Rerun. Rowan Atkinson headed up the cast and writing team, yet the first series of ‘The Black Adder' drew a decidedly mixed reaction from audiences and critics when it debuted on BBC TV on 15th June, 1983. Set in 1484, and filmed in castles across England, the series led some wags to quip that it ‘looks a million dollars, but cost a million quid'. It was only later, when Ben Elton joined Richard Curtis to write subsequent series, that its iconic comedy characters truly took shape. In this episode, Rebecca, Olly and Arion consider the role of Oxbridge privilege in the genesis of the series, ask whether it was ever really an ‘alternative comedy', and quote some funny lines at each other – because this is a discussion about Blackadder, after all… Further Reading: • The show's profile on the BBC Comedy site (2014): https://www.bbc.co.uk/comedy/theblackadder/ • ‘Blackadder at 35: why the writers completely reinvented him after one series' (The i, 2018): https://inews.co.uk/culture/television/blackadder-reinvented-after-one-series-164228 • CLIP: ‘The Blackadder is Born': https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Na4v8CeKnxM ‘Why am I hearing a rerun?' As the Prime Minister promises new targets to tackle the backlog, Chief Executive of Breast Cancer Now, Baroness Delyth Morgan explains what this means for breast cancer patients. Episode Description: On this week's episode of The Invisible Gift, Andrew meets award winning producer and BBC's Head of Talent for Comedy - Carrie Britton. On the show, Andrew and Carrie delve into the question of self declaring as neuro-diverse in the workplace, Andrew and Carrie discuss the ineffectiveness of the education system for dyslexics, and Carrie illuminates for Andrew why the unique architecture of her brain has aided her in the art of storytelling. Top Quotes: "Difference is at a premium now." - Carrie Britton "Because there is a lack of neuro-diversity in parliament they don't prioritise issues relating to it. That's the very essence and purpose behind having diversity in all forms in every organisation." - Andrew "If you don't stand up for who you are and what you believe in then nothing is going to change. The more people embrace themselves the more rich, diverse, and aware society becomes." - Carrie "Part of the problem with being neuro-diverse is thinking you're alone. And we're not." - Andrew About the Host: The Invisible Gift is hosted by entrepreneur and dyslexic, Andrew Kitley. With twenty years experience, Andrew Kitley has worked his way up the metaphorical and literal ladder to become Managing Director of Kitall: an engineering firm. Under Andrew's guidance, Kitall is now one of the most sought after names to complete complex engineering projects in the UK. In each episode of The Invisible Gift, Andrew seeks the advice and inspiration of a fellow trailblazer who has defied the odds to achieve the extraordinary - turning the challenge of dyslexia into a gift. About the Guest: Carrie Britton is an award winning producer and director, whose credits include ‘Embarrassing Bodies' and Who Do You Think You Are' and is the current Scripted Talent Executive for Drama and Comedy at the BBC. Carries has also directed a number of films including the documentary series ‘Cutting Edge', BBC's ‘Modern Times' and ‘Inside Story'. She's worked for BBC Comedy, BBC Factual, Cineflix, Nutopia, IWC Media Hat Trick and other leading Indies. She's a member of the Royal Television Society's Futures Committee producing regular industry events, and of the Edinburgh Television Festival Talent Committee. She sits on the Advisory Board of the London Film Academy. Oh hi there!Last time I saw yo, living in fear of contracting a debilitating virus was the stuff of nightmares and now look at us! Good times guys, amirrrrriiight? After a long pandemic induced break, I am so glad to start this new series with the brilliant talent that is Nathan Foad.Nathan is a writer, comedian, performer, expert present wrapper and definitely not a hockey player. Nathan's star is rising which of course, I am 80% happy for, 20% full of loathing for. Before the first lockdown Nathan executive produced a Channel 4 taster pilot for his original sitcom ‘Newark, Newark' named after his home town Newark on Trent. But the success and achievement does not stop there which leaves me fuming. He has written for the BBC3/RTE production The Young Offenders, The Great British Bake Off: An Extra Slice for Channel 4 as well as being under commission from BBC Comedy and Comedy Central. If you haven't see his brilliant online series Comedians in Quarantine, just click here baybuh. And if you're looking for even more hilarity from Nathan, read his essays on his website and make sure you you follow him on Twitter and Instagram. Reader, je love him - he is a joy. NOW WITH ALL THAT SAID, if you want to support the podcast which I'm sure between 1 and 3 of you do, then please sign up to my Patreon here For just over €3 a month I record two audio diaries and various other little bits. Recording an audio diary this year has been particularly brilliant seeing as we've all been trapped in our homes and I've done sh*t all,but we have a laugh mates. You can also show your support for free by clicking five stars in iTunes and leaving a short review, something casual along this line of ‘I AM SIGNING THE DEEDS OF MY HOUSE OVER TO ESTHER AS THIS IS THE FINEST PIECE OF AUDIO I HAVE EVER HEARD. WHAT A TALENT.' I don't want to put words in your mouth but something like that would be more than adequate. Follow me on Insta here too while you're at it.Until next Tuesday my little fruit of the looms!Peace and love, EO'MD.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/the-80-with-esther-omoore-donohoe. BBC Academy director Joe Godwin spoke to comedian Janice Connolly and BBC Comedy executive Rebecca Papworth about taking unconventional Birmingham housewife Barbara Nice from a stand-up act to a rounded radio sitcom character. Janice developed her Barbara Nice character in the late 1990's and it led to her being spotted by Peter Kay. “As an artist it's important you have a relationship where you think you're being talked to properly - the person you're working with gets you artistically but is also very honest with you.” – Janice Connolly In this podcast, you will learn how to: - go from stand-up to sitcom - become comfortable with radio technology - develop a character - build the relationship between performer and producer Janice has a string of credits as a musician, actress, comedian and artistic director.
