Our political thriller series comes to an exciting Election Day conclusion with writer and actor Dan Chamberlain (Have I Got News for You) joining to discuss John Frankenheimer's THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE starring Frank Sinatra, Laurence Harvey, Angela Lansbury and Janet Leigh. Based on Richard Condon's novel, this 1962 classic concerns a Korean War veteran Raymond Shaw (Harvey), who is brainwashed by communists to become an unwilling killer in an international conspiracy. One of the defining films of the Kennedy-era Cold War, THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE has earned a reputation as the quintessential political thriller, but can its dark paranoid fantasy possibly outdo the tension of the current political moment? Find out on a special 2024 Election Day episode of Mama Needs a Movie that also takes diversions into The Ghost Writer, James Carville, libertarianism, Brian Wilson, the Nixon Library, Joycelyn Elders, Parade Magazine, Queer, Conclave, and much, much more! THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE is currently streaming for free on Tubi, PlutoTV, Kanopy, Hoopla, and the Roku Channel.

Mest läsvärda är historikern David Greenbergs välskrivna ”Nixon's shadow” (2003), journalisten Rick Perlsteins monumentala ”Nixonland” (2008), kulturteoretikern Carl Freedmans nätta men högintressanta ”The Age of Nixon” (2012) och författaren John Farrells ”Nixon – The Life” (2017).Vad var det då Nixon gjorde? Men sen kom Nixon. Now in the final stretch of the 1972 campaign, with negotiations to end the war in their grasps, and more news stories bubbling under the surface over Watergate, Richard Nixon marches on with a substantial lead in all the polls. In this episode we listen to the back and forth between the parties in Vietnam, never quite able to get the deal done. News reports about the activities of both campaigns on the trail, with heavy hitting endorsements from actor Charlton Heston and singer James Brown for Richard Nixon and commercials with common folks opposed to the war for Senator George McGovern. In the last half of the show, on election eve, President Nixon pays for a 20 minute address to make one final sales pitch to the nation as to why it is important for him to stay in office for the next four years. Then , 30 years later in an oral history for the Nixon Library, hear George McGovern talk about all the things he had grown to admire about Richard Nixon. and then finally listen in on a phone call as Richard Nixon performs an act of kindness from one candidate to another, three weeks before the November election, and it is an act that should remind all of us, on both sides of the aisle, that in the end, we are all fellow human beings, and fellow Americans first and foremost, no matter how divided we are on political issues big and small. ***** Ranked number 17 as one of the 60 best American History podcasts of 2022 by Feedspot.comhttps://blog.feedspot.com/american_history_podcasts/
SUMMIT IN MOSCOW. On May 22, 1972 Richard Nixon was the first American President to set foot inside the Kremlin as he and Soviet Leader Leonid Brezhnev would hold the first Summit meeting. It would lead to various treaties and the start of a thaw in Cold War relations between the two world Super Powers. It was there in Moscow that the two nations signed the SALT 1 agreement, the Strategic Arms Limitations Treaty. In this show we look back at this momentous moment and here from several of the folks at a conference at the Nixon Library about how the summit came together and how it changed our diplomatic positioning through out the world. We listen in on a documentary about the summit just after it concluded and finally we listen in on something no one in America during the height of the Cold War would ever believed could happen. We listen as President Richard Nixon, one of the most anti-communist leaders in the entire world, addresses the people of the Soviet Union on primetime television.

