In this sixth installment of our eight-part conversation with World Golf Hall of Fame member Hale Irwin, we dive deep into the heart of major championship golf and reflect on the enduring lessons of a remarkable career. Hale, always thoughtful and candid, revisits his storied experiences at Augusta National, sharing his personal connection to the Masters and what it meant to walk its hallowed grounds—both as a competitor and a steward of the game's history. With insight only a three-time U.S. Open champion can provide, Hale opens up about how his game fit—or didn't fit—the iconic venues of each major. He offers a behind-the-scenes look at the mental and physical toll of playing The Open Championship, revealing why family time, the grind of travel, and those rainy days with fogged-up glasses sometimes outweighed teeing it up across the pond. From the roars of Augusta to the winds of Royal Lytham & St. Annes, Hale reflects on the challenges, triumphs, and close calls—like his proud 64 at the Masters and duels with legends like Seve Ballesteros and Tom Watson. We also touch on the PGA Championship, and Hale's personal choices around scheduling, family priorities, and staying true to his own rhythm, even in the face of major championship expectations. With humor, humility, and unmatched perspective, Hale Irwin shares stories that remind us that greatness isn't only measured in trophies, but also in the values that guide a life in golf. Join us for another timeless chapter in the life and legacy of one of the game's true champions.Subscribe and follow FORE the Good of the Game for the next two episodes as we continue the journey with Hale Irwin.Give Bruce & Mike some feedback via Text.Support the showFollow our show and/or leave a review/rating on: Our Website https://www.forethegoodofthegame.com/reviews/new/ Apple Podcasts https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/fore-the-good-of-the-game/id1562581853 Spotify Podcasts https://open.spotify.com/show/0XSuVGjwQg6bm78COkIhZO?si=b4c9d47ea8b24b2d About "FORE the Good of the Game” is a golf podcast featuring interviews with World Golf Hall of Fame members, winners of major championships and other people of influence in and around the game of golf. He shares compelling stories of strategy, mental resilience, and even golfing with Sean Connery in celebrity events. In the powerful conclusion to our eight-part conversation with World Golf Hall of Fame member Hale Irwin, we journey with one of golf's greatest competitors as he reflects on the final chapter of his playing career and the enduring legacy he leaves behind.Irwin shares memories of his seventh and final senior major victory at Valhalla, a week marked by rain delays, back pain, and a quiet moment of clarity found in the solitude of his car with a book in hand. He speaks candidly about rival and friend Jay Haas, the grace of Payne Stewart, and the brilliance—yet unfulfilled potential—of Tom Weiskopf. With honesty and humility, Hale opens up about what it truly means to win, to persevere, and to walk away on your own terms. We also explore Irwin's deep commitment to philanthropy, including the creation of the Hale Irwin wing at St. Louis Children's Hospital and his recent honor as the 2025 U.S. Senior Open Honorary Chair at The Broadmoor. Hale discusses his second career in golf course design and the joy of building courses that bring people back for another round. In our final three questions, Hale reveals the one “Mulligan” he might take—not on the course, but in life—and how he hopes to be remembered: not just as a champion golfer, but as a friend, a mentor, and a man who always tried to do what was right. This final episode is a heartfelt and fitting end to an extraordinary life story, told in the voice of a man who lived it with integrity, grace, and grit. Hale Irwin's reflections remind us that in golf—as in life—it's the relationships, not the trophies, that matter most.Give Bruce & Mike some feedback via Text.Support the showFollow our show and/or leave a review/rating on: Our Website https://www.forethegoodofthegame.com/reviews/new/ Apple Podcasts https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/fore-the-good-of-the-game/id1562581853 Spotify Podcasts https://open.spotify.com/show/0XSuVGjwQg6bm78COkIhZO?si=b4c9d47ea8b24b2d About "FORE the