- Earl Gillespie - Blaine WalshThe Milwaukee Braves of the 1950s were one of the National League's most formidable and exciting teams, known for their powerful lineup, dominant pitching, and passionate fan base. After relocating from Boston to Milwaukee in 1953, the franchise quickly became a central force in the leagueThe move sparked a surge in attendance, with fans packing County Stadium and giving the team one of the most loyal followings in baseball at the time. Led by a core of future Hall of Famers—Hank Aaron, Eddie Mathews, and Warren Spahn—the Braves combined offensive firepower with a reliable pitching staff. Aaron and Mathews consistently ranked among the league leaders in home runs and RBIs, while Spahn remained a workhorse on the mound, racking up wins well into his late 30s. The peak of the decade came in 1957, when the Braves won the World Series, defeating the New York Yankees in seven games. They returned to the Fall Classic in 1958 but fell short in a rematch with the Yankees. Throughout the decade, the Braves remained contenders, often finishing near the top of the standings and challenging the National League's elite. By the end of the 1950s, the team was still strong but beginning to show signs of transition. While the stars remained productive, questions about long-term depth and rising competition foreshadowed the shifts that would define the 1960s. Still, the 1950s Braves left an enduring mark as one of the decade's most respected and balanced clubs.

When he posed for his 1959 Topps baseball card, Lew Burdette grabbed teammate Warren Spahn's glove and pretended to be a lefty. Topps missed the joke and printed the card with the error.Burdette would sign his name “Lewis” on his contracts, and would alternate between “Lou” and “Lew” for autograph-seekers. He said he really didn't care how his first name (which was actually his middle name) was spelled.Years before Mark Fidrych became famous for talking to the baseball, Lew Burdette used the same antics to psych himself up on the mound. Often accused of throwing a spitball, Burdette never bothered to refute that charge, and used the paranoia to his advantage. In the 1957 World Series, he shut out the New York Yankees twice in four days to give the Milwaukee Braves their only World Championship.Lew BurdetteOn October 10, 1957, Burdette shut out the Yankees for the second time in four days. He was the first pitcher in 37 years to win three complete games in a single WS and the first since Christy Mathewson (1905) to throw two shutouts in a single Series. The win gave Milwaukee the world championship and earned Burdette Series MVP honors.Hall of Fame lefty Warren Spahn and righthander Burdette gave the Braves a formidable one-two punch, with 443 victories between them in 13 seasons. A slider and sinkerball pitcher, Burdette was widely accused of throwing a spitball as well. His constant fidgeting on the mound fed that suspicion; it didn't indicate nervousness. Teammate Gene Conley said, “Lew had ice water in his veins. Nothing bothered him, on or off the mound. He was a chatterbox out there … He would talk to himself, to the batter, the umpire, and sometimes even to the ball.”Besides winning 20 games in 1958 and 21 in '59, Burdette won 19 twice and 18 once. His 2.70 ERA topped the NL in 1956. In two All-Star Games, he allowed only one run in seven innings. He no-hit the Phillies on August 18, 1960.On May 26, 1959, he was the winning pitcher when Pittsburgh's Harvey Haddix hurled 12 perfect innings against the Braves, only to lose in the 13th. That winter, the puckish Burdette asked for a $10,000 raise, explaining: “I'm the greatest pitcher that ever lived. The greatest game that was ever pitched in baseball wasn't good enough to beat me, so I've got to be the greatest!”“My best pitches were a sinker and slider,” Burdette said. “I'd move the ball in and out. I always tried to keep it down. I was always being accused of throwing at the hitters. Early Wynn always said that he was the meanest pitcher in the American League, and I was the meanest in the National League.” — Sports Collectors Digest, September 4, 1998"I'm the greatest pitcher that ever lived. Happy anniversary to Tommy Pham, who eight years ago went deep for the first time as a major leaguer, a two-run shot at Busch Stadium that gave the Cardinals the lead after a Matt Kemp RBI single for the Padres in the top of the third inning. Scoring ahead of Pham on that first homer was an appreciative Lance Lynn, who'd given up the run to San Diego in the top of the frame, and led off the bottom with a single. Two innings later, Lynn and Pham hit back-to-back doubles, and the Cardinals went on to a 3-1 victory — Lynn the winner, he and the just called up Pham (he was in his third game that season after a cup of coffee the previous September) responsible for all the runs.