Their story is simultaneously romantic and inspiring. Both Barry and Shirley Draper were very involved in the arts in school. Their path led them to serving in several churches, and most recently to oversee the formation of the Citrus Alliance for the Arts based in Clermont. While Covid's arrival slowed their progress, they are now full-steam ahead with their first major production - Amazing Grace, the Musical, set for February 2023. This delightful couple's heart for God and His people is evident in this episode.

In the final installment of The Burn Bag Podcast’s miniseries with the Atlantic Council’s Scowcroft Center, A’ndre and Ryan have Barry Pavel and Matthew Kroenig, the Center’s Director and Deputy Director, on to reflect on the Biden Administration’s performance in the actual first 100 days with respect to security policy. We discuss how the first 100 days might indicate future trends in policymaking, such as with alliance building and the swift toughness the Biden Administration has shown on China and Russia. Both Barry and Matt provide their praise and criticism of some decisions, praising the quickness with which President Biden has addressed some issues such as cyber, while expressing concern over a lack of policy on North Korea and an underestimation in terms of the “need for speed” with regards to China’s developments. We spend the rest of the interview going over some overarching themes and trends within the first 100 Days, and the challenges that lie ahead for President Biden.

The guys began hour 2 by acknowledging that "everyone hates Barry." This comes after a political discussion in hour one. The guys have a debate on the different types of playing fields such as UH TDECU stadium vs. Lambeau fields. The next debate is veganism. Both Barry and Joel laughed at the idea of going vegan.
This week’s guest is Thaniya Keereepart, Head of Product, International at Patreon. Thaniya joined Patreon after working with Major League Baseball (MLB) and TED, moving into the digital space. Raising Your Hand Some people gravitate towards structure, but people like Thaniya thrive on unstructured paths. She says, “The through-line of all of my turning points has been that I have a habit of raising my hand to volunteer to do things I don't really know how to do.” She credits her bravery to learning through doing: she understands how to iterate so she puts guardrails in place to learn what works and be flexible and adaptive when unintended consequences occur. She relates how her Game Day program crashed in the opening MLB game, with four million users online. That scary moment taught her how to handle live events. Something admirable about that environment, however, is that when anything broke, everyone came together to fix it. Barry notes that high-performance cultures focus on solving the problem and improving the system, rather than blaming an individual. This allows everyone to feel comfortable and give their best. Building an Inclusive Team When you’re building products for the masses, you want your team to reflect the diversity of your consumers. The best performing teams are usually the most diverse. Both Barry and Thaniya had to unlearn a great deal when they started working in diverse environments. Thaniya was used to working largely with males in college and at MLB, so there was a culture shock when she started at TED, but it opened her eyes to what it’s like to work in an environment with people of various backgrounds, cultures and genders. Barry says that he never saw the problem of a lack of diversity and inclusion until he started to work in San Francisco. He was in a bubble of sorts at Thought Works, his previous workplace since it was the norm to have a diverse workforce. He felt a call to action to share the values he learned at Thought Works in his new, male-dominated workplace. Sharing a Beautiful Vision of the Future It’s important to share a vision of the future. Thaniya believes in creating big change in small chunks, creating value that can be seen and felt immediately. She involves the teams that will benefit from the change in the product development phase. These teams then become champions of the new product. When you start small, Barry adds, you create evidence of the future you’re trying to build; you build trust and confidence that your big vision can come to life. It’s also important to anchor the big change with a beautiful narrative, says Thaniya. Engaging Customers Part of re-platforming includes building a change management system to set customer expectations. It’s unwise to have big changes foisted on your customers suddenly. Thaniya’s strategy at TED was to create excitement around the coming changes by inviting customers to be part of a beta program. They felt that they were helping to build TED’s new platform, which engaged them and made them champions of the coming change. In Australia, vegan and animal liberation activism has recently become intense and disruptive, invading farms, restaurants, and city centers. They’re doing everything from rescuing animals to blocking traffic, and occupying steakhouses. Some argue that these new activists are needlessly victimizing innocent farmers, business owners, and consumers. Others argue that the activists are only doing what’s necessary to stand up for the innocent victims of farmers, business owners, and consumers. For any cause, when change does not seem to happen, or happen quickly enough, movements can turn to more confrontational styles of protests, or “uncivil disobedience.” Is this morally defensible, or is civility a must in any kind of protest? Guest voices include Kimberley Brownlee, Chris Delforce, Candice Delmas, Lauren Gazzola, Paula Hough, David Jochinke, Joanne Lee, Brian Leiter, Clare McCausland, Tyler Paytas, Jacy Reese, Jeff Sebo, and Peter Singer. For Slate Plus, there is full bonus companion episode featuring Barry talking with Stephen Metcalf of Slate Culture Gabfest about the philosophical issues raised in the episode. Both Barry and Stephen try to come to terms with whether they think we can separate the morality of activist tactics with the morality of their causes. In this transmission of Underground Radio, Miss Ice and The Shadow watched the DC Comics animated film entitled [[[Flashpoint Paradox]]], the film that kicked off the New 52 comic series. We start with our initial reactions to the movie, but very quickly dive into discussing the logistics of time travel and the relevant paradoxes that are at play. Our discussion starts off a little timey whimey, but there is an interesting discrepancy that holds our attention for a great deal of the conversation. The movie, at large, was entertaining, but we struggled with seeing how the events actually came about to provoke the events that occur when Barry wakes up at his keyboard in the alternate timeline. Both Barry and Zoom are aware of the previous timeline, while Barry must adjust to the new timeline, it seems as though Zoom is well-immersed. Read more... Rev. Barry Draper is a lifelong friend of our pastor, Dr. Randy M. Cheek. Both Barry and Randy grew up here at Olive Springs. Listen as Barry shares his testimony and he sings two songs just prior to Dr. Randy's message on Sunday, July 29, 2012 at Olive Springs.