Hello Studio 360 fans! We're sharing the first episode of a new podcast project, Nixon at War, hosted by Studio 360's Kurt Andersen. Nixon at War is a seven-episode history, a fresh new kind of chronicle about how Richard Nixon turned Vietnam into a war at home… that we're still fighting today. Most accounts of the collapse of Richard Nixon's presidency begin with Watergate - the now iconic tale of a bungled break-in and the misbegotten cover-up that followed. But what led to Watergate? How - and more puzzlingly, why - did one of the shrewdest, most gifted political figures of his time become embroiled in so manifestly lunatic an enterprise in the first place? Intrigued by that question, novelist and historian Kurt Andersen takes a deep dive into the vast archives at the Nixon Library and emerges with an answer he wasn't expecting: While Watergate doubtless accelerated Nixon's spectacular fall, it was the Vietnam War that led inexorably to the break-in, and from there to the sinking of his presidency. At the heart of the series are hundreds of tape recordings from the time. Buried, never before heard, confidential conversations that play like dark drama. To listen to the new series, visit NixonAtWar.org, or search "Nixon at War" wherever you're listening.
Most accounts of the collapse of Richard Nixon's presidency begin with Watergate —- the now iconic tale of a bungled break-in and the misbegotten cover-up that followed. But what led to Watergate? How —- and more puzzlingly, why —- did one of the shrewdest, most gifted political figures of his time become embroiled in so manifestly lunatic an enterprise in the first place? Intrigued by that question, writer/journalist Kurt Andersen takes a deep dive into the vast archives at the Nixon Library and emerges with an answer he wasn't expecting: While Watergate doubtless accelerated Nixon's spectacular fall, it was the Vietnam War that led inexorably to the break-in, and from there to the sinking of his presidency. For Andersen, who came of age in the Vietnam era, that answer in turn begs another, larger question: How did Richard Nixon, with all his foreign policy savvy, allow himself to get trapped in the same quagmire he had watched engulf his predecessor, Lyndon Johnson? These questions are the central concerns of Nixon at War. Over the course of seven episodes, Andersen peels back the onion and emerges with a new and deeper understanding of both the man and the war, and of the complex linkage between them.

On July 22 Secretary of State Mike Pompeo delivered the latest blast of aggressive rhetoric against China in a speech at the Nixon Library in California. Pompeo openly called for regime change in China, saying that “if we don’t change China, China will change us.” In almost hysterical language Pompeo made it clear that the U.S. ruling corporate and political elites are terrified of China’s socialist development and its emergence as an independent country with its own interests and capabilities. Pompeo’s choice of the Nixon Library as the venue for his speech was no accident. In a maneuver to isolate the Soviet Union, former President Richard Nixon pursued a “thaw” in relations with China beginning in the early 1970s that led to the integration of China into the global market. Pompeo cast his speech in historic terms — the Trump administration was reversing the fundamental policy set into motion by Nixon nearly five decades prior and instead turning to unmitigated hostility. “President Nixon once said he feared he had created a Frankenstein by opening the world to the CCP [Chinese Communist Party]. And here we are.” Pompeo said, invoking crude, demonizing imagery. He characterized China as a country of oppression, with no freedom of expression or human rights. In Pompeo’s presentation, it is a place so steeped in the evil domination of the Communist Party that only an American-led campaign to end the current system and bring Western “freedom and democracy” to the country will save the Chinese people from their fate. The Game Before the Money: Oral History of Pro and College Football
President Richard Nixon called to congratulate Washington Redskins head coach George Allen his team defeated the Dallas Cowboys in October of 1972. This episode features the lion's share of their conversation which was about 15 minutes. Football dominates the conversation as the two discuss Washington's come-from-behind victory at home. Nixon displays a solid knowledge of the NFL as he and Allen talk about players from both teams – including Hall of Famers Sonny Jurgensen, Roger Staubach, and Lance Alworth. They go over the next games on both teams' schedules and ponder possible trades Washington could make as the team makes a successful run towards Super Bowl 7. This is a very fun listen for any fan of football and/or politics. President Nixon greatly enjoyed pro and college football as well as his friendship with George Allen. The conversation was recorded as part of the “Nixon Tapes” and is available on the Nixon Library's website. The conversation is Tape 32-007. The Game before the Money Podcast comes out on Tuesdays and is hosted and produced by Jackson Michael, author of The Game before the Money: Voices of the Men Who Built the NFL and writer/director of We Were the Oilers: The Luv Ya Blue Era! In Episode 149 of Hidden Forces, Demetri Kofinas speaks with Orville Schell, Director of the Center on U.S.