Jane grew up in a loving family even though both her parents were alcoholics, her dad recovering in Alcoholics Anonymous and her mum still actively drinking. Her parents split when she was around 6 years old, and her mum's bender-drinking quickly escalated. Jane and her sister took care of her mum for a few years until her father began to look after them again for two years.Jane grew up fast, felt ill at ease with her school life and started rebelling at home, began drinking and taking drugs. She moved out of home at 16 yo and her drinking increased, even though she didn't want to end up like her mum. After falling in with the wrong crowd, her drinking and drug taking progressed and after a particularly bad drinking--bender, when her mum called her an alcoholic, Jane realized that if it was that obvious then she needed help. Jane was familiar with AA from her dad's involvement and found recovery from alcohol and then drugs. Jane was also introduced to Alateen and eventually Al-Anon to help her cope with the trauma of growing up in an alcoholic family. If you would like to find out a bit more about alcoholism for yourself or a friend, then you can give Alcoholics Anonymous a call on 1300 222 222 or check out their website aa.org.au.If someone else's drinking is causing you a problem, then you can phone the Al-Anon Family Groups helpline on 1300 252 666 or go online at al-anon.org.au for more information. You can show your support to the Living Free show and keep us on air by:subscribing to 3CR https://www.3cr.org.au/subscribeand/or donating to 3CR https://www.3cr.org.au/donateMusic played in this episode was provided by the artists, via Australian Music Radio Airplay Project (amrap.org.au):@115:17 - Merri-May Gill: Round and Round (https://amrap.org.au/track/merri-may-gill-paris-moree-round-and-round)@38:31 - Merri-May Gill: Home Brew (https://amrap.org.au/track/merri-may-gill-paris-moree-home-brew)@55:26 - Merri-May Gill - Good Dog (https://amrap.org.au/track/merri-may-gill-paris-moree-good-dog)
222 - The Two Buckets: A Simple Way to Solve Life's Problems Hi everyone, it's Jill from the North Woods! In this episode, I'm sharing one of the biggest life lessons I ever learned—the concept of putting problems into two buckets: things I can change and things I cannot. This idea, rooted in the Serenity Prayer, has helped me navigate everything from growing up with an alcoholic parent to financial struggles, career changes, and even weight loss. I'll take you through the history of this powerful mindset, from ancient Greek philosophers to modern problem-solving techniques, and share real-life examples of how shifting my focus has made all the difference. If you've ever felt stuck, overwhelmed, or unsure of how to tackle life's challenges, this episode is for you. The Serenity Prayer and How It Shaped My ThinkingI first learned the Serenity Prayer in my teens while attending Alateen, a support group for children of alcoholics. This simple yet profound message helped me reframe my struggles, allowing me to focus on what I could change instead of feeling powerless over what I couldn't. The Long History of This WisdomThe idea of separating problems into what's within our control and what isn't has been around for centuries. I share insights from historical figures like Epictetus, Solomon ibn Gabirol, and Shantideva, all of whom recognized the power of focusing on what we can control. Real-Life Applications of the Two Buckets Approach-Growing Up with an Alcoholic Parent – I couldn't stop my dad from drinking, but I could create a full, active life outside of that challenge.-Politics & Global Issues – I can't change everything, but I can vote, volunteer, and contribute where I can.-Financial Stability & Retirement Worries – Social Security's future is uncertain, but I can prepare by saving more and making smart financial decisions.-Weight Loss & Health – I once thought my weight was out of my control until I found new solutions and the right support. Re-Evaluating What's in Your “Can't Change” BucketSometimes, we assume a problem is out of our hands when it's really not. I share examples of creative problem-solving—like how a simple change (adding mirrors) made people stop complaining about slow elevators. The key is to step back, get a new perspective, and challenge assumptions. Takeaways:✅ Put problems into two buckets: Can you change it or not?✅ Focus on action instead of worrying about things beyond your control.✅ Re-evaluate your buckets over time—something that seemed unchangeable might have a solution you haven't seen yet.✅ Seek outside advice when you feel stuck—sometimes an expert or a fresh perspective can make all the difference.