The future of fitness may not belong to runners, cyclists or weightlifters alone. Instead, it belongs to people who can successfully combine all three. The Planet Fitness Hybrid Games are introducing South Africans to a training style that blends endurance, strength, functional movement and performance under pressure. It is a fitness approach designed to create more balanced, resilient and capable athletes while making exercise more engaging, measurable and rewarding. Joining Jacob Moshokoa is fitness presenter, wellness correspondent, endurance athlete and burnout and mental fitness coach Liezel van der Westhuizen. Together they explore the rise of hybrid fitness, why it has become a global phenomenon, and what listeners can learn from the Hybrid Games experience. From understanding the meaning of hybrid training to practical advice for getting started, this conversation highlights how building a stronger body and a stronger mind often go hand in hand. Whether you are new to exercise or looking for your next challenge, hybrid fitness could be the missing piece in your performance journey.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
This is my personal favorite topic, but probably your least favorite: strength training. Before you run away, hear me out! Because whether you’re bed-bound, housebound, or just convinced your body can’t handle it right now, this episode is for you. I’m breaking down exactly WHY resistance and strength training isn’t just helpful for vestibular disorders—it’s essential. You Have to Move Your Body to Manage Your Dizziness From the dizzy-anxious-dizzy cycle to blood sugar regulation to better sleep to reduced inflammation, strength training touches virtually every struggle vestibular warriors face. I’m not letting anyone off the hook, but I am meeting you exactly where you are. Starting with 3 minutes? That counts. Walking to the mailbox and back? That counts too. Because the goal here is progress, not perfection. And you know I have the science to back every single word of it! In this episode, we'll dig into: Why strength training is non-negotiable for vestibular disorder management How exercise helps break the dizzy-anxious-dizzy cycle “In the moment” vs. “hangover” dizziness and how to adjust your approach Why EDS, HSD, or MCAS makes building muscle even more critical The truth about the fear of getting “bulky” How to start exercising when you’re bedbound or couch-bound What physical activity guidelines actually say, and where most people fall short How functional movements like the deadlift directly support vestibular patients How Vestibular Group Fit makes strength and resistance training accessible Whether you start with 3 minutes or 30, the most important thing is that you start. Because your vestibular system, your mood, your balance, and your future self are all counting on it. In this episode, Dr. Eric chats with certified health coach and functional trainer Vilmos Bond to explore how exercise needs evolve—especially for women over 40 navigating perimenopause and menopause. Drawing from over a decade of experience, Vilmos shares how his approach to functional training goes beyond aesthetics, focusing instead on strength, mobility, and longevity. The conversation dives into common exercise mistakes, including sticking to repetitive routines, lifting too heavy too soon, and neglecting proper form. Vilmos explains how hormonal shifts impact recovery, cortisol levels, and energy, making it essential to adjust workout intensity and frequency. They also discuss the importance of resistance training for bone density, the pros and cons of high-intensity workouts, and how nutrition and meal timing play a role in overall performance and health. If you want a clearer, more balanced understanding of how to exercise smarter—not harder—during midlife, you'll get a lot out of this episode. Have you ever hesitated to get in the gym because you fear getting "muscle bound" or "losing flexibility and balance?" Respectfully, that a load of BS. Find out why in this episode. This episode explores the realities of functional training, debunking myths and highlighting effective strategies for longevity and everyday strength. "Functional Training" means a whole lot more than throwing things against the wall and trying to balance on a beam. For most people, the most practical application of trying to train for the long term is to gain muscle mass with machines or free weights. It is the best bang for your buck, but also actually INCREASES flexibility, agility, and balance as we age. Coaches Justin, Amanda, and Emily discuss how traditional notions of functional training often overpromise and underdeliver, emphasizing the importance of strength, proper movement patterns, and personalized training for all ages. Stop fearing weights or thinking this style doesn't apply to those seeking agility and longevity. Get in the gym. Give it a listen here or wherever you get your podcasts! Just look up Bacon, Bibles, and Barbells! Enjoy the episode!

DESCRIPTIONIn this episode of the Fit40 Podcast, I take you inside a real group coaching call where we break down some of the biggest fitness myths adults over 40 see on social media. We talk about whether “functional training,” supersets, rotational exercises, and fancy movements are actually necessary, or if simple strength training is still the best option for busy parents. I explain how the body really works after 40, why consistency matters more than complexity, and how warm-ups, mobility, and smart programming keep you strong, pain-free, and progressing long term. If you've ever wondered if you're training wrong because of something you saw on TikTok, this episode will clear things up.FIT40 LINKS✅ Feeling stiff, achy, or low on energy?
