Nick O'Hern and Mark Allen have worn FootJoy their entire career, and given we do the pod from FootJoy and Titleist HQ we thought we'd grab the FootJoy Product Manager for Australia & New Zealand, Chris Patterson, to have a chinwag about golf shoes generally, trends, and some of what they've got coming. We discussed exactly what Chris does at FootJoy, and what he looks for when decided what to range for these markets. Chris talks about current trends in golf shoes, both for 'normal' golfers and Tour Pros. He runs us through some of the current range, and gives a sneak peak at a shoe coming out later in 2025....Nick and Mark are VERY excited for it.Mark asks what the key differences are between a normal shoe and a golf shoe, and why it is important. Nick asks how golf shoes have changed over the years. Is a shoe fitting beneficial? Clearly for tour pros it makes sense, but what about us normies? Chris talks to that.Mark is curious as to whether ball speed can be influenced by your golf shows, and Chris tells us about Justin Thomas and Cam Young and what has happened to their ball speed since changing shoes. Extraordinary.Nick and Mark both love the MyJoy concept and Nick asks what are some of the craziest things Chris has seen?A fascinating chat with Chris, the FootJoy Product Manager, and a great reminder of why FootJoy are the number one shoe (and glove) in golf.We do the show from Titleist and FootJoy HQ, thanks to our great partners:Titleist, the #1 ball in golf;FootJoy, the #1 shoe and glove in golf;PING will help you play your best. It's Masters Week — and while we're all watching Augusta's magic unfold, we're also witnessing some of the best examples of what it truly means to Own Your SSWING.This week on Pivot The Path, Scott dives into how the game's greatest players show us the power of focus, routine, and presence — not just at Augusta, but across every level of elite golf. From Brian Harman's gritty win at the Valero, to Marc Leishman's steady hand at LIV, to Jeremy Gandon rising on the Korn Ferry Tour — one thing is clear: the Own Your SSWING mindset is alive and thriving.Scott breaks down how tour pros use their pre-shot routine to block out pressure, trust their movement, and stay locked in — and how you can bring those same tools into your own game, no matter your handicap.Follow our Social Media for all the best moments from the show:Pivot The Path Instagram - click here!SSWING YouTube - click here!SSWING Website - click here! Fantastic win from Warrnambool's favourite son Marc Leishman in Florida at the weekend, and we begin today's show chatting about the win....Marc becomes the third Aussie to win a tournament in the last couple of weeks, following Min Woo and Steve Allen. Mark loves the 'drive, chip, and putt' competition and thinks there should be more of them prior to tournaments. We discuss the elephant in the room, will we get the world feed for The Masters. Neither Nick or Mark has been able to get clarity. They're hopeful that we get Jim Nance and the traditional team. We discuss how wonderful Jim Nance is, and how long he has left commentating. Mark raises the LIV commentators. Nick and Mark feel that the LIV commentators get too excited too early in the tournaments.Nick says the Fedex Cup should be Matchplay, Mark says the 'handicap system reeks of someone who does not understand golf', and wants more matchplay in golf. We've had our Masters preview pod, but we can't help but talk about Augusta again. Mark asks Nick about the creek on 13, Nick explains how he approached it and why, plus which holes suit lefties and which suit righties. In a prelude to Nicks Top 5 'unwatchable golfers', despite his winning form, Nick and Mark comment that Brian Harman or, as we prefer to call him, Ricky, is a great putter with great power, but an 'unwatchable golfer'.Following some anonymous feedback to Mark, we discuss the prices clubs charge at members courses, specifically guest fees. What is causing it, is it too much? Mark would you like you to send in what your clubs member/guest fee structure is. Whilst we're talking complaints. Mark reckons Nick and Third Man have been taking advantage of his generosity, and he has a crack at both of them on the pod. Harsh.Plenty of feedback, lots on the aim point comments from last week, including a couple of whacks - and one wolfpacker calls Nick and Mark 'a couple of old grandpas'. Clearly they're wrong, neither have grandchildren. And wolfpacker Tom from California has sent in his swing for Nick and Mark to review.PING global. Big news. After last weeks excellent trumpet playing by Anthony from Woodlands, our lawyer Denis Denutto has reviewed the legalities around Timmy Trumpet. We