This is an episode we recorded in 2020 with long time Sky Sports Golf lead presenter, David Livingstone from Glasgow which we thought is well worth a revisit.  We will be back to our normal pod next week with a review of the 2024 golfing season.   This is the story of a humble Glasgow lad, who rose from reporting news in the local rag to sitting alongside Jack Nicklaus while presenting the US Masters live from Augusta National. David admits to stumbling into TV and golf after joining Sky Sports in its infancy.  He presented 12 Ryder Cups, umpteen major championships and travelled the world following the best players in the game for over 25 years. He has worked alongside some amazing people including Tony Jacklin and Jack Nicklaus as well as interviewing everyone from Arnold Palmer to Rory McIlroy. He talked about his relationships with Seve and Tiger Woods and tells some great stories of his best pal, Butch Harmon. He gave an insight into what is involved in broadcasting a golf tournament and how things have changed over the years. In a very honest chat, David also talks about his thoughts on Augusta, Earl Woods and even the BBC. Unassuming, professional, great fun but most of all a gentleman.

Former Secretary of the R&A, Peter Dawson joins us to relate his life story that began in Aberdeen Scotland. Born to non-golfing parents, Peter found his way to golf at age 11, paying the princely sum of one pound sterling for his annual subscription at Lothianburn Golf Club. A family move to Essex took him to Thorpe Hall Golf Club, the home course to famous English amateur Sir Michael Bonallack, whom Peter would ultimately succeed as the Secretary of the R&A. Peter captained the men's golf team at Cambridge University in 1969, the year Tony Jacklin became the first Englishman to win the British Open since Max Faulkner. To this day, Jacklin's triumph remains Peter's fondest Open memory. Before serving the game, Peter Dawson entered the commercial world to refine his business acumen, "FORE the Good of the Game."Give Bruce & Mike some feedback via Text. The Top 100 in 10 Golf PodcastThe story of a quest to play the Top 100 Golf courses in the UK & Ireland in just 10 yearsListen on: Apple Podcasts SpotifySupport the showFollow our show and/or leave a review/rating on: Our Website https://www.forethegoodofthegame.com/reviews/new/ Apple Podcasts https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/fore-the-good-of-the-game/id1562581853 Spotify Podcasts https://open.spotify.com/show/0XSuVGjwQg6bm78COkIhZO?si=b4c9d47ea8b24b2d Google Podcasts https://podcasts.google.com/feed/aHR0cHM6Ly9mZWVkcy5idXp6c3Byb3V0LmNvbS8xNzM3Mjc1LnJzcw About "FORE the Good of the Game” is a golf podcast featuring interviews with World Golf Hall of Fame members, winners of major championships and other people of influence in and around the game of golf. On this episode, I'm joined by former VP of Sales & Marketing for the Arnold Palmer Golf Company now Founder of Sqairz Golf Bob Winskowicz, The Confidence Doctor Dr. Bob Winters, and former NFL DB and Indiana State Hall of Famer Vencie Glenn. Bob Winskowicz takes us back to his days working with Mr. Palmer. He talks about their relationship and Arnie's mantra, "What's in it for the consumer?" Then he updates us on what sets the Sqairz models for 2024 apart from other golf shoes, the science behind why Sqairz helps us generate more swing speed and gain greater distance, and the brand's move into the baseball cleat market. Dr. Bob Winters is now going to be part of the show the first week of every month. This week he talks about his relationship with Arnold Palmer and the time he spent with the King. We also hear his meeting with the men's golf team at his alma mater Ball State University and their subsequent victories at the Dorado Beach Invitational and the MAC Match Play Championship. We also hear about the work he did recently with a couple of junior players over at The Concession Club, a wonderful Jack Nicklaus and Tony Jacklin co-design, and the confidence-building seminar with junior players in Colorado on the Summit Junior Tour. Rounding out this week's show is former NFL DB Vencie Glenn. Vencie played 10 seasons in the League for the Patriots, Chargers, Saints, Vikings, and Giants. I get Vencie's thoughts on the Chiefs current dynasty and Pat Mahomes' place in history. We also talk about his time playing for Tony Dunger in Minnesota when Dungy was their Defensive Coordinator. Vencie is also a really good golfer. He tells the story of his career-best round 67 plus the hole-in-one he made and the car he won at LaDainian Tomlinson's Celebrity Golf Tournament.