* Tommy Pham hit his first home run off Ian Kennedy, 7/5/15* Ian Kennedy gave up his first home run to B.J. Two Historic Hitting Streaks, Ty Cobb, extends his streak to 40 straight games, as he collects three hits and three runs in the Detroit 14-6 win over Cleveland. On a sweltering day in front of 52,832 fans at Yankee Stadium, Joe DiMaggio breaks Wee Willie Keeler's 1897 major league record hitting streak of 45 with a three-run homer off Red Sox hurler Dick Newsome. Cobb's streak ended the next day, but Joltin Joe went on to hit in 56 straight games a record that stands to this day. Extra Inning shutouts also ruled this day as future Hall of Famer's Carl Hubbel and Juan Marichal pitch historic games. Marichal out duels Warren Spahn 1-0 in a thrilling 16 inning game as Willie Mays provides the games only run with a homerun. Hubbel beats the St. Louis Cardinals 1-0 in a 18 inning thriller. Hughie Critz drove in the Giants only run in the bottom of 18th. This was the first game of a double header. He will eventually record 363 wins in his career. It should come as no surprise that the best left-handed pitcher each year wins The Warren Spahn Award. His 22 wins in the 1958 season have brought the Milwaukee Braves to the World Series. Facing the New York Yankees, both teams have a 92-62 record from the season. On this date in 1965, the Mets opened their fourth season with an 8-1 loss to the Dodgers at Shea Stadium. The 112-loss season didn't even have a moment to gather oxygen before Maury Wills led off with a single, stole second, moved to third on a passed ball by Chris Cannizzaro, and scored on a Willie Davis double. Later that inning, being the 1965 Mets, it became 2-0 Dodgers when Davis scored on a foul pop to Cannizzaro. How the heck did that happen? Did any of our subscribers see the Mets' 1965 opener? If you did see that game, you might also remember that it became 5-0 in the fourth inning when Don Drysdale hit a two-run homer off Al Jackson. That was one of four homers that Drysdale hit in his career against the Mets, tied with Bob Gibson for the all-time lead among pitchers. The Mets have given up 95 homers all-time to pitchers, a number that figures to stay in double digits for many years to come, barring a wave of Shohei Ohtani copycats in the majors.Drysdale hit a solo shot off Tracy Stallard in 1964 at Shea, the two-run dinger off Jackson in the 1965 opener, a tiebreaking solo blast off Warren Spahn in the eighth inning on June 11, 1965, and then one more on July 24, 1966, at Dodger Satdium, off Jack Fisher.Stallard also gave up homers during his Mets tenure to Juan Marichal (1963) and Wade Blasingame (1964), which ties him with Ron Darling, Jacob deGrom, and Dillon Gee among Mets pitchers for giving up dingers to their opposite number. The king of this dubious category? Not surprisingly, it's Tom Seaver, given the amount of opportunities he had.Seaver gave up homers in 1969 to Dan McGinn and Fergie Jenkins (two of six homers that pitchers hit against the Mets that year (tied with 1962 and 2006 — Dontrelle Willis took Jose Lima, Oliver Pérez, and Roberto Hernandez deep that year — for the team record), Juan Pizarro in 1971, Burt Hooton (a grand slam) in 1972, and Larry Christenson in 1976. Tom Terrific got one of those dingers back in 1979, when he took Craig Swan out of the park in Cincinnati. As a Met, Seaver hit six home runs, a team record since broken by Dwight Gooden, who tallied seven. Noah Syndergaard also hit six taters with the Mets. What none of those guys did is hit a grand slam, something no Mets pitcher has done since Jack Hamilton on May 20, 1967… off Al Jackson. Hamilton gave back all four runs within two innings, left the game tied at 4-4, and watched the Mets build back up to a 9-4 lead before losing to the Cardinals, 11-9.Mets pitchers have hit two grand slams, ever, with the other one hit in 1963 by Carl Willey at the Polo Grounds against the Houston Colt .45s. That total of two is equaled by the number of grand slams that the Mets allowed to pitchers in the final season at Shea Stadium: Félix Hernández (off Johan Santana) and Jason Marquis (off Jon Niese) both did it.The Mets are 0-7 all-time when allowing a grand slam to an opposing pitcher. No team has given up more of them since 1962. This is a public episode. If you'd like to discuss this with other subscribers or get access to bonus episodes, visit willetspen.substack.com/subscribe

December 22nd Show Notes Born on December 22, 1862 in East Brookfield, MA, Player, manager, scout, general manager, owner — Cornelius MacGillicuddy (Connie Mack) — did it all. For more than half a century, he owned and managed the Philadelphia A's — nearly their entire existence. He built two dynasties that won a total of five World Series titles. Mack was often described as the “grand old gentleman of the game,” but he wasn't above stretching the rules to gain a competitive advantage. He was rumored to have kept frozen baseballs handy to insert into the game when his pitchers were on the mound. He also employed a special coach who stationed himself in center field at Shibe Park to steal signs from opposing teams. Connie Mack pieced together a tremendous baseball team in the first decade of the 20th century, built in large