Half of the world's population cannot enjoy the night sky due to light pollution. Fortunately, South Africa has a significant geographic advantage, allowing us to experience our stunning night skies. The country aims to leverage this with its substantial investment in the Square Kilometre Array (SKA), a multi-billion-dollar initiative to construct the world's largest telescope. In an interview with Biznews, Shamilla Chettiar, the Deputy Director-General of the South African Department of Tourism, said that R352 million will be allocated to the project in the Northern Cape to stimulate economic growth and combat unemployment. Dr. Chettiar said that Sutherland, home to the largest optical telescope in the Southern Hemisphere, has seen a surge in tourism, generating R50 million annually for the region. A Science Exploratorium will be established in Carnarvon, where the SKA is located, and the astro-tourism strategy will include the indigenous storytelling traditions of the San people

Gre za kozmološke percepcije in razumevanje nastanka vsega obstoječega, skupaj z vsemi bitji in zemljo, v snovnem, duhovnem in družbenem smislu. History Of Egypt, Chaldæa, Syria, Babylonia, and Assyria is the masterwork of one of the fathers of modern egyptology. This work, in twelve volumes, was translated from the French original, “Histoire ancienne des peuples de l'Orient classique” and published in 1903-1904. Maspero was a largely self-taught master of hieroglyphic translation. In November 1880, he was placed at the head of a French archeological mission, which developed later into the Institut Français d'Archéologie Orientale. Maspero then succeeded Mariette as director-general of excavations and of the antiquities of Egypt.“Aware that his reputation was then more as a linguist than an archaeologist, Maspero's first work in the post was to build on Mariette's achievements at Saqqara. He expanded their scope from the early Old Kingdom to the later, with particular interest in tombs with long and complete hieroglyphic inscriptions that could help illustrate the development of the Egyptian language. Selecting five later Old Kingdom tombs, he was successful in that aim, finding over 4000 lines of hieroglyphics which were then sketched and photographed.“As an aspect of his attempt to curtail the rampant illegal export of Egyptian antiquities by tourists, collectors and agents for the major European and American museums, Maspero arrested the Abd al-Russul brothers from the notorious treasure-hunting village of Gorna, who confessed under torture to having found the great cache of royal mummies at Deir el-Bahri in July 1881. The cache was moved to Cairo as soon as possible to keep it safe from robbers.“In 1886 he resumed work begun by Mariette to uncover the Sphinx, removing more than 65 feet of sand and seeking tombs below it (which he did not find, but have later been found but not opened).”Maspero went on to sponsor and expand the system of national museums and presided over the growing collection of the Bulak Museum. Maspero gave a 17 year old Howard Carter his first Egyptological job – and it was he who recommended Carter to Lord Carnarvon. Carter and Carnarvon would go on to discover the tomb of King Tutankhaman. In the first volume of this master work, Maspero tackles the importance of the Nile, the pantheon of Egyptian gods, and the legendary history of Egyptian gods. Embracing Challenges: David Skinner's Epic Solo Cycle Ride Across Wales Welcome to another episode of Monday Night Live (MNL)! We're thrilled to bring back David Skinner, a long-time friend of MNL who has shared his incredible adventures with us each year. This week, David takes us on an extraordinary solo cycle ride across the length of Wales. Introduction by Derek ArdenHello everybody, I'm Derek Arden, your host for Monday Night Live, where we share stories of extraordinary people who often stay under the radar. Tonight, we have David Skinner, an adventurer who has conquered mountains like Mont Blanc, the Matterhorn, and the Andes. Now, he has taken on a new challenge: cycling the length of Wales. I followed David on the Garmin app during his journey, and we'll delve into his motivations and experiences. Whether you're an adventurer or a fan of human determination, this episode will inspire and motivate you. Motivation Behind the RideDavid begins by sharing what inspired this challenge. It started with a Christmas gift from his wife: a guidebook for "Lôn Las Cymru," a remote cycle route from the southern to the northern tip of Wales. The idea of traversing such a varied and challenging landscape intrigued him. Despite the demanding nature of the ride, David saw it as a personal challenge worth undertaking. The RouteDavid's route included some of Wales' most stunning parts, such as the Brecon Beacons, the Cambrian Mountains, Cader Idris, and Snowdonia National Park. He shares breathtaking images of Snowdonia, highlighting the stark contrast between the lush, green landscapes and rugged mountain terrains. Day-by-Day Breakdown of the Journey Preparation and PlanningPreparation was key to David's success. He discusses the importance of health, fitness, motivation, nutrition, recovery, weather, mechanics, route finding, and safety. He emphasizes that meticulous planning and having contingencies in place were crucial for navigating the unpredictable Welsh weather and challenging terrain. Day 1: Cardiff to GlasburyDavid's adventure began in Cardiff, starting at the Cardiff Bay docks. The first day's journey followed the Taff Trail, taking him out of the city and into more remote areas. The transition from urban to rural was stark and exhilarating. He cycled 114 kilometers, climbing about 5,000 feet, and ended the day in Glasbury, near Hay-on-Wye, known for its second-hand bookshops. Day 2: Glasbury to LlanidloesThe second day was deceptively challenging. Despite being a shorter route, David felt the fatigue setting in. He crossed the River Severn at Builth Wells, cycled through lush landscapes near Rhayader, and ended the day in the charming town of Llanidloes. The cumulative effort of the previous day made this leg particularly tough. Day 3: Llanidloes to BarmouthDay three presented the most climbing, with David navigating the Hafren Forest and ascending to the high point near Cader Idris. The weather was unpredictable, with heavy showers giving way to sunshine, creating a surreal cycling experience. He navigated through the slate valleys and reached the historic Barmouth Bridge, ending his day in the coastal town of Barmouth. Day 4: Barmouth to HolyheadThe final day was the longest and featured the greatest ascent. David cycled along the coast, through Porthmadog, and up towards Carnarvon. The views of the Snowdon mountain range were breathtaking, but fatigue and soreness set in, making the final leg to Holyhead a true test of endurance. Despite the challenges, he reached his destination, feeling a profound sense of accomplishment. Reflections and Lessons LearnedBalancing Go-for-it and PlanningDavid reflects on the importance of balancing enthusiasm with meticulous planning. While a positive attitude and willingness to take risks are essential, having a well-thought-out plan can make all the difference. Value of ContingencyHaving contingency plans provided David with the confidence to commi...

