It's Australian Open week, and we're excited...but...we start by chatting about the BMW Australian PGA at Royal Queensland. Fantastic win by David Puig, and an exciting tournament to watch. Mark asks Nick how the LIV / DPWT arrangements work and how Puig will manage his schedule now. Both Nick and Mark raved about how Puig constructed his tournament.Without any notice for Nick to take cover, Mark comments that he loves the commentators, but he has an issue with how the coverage is put together, and he launches in with poor Nick completely unawares.Golf.com have released a new Top 100 list (see it here), and Nick and Mark discuss some of the placings and muse over where Royal Melbourne Composite would rank were it a rankable course. Nick gives Mark payback for his comments on the commentary by making an observation about Kingston Heaths drop on the list, and what the cause might be. Mark ducks for cover.Mark played Royal Adelaide last week and describes it as 'a national treasure', he tells Nick why he loves it so much. Nick is playing the Cathedral Invitational shortly and he has had no time to practise, he is worried.....but at the same time he's excited about the tournament given the course and the calibre of players. Mark says the Cathedral Invitational is good for golf, and a real plus, given the players, the cost, and the proximity the fans get to the players. We pay tribute to Fuzzy Zoeller who passed away last week, and we replay one of his most iconic moments. Then onto the BMW Touch of Class, which has two entrants today !!And then, perhaps in payback for Nicks Kingston Heath comments, Mark has a crack at something else he felt was missing from the TV coverage of the BMW Australian PGA at the weekend. The Top 5 for Betr, inspired by Fuzzy, is the Top 5 most interesting hole in ones. We hear the story of when Mark hit an Ace and thought he'd won a car. Spoiler, he hadn't. The story is an absolute cracker.Lots of feedback today - carts, Minjee, Cam Smith, LIV, The Old Course - and Nick gives his thoughts on why Cam Smith's form has been off.Clearly lots of golf this week to cover off in the PING globals and Nick takes us through it all.And then....for watchMynumbers....Mark gives his masterclass. We need to be honest, Mark thought Nick was doing it, and prepared nothing. And truth be told, the masterclass reflects that lack of preparation. Mark feels it is valid. Nick is unconvinced. Dan is extremely underwhelmed. You be the judge. Feedback welcome. We're live from Titleist and FootJoy HQ thanks to our great partners:BMW, luxury and comfort for the 19th hole;Titleist, the #1 ball in golf;FootJoy, the #1 shoe and glove in golf;PING will help you play your best;Golf Clearance Outlet, they beat everyone's prices;Betr, the fastest and easiest betting app in Australia; And watchMynumbers and Southern Golf Club. (00:00) Golf Distance and Self-Perception This chapter explores the nuances of golf distances and perceptions among golfers of various ages and skill levels. I discuss the average distance a golfer hits a seven iron, noting that it is often cited as 138 yards, but recognizing that this average can be misleading due to the broad range of golfer ages and abilities. Jeff Smith and I share our personal distances, with Jeff hitting his seven iron further than the average due to both his skill level and the elevation where he plays. We also humorously address exaggerated distance claims made by some senior golfers, highlighting how golfers often remember their best shots as their standard. Lastly, I recall attending Fuzzy Zoeller's Wolf Challenge, where I observed a variety of celebrity participants, underscoring the diversity and appeal of golf events. (11:00) Honesty in Golf This chapter touches on the themes of honesty and sportsmanship in golf. We start by addressing the famous movie quotes often misattributed, clarifying that "A man's got to know his limitations" is actually from "Magnum Force," not "Cool Hand Luke," which features "What we have here is a failure to communicate." Shifting to golf, we stress the importance of honesty about one's abilities on the course, emphasizing how inflated claims about driving distance are unimpressive. We share stories of golfing scrambles and the notorious cheating that often occurs, humorously recounting a scramble in Louisville where the police team won with an unbelievable score. We also explore the concept of "sandbagging" in golf—where players misrepresent their abilities, either to gain an advantage or to boost their ego—and question the motivations behind such behavior. (23:28) Golf Handicap Misconceptions This chapter explores the intricacies of the golf handicap system and its purpose as a representation of a golfer's potential. We break down common misconceptions, such as the belief that a handicap is a direct reflection of one's average score, and clarify how it actually accounts for a player's best potential performance. By analyzing a golfer's last 20 scores in relation to course and slope ratings, the system offers a fair way to compete across different levels of difficulty. We discuss how this system allows for fair competition, even against top players like Tiger Woods, by adjusting scores based on the course's challenges. We also touch on the issues of dishonesty in reporting scores and how that affects the perception of one's skill level. Ultimately, we emphasize the system's role in leveling the playing field and fostering fair competition, while acknowledging that not everyone reports their scores truthfully. (34:21) Improving Your Golf Game This chapter transports us to the beautiful mountains of Arizona, where we discuss the striking landscape surrounding the golf course and reminisce about the journey from cornfields to mountain vistas. We reflect on an intriguing story about Reggie Brooks, a former Notre Dame running back who scored a touchdown while unconscious, highlighting the unpredictable nature of sports. Shifting gears, we address the common reluctance among athletes to take golf lessons, despite their lifelong experience with coaching in other sports. We ponder why professional athletes, who understand the value of coaching, often shy away from lessons in golf, and emphasize the importance of seeking guidance to improve one's game. I share my personal experience of mastering the "hinge and thump" technique, illustrating the power of simplifying golf. Finally, we caution against emulating professional golfers without proper practice, stressing the need to approach the game in a way that suits one's own level and abilities.