part, around his famous “$100,000 Infield.” At the time, Mack claimed that even that lofty dollar-amount would not pry the four star players away from him. In 1911, John “Stuffy” McInnis was switched to first base to replace the aging Harry Davis, a fine player. McInnis, who earned his nickname because he had the “right stuff” as a young ballplayer in Boston, joined Eddie Collins, Jack Barry, and Frank Baker to form the greatest infield of the era. His A's from 1929-1931, had a team second to none, which featured Jimmie Foxx, Mickey Cochrane, Al Simmons, Lefty Grove, George Earnshaw, Rube Walberg, and Jack Quinn. Mack holds the all-time record for most games managed (7,755), most games won (3,731), and most games lost (3,814). His record of 50 years managing one team, and 53 years overall will most likely never be broken. Tom December 22, 1944 – Future Hall of Famer Steve Carlton is born in Miami, Florida. Rivaling Tom Seaver as the finest pitcher of the 1970s, Steve Carlton won the National League Cy Young Award in 1972 and 1977 before capturing another two trophies during the early portion of the ensuing decade. One of the greatest left-handed hurlers in the history of the game, Carlton trails only Warren Spahn in victories for a southpaw, with 329.   He also ranks fourth on the all-time strikeout list with a total of 4,136. The first pitcher to win four Cy Young Awards, Lefty, as he came to be known, surpassed 20 victories on six separate occasions, winning at least 16 games another four times. Over an 18-year stretch beginning in 1967, he failed to post at least 13 victories just once. During that same period, he also finished with an earned run average under 3.00 eight times, struck out more than 200 batters eight times, and threw at least 250 innings 13 times. Carlton remains the last National League pitcher to compile as many as 25 victories in a season, as well as the last pitcher from any team to throw more than 300 innings in a season.   December 22, 1980 — The Boston Red Sox mail Fred Lynn and Carlton Fisk their new contracts two days after the Basic Agreement's December 20 deadline. Boston's blunder makes their All-Stars eligible for free agency. Fisk will land in Chicago after a legal battle and complete a Hall of Fame career over the next decade plus. Lynn will end up traded to California with Rick Burleson, and play 11 more seasons. However, he will never have the impact he did in Boston.   This was a dark era in Boston, similar to recent times as they let a Hall of Fame player slip away, as well as trading away the soul of the team. It took several years for them to become competitive again, when Roger Clemens would arrive in the summer of 1984.     December 22, 1999 — In an interview in Sports Illustrated magazine, Atlanta Braves P John Rocker offends virtually every race and ethnic group in a hateful outburst. Community leaders, media, management, coaches, and teammates alike call for action to be taken against the lefthander, who had 38 saves for Atlanta this past season.   In a story published in the December 27, 1999 issue of Sports Illustrated, Rocker made a number of allegations stemming from his experiences in New York City and answered a question about whether he would ever play for the New York Yankees or the New York Mets.   I'd retire first. It's the most hectic, nerve-wracking city. Imagine having to take the 7 Train to the ballpark looking like you're riding through Beirut-next to some kid with purple hair, next to some queer with AIDS, right next to some dude who just got out of jail for the fourth time, right next to some 20-year-old mom with four kids. It's depressing… The biggest thing I don't like about New York are the foreigners. You can walk an entire block in Times Square and not hear anybody speaking English. Asians and Koreans and Vietnamese and Indians and Russians and Spanish people and everything up there. How the hell did they get in this country?   During the interview, he also spoke of his opinion of the New York Mets and their fans:   Nowhere else in the country do people spit at you, throw bottles at you, throw quarters at you, throw batteries at you and say, “Hey, I did your mother last night—she's a whore.” I talked about what degenerates they were and they proved me right.   The interview was conducted while driving to a speaking engagement in Atlanta. The reporter, Jeff Pearlman, wrote that during the interview session, Rocker spat on a Georgia State Route 400 toll machine and mocked Asian women. Also, Rocker referred to Curaçaoan teammate Randall Simon as a “fat monkey”.   Although Rocker later apologized after speaking with Braves legend and Hall of Famer Hank Aaron and former Atlanta mayor and congressman Andrew Young, he continued to make controversial remarks. For his comments, Commissioner Bud Selig suspended Rocker without pay for the remainder of spring training and the first 28 games of the 2000 season, which on appeal was reduced to 14 games (without a spring-training suspension).   