-China Relations at the Asia Society about the implications of Secretary of State Mike Pompeo's monumental speech at the Nixon Library, the history of engagement with China’s Communist Party, and what a New Cold War with China will mean for the future of peace and security. Dr. Schell’s career as a China scholar spans the entire arch of US-Sino relations since Nixon’s fateful trip to the Middle Kingdom in 1972 and the opening up of China to the world. The same year (1967) that Dr. Schell earned his master's degree in Chinese studies an astounding 70 percent of Americans agreed on one thing: the greatest threat to U.S. security was the People’s Republic of China. After fifty years of engagement where relations between the two nations would improve dramatically, Americans are now back to viewing China as an enemy. A Pew Research Center poll conducted in March 2020 shows that roughly two-thirds of Americans now say they have an unfavorable view of China, the most negative rating for the country since the Center began asking the question in 2005, and up nearly 20 percentage points since the start of the Trump administration. Positive views of China’s leader, President Xi Jinping, are also at historically low levels. In a recent speech delivered at the Nixon Presidential Library, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo declared the failure of 50 years of engagement with China and called for the free world to stand up against this “new tyranny” in what felt very much like the beginning of a new cold war. “It’s true, there are differences,” remarked Pompeo, when contrasting China to the USSR. “Unlike the Soviet Union, China is deeply integrated into the global economy. But Beijing is more dependent on us than we are on them.” “I reject the notion,” he continued, “that we’re living in an age of inevitability, that some trap is pre-ordained, that CCP supremacy is the future. . . . If we bend the knee now, our children’s children may be at the mercy of the Chinese Communist Party, whose actions are the primary challenge today in the free world. General Secretary Xi is not destined to tyrannize inside and outside of China forever unless we allow it.” In their conversation, Orville Schell and Demetri Kofinas discuss the speech, what it means for US-Sino relations, and the implications of disengagement for the US, China, and the world. Political Scientist and presidential expert Lori Cox Han has written an absorbing analysis of the many, many memos that Pat Buchanan wrote while working in Richard Nixon’s White House. Buchanan was in the Nixon White House from the very beginning until the very end, and many of his memos are now available to study at the official Richard M. Nixon Library & Museum in Yorba Linda, California. Cox Han has had an interest in these memos and Buchanan’s particular role in the Nixon White House for quite some time, and this book fits into her long-standing research stream examining presidential administrations, especially their communications structures and strategies. As Cox Han notes, Buchanan had a unique position in the Nixon White House and this also helps to contextualize these many memos and Buchanan’s thinking while working for Nixon. In her analysis of these memos, Cox Han lays out the role that Buchanan played in the Nixon White House as a strategic thinker in terms of the shifting political dimensions, especially in the Republican Party at the time and the growing conservative movement. Advising Nixon: The White House Memos of Patrick J. Buchanan (UP of Kansas, 2019) brings together over a hundred of Buchanan’s memos, either written directly to President Nixon or to other close advisors to the president. These memos, chronologically arranged and annotated by Cox Han, provide readers and scholars with insight into not only the president himself, but the structure and processes of the Nixon Administration, from the campaign trail in 1968 through the last days of his presidency as Richard Nixon resigned amidst the Watergate scandal. After being inaugurated as president of the People’s Republic of China five years ago, no single leader in modern Chinese history since Mao Zedong has assumed more power, or sizably projected his personal influence both domestically and internationally. Calling for a national rejuvenation, Xi has pledged to expand the middle class, and make more reforms for increased foreign investment. In foreign policy, Xi’s China has become more assertive. China has deployed its military overseas for the first time since 1950, and made claims to territory in the East and South China Seas. It’s also committed to billions of dollars in foreign aide for developing nations. In October 2017, the Chinese Communist Party abolished five year term limits, paving the way for Xi to rule beyond 2022. What does his leadership mean for the political and economic future of China, and superpower relations with the United States? Participants: Elizabeth Economy is the C. V. Starr senior fellow and director for Asia studies at the Council on Foreign Relations. She is an acclaimed author and expert on Chinese domestic and foreign policy, writing on topics ranging from China’s environmental challenges to its resource quest. She is the author of “By All Means Necessary: How China’s Resource Quest is Changing the World,” the award wining “The River Runs Black: The Environmental Challenge to China’s Future,” and “The Third Revolution: Xi Jinping and the New Chinese State,” which analyzes the contradictory nature of reform under President Xi Jinping. Mest läsvärda är historikern David Greenbergs välskrivna Nixons shadow (2003), journalisten Rick Perlsteins monumentala Nixonland (2008), kulturteoretikern Carl Freedmans nätta men högintressanta The Age of Nixon (2012) och författaren John Farrells Nixon The Life (2017). Men sen kom Nixon. Allt verkade stå på spel: familjen, sexualiteten, religionen, patriarkatet, moralen you name it.
