October 13, 1960 – With the World Series between the Yankees and Pirates knotted at 3 games apiece, Game 7 at Pittsburgh's cavernous Forbes Field would provide one of the most dramatic home runs in World Series history. In the top of the 9th, with a 9-7 lead the Pirates sent eighteen game winner Bob Friend to the mound but the Yankees would manage to tie things up. The Yankees would send Ralph Terry to the mound in the bottom of the 9th to face Pirate 2nd baseman Bill Mazeroski and with a 1-0 count Mel Allen's call of the game tells the rest: “There's a drive into deep left field, look out now… that ball is going, going gone! And the World Series is over! Mazeroski… hits it over the left field fence, and the Pirates win it 10-9 and win the World Series!”As the Pirates erupted, the Yankees stood across the field in stunned disbelief. The improbable champions were outscored, outhit, and outplayed, but had managed to pull out a victory anyhow. Years later, Mickey Mantle was quoted as saying that losing the 1960 series was the biggest disappointment of his career. The only loss, amateur or professional, he cried actual tears over. For Bill Mazeroski, it was the highlight.Bing Crosby, part owner of the Pirates, was too superstitious to watch the series live. Crosby hired a company to record the game and would only watch it a day later if the Pirates won. His tape of game 7 is the only recording of the 1960 series known to survive as television stations routinely taped over televised sporting events. The tape sat untouched for 49 years when it was found in Crosby's wine cellar in December of 2009. On November 13, 2010, for the 50th anniversary of the series winning home run, a gala emceed by Bob Costas was hosted in downtown Pittsburgh. The MLB Network would air the game and gala on December 15, 2010.

- Harry Wismer- Bob FriendIn this 1958 radio interview, Bob Friend, a key pitcher for the Pittsburgh Pirates, shares his thoughts on the game and his career. By this time, Friend was in the prime of his career, having led the National League in ERA just two years earlier in 1955. Known for his consistency and durability on the mound, Friend was a workhorse for the Pirates, often ranking among the league leaders in innings pitched and strikeouts. This interview comes during a season where Friend would post a solid 22-14 record, further establishing himself as one of the top pitchers in the league. The late 1950s were a transitional period for the Pirates, who were moving from a decade of struggles to becoming a contender in the National League. Friend's role on the team was pivotal, as he provided stability and leadership to a young and developing pitching staff. In this interview, listeners can expect to hear Friend's perspective on the challenges of being a top pitcher during this era, as well as insights into his approach to the game, offering a valuable snapshot of baseball in the late 1950s.#BobFriend #PittsburghPirates #1950sBaseball #RadioInterview #BaseballHistory
Designed with a vision of equity, Ohio's new shared practice model is PACT — Practice in Action Together. PACT has been developed for (and by) public children services agencies: caseworkers, supervisors, and agency leaders working alongside families, former foster youth, academics, and other experts. In this 18th episode of “Let's Have a Conversation,” Bob Friend is joined by Mike, Ashley, and Summer, who speak of the development of the Practice in Action Together (PACT) effort in Ohio. It's a story of healing by a parent and social worker via the Public Children Services Association of Ohio (PCSAO) in which the values and actions of PACT were central and visible within this story. This is a captivating pod and we encourage you to have a good listen! Here is a quick overview of the PACT model: https://www.pcsao.org/programs-events/pact/ Other PCSAO materials: PACT Behavioral Research Brief: https://www.pcsao.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/PACTBehavioralResearchProject.pdf Ohio START website: https://ohiostart.org/ Music by Lesfm from Pixabay
In Part 2 of Episode 34, I'm joined by Bob Friend Jr., the 1984 and 1985 Western Pennsylvania Amateur Champion and 1985 Pennsylvania State Champion, and David Peoples, a two-time winner on the PGA Tour. Bob Friend Jr. is the son of Bob Friend, the Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher who helped them win the 1960 World Series. Known among his former Tour peers as one of the all-time great grinders, Bob Jr. honed his game much like US Open Champion Bryson DeChambeau, spending countless hours on the course and range. He won the 1991 Fort Wayne Open on the Korn Ferry Tour and finished 2nd in the 1998 Canadian Open. In this episode, Bob shares his insights on this year's US Open, Rory McIlroy's putting struggles, Bryson's image transformation, Scottie Scheffler's achievement of becoming the first player since Arnold Palmer in 1962 to have six wins before July 1st, and Paul Skenes' impact on the Pirates. David Peoples, who won twice on the PGA Tour, also joins the discussion. He expresses his surprise when Rory missed those short putts on holes 16 and 18 and shares his thoughts on Rory leaving the course without congratulating Bryson. David also reflects on his experiences playing in the 1993 and 2001 US Opens, explains why Fuzzy Zoeller was his favorite playing partner, reveals why he hates Pebble Beach, and describes what it was like seeing himself on a trading card for the first time.
This week I am joined by 2 legends of the game, John Cook and John Mahaffey, plus one of the great players in Western Pennsylvania history Bob Friend Jr., and Top 100 Instructor and Pittsburgh native Eric Johnson. John Cook and I go back to his epic victory at the 1983 Canadian Open when he defeated Johnny Miller on the 6th playoff hole. We hear how, in his 2nd season on Tour, he held up to the pressure of trying to win arguably the 5th biggest event on Tour at the time, over a legend like Miller. We also get into the great things his father Jim did to advance PGA Tour purses plus John's course design work. John Mahaffey won the 1978 PGA Championship at Oakmont. We go back to that tournament and hear what it was like for him to get that win after having lost 2 previous US Opens. John would double down on that PGA victory by winning the very next week at the American Optical Classic over the only Optometrist on Tour, Dr. Gil Morgan. John also shares his memories of being a part of the victorious 1979 Ryder Cup team and why it's the most scared he's ever been. Bob Friend Jr. was a grinder on Tour for over 20 years. He's also one of the best players in Western Pennsylvania golf history. He won the 1984 & '85 Western Pennsylvania Amateur Championships. He backed that up by winning the '85 Pennsylvania State Amateur Championship. We hear about all 3 of those victories plus insights into some of the other great area courses he enjoys including his own club, Oakmont Country Club. Eric Johnson has been named a Top 100 Instructor for over a decade now. He spent 17 years at Oakmont CC, several of which were as the Director of Instruction. He's now at Yellowstone Golf Club in Big Sky, Montana. We hear about Yellowstone and some other great Montana courses that should be on our list to play. Eric recently took a trip to Southern California where he played Monterey Peninsula CC, Pebble Beach, Cypress Point, and Spanish Bay. If that wasn't great enough, he followed that up with a visit to Pine Valley. We hear about all of that plus we get a tip for how to play better as the temperatures go down and the turf gets harder.