Good of the Game” is a golf podcast featuring interviews with World Golf Hall of Fame members, winners of major championships and other people of influence in and around the game of golf. 20-time winner on the PGA Tour, Hale Irwin takes us back to his early days on Tour and shares the lessons he learned from mentors like Bruce Devlin and Dale Douglas. Surviving the pressures of being a "Monday qualifier", Hale finally closed the deal in his fifth year on Tour, prevailing at the 1973 Sea Pines Heritage Classic. Confidence from that first victory propelled him to success the following year at the U.S. Open at Winged Foot and at the Piccadilly Match Play at Wentworth GC. Listen in as he recounts his 1975 successes which included another Piccadilly win and leading the U.S. side with 4 1/2 points in his first Ryder Cup with Arnold Palmer as the captain at Laurel Valley. We conclude this episode with Hale remembering his improbable comeback win at the 1976 Citrus Open and the life lesson from his father to always finish what you started. 5-time Ryder Cup player, Hale Irwin covers the middle years of his professional career beginning with a 3-win 1977 and his second Ryder Cup appearance. Hale Irwin, 3-time winner of the U.S. Open, concludes his look back on his PGA TOUR days by recounting his final few individual and team wins. As a 45-year-old Hale prevailed at the 1990 U.S. Open at Medinah with a comeback for the ages. He has fond memories of the 1991 Ryder Cup at Kiawah, not because of the result but because of the camaraderie and grittiness displayed by both sides. Hale derived much satisfaction from his final win at the 1994 Heritage Golf Classic, his third win at Harbour Town. His appearance as the only President's Cup Player/Captain in 1994 capped off an incredible regular Tour career and set the stage for great things to come, "FORE the Good of the Game."Give Bruce & Mike some feedback via Text. The Top 100 in 10 Golf PodcastThe story of a quest to play the Top 100 Golf courses in the UK & Ireland in just 10 yearsListen on: Apple Podcasts SpotifySupport the showFollow our show and/or leave a review/rating on: Our Website https://www.forethegoodofthegame.com/reviews/new/ Apple Podcasts https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/fore-the-good-of-the-game/id1562581853 Spotify Podcasts https://open.spotify.com/show/0XSuVGjwQg6bm78COkIhZO?si=b4c9d47ea8b24b2d Google Podcasts https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly9mZWVkcy5idXp6c3Byb3V0LmNvbS8xNzM3Mjc1LnJzcw About "FORE the Good of the Game” is a golf podcast featuring interviews with World Golf Hall of Fame members, winners of major championships and other people of influence in and around the game of golf. Today Skip replayed some of the show's favorite "Best Of" interviews featuring World Golf Hall of Famers Nick Faldo, Johnny Miller, Hale Irwin, Ben Crenshaw and Judy Rankin.
It was known as the Massacre at Winged Foot. The 1974 US Open was a brutal four days for some of the greatest golfers in the history of the game. Nicklaus, Palmer, Trevino, Floyd, Miller and Watson all were tamed by the course... but a little known 29-year old PGA tour veteran was slow and steady and when it came to Sunday, Hale Irwin was ready to pounce... with the help of his caddie... a homegrown kid by the name of Peter McGarey. And when we say kid, we're not kidding. Peter was 16 years old and right in the middle of one of the greatest group of golfers ever assembled. How did he hold up during this incredible week? What was it like working for a future Hall of Famer and how did the two get paired up for a week they'll both never forget? How did he react where everywhere he looked was a golf icon he grew up idolizing? The kid isn't a kid anymore but Peter still looks back on his great fortune from 50 years ago with the the awe of a teenager who was swept up in a moment he'll never forget. Only six men have won the U.S. Open Golf Championship at least three times, and Hale Irwin's three titles spanned 16 years. From his 7-over par (yes) winning score 50 years ago at Winged Foot to his "victory lap" at Medinah in 1990, Hale combined a cerebral approach with a wicked long-iron game to tame the beasts put forth by the USGA. Have a listen to the World Golf Hall of Famer who never shied from golf's biggest stages.
