We're familiar with left-brain/right-brain functions & being left or right handed, but we also have a dominant eye, ear, and foot. The experiences and research from Dr. Carla Hannaford's book, The Dominance Factor, shed some surprising light (for us) on how our dominant sensory and motor functions may affect us under stress or new learning situations--which is pretty much the conditions our children are in all the time. This is just one more factor to consider for parents to "know their child."

Sharla Dance was finishing her degree in Music Education at Brigham Young University when she took a children's music class from Susan Kenney. The principles and methods used in that class changed the way she wanted to teach music. When her daughter was diagnosed with a brain tumor at age seven, Sharla delved into research about how the brain learns, Howard Gardner's theory of multiple intelligences, and the body's role in learning as taught by neurologist Carla Hannaford. Since then, some of her research and experience has centered around music in a group setting for special needs children. She also started applying her research to Primary music and has continued to learn and teach workshops, helping church music leaders learn principles and brain research that can make them more effective in teaching children. Sharla has taught piano and voice lessons, group preschool, and school age music classes in her studio, Dance Sing and Play, for twenty five years. She has served as ward or stake Primary music leader in over ten different wards and stakes, and as a youth choir specialist in her stake for twenty years. She has served several times as ward choir director and stake music chair, and is currently first counselor in her ward Relief Society. Sharla is the mother of five children and she and her husband live in Washington state where she is also a full-time caregiver for their daughter who had that brain tumor so many years ago. Highlights 04:00 Sharla is the Primary music leader. A Gospel Doctrine teacher for children through music. She shares her resources with other leaders. 06:10 Sharla shares her background and how she got into music. 10:00 Resources Sharla shares for Primary and why she got her website started 12:50 The overall breakdown of what you should do during music time is to teach three different songs with three different activities and bear your testimony in one or two sentences. 15:50 Each child should be actively involved with a specific song. Help the children use their senses to learn and practice the songs. 22:00 One thing that researchers have found that helps the frontal lobe develop is purposeful movement with a steady beat. 23:30 When children learn music with props, beats, and movements it creates an experience for them and brain hooks that help them remember that song. 24:20 Sharla believes that when we teach a child music with these different hooks that the song will come back to teach the child and to teach them doctrine when they really need it. 26:00 Drilling the words of a song and practicing them over and over is what we commonly see in Primary. However, Sharla teaches that we need to focus on the beat, rhythm, and the melody while singing the words. This is way easier for the brain to connect everything. 30:20 The process of audiation is singing a song in your head. It's the strongest way to remember a song. Leave out words and have the kids fill them in and sing it out loud. 31:00 Sharla explains why movement while singing and to a steady beat is so important and useful for children. It activates the whole body and turns it into a thinking machine. 34:00 Line upon line is a great way for the brain to learn, especially when we sing the whole song. 37:20 Parents have found that even the children that don't really participate in Primary are singing at home all the time. 40:00 Sharla does activities that can involve all the children and the songs that they are learning, especially because there is only twenty minutes to do it in. 41:30 Research shows that to keep the attention span of an adult active and attentive we need to change the pace every ten minutes. Children need a change of pace every six to seven minutes. 45:30 The teachers need to be involved in music time too. 46:40 Each child takes in information in a slightly different way and the brain craves variety. We need to teach in different ways to reach different children.

I have learned a tremendous amount about movement and learning and the way our brains work from Dr. Carla Hannaford. The first time she was on our podcast (Episode 29) we talked about her life-changing book Smart Moves: Why Learning is not All in Your Head.  In this episode we talk about another of her life-changing books called The Dominance Factor: How Knowing Your Dominant Eye, Ear, Brain, Hand & Foot Can Improve Your Learning. This book and our conversation in this episode are filled with important pieces of information for parents and for teachers that I'd NEVER heard of before.  We need to know our dominances beyond which hand we write with because our dominances affect every aspect of our learning and many aspects of our relationships. This will help your marriage, it will help your parenting, it will help your kids with their school work, it will help in your work place. Going through life without this information from Dr. Hannaford is a big disadvantage.  Your set of specific dominances gives you a dominance profile. There are 32 total. Our current educational system favors one of the 32 that accounts for just 15% of learners. If you have a child struggling with school, this is a must-listen to episode.  Learn your dominance profile. Learn why it matters. Learn why 75-80% of half your brain shuts down under stress or when learning new things. Learn how you can enhance your brain function over the course of your life. Learn why getting out in nature and unstructured play are a must during childhood and during adulthood. And SO much more!!  Dr. Hannaford's books are important reads for anyone who works with children. Today on Move Your Brain Move Your Body we welcome Dr. Carla Hannaford! Dr. Hannaford is a biologist, author, educator with more than forty years teaching experience. Dr. Hannaford is the author of Smart Moves - Why Learning is Not All In Your Head, The Dominance Factor, Awakening the Child Heart, Playing in the Unified field, Raising and Becoming Conscious, Creative Human Beings. Dr. Hannaford has worked with musicians, artists, health care professionals, social service agencies, atheletes & spiritual organizations She has keynoted for many conferences worldwide, and been quoted in well over 1,000 books and journal articles on the importance of movement, and music for brain development, life-long learning and health. How Dr. Carla Hannaford went down the road to becoming an expert on learning The importance of cross lateral integrative movement "Crossing the midline of the body, its what we do when we take a walk" Talking about memory & belief system "The more we move the more brilliant we are" Running as a high impact sport The vestibular system and learning The Dominance Factor Right Brain versus Left Brain "Dominance starts to develop 9 weeks in utero with the moro reflex" "What happens is our non dominant hemisphere will shut down by 75-85% (when under stress) We do not need the executive functioning that the frontal lobe does, we just need to survive." Smart Moves How Meghan and Aleena's dominance profiles interact and balance How Dr. Hannaford moves her brain and body Quotes from The Dominance Factor: "As you might imagine, eye dominance has important implications for reading. In normal eye teaming the dominant eye orchestrates the tracking of both eyes. The right eye naturally tracks from left to right while the left eye naturally tracks from right to left. Learners with a left eye dominant pattern will initially want to look at the right side of the page first and then move to the left, thus causing difficulties in reading languages that move from left to right, like English. Because the hand and eye are so intimately connected, letter reversals are not uncommon when left eye dominant children are first learning to read and write." Quotes from Smart Moves: "Thinking and learning are not all in our head. On the contrary, the body plays an integral part in all our intellectual processes from our earliest moments in utero right through to old age. It is our body's senses that feed the brain environmental information with which to form an understanding of the world and from which to draw when creating new possibilities." "Sensations received through our eyes, ears, nose, tongue, skin, proprioceptors, and other sensory receptors we are just beginning to understand, are the foundation of knowledge. The body is the medium of this learning as it gathers all the sensations that inform us about the world and about ourselves." "Movement and play profoundly improve—not only learning—but creativity, stress management and health." Dr. Carla Hannaford's Website