may end up in court. So Nick has found a new, legal PING global results intro which he plays. Oh, and gives heaps of results. No masterclass this week, but thanks to Frank and the team at watchMynumbers it returns next week.We do the show from Titleist and FootJoy HQ, thanks to our great partners:Titleist, the #1 ball in golf;FootJoy, the #1 shoe and glove in golf;PING will help you play your best. Joe's got something he wants to get off his chest this week. He thinks the new PXG Wildcat driver has been criminally under-spoken about and wants to give what he thinks is an emerging new driver sub-category the time of day. How can this shortened, lighter, loftier 460cc head driver benefit slower swing speed golfers? The explainer this week focuses on whether the shafts we can also use the shafts Tour pros use. Of course, you can, in theory, but the real question is, should you? Ask The Pod wants to know about Joe's wildest 3D printing dreams (strap in for that segment), while the WITB this week looks at Aaron Rai. The Englishman has been steadily making his way up the world golf rankings and is known for a handful of equipment quirks. We check out his old TaylorMade driver, orange castle tees, double winter gloves and much more. Welcome to the "Saturday Morning Golf Stat" from the Hack it Out Golf Podcast. Today's episode: how far away is 3.19 strokes? Take a Tour Pro and a 15-index and drop them both in the fairway at the point that they will, on average, take 3.19 more strokes to get in the hole. What distances are they at? Lou puts this question to Mark and Greg, they guess, and much astonishment follows. Turns out: Tour Pros are really, really good—and most of us have a lot of room to get better, and would be helped with a more realistic assessment of our abilities. Each of these will be a mini-episode (10-15 minutes long) about an interesting golf stat. We will discuss what you can learn, and most importantly, how you can apply this on the golf course to lower your scores and lower your handicap. Listen on your drive to the golf course or over your Saturday morning coffee! Data is sourced from Arccos Golf. They have over 1 BILLION shots in their database. This week Mark tries to, after 5-finger discounting a pair of FootJoys a couple of weeks ago, to do the same with a Titleist putter that he has found. In fairness it is quite stunning. Then his eyes turn to a new pair of FootJoys. As Al Czervik said, the mans a menace. We discuss Pebble Beach. Mark loved the drone shots, and Nick is a fan of the drone shot tracer. The weather was a bit mixed, leads to a chat as to why some golfers play well in the rain and others don't. Nick has a theory which he talks through. Mark tells a story about playing in driving rain in Scotland.Nick decides to have one final crack at a replacement for Wolfpack. He's had another dinner party with the Mount Lawley Toffee Nose Crowd *. Does he succeed? Spoiler alert, no.Minjee Lee is using a long putter, Nick and Mark discuss and talk about whether you can go back and forth.Mark has been looking at the TGL ratings and talks to them, and about Tiger being pinged by the shot clock. There was a suggestion on Twitter from a Wolfpacker about a shot clock idea which Mark and Nick discuss.Rumours get louder on the Australian Open...we chat about them. And then a voicemail comes in from Pete with a comment/question on slow play. Nick has another idea to solve slow play....could be a bit evil but it could work. And Mark has some audio of the loudest noise ever on a golf course, we play it.After the Turn, Marks Top 5 is on the most amazing up and downs he has seen. We get to PING Global results and we have a structural issue....we have no intro. Nick didn't like the AI one Mark created, and we haven't come up with any other option, so we are in a hole. Unprofessional.Lots of feedback, including a 59 for Mark to rate - dangerous after incurring the wrath of David Micheluzzi a couple of weeks agoAnd Nick's masterclass is simple but powerful. Oh and why does Mark call Mike Cocking from OCM an arsehole ? Awkward. As usual, unfortunately, Mark wants to finish the show with an AI song created on the spot. Does it go well? Does it crash and burn? We're coming from Titleist and Footjoy HQ, and we're here thanks to our great partners:The watchMynumbers app, play smarter and use your data. Welcome to the "Saturday Morning Golf Stat" from the Hack it Out Golf Podcast. As always, the best Saturday Stats the ones when Mark and Greg's guesses are furthest from the number. Today, Lou's topic are the green-light shots: a wedge from the fairway for Tour pros. How often are they hitting the green, what's their average proximity, and