"Always Look on the Bright Side of Life," a tongue-in-cheek comedy song written by Monty Python member Eric Idle, first featured in the 1979 Python film Life of Brian and was a Top 10 hit in the Australian Music charts. It is a theme song for optimists. An optimist is a person who engages in positive thinking and looks on the bright side of life. An optimist is inclined to be hopeful and to expect good outcomes. Faith is described as the substance or assurance of things we hope for but have not yet received. In Silver Linings, Terry Lees explores the strong connection between optimism and faith. Terry concludes that by maintaining an optimistic outlook, rooted in unwavering faith and a conviction of our own abilities, we unlock the potential for achievement.

In a much-needed jolt to the season, Idle delivers his signature brilliance alongside recurring characters, lots of Jane Curtin, not one but TWO classic sketches, and singing dogs. With Saturday Night Live showcasing two English guests on the program (yes, evidently there's a difference from British), we welcome Pop Culture Five's Thomas Sena to OUR 5-Timers Club as he helps break down this amazing episode. Thomas tackles it all - from the comedic genius of Eric Idle and his analysis of what makes an effective cold open to his apparent dislike of dogs. Rowan Atkinson performed his Schoolmaster sketch in John Cleese's The Secret Policeman's Ball. UK TV credits include The Famous Five, The Flying Kiwi, The Optimist, The Worst of Hollywood, and a lot of script editing. On being hired by Columbia Pictures TV, Richard moved with his family to Los Angeles. His lyrics have been recorded by talents as diverse as Dom de Luise, Eric Idle, Vanessa Williams, and Plácido Domingo. He has written libretti for several new operas composed by Lee Holdridge (TV's Beauty and the Beast, et al.), produced by the LA Opera, as well as writing new English versions of German and Italian classics. His non-fiction books, Diary of a Mad Poker Player, and its sequel, Getting Lucky, chronicle his adventures in the poker boom of the 2000s. Laugh Tracks Legends of Comedy with Randy and Steve

This time out we have a real treat from across the pond. Neil Innes may not be the most recognizable name in comedy, but without him the Monty Python movies would be much the poorer (and we wouldn't have a Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band at all). Coming up as part of the British satire boom of the early 1960s, Neil was an artist and musician with a flair for the absurd. That certainly came to the fore in the Bonzos, where Neil often sang lead and wrote their biggest hit. He soon crossed paths with the Pythons who used his music in Monty Python and the Holy Grail (among others), and he later collaborated with Eric Idle on the faux-Beatles parody, The Rutles. An all-around good bloke, Neil remained a well-loved fixture in British comedy, including Bonzos and Rutles reunions, for the rest of his life. As always, find extra clips below and thanks for sharing our shows! Want more Neil? Neil was a key member of the dada-influenced rockers The Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band. He wrote and sang lead on their biggest hit -- I'm The Urban Spaceman. https://youtu.be/olGXtohOs7c?si=C-yLWjWHi27hxE_u Monty Python and the Holy Grail is beloved by fans and the clever tunes by Neil are part of the reason why. Here Neil foretells the fate of his boss, the very very brave Sir Robin. https://youtu.be/ACajzIlzvH0?si=ZdJZ8X2TpQzpP1M George Harrison was a great patron of the Pythons and was always ready to take a piss out of his old band. Dana and Tom with new guests Heather Stewart (@heatherjstewart) and Ryan Luis Rodriguez (One Track Mind podcast, Reels of Justice podcast) discuss the religious comedy, Life of Brian (1979): directed by Terry Jones, written by Monty Python, starring Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Michael Palin, Terry Gilliam, and Eric Idle.Plot Summary: Ah, splendid! Picture this, if you will: the bustling streets of ancient Judea, a land rife with political turmoil, religious fervor, and the occasional stoning. Into this chaos, on the very same night as a certain well-known savior, is born a rather unremarkable chap named Brian Cohen. Now, Brian, through no fault of his own, is continuously mistaken for the Messiah. This hapless fellow bumbles his way through a series of increasingly