December 22, 1953 –Jack Dunn III officially turns over the name “Orioles” to the St. Louis Browns, who recently were acquired in November 1953 by a syndicate of Baltimore business and civic interests led by attorney and civic activist Clarence Miles and Mayor Thomas D'Alesandro Jr.   His family had successfully operated the International League Orioles franchise for years in Baltimore, Maryland. The original Orioles, an AL charter member franchise eventually moved to New York in 1903 to eventually become the Highlanders, and then the Yankees.    The move to Baltimore was ushered in with the arrival of Brooks Robinson in 1955. They experienced their greatest success from 1966 to 1983, when they made six World Series appearances, winning three of them (1966, 1970, 1983). This era of the club featured many future Hall of Famers who would later be inducted representing the Orioles, such as third baseman Brooks Robinson, outfielder Frank Robinson, starting pitcher Jim Palmer, first baseman Eddie Murray, shortstop Cal Ripken Jr., and manager Earl Weaver.

Posthumous memorials at Channel 6 and from Grant's wife Céline Gounder are each things to read while holding the sadness, while happier memories can be found in Spencer Hall's 2011 boat outing with Leach, and Wahl's introduction of an Ohio teenager named LeBron James to the world. This isn't a read, but an interesting and deep explanation of the impact of Leach's Air Raid offense.I always get a kick out of being reminded that the English soccer club Derby County used to play at The Baseball Ground. As Twitter continues to burn down and the CEO dances about with open cans of gasoline, all are welcome on our Discord.Free buses for NYC? At my day job, we're deep into redesigning the bus network already. Go for it.And back here in Queens, I have been to the Boca Juniors restaurant and I'm glad it survived the past two years and now gets to be the center of Argentina fandom in the city. And glad that they got the shine here from Hell Gate. The Mets signed former Brewers catcher and 2021 All-Star Omar Narváez, which means that someone is leaving because that's too many catchers. In his major league debut, back in 2016, one of the White Sox pitchers Narváez caught was Tommy Kahnle, who's just returned to the Yankees. Kahnle appeared again in Narváez's next game, and then his third game was a Carlos Rodón start… and now Rodón is coming to the Yankees, too. Game number four for Narváez? He caught new Mets starter José Quintana. And then it continues. David Robertson, who made his major league debut at Shea Stadium… …got the save in Narváez's fifth career game, a Rodón start. It took nearly a month, until his eighth game, for Narváez to not catch someone who will be with a New York team next year, unless Chris Sale or Jacob Turner somehow winds up here.As Narváez and all those pitchers get ready to come to (or return to) the Big Apple, old friend Noah Syndergaard returned to Los Angeles, where he's set to become the fifth player in history to appear for the Mets, Angels, Phillies, and Dodgers. He'll join Dick Stuart, Dennis Cook, Dennis Springer, and Bobby Abreu in that oddball club, and be the first to take the New York-Anaheim-Philly-LA path to it.I hadn't realized that Stuart, the man best known for his awesome nickname, Dr. Strangeglove, even played for the Mets, let alone the Angels, Phillies, and Dodgers. I knew him as a Pirates slugger, part of the 1960 World Series team… and I may have known but forgotten that his best season was with the 1963 Red Sox, when he led the American League in total bases and runs batted in.After a less impressive, but still really good (.811 OPS, 33 homers) season in 1964, the Red Sox traded Stuart to the Phillies for Dennis Bennett, himself a future Met in 1967 when the Sox sent him here for Al Yates. And that's when Stuart began the Syndergaard speedrun, playing a replacement-level season with the 1965 Phillies. They traded him to the Mets in February of 1966 for Wayne Graham, Bobby Klaus, and Jimmie Schaffer.Stuart played 31 games as a Met, with one of his four homers coming off 1969 Met Don Cardwell… as well as one off his former Phillies teammate Chris Short. After the Mets released Stuart, he caught on with the Dodgers… and hit his first homer in L.A. off the very same Chris Short.Short was a really good pitcher, but not at the level of the last guy that Stuart tagged for a dinger with the Dodgers, Steve Carlton. After two years with the Taiyo Whales in Japan, where he hit a combined 49 homers, Stuart came back to the States and hit one last tater for the Angels, off Tommy John.In Stuart's rookie season, 1958, he homered off Don Drysdale, Warren Spahn, and Robin Roberts. He took Sandy Koufax deep five times, tied with Cardwell, Johnny Podres, and Stan Williams for his most against any pitcher.Taiyo Whales is a new team name for me… they're now the Yokohama DeNA BayStars, having moved from Kawasaki to Yokohama in 1978 and briefly being the Yokohama Taiyo Whales before doing a Tennessee Oilers kind of thing. They had a pretty cool song, if not Beatles level. (Hope you're enjoying We Can Pod It Out!)The Tennssee Oilers… also had a song. That one isn't just not Beatles level, it's not Shitty Beatles level. This one wasn’t exactly pristine, but the White Sox will take the lopsided win. Jiménez singled and scored in a three-run first inning and smacked a two-run double in the fourth to bump Chicago’s lead to 5-2. He added a long sacrifice fly in the sixth before Abreu chased Royals starter Brad Keller with a two-run homer making it 8-2. Bob Barry's Unearthed Interviews