The job facing Tony Jacklin, the unlikely captain who took the reins of the European team as Ryder Cup captain in 1983, was a massive one: He had to bring an end to decades of American dominance. The situation on the ground was dire, and to put it plainly, he was inheriting a mess. Since the Cup began in 1927, Americans had won 20 times, lost three, and tied once. Even the addition of Team Europe in 1979, designed to level the playing field, hadn't stopped the U.S. from delivering two straight humiliations. Facing a talent gap, and playing on American soil, he had to stop history in its tracks. The remarkable transformation Jacklin engineered starting that year in Florida was as much psychological as it was tactical, and he had at his side the ideal playing lieutenant in Seve Ballesteros, a man who would become a Ryder Cup colossus. Together, they led the Europeans on a mission to win for the first time ever on American soil, and to redefine the entire event. What they accomplished over those three days was the start of one of the great turnaround stories in the history of sport.

After getting his first PGA victory in the U.S. at the 1986 Greater Greensboro Open, Sandy went on to win the Tournament Players Championship at TPC Sawgrass the following year. He prevailed at the 1988 Masters with an iconic 7-iron bunker shot setting up a closing birdie (ably described by runner-up Mark Calcavecchia in a cameo appearance) and opening the door for more Brits to win a green jacket at Augusta. The PGA TOUR took over Canada this weekend, and the headlines were Rory, JT, and Tony Finau, who played together Sunday for one of the most exciting finishes this year. And as hosts Alex Lauzon and Michael Russell share, it came at just the right time (2:04). Across the pond, the LIV Tour burst into reality as they hosted their first "tournament" outside of London. Alex and Michael wonder at the spectacle, and wonder about its relevance (4:09). The ladies represented big time on the DP World Tour, where the Scandinavian Mixed featured both men and women, and the winner, by 9 shots, was Linn Grant (10:38). Stateside, American Brittany Lincicome played to a T-6 on the LPGA Tour while being 28 weeks pregnant (11:47).  This week, attention turns to Brookline, MA and The Country Club for the US Open. Wonky New England golf will take over the usual "Toughest Test in Golf," while the LIV "stars" make their return to the states. Phil Mickelson's Monday press conference highlights what may be to come for the PGA TOUR defectors (12:38). As the CoL Book Club continues, Alex and Michael recap chapters 6-8 of Alan Shipnuck's "Phil," where we learn about the union of Phil and his caddy Bones, Tiger Woods's explosion onto the golf scene, and Phil's label of "Best Golfer to Never Win A Major" (17:15). In Tuned In, Michael celebrated love at a weekend wedding, while Alex was rocking out with the LIV Tour's apres golf concert series (22:35). This week's first guest is a professional golfer who qualified for his first US Open. Sean Jacklin shares his golf story, his plans for this weekend in Brookline, and what it's like playing in a tournament his father, Tony Jacklin, won in 1970 (26:28). Another US Open qualified and past guest, Taylor Montgomery, also joins the pod to chat about whats been going on in his golfing world since last joining, including earning his Korn Ferry Tour card, and qualified to play in his second US Open (44:53). Boston keeps things rolling this week, but having the US Open and Game 6 of the NBA Playoffs, in which Alex has high hopes the Celtics will take the series to a pivotal Game 7 (56:27). ‘With his beautiful use of language, Proctor has Bernard Darwin's gift of bringing a moment to life. Delightful and insightful, capturing the very spirit of the age. The Long Golden Afternoon is an instant classic' - Roger McStravick - Author & Historian Stephen Proctor joins us today to chat about his second book, a followup to Monarch of the Green and the golfing feats of Young Tommy Morris. The Long Golden Afternoon tells the story of the transformative generation of golf that followed the rise of Young Tom Morris - an era of sweeping change that saw Scotland's national pastime become one of the rare games played around the world. It begins with the first epochal performance after Tommy - John Ball's victory at Prestwick in 1890 as the first Englishman and the first amateur to win the Open Championship - and continues through to the outbreak of the Great War. If Tommy ignited the flame of golf in England, Ball's breakthrough turned that smoldering fire into a conflagration. The generation that followed would witness the game's coming of age. It would see an explosion in golf's popularity, the invention of revolutionary new balls and clubs, the emergence of professional tours, the organization of the game and its rules, a renaissance in writing and thinking about golf, and the decision that the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews must always remain the sport's guiding light. Without him, the famous little trophy might be gathering dust in someone's attic. It is not an exaggeration to say Tony Jacklin transformed the Ryder Cup. As Europe's talisman, he captained a rejuvenated continent to victories in 1985 and 1987, retained the trophy with a draw in 1989, and began to turn what had been a tired and jaded exhibition into one of the world's biggest team competitions. Those crowds at Whistling Straits a few weeks ago, the thunder clap that rocked Paris from titanic stands in 2018? Would any of that have been possible were it not for Jacklin and a collection of improbably talented golfers in the 1980s? Now the architect of an age of European dominance in the biennial event has put down his experiences – and those of his wider career – in a new book: Tony Jacklin: My Ryder Cup Journey. He's our guest this week on The Slam podcast…

