activity under heaven has its own time. Yet most of the time, we find ourselves comparing our own season with others; our own tulip with others' roses. In this episode, we reflect on this and share how to embrace both the beauty and mystery of our own seasons; of our own “tulips.”  He will accomplish what He has promised, in His own beautiful time. “When you accept the fact that sometimes seasons are dry and times are hard and that God is in control of both, you will discover a sense of divine refuge, because the hope then is in God and not in yourself.”  -Charles R. Author Audience: Helping You Reach More People With Your Message | Writing | Self-Publishing | Book Marketing | Business Grow

Do you want to harness the power of partner promos by borrowing someone else's audience? If so keep listening as this is one of the fastest ways to grow your audience and sell more books. My name is Shelley Hitz and I'm here with my husband CJ Hitz. We have been coaching authors for over a decade helping you reach more readers with your message by using our social media templates and bridge-building system so you can consistently market your books without feeling pushy or salesy.  In each of our trainings, we promise to share at least one thing that will help you write, self-publish, and market your books so that the message of your books can impact lives. In the next few minutes, we are going to talk about the power of partner promos. When it comes to partner marketing I recommend that you do something to give first. Instead of looking for ways you can benefit, how can you help that person first. "You Can Have Everything in Life You Want if You Will Just Help Enough Other People Get What They Want.” - Zig Ziglar  Three ideas: Show up and like/comment on their posts a couple times a week. You will get noticed if you add valuable comments on a consistent basis. Give them a shoutout on social media and tag them. This could be a book they've written that you love or a concept they teach you recommend or a quote of theirs, etc. Anything that would highlight them in a positive way. If you want to go to the next step, read and review their book on Amazon. Then do a post on social media and tag them in it. Make it more about the book. For example "I loved this book and this is why I recommend it" instead of about them personally. But mention that you gave the book a 5-star review on Amazon and why. This will get any author's attention. Here's a courageous writer's idea. Host them on a live video either on Facebook or Instagram live. This could also work if you have a podcast to interview them. Make it all about them and featuring them and getting to know them.  Once you've built a relationship with them, then invite them to do a promotion with you. A 10-book author giveaway is a great option. You can also do a top 10 favorite podcasts (or books or blogs) in your niche and feature them. You can do this on social media if you don't have a blog yet. Then reach out and ask them to share it. Since they know you they'll be more likely to share it. I gave 11 ideas in last month's podcast. Would you like to get more done without exerting as much energy? That's exactly what having a system will help you do and what we are going to talk about today. My name is Shelley Hitz and I'm here with my husband CJ Hitz. We have been mentoring writers for over a decade helping you self-publish your books in multiple formats using our publishing map and step-by-step system so that you can write words that outlive you and self-publish books that fulfill your calling. In each of our trainings we promise to share at least one thing that will help you write, self-publish, and market your books so that the message of your books can impact lives. Today we're going to talk about how systems can be YOUR secret sauce. What is a system? In the simplest form, it is a checklist you create for a repeatable task. How does having a publishing system help? You save brain power because you don't have to think about what to do next. You simply follow the checklist. What is the best way to start using systems? Start writing down the steps of tasks you do often. Include the websites you need, copy/paste text you can reuse etc. In Christian Book Academy we provide a checklist for you for each stage of the Kingdom Writer's Path. You can then adapt the checklist to the steps you take. Will you start using systems to save time and energy? It takes some upfront effort but is so worth it. I'm often asked how I get so much done and I say that systems are my secret sauce and now they can be yours too. What could happen if you devoted just 15-minutes a day to your writing? Keep listening over the next few minutes to this encouragement that when applied can help you finish writing your book. My name is Shelley Hitz and I'm here with my husband CJ Hitz. We have been mentoring writers for over a decade helping you get your books out of your heads and onto paper with our book writing formulas so that you can write words that outlive you and self-publish books that fulfill your calling. In each of our trainings we promise to share at least one