Mike Donald had a long career on the PGA Tour, making nearly 300 cuts and winning the 1989 Anheuser-Busch Classic. Mike is perhaps most famous for his runner-up finish in the 1990 US Open where he lost in a playoff to Hale Irwin after they were tied at the end of 72 holes and remained tied after their subsequent 18 hole playoff, thereby necessitating a sudden death playoff. Mike talks about growing up in South Florida, his challenges keeping his golf scholarship in college, life on the Tour in the 1980's both before and after the all-exempt tour, how technology has changed the game, and how nearly 35 years later he looks back on his special week at the US Open with added perspective.
We conclude our 7-part series with Bernhard Langer by looking back on his final two Senior majors including his win at the 2023 U.S. Senior Open at SentryWorld. He took down Wisconsin natives Steve Stricker and Jerry Kelly to capture his 12th major and his record-breaking 46th win on the Champions Tour, surpassing Hale Irwin's total by one. Bernhard was quite candid in this episode about his putting woes that plagued him throughout his career and give us insights into how he overcame the "Y" word. He provides a thoughtful response to our query aimed at understanding what has made him so great. Bernhard Langer has demonstrated to us what a generous and giving person he is and a tough competitor too as he concludes his amazing life story, "FORE the Good of the Game."Support the showFollow our show and/or leave a review/rating on: Our Website https://www.forethegoodofthegame.com/reviews/new/ Apple Podcasts https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/fore-the-good-of-the-game/id1562581853 Spotify Podcasts https://open.spotify.com/show/0XSuVGjwQg6bm78COkIhZO?si=b4c9d47ea8b24b2d Google Podcasts https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly9mZWVkcy5idXp6c3Byb3V0LmNvbS8xNzM3Mjc1LnJzcw About "FORE the Good of the Game” is a golf podcast featuring interviews with World Golf Hall of Fame members, winners of major championships and other people of influence in and around the game of golf. Some of the most recognizable names in golf used to walk the greens at Rio Pinar Golf. Now the new owners are hoping they will inspire the next golf greats to get their start in East Orange County with their family at their side. Gregor Tilch-Jensen and his wife recently bought Rio Pinar Golf and the duo isn't wasting any time breathing new life into the historic golf course. If the walls could talk they would probably tell you all about the Florida Citrus Open. “It was a great event they hosted here with an unbelievable winner's list, from Arnold Palmer, Lee Trevino, Hale Irwin, Julius Boros, all Hall of Famers and people who tried to win here and never did, Sam Sneade, Jack Nicklaus, they were here, couldn't do it.” But, the walls would also tell you about the new owners' plans to go beyond that history. Tilch-Jensen stood on the green telling the hosts of Florida's Fourth Estate that he sees this location as less “members only” and more community. “We want to be a destination for families,” Tilch-Jensen said. He said he is bringing new technology to his hitting bays, building a pickleball court and re-furbishing one of his tennis courts. The amateur golfer turned instructor, turned golf course owner told hosts Matt Austin and Ginger Gadsden that creating a space where parents and kids can play together is near and dear to his heart. “My kids love golf as well. My wife and I met on a golf course. It's just part of our life, it always has been,” Tilch-Jensen said. He admitted it's not as popular of a sport in his home country of Germany, but once he got a hold of a golf club, he fell in love and wanted to introduce that passion to the next generation of golf enthusiasts. To do that he said he has developed a long-term plan, which involves moving his wife and their children to Central Florida. He said he is committed to making Rio Pinar Golf a success again. “You want to make it work and you don't want to let down the people you love the most,” he said. His wife is fully onboard and has focused on helping to redesign the interior of the golf course's clubhouse. “It's not really like a golf club, it's really loungy-modern, which is located at a golf course. Leaving the former Champions' Room, which is now the Oak Room, just modernize that a little bit, which you still have the history part of it and still have the trophy from Arnold Palmer in it, but that's a separate space, so now again, everyone feels comfortable,” he said. Andy and Brendan begin this Monday episode after a highlight of the PGA Tour schedule by discussing some childcare angst. Then they quickly jump into a fabulous weekend of golf from Rivieria, where Jon Rahm ascended to world No. 1 with another win and Max Homa pushed him down the stretch. They hit on the notion of Rahm as “clearly” the best player in the world, if not most consistent. They praise Homa's post-game comments and continued approach pushing the best in the world down the stretch of primo events. They discuss how Riviera holds up, or doesn't, to the modern player and equipment. Oh, also, there's a Tiger chat, mostly about his prospects and reasons for optimism. Results discusses Bernie anchoring his way to Hale Irwin's record and the Pissbear getting a Euro Tour win. News hits on Thomas Pieters going to LIV, with some insight into what maybe prompted the move.