Bob Friend Jr. was one of my very first guests back on Season 1, Episode 3, and has been a wonderful friend ever since. His father pitched in the Major Leagues, mostly in Pittsburgh from 1951 - 1966 and helped the Pirates win the 1960 World Series. We talk about his career including being the winning Pitcher in the 1956 All-Star game. I also get Bob's thoughts on whether there is a path back for Jay Monahan and the renovations currently going on at Oakmont Country Club that will make it play even harder during the 2025 US Open.
A key pitcher for the Pittsburgh Pirates in the late fifties and early sixties, Bob Friend still holds the Pirates' career records for innings pitched (3480), strikeouts (1682), and batters faced (14,644). The four-time All Star played with Pittsburgh for fifteen years, but the last year of his MLB career saw him play in New York… adding delightful footnote. He played the first half of the season with the New York Yankees, and the second half of the season with the New York Mets. Truly a friend of the Big Apple. For today's classic game, the Houston Astros are visiting the Mets at Shea Stadium. Bob Friend is on the mound, and is preparing to throw nine straight innings. We join Mets Radio and the original team of Lindsey Nelson, Bob Murphy, and Ralph Kiner, for the second game in this double header. You can find the boxscore here: https://www.baseball-reference.com/boxes/NYN/NYN196607172.shtml This game was played on July 17th, 1966. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/classicbaseballradio/message

Speaking of hitting pitchers, I discuss the transformation of Smokey Joe Wood from a pitcher to OF, with a special guest appearance from the great Roger Ahl. I then speak with former MLB catcher Chad Moeller about his time with the Diamondbacks and Brewers. Then discuss the amazing similarities between Pedro Guerrero and Kirk Gibson