what's the scoring average? Once again, this is a masterclass in expectations management! Each of these will be a mini-episode (10-15 minutes long) about an interesting golf stat. We will discuss what you can learn, and most importantly, how you can apply this on the golf course to lower your scores and lower your handicap. Welcome to the "Saturday Morning Golf Stat" from the Hack it Out Golf Podcast. From 30' away, even a Tour pro rarely expects to make his putt. But how often is he leaving it more than 5' from the hole? How often will his putt come up short of the hole? These are the questions Lou brings to today's episode. Mark and Greg give their answers, but more importantly, they are shocked by the 5' answer—and they offer some great advice, not only for putting, but for your expectations on the greens. Each of these will be a mini-episode (10-15 minutes long) about an interesting golf stat. It's a Friday episode about nothing as Andy and Brendan provide some Friday whimsy before heading into the weekend. To start things off, there's some postseason baseball cleanup as Producer PJ returns after missing Wednesday's recording to see the Mets. Brendan laments that the Guardians are facing elimination against a team that they repeatedly beat in the regular season and calls for the MLB playoffs to have a staggered start like the Tour Championship. Andy reveals that PJ skipped the Mets' clincher to produce a Fried Egg Pod, but will be rewarded with a potential trip to Phoenix for the Charles Schwab Cup Championship. This serves as a transition into golf talk, as there's plenty of Jay Don Blake cleanup from Wednesday's episode. Jay Don has been prominently featured across the PGA Tour's social media this week and the excitement for his Thursday round is palpable. Jay Don's nephew took to the SGS YouTube comments to defend his uncle, not realizing that Andy and Brendan pop nearly all sponsor exemptions or older players playing in PGA Tour events. After hearing some murmurs through the grapevine, Tosti's caddie from the Sanderson writes in to share the tale of his weekend on the bag. Brendan then breaks out a 1999 PGA Tour media guide to read about Jay Don and this leads into a rabbit hole of obscure 1990s Tour pros. Andy lands on the Wikipedia page of J.L. Lewis, reading it almost in its entirety. To wrap things up, Andy and Brendan read some Golf Advice emails, discussing podcasts to sleep, a Scotland golf trip, and a Jack Nicklaus letter about some poorly-placed trees.
In this week's episode, Scott and Sean tackle a crucial aspect of the game: the reality of golf performance. Statistically, it's nearly impossible to hit great shots consistently throughout an entire round. They delve into the importance of setting realistic expectations, discussing how this mindset can transform your golfing experience and help you embrace the inevitable ups and downs of the game.Tune in for practical tips and insights that can transform your approach and elevate your performance on the course! In Part 1 of this week's show, I'm joined by PGA Tour Legends David Peoples and Tom Purtzer. David had a fantastic Amateur career which included winning the 1979 Florida State Amateur Championship before he joined the PGA Tour. He went on to win twice on Tour, at the 1991 Southern Open and the 1992 Anheuser-Busch Classic. He also won the 1990 Kapalua International. David was so much fun when he joined me in December that I couldn't wait to have him back on the show. He and I talk about how he came from 2 strokes back to win that '79 Florida State Amateur defeating then 44-year-old and multi-time champion Jack Vegte and future Tour Pro Jay Schrader. He also shares memories of finishing runner-up at Q-School in 1982 when it was played at TPC Sawgrass, his appearances in the 1992 and '93 Masters, and why he decided not to play in The Open Championship until playing in the Senior Open Championship when he was on the Champions Tour. Tom Purtzer is one of my all-time favorites. In his 7th visit to the show, he shares his insights on this year's Players Championship plus his experiences playing in the tournament from the late 70s through the early 90s. He talks about the challenge of figuring out the winds swirling around the 17th green, similar to the ones around the 12th green at Augusta National. We also talk about the incredible putt he made from the back lip of the bunker on the 13th hole on his way to victory at the 1991 Colonial Invitational and why he never mentioned that putt to tournament host Ben Hogan. We round out Part 1 of this week's show by talking about the fracture in the Pro game and if we would be here if Deane Beman was still Commissioner.