I guess I should stop making promises for a certain date, as things inevitably come up. At least I'm only a day late with plenty of time before Halloween and Pride (for the ATL) this weekend. Anywho, let's get down to it. This particular mix is decidedly more circuit oriented with lots of big room beats to spread around. One of my big favorites of the moment is the Simone Denny and Barry Harris collaboration "Drama Queen." Ooh, did I just write Barry Harris? You bet! The former half of Thunderpuss has now returned from exile with his guns blazing! One of the things I didn't get around to mentioning in the recent Chrome Edition 2003, was that 2003 was the year Thunderpuss split, despite the fact that the TP franchise was still very much in demand by artists and club-goers around the globe. Both Barry and Chris gave separate interviews to About.com in 2004 which cover their early years and how Thunderpuss came about down to their amicable split in 2003. Fast forward to 2009, and Barry's back with "Drama Queen" a ripping track where circuit meets 80's electronica. This is a hot original production from Barry that attempts to break up the monotony of many of today's circuit tracks. While the actual song doesn't cover any new territory, it's familiar theme rings well with the gay crowd; but it's the actual production that people will be shaking too. I'm hoping this isn't a one-off and that we'll be getting even more from Barry in the near future. For now, all I want to say is "welcome back Barry, we missed you!" I also want to give a HUGE shoutout to my new favorite producer Matt Moss from New York. A graphic designer by day (he's gotta pay the bills) and producer/DJ/remixer the rest of the time, like many of us, Matt has been hit by the recession. Matt approach's each production based on what the song requires rather some cookie cutter formula where you just slap on the vocals over the same basic beats like many other producers do (without mentioning names). It's his unique style and unquestionable understanding of his craft that makes him a surefire bet for success. I've included two of his mixes in this set. The first "Wendy Williams Theme" an ode to the infamous gossip talk trash radio host, which is nothing short of pure fun! The second mix is Madonna's "Like a Virgin" which he has completely re-worked from top to bottom making this a welcome addition to the upcoming Pride festivities this weekend in the ATL. Matt seems to think these are not his best work, and maybe not (I haven't had the chance to listen to everything), but they are outstanding productions that are sure to move the boys on any dancefloor from coast to coast. You can check out Matt's work on his blog at mattmossforever.com. Make sure to drop him a note, especially if you pick up anything for use in your own sets. I promise you, he's a really nice guy without the attitude and like most of us would love to have some feedback about his work. Finally, you may have noticed an Eagles song in the track list. Last year's Halloween Edition included the memorable remake of the Ministry classic "(Every Day Is) Halloween" by Dangerous Muse. I didn't really have anything that would fit for this year's gay ghouls and goblins, but when I recently came across Alex Dubbing's rework of "Hotel California" I knew this was an absolute must. Check out the lyrics and you'll understand why: Mirrors on the ceiling, The pink champagne on ice And she said, we are all just prisoners here, of our own device And in the master's chambers, They gathered for the feast The stab it with their steely knives, But they just can't kill the beast Last thing I remember, I was Running for the door I had to find the passage back To the place I was before Relax, said the night man, We are programmed to receive. You can checkout any time you like, But you can never leave! And that's my wrap-up for the week. I'm going to be super busy the next two or three...
