Hello to you listening in Toronto, Ontario, CanadaLand!Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Wednesdays on Whidbey and your host, Diane Wyzga. My morning “rise & shine” routine is not complete without a page from the book, Pluto Living - Welcome to the Plutoverse by Pluto (& Mom a.k.a. NJ Wight, renowned wildlife photographer). You might remember the smart and sassy older lady Canadian Miniature Schnauzer who launched her very own Pluto Living YouTube channel on March 17, 2020 where she dispensed wisdom, laughter, history lessons, and tips on how to live better with less during the COVID. Pluto is now Angel Pluto but thanks to the InterWeb you can catch up with Pluto Living videos, playlists and shorts. Click HERE to access the YouTube channel  Click HERE to access the Pluto Living home pageFinally, Pluto's message that kick-started my day: “The stay-homes are making Mom's nerves jump around like a kangaroo convention! Everyone, you have to try to find a little spot of normal in these strange times. And maybe have a cookie? So-so-so, try to make your world just a little bit quieter for yourself in some small way. Maybe you could also do some little thing to make someone else's world feel a little bit softer. We have to rise up and be kind.”  Question: How are you rising up to be kind? Share the good word!  And thank you for listening. You're always welcome: "Come for the stories - Stay for the magic!" 1116. This week, we clarify the origins of the word "Schnauzer" and why it may mean "snout," "growler," or "mustache." Then, in honor of Talk Like a Pirate Day, we look at the true origins of the word "scallywag," which, believe it or not, isn't from pirates but may be related to Shetland ponies. Then, we look at why we use both "used to" and "use to" and how they differ in questions and negatives. The "used to" segment was written by Natalie Schilling, a professor emerita of linguistics at Georgetown University in Washington, DC, and who runs a forensic linguistics consulting firm. Black Russian Terrier: "The Black Pearl of Russia" [caption id="attachment_13770" align="alignright" width="354"] Emily Fagan showing one of her Black Russian Terriers.[/caption] Host Laura Reeves is joined by Emily Fagan, breeder of Black Russian Terriers, for a Love the Breeds episode talking about the “big black fluffy bearded beasts” that have become her “spirit animal.” “Like they are the Black Pearl of Russia and they really are like the hidden gem. Most people, they see them and they're like, ohh, boy, that's kind of this big black scary kind of looking dog. And they're so stoic and regal in public and then they come home and they're absolute goofballs, complete clowns,” Fagan said. “A short background history that Stalin basically was jealous of the Germans, you know, and their wonderful police military dogs. So he's like, you know what, I'm gonna make a superior breed of dog for military and police work. He got a bunch of scientists, geneticists together and actually started developing the Black Russian Terrier. The four main contributors are the Rottweiler, the giant Schnauzer, the Newfoundland and the Airedale Terrier. So there's the terrier. But they are very much NOT a terrier.” [caption id="attachment_13768" align="alignleft" width="389"] Black Russian Terrier training for "bite work" competition.[/caption] The breed was utilized by the KGB, and still is today by its successor agency, the FSB, as well as being used in the Russian prison system. It's job, Fagan said, was to terrify people. And they're very good at their job. The best owners of BRTs are not first-time dog owners, Fagan said. She added that structure and very defined rules are critical. “You do need to be fair because they are very smart,” Fagan noted. “This is not an old school, put the dog on its back. You can't do that. Absolutely not. You would ruin your relationship with this breed because it's built on trust too. You have to build respect. So a person who understands a structured environment is really going to thrive.”

In episode 264 of The Just Checking In Podcast we checked in with David Leck. David Leck is a communications professional, writer, editor, copywriter and the business owner and Managing Director of David Leck Associates. Our Founder Freddie met David whilst he was working in the BBC Press Office from 2019-2020. David's career in the BBC started when he was a young man and he worked in various departments before ending up in the HR department. As has been the case throughout BBC history, a restructure was then due to take place and his role was going to be impacted by it. His boss told him there was a six-month role going in the BBC Press Office, he applied and got in. He did that role for three years before leaving the Beeb to take up a Head of Marketing role at a theatre in Kent which he did for five years. Getting tired of theatre marketing life, he left there and went to a PR agency but had a terrible experience there and he decided to become self-employed and start his own PR consultancy business. He then got a short-term, part-time contract with the BBC World Service which allowed him to balance his new communications business and a regular paycheque. Still retaining some BBC contacts, he was asked back to do a few shifts in the BBC Press Office and some 20 years later, he was still there helping out, until he finally called it a day in April 2024. In recent years David has started doing some amazing volunteer work for a suicide bereavement charity called Survivors of Bereavement by Suicide (SOBS). He did this because he lost a close friend called Derek, who tragically took his own life on 6th May 2021. David had known Derek for around 7/8 years but he did not know the extent of Derek's mental health challenges so his death by suicide was a huge shock for him and provoked many ‘what if' type questions. In this episode we chart his various and illustrious professional journey, a peek behind the curtains of the BBC Press Office, his love of the art of writing and some of his favourite projects he's done through David Leck Associates. We then discuss his experience of anxiety and depression, Derek's life, and death and the devastation of suicide loss on the loved ones of that person. We finish by discussing his mentoring role to many BBC press officers throughout the years, his love of martial arts as a positive tool to help his mental health, and his dog, a miniature Schnauzer called Dylan who has brought so much joy and companionship to his life.