Fire in the hole! The crew of Wrapped in Podcast: Twin Peaks Season 3 is taking its time to digest and digress in the wake of the two-part finale of “Twin Peaks: The Return”. The podcasters who podcast, then live inside the podcast, cover approximately the first half of Part 17 in Episode 17 Part 1. J.R. Parker makes it clear why his father is the podcast’s most dedicated listener, offers in-depth analysis of Mr. C.’s mullet binder clip, and describes the convergence of the two Coopers in a way that makes it sound suspiciously similar to Ken Walczak’s and my apparent regression to one another’s mean. Jeff Fallis lets everyone know how much he enjoys a good data dump, but he evidently wasn’t told there would be no math, as he runs the numbers on Agent Cooper’s note and solves the vexing riddle of the texted coordinates. For his part, Ken discloses how the show goes full meta, expresses great faith in the ironclad nature of the Showtime nondisclosure agreement executed by the series’ subtitle typists, and is vindicated regarding the amniotic BOB globule. That just leaves me to wonder which one of these is not like the others, bemoan the absence of the Nixon Library from the story’s ultimate resolution, and contend that Part 17 needed more Nadine. We’re definitely going to talk about Judy, as well as theorize about David Lynch characters appearing nude in the wild, White Lodge online dating sites, and the significant women who become important buildings. In addition, our truly Lynchian conversation featuring slow pacing and questionable relevance takes us into such ancillary areas as “Battlestar Galactica”, “Death Note”, Dragon Ball Z, Blake Edwards, Mike Hammer, the Hulk, “La Strada”, Paul McCartney, “The Mod Squad”, the Mystery Mousekatool, Nine Inch Nails, “On the Air”, the Phantom Zone, Sarajevo, Sideshow Bob, and “Time Bandits”. If you’re in the path of Hurricane Irma, batten down the hatches and settle in with a cup of coffee to give Episode 17 Part 1 a listen. The subject of the most recent addition to the Nixon Now podcast is a timely one. Since the fall of Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi in 1979, Iran and the United States have not had diplomatic relations. Despite recent agreements made in the realm of nuclear proliferation, the diplomatic climate between the United States and Iran has remained murky and has only moved slowly in the positive direction of rapprochement. Joining the Nixon Now podcast to discuss the history of the U.S. relationship with Iran is historian and U.S.-Iranian expert Andrew Scott Cooper. Professor Cooper is a contributing columnist to Foreign Policy and the Guardian newspaper’s Tehran Bureau website. He is affiliated with Columbia’s Center for Global Energy Policy and is a member of the UK Energy Institute. He is also the author author of “The Fall of Heaven: The Pahlavis and the Final Days of Imperial Iran.” Cooper spoke at the Nixon Library on September 19, 2016, to share his insight on the final days of one of the world’s most legendary ruling families, the unseating of which helped set the stage for the current state of the Middle East. Interview by Jonathan Movroydis.