'The doctors were telling me, "We're going to take your greater omentum out" … I had no idea what these terms meant.' In episode 96, author Tracy Sorensen joins us to discuss her remarkable novel/cancer memoir, The Vitals, narrated by her internal organs. After her original cancer diagnosis, a desire to better understand her body led Tracy to crochet her peritoneal organs. This in turn helped her to develop each organ's personality as they became point-of-view characters in the novel. She delves into her creative process, including the three-word sticky note that guided her writing. Part of her goal was a deliberate departure from conventional 'battle' narratives surrounding cancer, opting instead for a more nuanced approach that challenges societal expectations. She also shares her approach to crafting narrative drive. Tracy Sorensen is a writer and scholar. She grew up in Carnarvon on the north coast of Western Australia and now lives in Bathurst, New South Wales, with her partner, Steve. Her first novel, The Lucky Galah, was longlisted for the Miles Franklin Literary Award in 2019. The Vitals, her second novel, is based on her experience with advanced primary peritoneal cancer, a form of ovarian cancer. When we left him at the end of Part 1, Carter had just made the acquaintance of the Earl of Carnarvon: a fateful meeting that was to lead to one of the most astonishing archaeological discoveries of the 20th century. In Part 2, we hear about the unearthing of the final great tomb of the Valley of the Kings, drink a future explorer's drink, and discuss the question of the curse of the pharaohs.

4/4. Dan descends the very same stone steps into Tutankhamun's tomb that Carter did, 100 years earlier. From within the chamber, Dan and Egyptologist Alia Ismail give a sense of the awe Carter and Carnarvon would have felt, of the riches and sarcophagi that housed the mummy of Tutankhamun. Meanwhile, Dr Campbell Price gets into the obsession the discovery sparked- ‘tut-mania'- as the public bought all the rolls of film in Luxor and slept on camp-beds in the grounds of the winter Palace hotel, desperate to catch a glimpse of the treasures emerging from the tomb. From the bustling Luxor souk, Dan reflects on why exactly the boy pharaoh captured the world's imagination and still does to this day.Listen to episode one - Tutankhamun: The Valley of the Kings.Listen to episode two - Tutankhamun: The Discovery of a Lifetime.Listen to episode three - Tutankhamun: The Life of a Boy Pharaoh. This podcast was written and produced by Mariana Des Forges and mixed by Dougal PatmoreIf you'd like to learn more, we have hundreds of history documentaries, ad-free podcasts and audiobooks at History Hit - subscribe to History Hit today! To download the History Hit app please go to the Android or Apple store. In 1922, the tomb of the young king Tutankhamun was uncovered by Archaeologist Howard Carter, led by his patron George Herbert (5th Earl of Carnarvon), opening up widespread interest into Ancient Egypt civilization. Since then, he has long been suspected of stealing it's treasures before the tomb was officially opened. These claims have been hard to validify, but a newly discovered letter penned by renowned philologist Sir Alan Gardiner may hold the answer to the questions that have swelled up in the 100 years since the discovery of the tomb. Gardiner's letter was never published, but the letter details how Carter compensated his work translating the cave hieroglyphics with a ‘whm amulet', which was historically used as an offering for the dead. Despite being told by Carter that the amulet hadn't originated from the tomb, confirmation came from the then-director of the Egyptian Museum in Cairo Rex Engelbach after testing other finds transported to the museum. To understand more about the controversy and history surrounding the tomb of Tutankhamun, and the surrounding context, I reached out to University of Auckland Professor Anthony Spalinger to discuss the news and more.