NFL – National Football League – Week 9 Last Night Detroit Lions 15, Green Bay Packers 9 Miami Dolphins 35, Chicago Bears 32 New England Patriots 26, Indianapolis Colts 3 Lions 15, Packers 9 – Rodgers throws 3 INTs, Lions hold on to beat Packers 15-9 Aaron Rodgers matched a career high with three interceptions and threw an incomplete pass on fourth down from the Detroit 17 in the final minute, letting the Detroit Lions hold on for a 15-9 win over the Packers in a matchup of slumping teams on Sunday. The Lions ended a five-game losing streak. The Packers have lost five straight for the first time since 2008 when their four-time NFL MVP was a first-year starter with the franchise. Dolphins 35, Bears 32 – Tua, Dolphins outlast Bears on Fields’ record rushing day Tua Tagovailoa threw for three touchdowns, Tyreek Hill had 143 yards receiving and the Miami Dolphins overcame a record-setting rushing effort by Justin Fields to beat the Chicago Bears 35-32. In a game where neither team did much to stop the other, the Dolphins had no trouble moving the ball against a gutted defense and made enough plays to come away with their third straight win. Fields ran for 178 yards, the most by an NFL quarterback in a regular-season game. He had a 61-yard touchdown run and threw for three scores. But it wasn’t enough for the Bears, who lost for the fifth time in six games. Patriots 26, Colts 3 – Pats get 9 sacks in dominant 26-3 victory over Colts Mac Jones had a touchdown pass, Nick Folk added four field goals and the Patriots finished with nine sacks to help New England beat the Indianapolis Colts 26-3. Get yourself ready for Sunday and stay in full compliance with our "Whoa, Daddy" CDST show. Could be we're coming up on another fantastic Father's Day finish at the US Open, and to get you in the mood, it's time to roll tape from some memorable battles, including Jack coming back at Baltusrol, Raymond Floyd shining at Shinnecock, Norman and Fuzzy waiving the white flag in 1984 and Hale Irwin's downing of Donald six years later.Of course, there'll also the NBA Finals to discuss, with the settling for 2nd Celtics buckling under the weight of some spicy Curry and dirty Poole. We've also got an infusion of MLB, persistent Blixx wearing out his Av's affection (right on his sleeve ... is that a new tattoo?), and the always exciting racing update with Mr. Miranda. And as for our clips of classic short putt misses (at the worst possible times), there isn't one among us who does have the True Grit to exclaim, "That reminds me of me".A state trooper arrests Carl (Steve Buscemi) and Gaear (Peter Stormare). When he refuses their bribes, Gaear takes his gun and shoots him. World Golf Hall of Fame member Hale Irwin looks back on the importance of notching his first career win at Harbour Town in 1971, the first of three wins at the Heritage. He then relives each of his three U.S. Open victories beginning with 1974 at Winged Foot where he won with a score of +7 as the USGA did not want a repeat of the Johnny Miller final round of 63 at Oakmont the previous year. He prevailed at Inverness Club in 1979 by 2 over Gary Player and Jerry Pate and then, who will forget his joyous high-five romp around the 18th green at Medinah in 1990 after draining a 60-footer to tie in regulation at the last. He prevailed in the thrilling Monday playoff with Mike Donald. Hale Irwin continues with his remarkable career story, "FORE the Good of the Game."