Hatgate. The Talk Birdie To Me WhatsApp group has been going crazy this week. Mark is grumpy about the lack of a Tara Iti hat, Nick is unapologetic that he should not be regarded as a hat courier for people. How does it all end? We find out on the pod. The elephant, or hat, in the room needs to be discussed before we get to any golf chat. After that convo, we get to the golf. Mark has had a sneak peak at the new Commonwealth course, we've put some pics on socials, he loves it and can't wait to play it. Nick suggests we do a pod from Commonwealth, so we're on. Mark discusses how he loves the way that Tom Doak designs golf courses. Nick is a massive fan of the history at golf clubs, of the history lesson when you walk through the clubhouses - the names, the pictures. There was the big meeting in the Bahamas last week with all the big wigs from the PIF and the PGA. Mark has some inside info from his US source on how the meeting went, what was discussed, the vibe in the room. And Nick and Mark discuss what it could mean and how things may end up.Nick has finally caught up on the new series of Full Swing, and we discuss some of the stories. Both Nick and Mark have some thoughts on Keegan Bradley after watching the series.A fun Top 5 today, Nick counts down his Top 5 weirdest hats on Tour Pros over the years. A bit of controversy with one left out that Mark felt should be in the list. Pod listener Steve calls in from the beautiful Rich Rivers Golf Club with a story about watching the great Peter Lonard playing there recently. Which takes us to feedback, lots of it, including a ripping caddy question which we'll follow up next week - and we run through your votes and comments on the GOAT, and put Nick and Mark on the spot to name their GOAT. Interestingly, they each name a different player.Lots of fantastic performances over the last week, and Nick runs through them all in the PING global results, and we wrap the show with a masterclass from Mark Allen inspired by Pro Keith Mitchell on the importance of holding your head still, or close to, right into your follow-through.And this Thursday we'll have a bonus pod with the legendary Peter Chooky Fowler where we'll pick his brains on his short game. Can't wait! We're here each week with the great support of PING, see your local golf shop or professional for a PING club fitting. Just like they have with Nick O'Hern, PING will help you play your best. And the Golf Clearance Outlet, great prices on the best gear. See them instore in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane or Perth, or online here.Talk Birdie To Me. New episodes weekly wherever you get your podcasts. Subscribe and you'll never miss one! Former PGA Tour Pros Bill Mallon and Scott Gump joined me in Part 2 of last week's show. Bill Mallon played Tour in the mid to late 1970s during the Golden Age of the PGA Tour. After winning 43 amateur titles he earned his way through Q-School in 1975. He finished 6th at the 1976 Western Open, 3 strokes back of Al Geiberger. He played in the 1977 US Open at Southern Hills. The heat that week was brutal but Bill talks about how he thrives in conditions like that even though he's from New England. We talked about the death threats that eventual winner Hubert Green dealt with that week. Bill decided to walk away from the Tour after the 1979 season and go back to college to get his medical degree. He became a leading Orthopaedic Surgeon and medical advisor to Golf Digest. I got his thoughts on what Tiger Woods is now trying to play through following his surgeries to fuse a joint in his foot and vertebrae in his back. Scott Gump was a tremendous Amateur player as well. He was the medalist during the stroke play portion of the 1987 US Amateur. He earned his way on Tour by finishing 3rd at Q-School in 1990 and then winning on the Space Coast and Korn Ferry Tours. You'll hear his stories about that US Amateur and the grueling 6 rounds of Q-School. His good play at the '87 US Amateur earned him a trip to the 1988 Masters. Scott recalls his stay in the Crows Nest for the week, the legendary inexpensive meals, playing a practice round with Gary Player, and playing in the Par 3 Tournament. We then hear about his hot play late in the 1991 season at The International Tournament and the Walt Disney World Classic.
Andy and Brendan record this from an airport lounge phone booth before they depart for Northern Ireland, so it is somewhat “muted” compared to the normal SGS. But there is still plenty to laugh and holler about, starting with an amusing tidbit on the the Monday pro-am participants at Bay Hill getting non-participating minor leaguers despite ponying up a nice five-figure sum. Then they get to the news that LIV is withdrawing its OWGR application, and what that says about the league and the rankings. Are they illegitimate? Is everyone being a bad steward of the game right now? They also discuss Mike Weir's comments that LIV players will not be on the International team for the Presidents Cup, a statement made on March 5th that feels like self-sabotage against the larger product. The schedule for the week hits on Bay Hill and the usual amusements at that annual stop, like par-3s of the same distance and screened-in porches. They close with a rousing game of In-Out-Alternate? for the opposite field event in Puerto Rico.