✅ If something is in the "can change" bucket, take the first step today. This mindset shift has helped me reduce stress and solve problems more effectively, and I hope it helps you too. Now, I challenge you—think about a problem in your life right now. Which bucket does it belong in? Let me know what you think! Email me at Jill@startwithsmallsteps.com, comment on my channel, or share this episode with someone who might need it. Katherine grew up as the eldest daughter of an alcoholic mum and became the surrogate parent in the family as her mum's drinking progressed. She was exposed to alcohol early in life, started drinking around 12 or 13 years old but it was around 15 or 16 that she sought it out.Often drinking to blackout, Katherine regularly had to ask her friends what had happened the night before and frequently learnt of her aggressive and abusive behaviour whilst drunk, burning many close relationships. At 17 yo, her mum started going to Alcoholics Anonymous meetings and her behaviour began to change. Katherine was introduced to Alateen and eventually Al-Anon to help her cope with the trauma of growing up in an alcoholic family. She started attended AA meetings with her mum but still felt that she had a few good years of drinking ahead of her. At 19 yo Katherine realized that she could no longer struggle with alcohol alone and asked for help in AA. She found that attending AA meetings was like going to the gym, the more effort you put in the better the outcome. Katherine regularly attends AA and Al-Anon meetings. You can show your support to the Living Free show and keep us on air by:subscribing to 3CR https://www.3cr.org.au/subscribeand/or donating to 3CR https://www.3cr.org.au/donateMusic played in this episode was provided by the artists, via Australian Music Radio Airplay Project (amrap.org.au):@14:55 - Maggie Rachel Lockhart: Comfort Zone (https://amrap.org.au/release/maggie-rachel-lockhart-comfort-zone)@32:55 - Hazel Ray: I See You (https://amrap.org.au/track/hazel-ray-i-see-you-i-see-you)@54:19 - Drew Wilson - Happiness (https://amrap.org.au/release/drew-wilson-happiness)@58:00 - Mark Howard - Under Her Spell (https://amrap.org.au/track/mark-howard-under-her-spell)

Tribe Member Merleen talks about how Tribe Sober's 66 day Challenge kickstarted her journey to sobriety Doing a 66 day Challenge takes care of two big things that we worry about when want to quit drinking…First of all we worry about what other people will say… That's an easy one with a Challenge – say you're on a health kick so you're taking a break from drinking… The second thing that people worry about is the F word…the F word stands for Failure – what if I can't do this Frever – – how on earth I am going to stop drinking Forever… Well we don't use either of those words at Tribe Sober We don't say Failure because we either succeed or we learn…. For the 66 day Challenge you get a tracker and we say to you just see how many alcohol free days you can get out of 66… We never say Forever at Tribe Sober… We believe you need to do this in stages… 66 days – then the odds are that you feel so great you want to keep going … to 100 days Sign up – get a tracker – how many days can you manage Sign up for the Challenge by going to tribesober.com homepage – just click on the #Sober66 graphic You'll get a tracker, a daily email with tips, tools and inspiration and of course you'll get to connect with others who are doing the Challenge. That's exactly what todays guest Merleen did – and now she's 5 years sober… In this episode:- Merleen was the child of an alcoholic father She was actually a member of Alateen although her father never attended AA and in fact he died shortly after being committed to a rehab facility. Her drinking career started relatively late in life as of course she was well aware of the dangers. However by her forties she was self medicating the stress she was experiencing in her career in the police force. Merleen was also diagnosed with bipolar disorder, depression, and PTSD, Despite recognizing the dangers, she often mixed medication with alcohol, worsening her condition. Her drinking increased significantly during her time working in Somalia Merlene experienced several traumatic events, including a severe bike accident, which led to periods of blackout drinking. She attempted suicide and was hospitalized, which became a turning point in her life. In 2019, Merlene decided to quit drinking, initially intending to do so for only 66 days. At the end of her Challenge she joined Tribe Sober which enabled her to embrace a permanent alcohol free lifestyle She has experienced so many benefits - including better emotional health, rekindling her love for dancing, and forming meaningful connections within the sobriety community. She started coaching in order to help others - she focuses on sobriety, menopause, and aging gracefully. Merlene offers a 21-day detox and purification program, including coaching sessions and dietary guidance. Natalie grow up with an alcoholic father and a religious mother who kept the peace by avoiding conflict with the alcoholic. Feeling overlooked in her family, Natalie looked forward to a life independent of it. When she moved away to study and begin a career, she found that she still had to reckon with her family relationships, finding difficulties with each of her parents at different times, reconciling with her father at one point and separating herself from her mother at another. At a low point in her early thirties, Natalie chanced upon a TV program that mentioned support for