Hey everyone, I'm the producer of The 80,000 Hours Podcast, and a few years ago I interviewed AJ Jacobs on his writing, and experiments, and EA. And I said that my guess was that the best approach to making a high-impact TV show was something like: You make Mad Men — same level of writing, directing, and acting — but instead of Madison Avenue in the 1950-70s, it's an Open Phil-like org. So during COVID I wrote a pilot and series outline for a show called Bequest, and I ended up with something like that (in that the characters start an Open Phil-like org by the middle of the season, in a world where EA doesn't exist yet), combined with something like: Breaking Bad, but instead of raising money for his family, Walter White is earning to give. (That's not especially close to the story, and not claiming it's [...] --- First published: November 21st, 2024 Source: https://forum.effectivealtruism.org/posts/HjKpghhowBRLat4Hq/bequest-an-ea-ish-tv-show-that-didn-t-make-it --- Narrated by TYPE III AUDIO.
"I think stories are the way we shift the Overton window — so widen the range of things that are acceptable for policy and palatable to the public. Almost by definition, a lot of things that are going to be really important and shape the future are not in the Overton window, because they sound weird and off-putting and very futuristic. But I think stories are the best way to bring them in." — Elizabeth CoxIn today's episode, Keiran Harris speaks with Elizabeth Cox — founder of the independent production company Should We Studio — about the case that storytelling can improve the world.Links to learn more, highlights, and full transcript. They cover:How TV shows and movies compare to novels, short stories, and creative nonfiction if you're trying to do good. The existing empirical evidence for the impact of storytelling.Their competing takes on the merits of thinking carefully about target audiences.Whether stories can really change minds on deeply entrenched issues, or whether writers need to have more modest goals.Whether humans will stay relevant as creative writers with the rise of powerful AI models.Whether you can do more good with an overtly educational show vs other approaches.Elizabeth's experience with making her new five-part animated show Ada — including why she chose the topics of civilisational collapse, kidney donations, artificial wombs, AI, and gene drives. The pros and cons of animation as a medium.Career advice for creative writers.Keiran's idea for a longtermist Christmas movie. And plenty more.Material you might want to check out before listening:The trailer for Elizabeth's new animated series Ada — the full series will be available on TED-Ed's YouTube channel in early January 2025Keiran's pilot script and a 10-episode outline for his show Bequest, and his post about the show on the Effective Altruism ForumChapters:Cold open (00:00:00)Luisa's intro (00:01:04)The interview begins (00:02:52)Is storytelling really a high-impact career option? A new mishnah! On how a healthy person can transfer property to others -- to go into effect after that person's death: the phrasing of "from now until after death." But what happens to that property during the lifetime? Neither father nor son can sell those properties during the father's lifetime. And if the son did sell, the buyer does not have the right until father's death. But does the father need to say, " from now" to begin with? The Gemara suggests that the date alone should be enough. Also, the case of all of the above, but where the son dies in his father's lifetime -- what happens if the son has sold the property before he died? Does the sale take effect (say, after the father's death? Or not at all? It's a dispute between R. Yochanan and Resh Lakish.

What's this? Two review episodes in one month? That's right! There are so many adventure games we want to talk about that we have added another episode where we review the latest adventure games we have been playing. And what adventure games they are! We go back in time as we review two retro adventure games. Firstly Matt. Johnny and Laura discuss the text parser mystery game from Julia Minamata, The Crimson Diamond. Inspired by The Colonel's Bequest, we discuss if this game stands on its own. Then we also review survival horror game in exploration mode, Crow Country. Also heavily inspired by survival horror adventure games of the 90's but Seoirse reviews the no combat exploration mode so he discusses whether he believes if this game can, uh, survive without combat. Not to be outdone thank goodness Laura is here to review Thank Goodness You're Here as she talks about this comedic adventure game set in Yorkshire. And finally Johnny reviews two new games. Firstly he talks about devil's Hideout, the third adventure game released by Cosmic Void this year! And finally he reviews Thalassa: Edge of the Abyss, a new detective game set under the ocean. All that and much more!PreviewsCressup Gamescom Roundup Part OneCressup Gamescom Roundup Part TwoGames ReviewedDevil's Hideout Steam PageCrow Country Official SiteThank Goodness You're Here Official SiteThalassa: Edge of the AbyssThe Crimson Diamond Official SiteIf you would like to stay up to date make sure you subscribe to the podcast. This show is part interview/part philosophical discussion that focuses on the work and legacy of Nurse Catherine Pine (1864-1941). Joining us is Elizabeth Crawford, an authority on the British Suffrage Movement, who has written on Pine as well as earlier suffragists such as Milicent Fawcett (1847-1929) both in books and in Crawford's blog “Woman and Her Sphere.” Crawford explains the research process by which she discovered that Pine's Last Will and Testament contained a bequest of several suffragette treasures: books, photographs and a “suffragette medal””. We discuss the suffragette movement of which Nurse Pine was a part; and how Elizabeth Crawford's research uncovered a mystery that has both philosophical and legal dimensions.

In today's episode, we discuss vocational virtues⸺scientific principles that should guide the behavior of scientists. We discuss whether we agree with values put forth by numerous scientists, including Ivan Pavlov, Peter Medawar, Santiago Ramón y Cajal, Barry Schwartz, among others, and share our own. Discover why you may inherit less money than you think. The Fed did a study of inheritances, but talking about the average inheritance isn't very accurate. Here's why. The article is here. Are you investing well for financial freedom...or not? Financial freedom is a combination of money, compounding and time (my McT Formula). How well you invest, makes a huge difference to your financial future and lifestyle. If you only knew where to invest for the long-term, what a difference it would make, because the difference between investing $100k and earning 2% or 10% on your money over 30 years, is the difference between it growing to $181,136 or $1,744,940, an increase of over $1.5 million dollars. Your compounding rate, and how well you invest, matters! Taxes are a big issue for any investor. For people likely to incur federal estate tax, does it make sense to give away assets to family members sooner rather than later? The answer to that question can be fraught with all kinds of psychological and emotional issues. But it's important to contemplate the details of different lifetime gifting strategies if you want to maximize what you leave for your heirs. To understand more, Mark Riepe speaks with Susan Bober, a director in Schwab's Wealth Strategies Group in Indianapolis. Mark and Susan discuss why the idea of giving money to family members can cause so much fear and anxiety, the annual exclusion gifting strategy, and the importance of finding an advisor you trust.Follow Financial Decoder for free on Apple Podcasts or wherever you listen.Financial Decoder is an original podcast from Charles Schwab.