Ron Barr chats with legend Hale Irwin, one of the world's leading golfers from the mid-1970s to the mid-1980s. One of the few players in history to win three U.S. Opens, Irwin won a total of 20 times on the PGA Tour. As a senior golfer, he ranks first all-time in PGA Tour Champions victories and, along with Gary Player, David Graham, Bernhard Langer and Justin Rose, Irwin is one of only five golfers to win official tournaments on all six continents on which golf in played.

Bladed it, smiled it, chili dipper, chunk city, worm burner, gopher killer... if any of these describe your short game, then it's time to turn your ears on because this weeks' episode is here to help you get your short game under control! What you'll learn in today's episode The importance of quiet hands around the green How to develop a consistent touch from Hail Irwin Brandan Stooksbury's method of building a solid foundation for your short game Golf Strategy Academy Featured Videos Chipping/Pitching jail drill Hale Irwin's touch drill (sorry the audio is so bad!) No time to listen? Here's the transcript so you can Ctrl + f to where you need to be! Hey there, Golf Strategy School, Marty back with you here again and this episode's question comes from Chase. Chase is asking, his question reads, " Hey Marty, I was really burning a lot of strokes around the greens. Seems like I don't have a consistent low point in my chipping. Some are fat, some are thin, but really perfect. Any thoughts?" Well Chase, situations like this where you have inconsistent, I guess I'll say low point, it usually results from... At least with chipping, the fact that you're getting overly handsy in the actual action. So a lot of people especially beginners or newer folks, they'll get into this mindset that the fingertips and the hands have all the feel, so that should be what's controlling all of the force that goes into the shot as well as kind of cutting out those bigger muscles. I see all the time where people just take their wrist and I kind of see them just chop right at the ball, and those ones are even less consistent then kind of what you're describing. At least you're getting a couple that do end up going on target, maybe not just on target but actually correct distance wise. So the way we can kinda get around this, it's a really easy setup. If you have some water bottles this is a really easy thing to do. If you're on the course or if you are at your practice facility, heck, honestly you can do this at home. So you take two water bottles if you're at home they could be empty, and they should be empty. If you're on course then depending on how much when do you have, if you feel your empty water bottles are going to blow away, maybe put some water in them. But what you're going to do is you're going to take-two water bottles and you're going to set them up so one water bottle is about a foot behind the ball, the other water bottle is about a foot in front of the ball. So the idea is that these water bottles are going in the same direction as your feet, so actually perpendicular to your target line, but the idea here is that if you're flipping your club into that impact zone, you're not going to be able to consistently make your shot and not hit either one of those water bottles. Again with that kind of two foot window, I forget where I heard it from but someone referred to this as "chipping jail." I thought that was kind of cool, but that's essentially what you're putting yourself in, is your setting these defined parameters from where you can actually hit the ball, and you're going to get this very real physical feedback if you don't correctly accommodate those restraints. So again you're flipping into the ball which means that we got a quiet down those hands. I actually highly encourage you to go back and listen to Brandon Stooksbury's episode, and in that episode he talks about his book dealing with short game solutions, and Brandon's kind of a short game expert, and the idea is we want to remove as many variables as possible just like we want to do with everything. The less variable easier the solution becomes. So with shipping specifically if you're really getting wristy with it, that means that not just your arms and shoulders are moving, your wrist, what Brandon call them, "another hinge" and you want to remove as many of these hinges as possible because that allows you to be more consistent, the solution, in your chip shots. So like I said you can do this at home with probably a whiffle ball, I don't know if you would want to test the strength of your drywall or anything like