families of alcoholics and went to her first Al-Anon meeting. Dan, a member of Al-Anon, grew up in a household in which another person's drinking was out of control. One of his parents was safe and nurturing during the day but in the evenings became a more dangerous presence. This inconsistency resulted in Dan feeling confused about how to trust people and eventually angry and distant from his parents. At 15 he went to Alateen where he found it healing to be in the company of other teenagers who understood his situation, did not judge and spoke authetically about their own experiences. My guest this week is Tribe member Suzanna Poroski - a dance, a choreographer, a singer and a piano player! She's recently celebrated her first Soberversary so I began our conversation by her to introduce herself In this episode:- Suzanna's first experience of alcohol was at the age of 14 when she got into her father's brandy Rather than being repulsed by the taste of it she actually drank it until she blacked out As Suzanna said enthusiasm for alcohol after the very first drink is a warning sign of possible problems in the future She also remembers leaving school at lunchtime to drink beers at a friend's house Her father was a drinker and her parents divorced when she was 13 - Suzanna left home at an early age Fiercely independent with an obsessive need to be liked she would go drinking with her friends in bars at the age of 16 – then bring people back to her place for drinks Drinking and driving was normalized in her friendship group Suzanna worked as a choreographer at Club Med in Bermuda and created a rule around her drinking She would only drink every second night – just like the teenage drinking, making rules around our drinking are a sign of dependence Suzanna describes Club Med as a breeding ground for alcoholics - when she left at the age of 30 she assumed that her drinking patterns would go back to "normal" As a child of an alcoholic Suzanna was familiar with the 12 steps from her Alateen meetings so when her own drinking started to escalate she went to AA As a dancer she was under huge pressure to stay slim so also struggled with her eating patterns so she went to Overeaters Anonymous as well! She did achieve period of sobriety via AA but also had some bad drinking episodes Like the time she was driving a rented car and woke up after a blackout with no memory of where she'd parked the car Or the time when she was so shaken by a drunk driving episode that she had to sleep with the lights and tv on for fear of lying in the dark and going into her own head as she puts it – the “bad neighbourhood” I think she called it! She was in New York on 9/11 so although she wasn't directly affected just like the rest of the world she was shocked and horrified Suzanna lost her job as a result of 9/11 which meant she could stay in her apartment – eating drinking and watching Netflix – trying to numb her feelings She got to a point where the drinking just wasn't working anymore so she managed quite lengthy spells of sobriety but always went back to drinking In 2014 she lost her business so once more turned to Netflix, drinking and food to cope She did manage to quit drinking but replaced it with an obsessive running routine – 5 miles a day and only missing a few days in 17 months She managed almost 3 years in sobriety with AA and then had a slip up… At Tribe Sober we often talk about “uncoupling positive experiences from alcohol” – the classic one here in South Africa is “I can't enjoy the sunset without a glass of wine” – of course we have to replace those patterns with more healthy habits like “watching the sunset with an alcohol free drink”! So back to Suzanna's slip up – she'd cleaned the house, done her hair and make up and was waiting for some guests to arrive – everything was good and she felt an irrational urge to celebrate with a drink that had been left over from a previous party… That's when she started to wonder if AA was no longer working for her She dived into the quitlit and started to explore different approaches At the same time she felt her body was no longer tolerating alcohol like it used to… and giving her physical feedback that life would be better sober She still had a mental struggle going on, the cognitive dissonance that so many of us are familiar with – our conscious mind telling us to quit and being challenged by our subconscious beliefs that we need alcohol to enjoy our lives At Tribe Sober we talk about our “Not This” moment Suzanna had her "Not This" moment when she was walking along a beautiful beach but rather than basking in the beauty of her surroundings her mind was occupied with finding a little bar where she could drink her wine This made her so angry she decided she was done As she said “alcohol is insidious – the way it slowly becomes your everything” Suzanna talked about the Tipping Point that we get to when we've been trying to quit drinking for years and then one day something shifts and everything falls into place All the Sober Stretches you've done, all the quitlit you've read, all the conversations come together and bring about a