Baseball Hall of Fame left-handed pitcher Warren Spahn had an incredible career. He won more games than any other lefthander, 363. He compiled 20-victory seasons 13 times, and 23 victories when he was 42 years old. Spahn hurled at least 245 innings and clubbed at least one home run for 17 consecutive seasons. He was nicknamed Hook due to the shape of his nose, after being hit in the face by a thrown ball. Yogi Berra said of Spahn and himself, “I don't think we're the oldest battery, but we're certainly the ugliest.”

Meet Tom Tom Andrews operates Andrews Media Ventures an independent PR communications consultancy based in Hartford, Wisconsin. Tom's background includes 35 years of major market broadcast news and public relations experience. Tom and his team have aligned professionals to help corporate and nonprofit clients raise their business and organizational profiles through services such as creative writing, PR console, media relations, spokesperson training, video production, voice talent, and special events support.  Besides using conventional online, print, broadcast, advertising, what other ways might a business or nonprofit organization consider to help raise public awareness about their products or services? Well, I'm not at all saying that conventional advertising and such are bad avenues to take. But in conjunction with that, I encourage my clients to think about earned media, grassroots type of methods of getting your message out. Earned media means coming up with angles that your company has that could be potentially newsworthy, and then pitching those to television, radio, print, whatever. Also, the advent of the digital world has given us social media. So there are opportunities now, as you never had before Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, all these different methods that people have to get their word out. Another thing that I encourage them to do is to consider what I call side door advertising. You have an opportunity to be a part of community events, sponsorships, opportunities to get where you're not necessarily the focus, but by the side door, people have to know who you are, they have to be ident you have to be identified. Same thing if your company is featured in a news story of some sort. Maybe the story is not how great Keystone click is, but maybe the story involves Keystone click and they tell people who you are. So there's a variety of different ways to get your message out. All in addition to if you have an advertising budget, all the better. But sometimes I've worked with companies and entities that really didn't have much of a budget to do that. Particularly nonprofits maybe don't have the money to do that. So I look for other avenues to get the word out, get creative. As someone who came from the news business, how important is the use of video in telling my company story and doesn't have the impact it once did in the b2b world as well as reaching the general public? I spent quite a bit of time with video, and I still do I still am involved in video production. So I'm getting my biases out there for you right away. I still think that video when it's done well, has a tremendous impact as much today if not more than ever, because companies used to produce a video, and it has basically one use, they produce it, it'd be a DVD, they'd get it out, send it to their prospective clients or people that they wanted to work with and that was the end of it. Well today, when we shoot videos, we shoot them for repurposing, we shoot them so you can take some sound clips, video clips, and you can put them on Twitter, you can put them on Facebook. So you've got golden opportunities to reuse, if you will, the same material and augmented and refresh it all the time. I think video has a tremendous impact because I think it's the best mode of conveying human emotions. We talk about doing things in person, or the big thing is why is it so effective? Because you get to see the facial expressions of the person you're speaking with. There are silent little signals that don't come over in an email, they don't come over in a post on Facebook, or some social media, but you sit down with somebody and you get to know them, and you get to understand where they're coming from and I think that's a very effective way to get your messages across. When telling a company's or organization's story, can you address the importance of the people aspect in storytelling?  