The never-ending pressure to hold it all together and show the world a perfected version of yourself is just one of the deep struggles that comes with bulimia. In this episode, I have the pleasure of speaking with Sarah Lee, who shares her incredible journey of recovery and how she has transformed her past challenges into her purpose. Certified Eating Disorder Coach (CCIED) Sarah Lee has been in practice since 2016, possessing four professional coaching certifications. She helps many people yet specializes in female adolescents and believers of the Christian faith. Before entering the mental health field, Sarah held various leadership positions in the banking-corporate world for over eighteen years. Immediately after leaving banking, she began working alongside her love as CFO for his radio broadcasting company. She brings both her professional background and own lived recovery experience into her coaching practice. While in her twenties, Sarah secretly struggled with Bulimia for almost seven years but, on the outside, presented to all as a high-functioning and successful individual in most aspects of her life. However, the physical damage began to catch up with her, and after a major medical scare, she went straight into recovery and found her freedom from Bulimia in 2006. After her mother passed away at just 61 years old in 2013 due to a variety of diagnoses and complications believed to have stemmed from her life-long battle with food and weight, Sarah soon felt a calling to gain the education needed to help other girls and women break free from disordered eating and find peace. She is passionate about helping each of her clients and willingly jumps all-in to each of their journeys. As a result, most who work with Sarah will say she is so much more than just a coach. Personally, Sarah loves spending time with her family, specifically her love, Don, son, Bruce, daughter-in-law, Madi, grandson, Lazarus, and her very spoiled Schnauzer, Oreo! She would have many fur babies if she could, and she even wanted to be a veterinarian when she was little, but helping others conquer Bulimia and other eating disorders, is her chief priority, and that takes time. She loves experiencing the rustic serenity of nature yet also the elegance and pleasure of fine dining. Writing poetry also flows easily from her heart and mind. 00:33 Sarah's journey of living with and recovering from bulimia 07:25 Anxiety, shame, and the vicious cycle it traps you in 10:27 Exercise as a compensatory behavior 12:55 Secrecy and privacy, struggling in silence 20:07 The ongoing stigma around eating disorders 25:42 Role of the certified coach 27:52 Sense of worth and how it has transformed 33:04 Where can you get started and what questions to ask yourself 40:01 Recovery and being a mom 44:45 Conquering Bulimia Course Connect with Sarah: https://sarahleerecovery.com/ https://www.facebook.com/sarahleerecovery https://www.instagram.com/sarahslee_77/ Learn more about the online course at www.conqueringbulimia.com Take the pledge now at www.purgepledge.com Meet the Host: Dr. Kelly Kessler is a licensed physical therapist, transformation coach, host of the podcast Rewiring Health, the owner of Optimal You Health and Wellness, LLC and a mom of two boys. We love this conversation about a part of the industry few writers know about--script-to-book, or when a writer is hired to novelize a project originally designed for the screen. Both Bethany and Gigi have successful projects in this area--Bethany Baptiste is the author of Izzy Hawthorne: Destiny Awaits, a script-to-book project based on Disney's Buzz Lightyear movie, and Gigi Griffis is the author of The Empress, a script-to-book project based on Netflix's series of the same name. We talk about finding these opportunities, getting yourself ready to create an entire project in 30 days--and how you can start *now* if this is a goal for you. Plus, we cover other Intellectual Property (IP) project types, how to find an agent for this kind of work--and what they've learned along the way. Bethany Baptiste is a slightly responsible grown-up living Jacksonville, Florida in a little brick house with her fiancé, three chaotic evil dogs, and too many books. She holds two degrees in Early Childhood Education and taught for seven years. Now as an inclusion specialist, she advocates for preschoolers with special needs. When not prying a shoe from a Schnauzer's jaws, she writes about Black kids with big hearts and little morals. You can visit her at bethanybaptiste.com or @storysorcery on Twitter. Bethany is represented by John Cusick of Folio Literary Management. Gigi Griffis is a world-traveling entrepreneur and writer with a special love for inspiring stories, new places, and living in the moment. In May 2012, she sold her stuff and took to the road with a growing business and a pint-sized pooch. She has been traveling full-time since then and is the author of Italy: 100 Locals Tell You Where to Go, What to Eat, and How to Fit In, as well as three additional guidebooks for Paris, Prague, and Barcelona. Gigi and her work have been featured at The New York Times, Married With Luggage, Miss Minimalist, International Living, Transitions Abroad, Forbes, and more. And her new travel guides are already hitting top-100 and top-10 lists on sites like Amazon.com. Find her work and books at gigigriffis.com. Follow Gigi on Twitter @gigigriffis