In this episode, Bob shares his insights on this year's US Open, Rory McIlroy's putting struggles, Bryson's image transformation, Scottie Scheffler's achievement of becoming the first player since Arnold Palmer in 1962 to have six wins before July 1st, and Paul Skenes' impact on the Pirates. David Peoples, who won twice on the PGA Tour, also joins the discussion. David also reflects on his experiences playing in the 1993 and 2001 US Opens, explains why Fuzzy Zoeller was his favorite playing partner, reveals why he hates Pebble Beach, and describes what it was like seeing himself on a trading card for the first time.

All season long, Iowa's Caitlin Clark has been the best player in all of women's basketball. Her play propelled the Hawkeyes into the national championship game and appears to have ruffled the feathers of the college basketball establishment. South Carolina head coach Dawn Staley didn't seem to handle her team's loss to Clark and Iowa very well and responded by playing the race card. “Staley deflected attention away from her coaching errors and Clark's magnificent performance by complaining that unnamed reporters called South Carolina players thugs and monkeys. Staley framed Iowa coach Lisa Bluder's harmless comment about a rebounding 'bar fight' as racist. Staley invented a racial narrative out of thin air. Corporate media sold Staley's lies and gossip.” The controversy didn't stop there. In the final seconds of LSU's victory over Iowa, the Tigers' Angel Reese stalked and taunted Clark. When some labeled Reese's conduct as “classless,” social media quickly responded in typical “what about” fashion. Some compared Reese's actions to the same gesture that Clark had made during a recent game, but Jason argues the two couldn't be any more different. The “Fearless Army" is here to join the discussion. Coach Jason Brown discusses the leadership failure in college athletics. Shemeka Michelle makes her argument that Reese's actions were just part of the game. Steve Kim and Jason expose another terrible take from Shannon Sharpe. T.J. We recorded this episode prior to news of the Players Championship cancellation, so there’s a 7-minute addendum at the front of it talking about the final decision to pull the plug on the remaining three rounds. The rest of it still stands and applies regardless of the Tour reaching that final decision, and the rest of it covers their obstinance all week from refusing to pass on the media tour with markets in freefall to being one of the last sports on the island to cancel events. The decision to have fans on Thursday is also panned in the week of Ponte Vedra feet dragging. There is a certain level of empathy expressed for the truly crap hand they were dealt, but it’s the process of how they played that hand is why the Tour showed some ways in which its come unmoored. A short discussion on the actual golf on Thursday focuses on Hideki’s course record round, how in the world they didn’t get done before darkness, the bunker cam impediment, and how a relatively dry few weeks produced a round rife with mudballs. Flashback Friday hones in on a Players and Sawgrass record that may never be matched as well as some colorful writing about Fuzzy Zoeller.

Holly G and Rich B are in the studio talking all the latest news on Tiger and Sergio, the anchoring ban and the International Network of Golf Spring Conference. While at the ING Conference at Reunion Golf Resort Holly was paired with the rep from Bridgestone golf who fitted her for the first time with the correct ball for her swing speed and smash factor. Holly said not only does your swing speed have a lot to do with the ball you should use, it also has a lot to do with where you hit the ball off the clubface each time. Bob Harig, ESPN.com, calls in to talk to Holly and Rich about the latest news in golf. Holly asks him about Sergio Garcia's press conference at a European Tour event where he offered an apology to Tiger. The backstory is that Tiger Woods and Sergio have been going back and forth after an "incident" at The Players Championship.  With the two paired together and contending for the lead at The Players, Tiger pulled a club from his bag at the same time Sergio was about to hit his shot 50 yards away. Tiger thought Sergio had played his shot already. The selection caused the crowd around him to react and Sergio felt that the noise affected his shot. The two have been exchanging comments in the media ever since.  At a banquet in London, Sergio was jokingly asked about getting together with Tiger. Sergio said, “We will have him round every night. We will serve fried chicken.” The "racist" comment hearkened back to the comment Fuzzy Zoeller made about Woods at the 1997 Masters Tournament which haunts Fuzzy to this day. Sergio apologized at the press conference. Bob mentions that the two have only played 20 times in the past 13 years, which is not very often and does not know where the animosity comes from? There have been a few incidents over the years where Sergio has taken opportunities to poke at Tiger and the same with Tiger and Sergio. Harig also mentions that the other part of the situation is that Sergio has to worry about his sponsors staying with him and the fallout from his comments.  Especially when he is making most of his money off the golf course. Holly talks to Bob about his article on ESPN.com about the USGA's ban on anchoring when putting.  The ban takes affect in 2016. Bob feels that not a lot of players will be affected by the ban. Even the players that have had success with the anchoring of the putter say that it is an advantage, which is not fair to other players. There has been speculation that the Tour may do its own thing, but Bob doesn't feel that will happen. Holly talks to Kevin Baker, Director of Golf and head PGA Professional at Reunion Golf Resort & Spa about everything that Reunion has to offer golfers and their families. Holly was at Reunion for the ING Spring Conference.  Reunion offers 3 different courses, Palmer, Nicklaus and Watson. Each course is different than the other but none is a "signature" course. Reunion is a Stay and Play resort as well as host to 1oo events throughout the year. It is also home of the ANNIKA Academy and Frank Thomas' Putting Pad - a structured way to teach putting and the new home of the North Florida PGA Headquarters. Jeff Shain, PGA Tour.com, calls in to wrap up the hour of intelligent golf talk. Jeff and Holly talk about his latest story about the Web.com Tour. The discussion also covers the HP Byron Nelson Championship and Sang-Moon Bae's win. Also the upcoming Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial. Most of the European players are playing in the BMW PGA Championship in Europe, which is the Euro version of The Players Championship.