Clifton Harski is the COO of The PPSC, a veteran of group exercise and traveling seminar education, and a much-needed jester pushing back against an increasingly ultra-serious fitness media landscape. In this episode, Clifton joins Andrew Coates for a fun, thoughtful, and refreshingly honest deconstruction of functional training—how it earned its reputation, where it went off the rails, and what's still genuinely useful if we strip away the dogma.Rather than defending a single methodology, Clifton takes aim at all fitness tribes (including his own), poking holes in sacred cows while making a strong case for curiosity, humility, and cross-pollination between disciplines. In this episode, Clifton shares insight on:• How “functional training” became a punchline• A clearer, more practical definition of what functional training actually is• The good ideas that still exist within functional training• Whether kettlebells can be used effectively for hypertrophy• Why fitness tribalism holds everyone back• Where kettlebell culture gets stuffy (according to a kettlebell guy)• Powerlifting's strengths—and blind spots• CrossFit's rise, fall, evolution, and cultural impact• The appeal of hybrid training approaches• Where group fitness programming succeeds and fails• Pilates and yoga—what they do well and where they're misunderstood• Bodybuilding's relationship with “function”• Why no single modality deserves total loyalty• And why everyone—including Clifton—is fair gameInstagram: @cliftonharskiCHAPTERS01:08 The Evolution and Missteps of Functional Training02:00 The Role of Physical Therapy in Fitness04:02 Critiquing Functional Patterns05:39 Reframing Functional Training as Athleticism06:10 Sponsor Break – TrainHeroic07:29 Personal Training and Functional Training Revisited12:06 Fitness Industry Tribalism12:42 Kettlebell Training: The Good and the Bad18:13 Powerlifting: Strengths and Weaknesses22:30 CrossFit: Rise, Fall, and Impact27:53 CrossFit's Reputation and Evolution28:55 Criticisms of CrossFit Programming29:48 The Appeal of Hybrid Training31:25 CrossFit's Community and Influence32:32 Challenges in Group Fitness Programming33:37 The Role of Nutrition Tracking34:41 Pilates and Yoga: Benefits and Criticisms42:08 Bodybuilding and Functional Training43:29 The Value of Diverse Training Modalities45:04 Kettlebells and Hypertrophy50:28 Group Fitness: Pros and Cons53:52 Final Thoughts and TakeawaysSUPPORT THE SHOWIf this episode made you think—or laugh—you can help the show by:• Subscribing and checking out more episodes• Sharing it on social media (tag me — I'll respond)• Sending it to a coach or client who's stuck in one training “camp”FOLLOW ANDREW COATESInstagram: @andrewcoatesfitnesshttps://www.andrewcoatesfitness.comPARTNERS AND RESOURCESRP Strength App (use code COATESRP)https://www.rpstrength.com/coatesJust Bite Me Meals (use code ANDREWCOATESFITNESS for 10% off)https://justbitememeals.com/MacrosFirst – FREE Premium TrialDownload MacrosFirst → During setup, answer “How did you hear about us?”Type: ANDREWKNKG Bags (15% off)https://www.knkg.com/Andrew59676Versa Gripps (discount link)https://www.versagripps.com/andrewcoatesTRAINHEROIC – FREE 90-Day Trial (2 steps)Go to: https://www.trainheroic.com/liftfreeReply to the email you receive (or email trials@trainheroic.com) and let them know Andrew sent you
Functional training is redefining what it means to stay fit for life. Instead of chasing personal records in the gym, this approach focuses on the movements that matter most—squatting, lifting, balancing, and moving with control—to preserve independence and prevent injury. In this Move for Life episode of the Live Long Podcast, Peter Bowes is joined by trainers Nate Wilkins and Shebah Carfagna, co-founders of The Ageless Workout, to explore how functional fitness supports healthy aging and long-term vitality. They discuss how to tailor workouts to your lifestyle and age, set realistic baselines, and build habits that stand the test of time.More than a trend, functional training offers a cost-effective, evidence-based path to longevity—linking movement, nutrition, sleep, and social connection to a longer, healthier life. The ultimate goal: stay capable, strong, and independent for as long as possible, compressing decline into the shortest time. You should consult a doctor or qualified fitness professional before starting any new exercise program, especially if you have existing health conditions or limited mobility.