That's the in-person thing I've just mentioned. When you're storytelling, for example, I'll pick on the news business for a moment, okay? The stories that I always found got the best response and the longest shelf life, I still hear about them. I've been on television for many, many years, but people remember the people whose lives were affected, or changed for the better, or impacted by whatever the story happened to be. So we build our stories, you build stories around people because that's the factor that everybody that either tugs at the heartstrings, or it or you find yourself saying, "I had that happened to me, I understand what he or she is feeling." Can you share with our listeners your most successful or favorite networking experience that you've had? I will say right up front that I'm a very lucky person because of the career I had before thrust me into all kinds of situations where I had to meet new people. I had to learn about their business, I had to learn something about their family or something like that. What are you doing in networking? You're introducing yourself, you're trying to find out about somebody else's business, you're trying to figure out if you can interface with this person? So when I started out I was on the radio, I covered the Bucks, the Brewers, Marquette Warriors, the Green Bay Packers, the Wisconsin Badgers, all those things. And I was networking, all the while gathering my contacts, but the best location was always the press box because I got to reunite. To this day, I still do some scattered features for the brewery for game day magazine and I get to go and reconnect with people that I used to work with or who were coming into the business. But the thing about it is that kind of an atmosphere has given me all kinds of opportunities. For instance, from doing things with the Green Bay Packers I got to edit rather and do some writing and do the marketing for the first biography ever done on Curly Lambeau. It was called Lambeau, The Man Behind The Mystique. Later on, I was approached because of my junky hood from going back to baseball cards when I was five years old, and getting introduced to the Milwaukee Braves. Today I'm also one of the directors of the Milwaukee Braves Historical Association and because of that, I got sought out by a guy who has written a chain of sportsbooks. The book was for Milwaukee Braves fans only and because of that, I had to split it up in terms of writing. We had contacts with people who are still Milwaukee Braves fans today, catch up with them, and get them to tell us their stories. Their personal stories of I remember the first time I met Warren Spahn, or I got picked up by Warren Spahn when I was hitchhiking, or I remember bugging players in the parking lot outside county stadium. Those are just precious memories. So I got to kind of relive my childhood with that.  How do you best stay in from of and nurture your network? Well, I've always considered my network like a garden, if you will. You are planting constantly you're planting and hoping that they're going to bear fruit. But what do you got to do? When you start planting things, do you just wait? No! You have to water it, you have to weed it, you got to do all these things. Also, here's a key one. Keeping in contact with people not only when you're trying to figure out if you can do something together, but it's also learning about your contacts, learning about their family. Mark that stuff down and the old days, we have what was called a Rolodex. You would write down this on this rotating little miniature file system that you kept at your desk. Nowadays its this is called, your database so you have update and nourish your database every chance you get. If you read about something where maybe somebody even if you're not working with them anymore, but you knew them before, and they just did something of significance, call them up, congratulate them, or send them an email. You would be amazed at the number of things that come swimming back to you in a very positive light. If you stand at the edge of the garden with your arms crossed and waiting, it does not happen. You have to push it. Let's go back to your 20-year-old self. What would you tell yourself to do more or less of or differently with regards to your professional career? Wow, that is a loaded question because hindsight is always 20-20, and boy, if I knew then what I knew now, I'm certain that my attitudes on all the number of things would be completely different than they were. I never considered myself to be a know it all, but I would always listen to myself when I was certain that I was correct. I always dug my heels in and that was not very flexible on certain things. Looking back I would be more flexible, I would be more open to seeing other ways of doing things even if I was certain. Listen, I've done this before, I'm lock stock and barrel certain that this is going to work. I've done it before, but maybe not as well as the idea that somebody else just came up here. So I think that's probably what I would tell myself, be a little bit more open, be more flexible, and always be a better listener. Do you