ludicrous adventures. From joining the People's Front of Judea (not to be confused with the Judean People's Front—splitters!) to unintentionally starting his own religious movement, Brian's life is a whirlwind of mistaken identity, misunderstandings, and the utterly absurd. As if that weren't enough, he's pursued by Roman centurions, swooned over by fanatical followers, and lectured by his domineering mother ("He's not the Messiah, he's a very naughty boy!"). All this, while Brian desperately tries to carve out a normal life in a world that seems determined to turn him into something he most definitely is not.So, in essence, dear friends, "Life of Brian" is a satirical romp through history, skewering sacred cows and poking fun at the foibles of humanity with the kind of irreverent wit and cheekiness that only Monty Python can deliver. Cathy Moriarty Live on Game Changers With Vicki Abelson Girl Crush! I've had one for years on Academy Award Nominee, Cathy Moriarty, now after spending a virtual hour with her, forgetaboutit! I always knew she was an incredible actress, whether making me laugh or cry, but, what an amazing woman… mother, daughter, loyal friend, and pet rescuer. We talked the Bronx, where we both come from, Alexanders, our mothers, gratefully still with us, Cathy's pre-Pesci discovery acting days… high school drama, plays, dinner theatre, no agent, no professional training, but grabbing stage time wherever she could, auditioning and then a bathing suit contest to win a coveted pair of shoes that would change her stars. The trifecta at 17, the beforementioned Pesci, DeNiro, and Scorcese––Raging Bull. Her first film which led to that Oscar nod, on-the-job master classes, and a friendship with her character's namesake that would last the rest of Vikki LaMotta's lifetime. Neighbors. Belushi's last film. Ackroyd's kindness. All Cathy learned about comedy from them. Soapdish, how she almost didn't get it, who almost did, one of Cathy's favorite films for so many reasons. A horrible car accident, getting back to work… Kindergarten Cop, Forget Paris, Casper, Speilberg, Eric Idle, Copland, Stallone, more DeNiro, Analyze That, and how easy they are together. Despite all the work, Cathy's so un-Hollywood. Unfazed by celebrity and stardom, she dreamt of being a great actress not a movie star. A mother, who loves to cook, and thanks to Marty's mother (Scorcese) she prides herself on making the best sauce and meatballs around, she's also a savvy businesswoman who's owned a few restaurants and very successful pizzerias. We're regulars at the Encino location. There was so much more to talk about than we had time for - there's a slice of pizza in our future… I have witnesses! What started out as respect, and adoration… I adore, more! Prepare to get a bit silly as we salute a Python -- Eric Idle! While best known for his stint in Monty Python's Flying Circus, Eric has carved out a fine solo career including creating a stellar Beatles parody (The Rutles), writing the Broadway version of Monty Python and the Holy Grail (Spamalot), penning books, and touring the world. Oh yeah, he also was the creative force behind Monty Python's Farewell Shows in 2014. Not bad work if you can get it! A Tony and Grammy award winner, Eric shows no signs of slowing down with a new book (Spamalot Diaries) on the way and an accompanying tour. See him while you can -- he's a Legend's Legend. As always, find extra clips below and thanks for sharing our shows! Want more Idle? One of Eric's best tunes came in Monty Python's Meaning of Life in which Eric explains the galaxy. https://youtu.be/EntOjHJvYtY?si=B0Gvvzcn3gZUSTYa After Python, Eric's first huge project was The Rutles -- a parody of The Beatles that managed to be affectionate and snarky, all at the same time. Plus, it's pretty darned musical as seen in "Ouch" in which Eric's "Dirk McQuickly" takes the lead. https://youtu.be/6VNDZKa3ewE?si=jbHjqubWDrvlyX90 Eric hasn't made too many movies outside of Python, but Nuns on the Run (with Robbie Coltrane) is a perfect fit. Here Eric and Robbie, bank robbers trying to pass as nuns, try to explain the Holy Trinity. https://youtu.be/LBYs__VRqBs?si=-IsRmxqZfmFw7Jqu Eric's song "Always Look on the Bright Side of Live" has become a staple at UK funerals but during this chat with Craig Ferguson, Eric pulls out a somewhat darker companion piece! https://youtu.be/AUhu1CVzYjk?si=lpCsPwZ5icOS0JI9