Lot of fun this week on Talk Birdie To Me, and if you can, we'd love you to subscribe, rate and review the pod wherever you listen. It really helps with the algorithms of the pod platforms to share us more widely. We start this week with some of the fantastic French commentary of Matthieu Pavon's win at Torrey Pines last weekend. Fantastic! Nick and Mark both watched a bit of it and discuss the tournament and Pavon's win. Mark was pleased with how well the internationals were doing. However, both are not fans of the Torrey Pines course, saying it's just a bad course - Mark describes it as a joke of a course. As expected, Nick Dunlap turned pro last week, Mark feels that Nick not playing Torrey Pines was a smart move as he could have cost himself a lot of cash if he'd missed the cut.Nick and Mark discuss the club head speed drills that they are seeing more of.Whilst Mark has failed miserably with his homework on guests coming on the pod, Nick has arranged for Gary Lisbon to have a chat with us about his new book, we'll chat with Gaz over the next week or two. We then have a chat about what golf books Nick and Mark would recommend you read.LIV seems to be a bit late on confirmation of the teams, particularly as it starts this coming friday. Nick and Mark discuss, and Pete from Brisbane calls in with a rumour he's heard about the name of the new Jon Rahm team. Maybe Pete is our new 'breaking news' reporter?** update: since the pod was recorded, this rumour has been confirmed by LIV **Mark has an idea about a grand slam of hole in ones that he runs by Nick.A ripping Top 5 this week, Mark counts down the Top 5 dodgiest things in golf that he's seen. Very funny. One particular golfer gets lined up big time.Voicemail today from Fehan with some LIV questions and comments.A big week of PING global results with PING players killing it all over the world, as you'd expect given they're using the incredible gear from PING.Lots of feedback to run through, which we love - lots of feedback on the Huntingdale development by OCM, plus a challenge for Nick O'Who from Darren....one which Nick reckons he would fail at the moment. And a great question from Ben about the Grand Prix of Golf concept, which the boys discuss - Mark has some info direct from Scottie Scheffler's brother in law, from Scottie.Great masterclass is on uphill lies inspired by a few poor shots in the Torrey Pines and Rosebud tournaments at the weekend.Talk Birdie To Me, new episodes weekly wherever you get your podcasts. Subscribe and you'll never miss one! And we'd love you to share the podcast, and if you can rate and review us that would be great.Follow us on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and TikTok, or send a voicemail to us here. Welcome to the "Saturday Morning Golf Stat" from the Hack it Out Golf Podcast. We've all heard it before: "never up, never in." But is that what we see on the PGA Tour? And if not, why might it be a good thing for some of your putts to come up short? And is there a distance from the hole where you would want to see half of your putts coming up short? Each of these will be a mini-episode (10-15 minutes long) about an interesting golf stat. We will discuss what you can learn, and most importantly, how you can apply this on the golf course to lower your scores and lower your handicap. Listen on your drive to the golf course or over your Saturday morning coffee! Data is sourced from Arccos Golf. They have over 750 MILLION shots in their database. Tony Ruggiero is a Golf Digest Top 50 Instructor and Host of the Tour Coach Podcast. He and I have a lot of synergies with show partners and mutual guests. In this episode, I'm joined by 2 of the Top Instructors in the game, Tom Patri and Tony Ruggiero plus former Tour Pro Mark Lye, and 20-year Army Combat Veteran now a 40-year-old member of the Stephen F. Austin men's golf team Jonathan Shuskey. TP shares his thoughts on the Presidents Cup, the great week that Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas, and Max Homa had, and the forgettable one that Scottie Scheffler and Sam Burns did. I also get his thoughts on the rise of Tom Kim, and a playing lesson for how to dial in our wedges from 100 yards in. Mark Lye was an All-American in college at San Jose State and played on Tour from 1977 to 1994. During his high school days, he never lost a match yet colleges thought he was too small and his game was too erratic to recruit him. The only one who came knocking was San Jose State. He made the others school regret their decision. Mark won the 1976 Australian Order of Merit and the 1983 Bank of Boston Classic. Hear those stories and more in his segment. Jonathan Shuskey was a 20-year Army Combat Veteran who saw 5 tours of duty in the Middle East. We hear about his play on the All-Army golf team, winning the Fort Benning Club Championship 3 times, and what it's like being a 40-year-old Sophomore playing on the Stephen F. Austin men's golf team. Tony Ruggiero is a Golf Digest Top 50 Instructor and Host of the Tour Coach Podcast. He and I have a lot of synergies with show partners and mutual guests.