shift.. We hear this a lot at Tribe Sober and as Suzanna said it's the reason why we must never stop trying – it will work in the end I love what she said about her personal Tipping Point “it came in quietly, I didn't tell anybody, I just knew…and I felt a quiet strength” Suzanna discovered Tribe Sober via this podcast As a result of the podcast she emailed me for the pdf of our Annual Tracker – if you'd like an Annual Tracker just email membership@tribesober.com and Sue will send you one Over the last year Suzanna's been throwing the book at her sobriety – she's been to our Zoom Cafes and participated in the chatrooms – she's still reading the Quitlit and like me she's a great fan of Kristi Coulter I'm going to put a link to Kristi Coulters brilliant essay called Enjoli in the shownotes – it's a must read for anyone on this journey She also wrote her Goodbye to Alcohol letter which is on our website After a year of sobriety Suzanna is experiencing many benefits but she highlighted self respect, the joy of mornings and the connection with her children. Her advice to anyone considering this journey is to reach out to someone you trust and be accountable So many of us tried to achieve sobriety alone but as she said the trouble with that is that it's so easy to cave when its only you who knows you are trying to quit So if you're ready to be accountable then just go to tribesober.com and hit join our tribe Suzanna has now trained as a coach so if you'd like more info about that go to her Facebook page and send her a whatsapp or you can email her at coachingwithsuzanna@gmail.com More Info Subscription membership – you can join up HERE. Episode 425 – What Recovery Pathway is Right for Me? Today we have Doug. He is 59, from Buena Vista, CO and he took his last drink on July 28, 1982. Join Recovery Elevator in Atlanta over Memorial Day weekend for a fun conference style meet up at the Marriott in Alpharetta. This event is all about getting your connect on and it will be a fun time. Spouses or loved ones are encouraged to attend the Sunday night event and Silent Disco afterwards! [2:30] Thoughts from Paul: When building your recovery portfolio, a good goal is 50% external and 50% internal. At first, the internal work may be too big of an ask, but as your nervous system settles down, you want to aim for a balanced split. Here are some quick examples of what I mean when I say external vs internal: External: Driving to an AA meeting, or hopping on a Café RE zoom chat Phoning a sober friend Working with a sponsor Internal: Meditation Journaling Reading Quit-Lit When building out your recovery I recommend this 5-tiered approach: 1. Community – AA, SMART, Café RE, therapy, sober friends. Burn the Ships! 2. Action/Movement – Chemicals of wellbeing, endorphins, dopamine, and serotonin are released when we move. 3. Inner Peace – Meditation, breathwork, creative ventures, writing, time in nature. 4. Knowledge – Podcasts, Quit-Lit, learning about new things in and out of recovery. 5. Universe – This is not religion, but it is the spiritual component of recovery. Better Help: www.betterhelp.com/elevator - 10% off your first month. #sponsored [11:55] Paul introduces Doug: Doug had his last drink on July 28th, 1982, when he was 19 years old. He lives in Buena Vista, CO and is married and they have two adult children. He has worked in upholstery, cabinet building and installations, and has built some houses with his son. He enjoys the mountains, biking and riding his motorcycle. Doug grew up in a normal family and wasn't exposed to heavy drinking. His first experience with alcohol was when he was 4 years old when he remembers having a few sips of his mother's drink. He felt the warm glow and really liked it. Later when he was 12, a friend of his stole a bottle of liquor from his parents and while his friends were mixing it with soft drinks, Doug drank straight from the bottle. He felt something click – suddenly, he felt normal, and like everyone else. When Doug was 16 his mother passed away and the drinking escalated and continued to be excessive after graduation. Some friends invited him to Alateen meetings, and he started attending weekly. Once a month AA members would come in and share their stories. He started identifying with some of the stories which got him to start question his drinking. He realized that he was becoming less like the person that he wanted to be. When one of his former drinking friends disappeared from the meetings, he found out that they were working on sobriety with AA. That friend was a speaker at one of the meetings, and Doug noticed that they looked healthy and at peace. He chose to speak to him afterwards and expressed an interest in possibly attending AA but wasn't quite ready for it. Doug finally accepted the invitations to attend and was planning to go to a meeting on July 29th. The night before he found himself drinking and when he saw himself in a mirror started asking himself why he was drinking. He didn't have a good answer for that. AA has been a big tool for Doug, along with volunteer work. He knows that if he had continued drinking, he would