thing that will help you write, self-publish, and market your books so that the message of your books can impact lives. Today we're going to talk about being a 15-minute writer. Anthony Trollope was one of the most successful novelists of the Victorian era. Over the course of 35 years, he wrote 47 novels. He did all of this while working a demanding job as a post office inspector. He committed 15 minutes of every workday hour to writing 250 words. This commitment could produce up to 10 pages of a novel each day. Trollope made the decision to turn off all distractions during those 15-minute segments, only hearing the ticking of his watch. Although this may not be realistic for all of us, this practice shows what can happen during uninterrupted 15-minute intervals. When we become intentional about scheduling these 15-minute writing sessions, it can add up over the course of weeks, months and years. Even if we haven't written 250 words, these segments could allow us to organize our thoughts or ideas. Productivity can be defined in numerous ways. What if you and I committed to writing just 15 minutes a day? Surely this is a realistic goal for each of us. Could you commit to 15 minutes of focused writing each day? Once you get going, you may get into a writing flow that seemingly never ends. Podcast – Beth Jones, International Speaker & Author

Have you ever had a family member or a friend visit and you were so excited that you just wanted to shout? Today is Palm Sunday, the day Christian believers celebrate Jesus' triumphant entry into Jerusalem. I want to encourage you this Easter week to reflect on all that God has done for you and His promises to you of what He's going to do in your life. Jesus came to set you and me free from sin, sickness, poverty, loneliness, marriage difficulties, financial struggles, business and ministry problems, unhappiness, depression, stress, worry, fear, confusion, isolation, and so much more. Have you ever seen a worried, scared, stressed-out, depressed, angry butterfly? No. They are happy and free. This is what God desires for you and me--to soar free. In this episode, I  also share about Shelley Hitz's 7-Day Writing Week challenge which I just joined and which starts March 26 (doors close at midnight March 25). It is absolutely free and God's anointing is on Shelley to lead us writers to write (or finish) our books! You can find out more at writingweek.com.  I also talk about my new non-fiction book in the Metamorphosis series, Transformed From Hate to Love, about my life-long struggle with hate, which will ve available Easter weekend for the Kindle on Amazon. If you live in Canada, consider joining us next month for the Inscribe Christian Writers Conference here: http://inscribe.org/fall-conference/ I will be the keynote speaker and will be leading a couple workshops. And all of you can enjoy this interview I recorded with Inscribe President, Ruth L. Snyder.   Transcript: Ruth: I’m looking forward to having you come to our conference in September. To help our members get to know you, please tell us about your growing up years. Shelley: I’m a person that learned to be adaptable because we moved so many times. I grew up as a PK – a pastor’s kid, going to church, and attending all the events — youth camp, conferences. I was saved and baptized at the age of seven. Typically, we think of salvation as a turning point where everything is going to be great. The Bible says that in this world you will have trouble, but take heart, “I, Jesus, have overcome this world.” The next year my Grandma was murdered. There was a lot of trauma, and yet God is so good. He doesn’t waste anything, and a lot of what I’ve been through is what I share in my books today. Ruth: How does your faith influence what you do? Shelley: It influences everything I do. I practiced as a physiotherapist for twelve years. My husband and I also served in Belize for two years. I worked as a volunteer physiotherapist and my husband worked with youth. When we came back, we knew we wanted to have the freedom to minister again. In 2011 I quit my job and God showed me that author coaching was what He wanted me to do. I thought I would limit my income and influence if I only ministered to Christian authors. However, God convicted me and showed me that’s what He wanted me to do, so I made that change. Now I serve primarily Christian authors. Anyone is welcome, as long as they know I’m going to pray and share Scriptures. God has planted that seed of prayer and encouragement and I integrate it into what I do. I have seen amazing fruit in my writing community. Ruth: When did you first call yourself a writer? Shelley: I never dreamed of writing a book. We moved during my junior year of high school, and my new English teacher gave me a “C”. She taught me how to write and set me up for success. I was a speaker before I became a writer. It wasn’t until 2008 that I published my first book. My husband is a competitive runner. We hang out with people who win world championships. I’m a slow runner. I don’t know if I will ever win an award, but I’m still a runner. God has shown me, “Shelley, you’re a writer!” Ruth: You’ve published over 40 books. How has your writing process changed from your first book to your most recent, Broken Crayons Still Color? Shelley: My first book was a compilation of articles I had already published. Anything you practice improves. I have developed systems, which are basically checklists or certain ways I do things. It makes things run better and faster. I also have a team now. With Broken Crayons Still Color, I wanted it to be my best work. I had a beta group that gave me feedback, along with my professional editor. I also included coloring pages, discussion questions, journaling prompts, videos with fill-in-the-blank viewer’s guides, and a leader’s guide. Ruth: As a writing coach, what do you find writers struggle with the m ost?  