that. But you just set down parameters, like I said about a foot in front and a foot behind. If you're really, really struggling keep in mind our kind of butter zone for a practice success rate is between 30% and 70%. So if you have that foot behind the ball and foot in front of the ball and you still can't do it at least 30% of the time then you might want to consider 18 inches in front and behind, or some variation of that to make it a little easier on yourself. Because you need to experience success in order to actually improve and not just get discouraged at yourself. So, again 30% - 70% is that optimal zone. Maybe this is an easy thing for you to do, okay I'm flipping my hands too much, I just need to rock my shoulders more. Well, then two feet might be too much room and you're able to do it every single time, well in that circumstance maybe pin it in 3 inches on each side. So then you're only dealing with an 18 inch span. You don't want to get it too small though because and you're really kind of chopping down at the ball, and that's going to take you and a negative direction in terms of your progress. But again your inconsistency at the bottom of that chip shot, it's a really small motion, we don't need a lot of hinges and things to add power, you're only moving the ball maybe 20, you mention green side. So even if your 10-20 yards off at the most you can still get away with it. The idea is that you want to get the ball on the ground as soon as possible because that removes variables. The longer the ball flies the more of a variables you have in that shot. Again Brandon talks about this in detail in his episode. Also, check out the coaching replays on the membership site one of them is with Brandon and it deals with exactly with this topic, so that's about an hour discussion there. Feel free to check that out in the Golf Strategy Academy member site. That will definitely, definitely help you out. The other thing that I might think help you a little bit is kind of learning a little touch around the greens. A lot of people, they run into the situation where one bad shot especially, not like a chunk, chip but when you kind of stuff it into thick grass, if the ball's sitting down and it's really hard to get out. I guess we can call it a chunk. So if you are in that situation or you've maybe had that one chunk shot, and now you feel like everything has to have all the this extra power just to get through it, remind yourself that this is one fluid motion. I saw this as a demo by Hale Irwin and to me it was just profoundly awesome. What he did, and I'll see if I can find the actual video (linked above), what he did if he's talking about chipping touch, specifically green side chipping touch like you are Chase, and he said, " Just take a ball, you stand you take your address like you're going to hit a shot and instead of swinging your club take a ball throw it at the cup." Try to "hit that shot", but you do it by throwing that ball. The idea here is that your hands with the club should move at that same pace. So you know maybe it takes you two or three balls to figure out what a good touch is in terms of tossing the ball, but that's an awesome way to kind of give yourself this different type of physical feedback, to maybe get your brain to grasp onto it a little bit better. And again just take that address throw the ball the cup and pay attention to how your hands are moving because that's all the after that they need to move during the chip shot as well. So I hope that helps you out Chase, absolutely let me know how it works in the membership Facebook group. Also if any of you are interested in joining the golf strategy Academy you can do so, you can hear more about it at golfstrategyschool.com/membership-info and there you can hear my little video in terms of what academy all entails, but we've got like 30 days, more than 30 days worth of practice routines up on the website. I've got a specific order for you to follow, that will actually improve your game. This isn't swing tips this is how to practice to actually get better. So I'm giving you custom, focused, practice routines to do this. And one of the things I'm tacking on for new members, if you join at the annual subscription not only do you get two months free but I'll also toss in a free coaching call. So, until next time everybody thank you so much for listening, don't forget to subscribe, rate, and review podcast. If you want more info on the membership you can check it out again at golfstrategyschool.com/membership-info otherwise I'll catch y'all in the short grass. Cheers.