have any final words of advice to offer our listeners with regards to growing and supporting your network? Always be thinking about growing and supporting your network. Don't be afraid to reach out and tell your story to others and also be encouraging to get other people to tell you their story. What's the story about them as much as they want to share about them personally, or about their company, or how they got to where they are. People like to share that kind of information, but many times they're not drawn out? to do it. So I would encourage you to do that. Take notes, mental notes, and when you get back to your car, write them down, write something down, make up a little review. If somebody really interested you write down as much as you can remember right there when it's fresh. Builds your network, grow your garden!   Connect with Tom   Email: andrewst53@gmail.com  Phone: 414-732-7371  LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/tomandrews53/

In 1950, the residents of Milwaukee, Wisconsin were given hope. Hope that with the building of a new stadium, professional sports would follow. Well, it didn't happen right away, but it didn't take too long before Lou Perini moved his Boston Braves of the National League to Milwaukee. On, April 6, 1953, the Milwaukee Braves took the field for the first time in County Stadium and a love affair between a city and its team was born. In fact, even today, there are those who can't get over the fact that the Braves packed up after the 1965 season and left for Atlanta. Even with the Seattle Pilots moving to Milwaukee in 1970, there are those who felt so betrayed, they have watched baseball since. They enjoyed the experience of going to County Stadium and watching their beloved team featuring the likes of Hank Aaron, Warren Spahn, Eddie Mathews and so many others win the World Series in 1957. They came out in record-breaking numbers … over two-million packed the Stadium in 1954, 1955, 1956 and 1957 – they were the first team to cross that threshold. The Brewers moved into the old ballpark in 1970 and stayed through the 2000 season; and the Green Bay Packers played anywhere from two to four games there every year between 1953 and 1994. Even the Chicago White Sox played a few “home” games there during the 1968 and 1969 seasons. Was the stadium a palace? Nope. Did it have phenomenal, ultra-modern features? Nope. It was just a structure. A building where people could go to watch the favorite baseball players, their favorite football players, grab a hot dog and a drink, sit back and take it all in. In his new book, “On Story Parkway,” author Jim Cryns recalls the events that led up to the building of the stadium, the determination of Bud Selig to get another baseball franchise in Milwaukee after the Braves left and the great memories and stories so many had in relation to the stadium on this episode of Sports' Forgotten Heroes. Join me and Jim as we talk about the history of Milwaukee County Stadium, some of the great events that happened there, its birth and its final stand. When the Ojai's 2,300 public school students were sent home last March, we had no idea how long until those students would be back in their classrooms. Turned out it would take more than a year before the schools could safely reopen. One of our earliest guests on the Ojai: Talk of the Town podcast was Tiffany Morse, superintendent of the Ojai Unified School District, to talk about the extraordinary measures the district was taking to make sure that the students (and parents) could meet the terrific challenge of remote learning. Not to mention the hundreds of meals each day being served by the district as many families struggled to get enough to eat. We talked about the entire cohort of student athletes, dramatists and musicians who lost these important rituals of passage, including their graduation ceremonies. This time, the news was a little better. The schools reopened, with safety measures including outdoor classrooms, earlier this month. Among the good news was that Dr. Morse had been recently selected as the Superintendent of the Year for the tri-county region, in large part because of public-private initiatives during the pandemic, as seen in the overwhelming support for a $45 million bond measure, which is already being put to use building public spaces like a community pool and a massive solar project. Morse talked about the measured responses to the tremendous pressures exerted on one side by parents who worried about how far their kids would get behind in their education, and teachers, who worried about losing their lives. It has been a time of great challenge and uncertainty, and now it's time for reflection and taking what lessons we can from this lost year. This deep and wide conversation explores the role of teachers, students and key insights into what makes a community work. We did not talk about taimen fishing on the headwaters of the Amur River, the 16-inning pitching duel in 1963 between Warren Spahn and Juan Marichal, or the novels of Sybille Bedford.