Shelley: In the beginning I thought writers just needed the step-by-step. What I found is that so many writers struggle with mindset. If you’re dealing with self-doubt, self-sabotage, fear, shame—some of these biggies—it becomes a big obstacle. I encourage Christian writers to have a prayer team, because Satan is going to want to stop you. It’s also really important to have some kind of writing community to support you. That spiritual battle can be one of the biggest obstacles you face. Ruth: Is there any other advice you would give to a writer j ust starting out?  Shelley: It’s easy to get in a “Do” mode. Focus on creating with God; He has the best ideas. Develop systems that work for you, but also learn from others who have gone before you. Have a notebook where you write down what you’ve done. Use the tools that are available to batch writing blog posts or develop/schedule social media posts. Ruth: That leads us into our VIP Day and conference. Could you give us a taste of what you’ll be sharing? During the VIP Day I will be teaching low cost ways to bring in sales that are automated. I love working smarter, not harder. We are going to create a blue print and go through each step of what it will look like for you, individually. During conference we will be talking about writing in community—the power of having a prayer team, and how having a beta group can really help you in creating a quality book that will reach your audience. We’ll discuss getting book reviews and the mindset you need to work on so that you’re not paralyzed in your writing. Join us here: http://inscribe.org/fall-conference/

She has never had anyone stand beside her and fight for her no matter what the cause. In 2007, Brenda and her 4 adopted children fleed from an abusive husband and father. In 2011, one child was diagnosed with Reactive Attachment Disorder. Again, Brenda found herself all alone during the lowest point of her life. Like most mothers, her focus was not on herself, but rather on her children. All of them. Even the one child that was rejecting his mothers love. A love that he desparately needed but could not accept. It was during this season that Brenda totally had to surrender everything to God in ways, that she had never experienced before. ====== Thank you for listening to the Broken Crayons Still Color podcast. Welcome to Episode 32 of the Heart Lessons Podcast! My special guest today is author coach/writer/speaker Shelley Hitz. Today Shelley shares her story which includes some really painful elements including processing the tragic loss of her grandmother, past sexual abuse, and a pornography addiction that lasted for two years. Although there is great pain in her story, what ultimately shines through is the redemption and restoration that we can find in Christ. Shelley is using her painful past and what she has overcome to encourage others in similar places. I know you will find such hope in Shelley's story. **Just a note that this might not be the most family friendly episode. If my five-year-old was in the car with me I might consider listening at a different time. This episode is so wonderful and definitely worth the listen, but considering some of the words and stories Shelley shares, you might not want little ears to hear.

A Life of Gratitude:  How to Overcome Self-Pity and Negativity Author, Shelley Hitz, says; during a season of transition in my life, I found myself overwhelmed with negative emotions like self-pity and a complaining spirit. It was as if a dark cloud had descended over me. I prayed and asked God for wisdom on how to overcome these negative emotions. As I did, I sensed Him leading me to do a 21 day gratitude challenge. Over the course of the 21 days, God began to change me as I spent intentional time being grateful for all I had been given. I did this through writing in my journal each day and also sending a hand-written thank you note to someone different each day. This also led me to writing out 21 prayers of gratitude and compiling 21 stories of gratitude. I want to share what I learned with you in the pages of this book which includes: 21 Days of Gratitude Challenge 21 Prayers of Gratitude 21 Stories of Gratitude What to Expect On Each Day: Read my personal stories, struggles and reflections. Read one scripture and one quote about gratitude. Apply one personal application step from the challenge.