Episode 15 of the Green Room Golf Course Podcast crosses the Irish Sea a month ahead of schedule to chat with Graeme Beatt, who is preparing for the biggest four days of his career.   Following the conclusion of the US Open last weekend, the next and final major on the golfing schedule is the Open Championship, taking place this year at Royal Portrush Golf Club in Northern Ireland.   This will mark the first time the Open has been held outside of England or Scotland since 1951, when Royal Portrush again hosted the event. Back then it was the flamboyant Max Faulkner who lifted the Claret Jug, the last Englishman to do so until Tony Jacklin in 1969.   There are some amazing stories waiting to be written this time out. Rory McIlroy shot 61 at the club aged just 16, while hometown hero Graeme McDowell will be playing on a course prepared by his brother and greenkeeper, Gary, who's a part of the Royal Portrush team. So there's tons to look forward to.   For Graeme Beatt, it's going to be the first major challenge of his career. The 39-year-old was born and raised in St Andrews and has been greenkeeping since 1995, when he spent the summer working at Scotscraig. His career has taken him to Kingsbarns, Royal Melbourne, Castle Dargan and County Sligo, before joining Royal Portrush as course manager in 2015, just a few months before the club was announced as the host of the 2019 Open. Throughout preparations for the event, Graeme has kept an incredible blog, that details everything the team has undertaken to get the Dunluce in championship condition for the Open. Head to the BIGGA website to find out more about the BIGGA Awards ahead of the closing day on 31 October 2019.  The Green Room Golf Course Podcast is produced by Karl Hansell on behalf of the British and International Golf Greenkeepers Association. Phil Mickelson finished in 2nd for a record 6th time at the Open. Scott is the first Brit to win since Tony Jacklin won more than 30 years ago.  Todd Lewis, The Golf Channel, calls in to talk to Holly and Rich about the U.S. Open. Todd was sating that if you followed Justin Rose's Tour path, you should've seen this coming. It should be no surprise. Since 2010, his breakout year, he has been on the upward path. Todd wonders how Rose will deal with the the pressure after winning a Major championship.  Holly and Todd talk about Steve Stricker's errant shot on the 2nd hole and the fact that he was able to fight back but unfortunately come up short. After Saturday's round, Todd interviewed Phil and Phil said that he was hitting the ball the best he'd ever at the U.S. Open and that he was in the best position to win the trophy that he covets and cherishes the most. Todd felt that may force Phil to press on Sunday and that is what it seemed he did. Todd said that of the past 19 major championships, there have been 18 different winners and neither have been Tiger or Phil. Todd and Holly wrap up the segment talking briefly about Tiger Woods' injury and it preventing him from playing in his tournament. Dr. Gio Valiante, Sports Psychologist and Mental Golf Coach of Justin Rose and author of Fearless Golf calls in to talk to Holly and Rich. Dr Gio talks about Justin's focus that he learned from Fearless Golf. Repeating the same routine before each and every shot. Preparation is the key and that his golfers possess  Dr Gio feels that Confidence and Motivation are two key hallmarks of the game that need to be protected. Golfers take a roller coaster ride while playing golf and he said that golfers can get easily burnout. Players need to get time away from the game. He said it is good to know why you play the game and he did a survey asking players why they play. For the love of the game, or they enjoyed some sort of reward, attention or accolade The doctor, recently named the guru of the year by The Golf Channel, has released his second book "Golf Flow," which is a 10 year study of golfers when they get into a zone while playing. Bob Harig, ESPN.com, calls in to wrap up the U.S. Open recap show. Bob feels that if a golfer was just a fraction off Merion would expose that and it did to several golfers. Bob and Holly talk about Jason Day and how he "shows up" in the major championships and plays extremely well, but only has one win on Tour. Holly talks to Bob about Hunter Mahan having a tie of the lead before the final holes of the Open and wasn't able to close it out. Bob talks about how close the out of bounds being only a yard off the green and forcing players to put right. Bob talked about how the USGA set up Merion and how tough it was.