It's a PGA TOUR Champions tournament with official event champions of the 2015 and 2016 seasons, winners of the majors since 2012 and ten professionals by invitation with a minimum of five or more career victories, including one major. It's a wonderful event for spectators on the beautiful Hualalai Golf Course, designed by Jack Nicklaus at Four Seasons Resort Hualalai at Historic Ka’upulehu. The Pro-Am is on Tuesday January 17-Wednesday January 18 and for the 54 hole stroke play event broadcast with a 1.8 million purse will be broadcast on NBC Golf Channel Thursday, Friday and Saturday January 19-21. Duffy Waldorf will defend. Advance tickets are available at pgatour.com/mec Week. $20 One Day Pass / $40 Tournament Pass (purchase on website) or at the Gate $25 Tournament Day Pass $ 50 Tournament Pass . The PGA Champions Tour players who have qualified for this years tournament are: Michael Allen, Billy Andrade, Woody Austin, Paul Broadhurst, Olin Browne, Mark Calcavecchia, Roger Chapman, Fred Couples, Joe Daley, Marco Dawson, Joe Durant, Carlos Franco, David Frost, Doug Garwood, Paul Goydos, Jay Haas, Kohki Idoki, Lee Janzen, Miguel Angel Jimenez, Bernhard Langer, Tom Lehman, Jeff Maggert, Scott McCarron, Rocco Mediate, Colin Montgomerie, Jesper Parnevik, Kenny Perry, Gene Sauers, Jerry Smith, Esteban Toledo, Kirk Triplett, Duffy Waldorf, Mark Wiebe, Ian Woosnam. The 10 sponsor exemptions include John Daly, Fred Funk, Hale Irwin, Tom Kite, Davis Love III, Sandy Lyle, Larry Nelson, Mark O’Meara, Tom Pernice Jr., Loren Roberts, Vijay Singh, Jeff Sluman, Jerry Smith, David Toms, Tom Watson Kelly Fliear, Tournament Manager and Brian Goin, head of PGA Tour Championship Management, Dave Senko, Senior Manager Communications at the PGA Tour, Pete Rolfing, PCR Sports< M and so many others who return each year. While we get an opportunity to see up close, Champions Tour players and be inspired by their golf, I think one of the best aspects of this event for the last 20 years is the funds that have been raised for local charities. The Rotary Club of Kona organizes the volunteers with Kris Hazard and Larry Webb continuing as volunteer co-chairs and in return the tournament donates to the Rotary Club of Kona Community Foundation. Big Island Junior Golf is one of the charities as well. I always look forward to Saturday when the keiki from the Big Island Junior Golf in Hilo sponsored by Mitsubishi come to the tournament after they play their own tournament at Mauna Lani Resort. They are knowledgeable golf fans and so enthused when getting autographs. While players are good with the fans, they are especially attentive to the juniors. In the past Tom Watson and Hale Irwin each year have a special interaction with the keiki joking and interacting with them as they signs autographs. I have friends who were junior golfers when this event started 20 years ago on the Big Island and no question being around this quality golf inspired my friends to practice, get on their high school team, earn college scholarships and a handful are now professional golfers. The Daniel R Sayre Foundation is another one of the charities. The Foundation was created by Dr. Frank and Laura Sayre in memory of their son Daniel who lost his life in a hiking accident 20 years ago in Pololu Valley. Recognizing the need for rescue equipment, the Daniel R Sayre Foundation with tremendous community support has raised well over a million dollars in monies and equipment for our Hawaii County Fire Department and Rescue Teams. David Marr III, Mark Rolfing, and Jay Radzavicz all with NBC Golf Channel return each year to be part of the broadcasts and reports from the Mitsubishi Electric Championship and lend their support for an event at Nanea with some of the Champions Tour players raising funds for the Hawaii State Junior Golf Association. The PGA Tour, Brendan Moynahan, Director of Golf Hualalai Golf Club and his staff, Kahu Billy Mitchell, “Uncle” Earl Regidor Manager, Ka’upulehu Cultural Center, the Four Seasons Resort staff and the volunteers have year after year created a world class event with players that just might inspire you to work on your golf game a little more or volunteer next year.

In 1991, the best golfers from the USA and Europe went head-to-head in one of the most bitter confrontations in the history of the Ryder Cup. Played shortly after the First Gulf War, some of the European team objected to the militaristic and fiercely partisan atmosphere encouraged by their American hosts. The tension spilled over into the tournament itself, which was decided on the last hole. Will Yates speaks to golfers Hale Irwin and Paul Broadhurst. (Photo: Getty Images)