not have had the life he has. He believes in counting blessings, finding things to be grateful for and putting sobriety before everything else. Cafe RE Use the promo code OPPORTUNITY to waive the set-up fee. Addictions case manager and former addict Jean-Paul (JP) Michael reached out to addiction psychiatrist Dr. Wiplove (Wip) Lamba this week, seeking info on CRAFT (Community Reinforcement, And Family Training). Seeing there was an audiobook, he started reading the version for family members. For substance use disorders care, we usually focus on the individual. The family is kept separate. Robert Meyers, a psychologist and scientist out of New Mexico developed the CRAFT model so that the family member can help the loved one get sober. There are three main goals to craft. 1. Help reduce your loved ones substance use 2. Help move them towards treatment 3. Improve your life whether or not someone stops using substances. People are sometimes so stuck waiting until “rock bottom” that they forget we can sometimes create an environment where it is easier for the person to move towards sobriety. Mark grew up in a household in which his father drank too much and his mother tried to control her husband's behaviour. Naturally, in this situation, conflict ensued. In an attempt to hold his family together in the face of the conflict, Mark often found himself acting as peacemaker and go-between. In this episode, Mark discusses how he found support, first in Alateen where other teenagers shared their experience, strength and hope in dealing with family situations that were similar to his, and then in Al-Anon, where he developed an approach to self-care which makes for a peaceful and fulfilling life today. What really goes on at an Al-Anon World Service Conference (WSC)? How is the WSC different than the WSO? What's it like for a Delegate to visit Stepping Stones, the house of Al-Anon's co-founder? Welcome to the very first "CAL Chat - Deep Dive" episode! This spin-off show is where we take a closer look at Al-Anon and Alateen Conference Approved Literature. This episode is in 6 parts and in Part 1, before we dive into the "1961 World Service Conference Summary" (P-46) - which was Al-Anon's first Conference - I introduce Evelyn, an Area Delegate, that has currently attended two Conferences. She compares the experience attending one virtually (in 2021) and in person (in 2022), and how she feels like a Millennial in a Senior's body. I share about my first interaction with the greater Al-Anon organization when I received a “cease and desist” letter. Episode #41: In this episode we'll explore the complicated and often misunderstood topic of Codependency vs. Interdependency. In codependent relationships, one person does much of the giving and at the same time tries to get their own needs met by controlling the other person. While some people will recreate these same codependent patterns in many of their relationships, others may find that they have just one difficult relationship, in which establishing and maintaining healthy boundaries is challenging. This situation often arises when we have a loved one with mental health problems, substance abuse problems, or their own unskillful ways of relating that pulls us into an anxious and imbalanced pattern of relating. Joining us for this conversation are Co-Dependents Anonymous (CoDA) member Jill and psychotherapist and recovery specialist Kat Zwick, LMFT. This conversation is not just for those who view themselves as having codependent tendencies, but for anyone who struggles with knowing what is and is not in their control. Most of us will likely encounter this challenge at some point, with some person—a child, an aging parent, a troubled friend or an intimate partner! If you are a parent, caregiver, or spouse to this person …. the odds are greater that you will wrestle with where to draw appropriate lines about who Is responsible for what. Join us as we talk about how to find greater personal well-being, even in those more challenging relationships. In Episode 13's part 8 of 11, Diane and I discuss the importance of libraries and how doing outreach is not a duty but a privilege. And she reminds me why I need to go back and listen to my own podcast! Click here for a video of the hardcover version of "How Al-Anon Works" (B-22) that was accepted into a local library. Also, at this podcast show's website, www.calchatpodcast.com, I've attached *bonus content* so you can see a screenshot image of the library's unique summary of the book and try to locate where they got the description from. Can you find it? Happy hunting!
I compare the audiobook of "How Al-Anon Works" (eA-22) to the print version (B-32) in Episode 13's part 9 of 11. A moving story about suicide, Chapter 27's "Finding Reasons To Live," is highlighted because of what it taught me about expectations when listening to the audiobook version. The show wraps with an update given on all Al-Anon audiobooks available. Lastly, for the 2009 World Service Conference Summary, click this link www.al-anon.org/pdf/P46_2009_web.pdf to check out page 14 that is mentioned in this show.