Bestselling author Gill Paul returns with a brilliant novel about Lady Evelyn Herbert, the woman who took the very first step into the tomb of Pharaoh Tutankhamun, and who lived in the real Downton Abbey, Highclere Castle, and the long after-effects of the Curse of Pharaohs. Jenny: We're in our second episode of Encore, the new show for Binge Reading On Patreon supporters, talking to favorite authors, people who've already been on the podcast, about their latest release. And today we've got international best seller Gill Paul who's already been on the podcast twice before talking about her latest book, The Collector's Daughter, Gill Paul: The Collector's Daughter Gill's previous JOBR shows: Gill Paul's Famous Fabulous Lives, from November 2019: https://thejoysofbingereading.com/gill-paul-famous-fabulous-lives/ And: Love and Betrayal from September 2020: https://thejoysofbingereading.com/jackie-kennedy/ I love the way Gill makes historical events come alive in her fiction, and this book is no exception. The Collector's Daughter is a dual timeline novel moving between the 1920s and the 1970s telling the story of Lady Evelyn Herbert, the English aristocrat who was involved with the opening of Tutankhamun's tomb in the 1920s, and went on to live through the long-term after-effects of the supposed Curse of the Pharaohs She's also got the claim to fame of having grown up in the ‘real' Downton Abbey, Highclere Castle, where the popular TV series was filmed. Gill, It's great to have you with us again. Jenny: So welcome to the show Gill, and tell us about Pharaoh's tomb and Lady Eve part in it all. Gill: Thanks so much for inviting me on the journey. It's lovely to talk to you. Evelyn was there with her father, the Earl of Carnarvon and Howard Carter when the tomb was discovered and opened in 1922. And all the evidence is that they sneaked in by night without the Egyptian authorities watching over them Lady Eve first to enter tomb And the Eve was the first one to crawl in and she was a young lady from the English aristocracy. And I thought ‘Gosh', what would it have been like for her, I'd always been interested in Egyptian stories from school days, but it only really came home to me in 2011 when I visited Egypt. And I went to the Valley of the Kings. We went down that long corridor that Eve and her father and Howard Carter would have gone down in 1922 and saw where his tomb had been and then went up to Cairo and saw all the artefacts in the Egyptian museum. And that was staggering. I mean the enormous wealth of all the gold tombs and the funeral masks and the jewelry, and then little personal details like Tutankhamun's had sandals that pictures of Nubians on the soles, the Nubians were the enemies of the Egyptians so every time he walked, he was walking on his enemies. I loved all the little personal touches I saw in the tomb. That's what really brought it to life for me. Jenny: It's amazing. Now, one of the themes of the story is penetrates the whole story really is the long-term belief that there was some sort of curse involved in opening the tomb and Lady Evelyn did actually suffer quite a lot of personal misfortune in her life, including being involved in a massive car accident, which resulted in a series of small TIA's, as they're called and later more serious strokes. And part of the story is her as an older lady in the 1970s, when her memory is impaired with memory loss and things, that's an interesting part of it because quite a significant part of the story is told by this older character who's impaired. That was obviously something you deliberately chose to handle that way. Two photographs bookmarked life Gill: My inspiration for this novel when I decided to write about Lady Eve's part and this huge historical event or two photographs that kind of bookmarked her life. Lady Eve at tomb entrance with her father and Howard Carter

"All people who enter this tomb who will make evil against this tomb and destroy it, may the crocodile be against them in water, and snakes against them on land. May the hippopotamus be against them in water, the scorpion on land." Egyptian archaeologist, Egyptologist, and former Minister of State for Antiquities Affairs - Zahi Hawass reading the curse protecting the tombs of the builders of the pyramids of Giza. It's the 4th of November 1922, and a young boy carrying water was about to stumble on an innocent looking stone that turned out to be the top step of a entire flight of stairs which led to the tomb of the most famous Pharaoh of them all. Archaeologist Howard Carter had been in Egypt since around 1891, but it was his partnership with George Herbert, The 5th Earl of Carnarvon in 1907, that brought about the most success for both men. We are tenants for a lifetime and this castle is a wonderful lesson for us, because we are just here for a short lifetime, far shorter than the cedar trees or the oak trees. We're just trying not to muck it up! -Lady Fiona Carnarvon This week's story is steeped in history, including a certain castle named Highclere which you may have seen on the famous series, Downton Abbey. It is also a rare glimpse into the life of British royalty. Lady Fiona Carnarvon is the 8th Countess of Carnarvon and the accomplished author of many books including her latest: Seasons at Highclere. Originally built on this site 1200 years ago, the 5000 acre English estate includes ancient trees, an orangery, a working farm, horses and 7 dogs. Living here and preserving the history of the place is a passion and a calling for Lady Carnarvon and her husband, the Earl of Carnarvon who see themselves as stewards of the land. In this interview, she takes us through her early life, which was shaped for she and her sisters by the loss of their mother and father. Educated at St. Andrew's University, Lady Fiona Carnarvon has a degree in accounting. She takes us through meeting her husband, becoming a Countess and a stepmother, the birth of her son, Edward, and her philosophy around how to handle obstacles in life. In this episode Lady Fiona Carnarvon also tells the story about how she discovered a secret, handwritten recipe for gin which would become the award-winning Highclere Castle Gin, made from botanicals grown on the estate and distilled in England's oldest gin distillery.