Holly G calls in from The Concession Golf Club in Sarasota, Fla. while Rich Bianco handles the show from the studio. The Concession, Jack Nicklaus signature golf course in association with Tony Jacklin, is hosting the Big Ten Match Play Championship Feb 10th and 11th. The event will broadcasted on Big Ten. ESPN.com's Bob Harig calls in from Pebble Beach to talk about Tiger's return for his first event on the PGA Tour of the season. Bob reports that the 3 courses the players are playing on this week at Pebble Beach are in great shape and Tiger is playing in this event for the first time in 10 years. Tiger's iron play is been pin high which is what he is looking for and what Bob feels put Tiger in position to win at Abu Dhabi. Bob also commented on the fact that Tiger has not played enough competitive golf and the more he plays, the better he will get.  Tiger is teamed with Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo and is a scratch golfer, which should help Tiger and let him focus on his game. Love him or hate him, with Tiger back on the Tour, ticket sales have been up 30%. Phoenix Open is unique and that is how 515,000 show up.  Bob said that they are prepared for it and that the community is involved and embrace the event. Collegiate Reporter Asher Wildman from Golfweek is with Holly G at The Concession Golf Club talking about the Big Ten Match Play tournament that starts tomorrow.  Asher talks about recent PGA Tour winner Kyle Stanley and the fact that he knows him pretty well and how Kyle prepares for a tournament and how badly he wanted to win.  Asher feels that the young 20 something year olds are poised to win and it should be no surprise to anyone who follows the game. Asher says that UCLA, the lady's defending collegiate champion, is so deep that they lost players to the LPGA Tour. He feels Texas is definitely the team to beat on the men's side.  Asher also feels that anything can happen though in Match Play . UCF has two new recruits and is probably the favorite to win Conference USA for the men's division. Check out collegiate on Golfweek at www.golfweek.com or follow Asher Wildman on Twitter @golfweekwildman. Every week there is a conference breakdown on Golfweek. The Golf Channel's Todd Lewis calls in to wrap up the show. The trio talk about a new and improved Tiger and comment on his press conference. Todd's biggest point that he took away from Tiger's interview was that Tiger is more at peace with a lot of things.  Life, his game, etc.

Jimmy Ballard, Pioneer of Connection. No instructor in the game of golf has ever resurrected more champion golf swings than Jimmy Ballard. Residing a the Ocean Reef Club in Key Largo, Florida, the founding "Pioneer of Connection in the golf swing, Jimmy Ballard continues as one of the top golf instructors in the world. In 1988 alone, Ballard's "connection" method stimulated victories in four major international tournaments with the U.S. Open Winner Curtis Strange, (who would add another Open title in '89); Masters Champion Sandy Lyle; British Open victor Seve Ballesteros, and British Amateur champion, Sweden's Christian Harden. A teachers' "Grand Slam" if there ever was one. From top money winners, to PGA / LPGA / SR.PGA champions and record breaking accuracy merits, Ballard has been praised for their successes. Named by Golf Magazine, the '80's "Teacher of the Decade", Ballard began setting his sights to the future. In '86, he was invited to join the telecast of the British Open at Turnberry for ESPN, returning to television after regular appearances from his highly popular home video instructional series, "The Jimmy Ballard Golf Connection". A demand for further directional videotapes was met with the '89 release of "The Fundamental Golf Swing."During these early years, Ballard created a dictionary of golf terminology sufficient in it's scope to assist the beginner as well as the professional. His famous "Seven Common Denominators" and "Misleading Terms" swept golf magazine headlines nationwide, reaching international recognition by the late 1970's. His 1981 book, "How To Perfect Your Golf Swing," outlined the golf swing in sequential detail, specifying inaccuracies in teaching golf over the years due to his discovery of a "deceptive feel" as opposed to actuality, and clarifying the "identifiable essential movements present in great ball strikers "…. Stressing that "great ball strikers" have not been singular to one sport or activity. Arthur Ashe used them in tennis, Joe DiMaggio perfected them in baseball, and Ben Hogan mastered them in golf and Jimmy named it "Connection"Ballard, in spreading his gospel, has spoken to most of the PGA Sections around the country. In December of 1996, he was selected as one of the top 4 teachers in the world, to make his presentation to the contingent of PGA members gathered from the United States as well as 23 other countries. He is credited with making the 1996 Tommy Armour PGA Teaching & Coaching Summit a major success.Swedish superstar Jesper Parnevik, has had continued success after first coming to Ballard with Sweden's national Golf Team in the mid 80's. He credits Jimmy with "teaching him all there is to know!"The 1997 Junior Champion was Jason Allred, who started working with Jimmy at 15. European Ryder Cup captain, Tony Jacklin improved after seeing Ballard. In late 2004, Rocco Mediate came to give it one last chance. His back could not go on without making changes. "The guy is brilliant, just genius."In March 2008 Rocco brought US Ryder Cup Captain Paul Azinger to see Jimmy. The list goes on… www.jimmyballardgolf.comAvila Beach Golf Resort - www.avilabeachresort.com Blacklake Golf Resort - www.blacklake.comInn at Avila Beach - www.avilabeachca.comAvila LaFonda Hotel - www.avilalafondahotel.comGolfland Warehouse - www.golflandwarehouse.comSlickstix - www.slickstix.comFor more information on Golf Talk Radio with Mike & Billy visit www.golftalkradio.com and visit www.centralcoasttoday.com for Golf Talk TV with Mike & Billy.
