This week Jun and Daniel have another guest interview with their friend and former co-worker, Alex, who is a frequent visitor to Korea. This time, Alex is visiting Korea to celebrate his daughter's first birthday. What is something that the cities of Ilsan and Bundang share? What was the first food Alex and his wife sought out upon landing? What are some ways that Koreans are innovative, food-wise? What are some things Alex thought was Korean growing up, but is actually Japanese? What does Alex look forward to while he is in Korea? Why are Koreans hesitant to help strangers in public? What is a fear that Alex has as a visitor, that seems to be more commonly held by Korean Americans than Korean Koreans? Do Koreans have a plan in case of an emergency attack from the North? Where has Korea tried to relocate their capital city to, and why? What are some uncomfortable questions one should be prepared to have when meeting with extended family in Korea? What's one bit of Korean culture Alex would export to America if he could? What stops him from moving to Korea permanently? How can Koreans tell Korean Americans apart from Korean Koreans? If you're interested in any of these questions, tune in to hear Daniel, Jun, and Alex discuss all this and more!Support the Show.As a reminder, we record one episode a week in-person from Seoul, South Korea. The COVID-19 pandemic has led to a surge of violence and hate against Asians, Asian Americans, and Pacific Islanders. Even so, anti-Asian racism remains largely invisible in academic, religious, and public spaces. On November 18, 2022, panelists at the SBL/AAR Annual Meeting in Denver, CO examined the complex ways feminist studies in religion are entangled with this problem and must decolonize in order to be effective in anti-racist work. Panelists also explored the ways Asian and AAPI feminist scholars of religion contend with race and racism in their scholarship. This panel session is a part of the ongoing anti-racism initiative of Feminist Studies in Religion, Inc., the organization of scholars that publishes the Journal of Feminist Studies in Religion. Presided by Grace Ji-Sun Kim, other panelists include Rachel A. R. Bundang, Tamara C. Ho, Vijaya Nagarajan, and Najeeba Syeed-Miller.

Preaching for the Thirty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time, Dr. Rachel Bundang offers a reflection on belonging: "Jesus recognizes that Zacchaeus is also kin-- "son of Abraham"-- and wants to belong-- "for the Son of Man has come to seek and to save what was lost." Isn't that desire for kinship and belonging also our own? Let's take a step back to recognize when and how the desire surfaces for us. Let us also follow Jesus' lead to extend that invitation to someone else: offer an opening to someone looking for a place to land, to call home, to be loved unconditionally." Dr. Rachel Bundang is a Catholic feminist ethicist. Presently based in the Bay Area, she teaches on the Religious Studies faculty at Sacred Heart Preparatory in Atherton and the Graduate Program for Pastoral Ministries faculty at Santa Clara University. She has written multiple articles and book chapters and until recently served on the editorial team for the journal Theological Studies. A founding member of the Asian Pacific American Religious Research Initiative (APARRI), her areas of interest lie at the intersections of race, feminisms, technology, inequality, and Catholic social teaching. As a liturgist, she preaches and leads music regularly at her home parish in the Bay Area and also offers retreats and workshops nationally. In response to the current predicament we're all in worldwide, April is hereby officially dubbed "Stay the F*ck Inside" month at Catching Up On Cinema. Being as we're all doing our best to stay indoors these days, this month's programming will revolve around the theme of isolation, both thematically and in terms of filmmaking and premise. Our first pick this month is Kim Sung-su's South Korean blockbuster, Flu (2013)! Taking place in the city of Bundang during a martial law enforced lockdown brought on by a deadly flu outbreak, the film impresses with it's imagery and brutality, but is often confusing in tone.

[11:34] Steven Bammel: What's "tancheon in Bundang"? [11:37] DolsotDan: The Tancheon is the large stream that runs through Bundang and Seongnam and joins the Han at Olympic Stadium [11:39] Scott: agree with Josh completely [11:39] Scott: lol [11:39] DolsotDan: HOw about the black leather jacket 2MB sported after the Yeongpyeong incident [11:40] Jeff: http://www.upi.com/Odd_News/2011/07/19/Tae-Bo-blamed-for-building-shake/UPI-51641311101106/ [11:42] Scott: Psychoacoustics 101 [11:43] DolsotDan: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sam****g_Department_Store_collapse [11:44] DolsotDan: This terrible disaster springs to mind instantly [11:44] Scott: The contractors took bribes, and contruction was substandard [11:45] Scott: I think that there is a lot more transparency today, due to those incidents [11:46] Joshua Davies: definitely [11:48] Scott: don't worry about giving on air credit for my comments from the peanut gallery, Josh, I'm just trying to particiapte as much as possible [11:49] Scott: which means, when you hurry to do something, it usually gets done wrong the first time [11:50] DolsotDan: I'm not sure about bbali bbali, but definitely last minute last minute [11:50] Scott: or having to redo things 3 or 4 times [11:51] Scott: let's not talk about the re-calls then [11:53] Scott: it also has to do with the fact the customer support is MUCH stronger in foreign markets, than the local doemstic market, and that is why Koreans are usually complaining about Hyundai [11:53] Steven Bammel: I think the Genesis importing was mainly due to the price difference. [11:54] Jeff: http://www.recentpoker.com/news/hyundai-gamblers-2351.html [11:55] Scott: can't be as bad as http://www.foxnews.com/us/2011/07/14/chrysler-workers-in-michigan-reportedly-caught-smoking-drinking-during-lunch/ [11:58] Jeff : http://joongangdaily.joins.com/article/view.asp?aid=2939559 [11:59] Scott: equal opportunity vilification of auto workers  http://www.facebook.com/l.php?u=http%3A%2F%2Fmashable.com%2F2011%2F07%2F29%2Finternet-explorer-iq%2F&h=kAQCEfUlk [12:08] Scott: that has to be prety skewed data, just based on the fact the more people use IE than any other browser [12:08] DolsotDan: highest IQ - opera? [12:09] Scott: Don't tell KEB that Josh [12:10] Jeff : http://nielsfootman.com/korea-campaign-against-ie6-portals-ending-support-january/ [12:11] Jeff : http://joongangdaily.joins.com/article/view.asp?aid=2939313 [12:15] Scott: Unbelievable! [12:19] DolsotDan: There hasn't been a decent Korean cooking show up to now - Kimchi Chronicles [12:20] DolsotDan: The celebrity chefs need to be on board, not just government messages [12:21] Jeff : http://www.crazykoreancooking.blogspot.com/ [12:23] DolsotDan: interesting show guys - just picked it up off the Korea Business Central Tweets [12:24] Steven Bammel: nice job guys!