-----This podcast is supported by affiliate arrangements with a select number of companies. This episode explores how physical and occupational therapists can integrate Parkinson's disease–specific functional training into everyday clinical practice. Host J.J. Mowder-Tinney is joined by Dr. Becky Farley, neuroscientist, physical therapist, and founder of Parkinson Wellness Recovery (PWR!), to discuss the science and art of applying exercise as medicine for people living with Parkinson's disease. Together, they break down the core motor control building blocks—such as antigravity extension, weight shifting, axial mobility, and transitions—and demonstrate how these fundamentals can be retrained and progressed to improve real-world function. Listeners will learn practical strategies to make exercise goal-directed, challenging, and fun, while also addressing cognitive and emotional barriers that often limit mobility. Through case examples and clinical pearls, this conversation highlights how to design interventions that feel more like sport than therapy, empowering patients to move with greater ease and confidence. We explored how Marcus shifted from elite CrossFit competition to founding Functional Bodybuilding, a method that puts longevity and mental clarity at the centre of fitness. Marcus opened up about burnout, fatherhood and the pressure to perform, and shared how he rebuilt a more sustainable relationship with training. NASM Master Instructor Roundtable: A Show for Personal Trainers
On this “Master Instructor Roundtable," co-hosts, and NASM Master Instructors, Wendy Batts, and Marty Miller, take a deep dive into the ever-evolving concept of functional training, a term often tossed around but rarely fully understood. Drawing from over two decades of industry experience, Wendy and Marty unravel the origins of functional training, tracing its roots back to physical therapy in the 1970s and '80s. They highlight how its true intent was to restore efficient, multi-joint movement patterns essential for everyday life—well beyond gym floor trends and Instagram-worthy workouts. The hosts discuss how functional training has been redefined and sometimes misused as fitness fads have come and gone. They emphasize the importance of quality movement, stability, and assessment-backed programming rather than simply chasing novelty with flashy tools and exercises. Both also break down the NASM OPT model, explaining how evidence-based assessments and targeted corrective strategies create purposeful, individualized progressions for every client—from elite athletes to older adults managing daily activities.Listeners will gain actionable advice on how to distinguish true function from mere fancy, why quality always trumps quantity, and how to align training with clients' personal goals and real-world needs. Whether you're a new trainer or a seasoned coach, this episode will help you clarify your understanding of functional training, reinforce the fundamentals of assessment-driven programming, and ultimately, train smarter for real-world results. Today's podcast features Matt Aldred. Matt is the head strength and conditioning coach for basketball at the University of Michigan. He has international expertise and a diverse background in sports he has worked with through his previous stops in NCAA strength and conditioning. In addition to his strength and conditioning experience, he is certified in fascial abrasion technique and Frederick stretch therapy, in addition to a sports massage background. Matt has also co-authored the Fascial Mechanics for Sport course alongside Danny Foley. In building a performance program, it must ultimately be centered around the needs of the athlete. Athletes need to be as ready as possible on game day. Some athletes need more mass and physical strength. Others need more conditioning and body composition management. Others need more fluid and adaptive movement capabilities. Many athletes enjoy and benefit from providing their input into the program. These facets of performance make athletic development more dynamic than just “get them strong and I did my job”. On today's podcast, Matt talks about many aspects of building an athlete-centered program, highlighting training the spectrum of muscular strength and tissue quality, over to dynamic, high-velocity training with a priority on athletic qualities. He also speaks on training variability (such as “every rep different”), multi-planar training, basketball game demands, athlete autonomy, wearable resistance training, and much more. This show puts many pieces into place of a comprehensive approach to athletic development, encompassing so many facets of improvement in the field. We have to replicate that in the weight room. We can't just be weight and warriors because we've all had that athlete that's super strong and looks amazing. And I'm looking at the opposition team in a warm up going, who is that!? And then they don't play." - Matt Aldred (00:13:50) "The longer I've done this, the more I really lean into an athlete's intuition." - Matt Aldred (00:20:40) "There are certain exercises like a chin-up we're probably going to want to go full range of motion. I want you to hold at the top with Tempo down. But if we're doing a horizontal row, man, I can be elbow wide. I can be really quick reps. I can hold at the top. I can do a split stance with an anchor on a Kaiser pull-down. We can make that horizontal roll whatever we want to do." - Matt Aldred (00:24:29) "I don't think that we put the athlete in the box like no man, like whatever you are, I'll program towards that." - Matt Aldred