It’s been nearly two years since our first look at baseball’s still-revered Milwaukee Braves, and this week – courtesy of author/historian Patrick Steele (Home of the Braves: The Battle for Baseball in Milwaukee) – we finally get the chance to go deeper into the team that, in its brief 13-season run: never posted a losing season, won two National League pennants, and, in 1957, brought “Cream City” its first and only World Series championship.  Featuring a stellar lineup of mostly Braves farm club-developed players (including eventual Hall of Famers Henry [Hank] Aaron, Warren Spahn, Eddie Matthews, Red Schoendienst, and Phil Niekro) the team immediately won the hearts of Wisconsin sports fans upon its hasty arrival from Boston in the midst of the 1953 pre-season – shattering then-modern-day attendance records, and ushering the city of Milwaukee into the world of America’s proverbial “big leagues.” The Braves' surprising success in Milwaukee during the mid-1950’s prompted Major League Baseball to redefine itself as a big business, clearing the path for: franchises to relocate beyond the sport’s Northeast and Midwest strongholds; its two leagues to expand; and teams to leverage cities in high-stakes battles for local government-subsidized facilities.   All of which, ironically, helped sowed the seeds for the club’s eventual relocation to Atlanta in 1966 – an acrimonious departure that generations of Milwaukee baseball fans still haven’t forgotten.   PLUS: “There’s No Joy Left” – polka music king Frankie Yankovic’s song of “good riddance”! The lineage behind what is today’s Atlanta Braves is one of the longest, deepest and most uniquely enduring in all of professional baseball.  With early roots dating back to the launch of 1871’s National Association (when they were based in Boston, and known simply as the “Red Stockings”), the later-renamed Braves franchise boldly moved to the greener pastures of Milwaukee in 1953 – where for 13 years, the team never endured a losing season, won two National League pennants, and, in 1957, brought the city its first and only World Series championship.  With a talented lineup featuring future Hall of Famers Henry Aaron, Warren Spahn, Eddie Matthews, Red Schoendienst, and Phil Niekro, the team immediately won the hearts of fans, shattered modern-day attendance records, and ushered the city of Milwaukee into the world of the “big leagues.”  In the process, the Milwaukee Braves' success prompted Major League Baseball to redefine itself as a big business—clearing the path for franchises to  relocate west, its two leagues to expand, and teams to leverage cities in high-stakes battles for civically funded facilities.  But the Braves' instant success made their rapid fall from grace in the early 1960s all the more stunning, as declining attendance and local political greed led the team to Atlanta in one of the ugliest divorces between a city and baseball franchise in sports history.     In this supremely revelatory conversation, TV documentary director/producer and author (and Wisconsin native) Bill Povletich (Milwaukee Braves: Heroes and Heartbreak; A Braves New World) joins Tim Hanlon to discuss the historical importance of the Braves’ time in Milwaukee, and some of the specific events and personalities that shaped it. It would have been enough just to see them pitch. Taking the mound at San Francisco's Candlestick Park that summer night in 1963 were 42-year-old Warren Spahn and 25-year-old Juan Marichal -- the embodiment of an ageless wonder headed for the Hall of Fame and a whirling wunderkind making his own case for immortality. But as one scoreless inning followed another en route to a 16th-inning climax, the 15,921 fans in attendance began to sense that they were watching a pitching duel for the ages. They remained, shivering and thrilled, to see it end after midnight. The sui generis event surpassed the world of statistics and entered into the realm of magic. Author Jim Kaplan, who covered baseball for Sports Illustrated in the 1970's and 1980's, initially planned to expand a magazine story he'd written about the game into book form. The more he researched the principals in his travels from San Francisco to South Buffalo to Santo Domingo, however, the more fascinated he became with their biographies. Spahn was one of the most decorated ballplayers to fight in World War II. Marichal narrowly escaped death three times. Despite their obvious differences -- Spahn was white, American, and left-handed, Marichal is bronzed, Dominican, and right-handed -- Kaplan found extraordinary similarities between the friendly rivals. Listen in as Jim Kaplan takes us back, 50 years ago, to The Greatest Game Ever Pitched...