I’ve been privileged to spend over 40 class hours learning from some of the top developmental movement specialists in the country – with Stephanie Johnson of Baby Bare, and also in the Brain Gym program, featuring the work of Carla Hannaford and Paul and Gale Dennison. In addition, I’ve received amazing training over the past 27 years through Kindermusik International, the leading childhood learning program in the country.Summing it up in a five-minute podcast is challenging, but I really want you to know and appreciate the wonders of the enrichment you’re making possible for your child through the movement aspects of our class.  So today’s podcast is all about movement! Let’s go! Why do we move so much in Kindermusik? And why does my child want to move aaaallll the time??Great question! The fact is that from birth to around age 7, learning takes place through movement. Your child literally moves to learn! When the neuropathways for movement are fired, they activate and connect the WHOLE brain synergistically. Not to mention the endorphins and feelgood hormones that the brain releases when our bodies are in joyful movement. Also, when we are not only hearing something like high and low (auditory) and seeing it (through moving a scarf or other object), but we’re also experiencing it in our bodies? That is integrated, active learning at its very best. In addition to being actively engaged, these activities are emotionally rewarding, especially when a loving adult is joyfully participating with them. And when we’re actively and emotionally engaged? There’s no limit to what we can learn

Children's Eye Care and Remote Schoolwork (0:00:00) Many of our kids are glued to their computer screens for many hours as a result of remote learning. In fact, they're surpassing their screen time limits to the dismay of their parents. But there's a reason why screen time limits are a thing. Not only do they keep children off the internet for too long, they also help keep your eyes healthy. So, what can we do to keep our children's eyes safe as they occupy their online classrooms this semester? Joining us this morning is Dr. David Guyton, a professor of pediatric ophthalmology, here with us to discuss how to care for your child's eyes during remote learning.   The Power of a Pause (0:18:21) Since the March shutdowns, life has slowed down, and even stopped for each of us. Sometimes it feels like we're trapped in a moment in time as everything we looked forward to this year was cancelled or put on hold. While this hasn't been ideal, maybe this pause has given us something extremely valuable. So, what is the gift we can take away from this time? Our friends Kim Howie and Nancy Werteen from The Wisdom Coalition join us today to help us understand the power this pause has in in our lives.   The Science of Outdoor Play (0:34:36) Growing up, summertime was sacred. Every moment, from the time I left in the morning till I got home at night, was a treasure. However, it seems like the days once marked by countless hours of adult-free, outdoor play are steadily growing to be a thing of the past. More and more playtime seems to be relegated to the confines of the playroom, or worse, a phone screen. The consequences of this decrease in the amount of active, outdoor play could be significant. Here to discuss the importance of outdoor, active play and how it affects our brain development is biologist and outdoor advocate, Dr. Carla Hannaford.   The Legacy of Chadwick Boseman (0:52:46) We were heartbroken and shocked along with the rest of the world to hear about the passing of Chadwick Boseman late last month. Chadwick was best known for his role as T'Challa in Black Panther. After an unknown 4-year battle with colon cancer, Chadwick passed away on August, 28th. As we've been working to make peace with this loss, we wanted to take a moment today to reflect on his life, work and legacy. Here to share his thoughts with us is race and culture writer Tre Johnson.   Weekend Review (1:30:34) Richie talks us through what there is to do this weekend, from the newest shows coming to streaming services, to the New York Times Bestseller list, to what going on in your community.

Welcome to 'Mind In Movement Conversations'. Today I was exceptionally lucky to chat with Carla Hannaford Ph.D. Carla is a beautiful and kind human and it was my absolute pleasure to talk to her. Carla is a biologist, author and educator with over 40 years experience. I read her book 'Smart Moves: Why learning is not all in your head' recently and I loved it. Listen to Carla and I having a wide ranging chat about 'Stressed Out Survival Orientated Humans' and how sleep, movement and less time on screens can help us to feel significantly better, especially if you are in pain.
