These guitars, known for their unique sound, have caught the attention of celebrated musicians such as Bob Dylan, Patti Smith, Jim Jarmisch, Jamie Hince, and Daniel Kessler, to name a few. During their visit, Rick Kelly and his apprentice, Cindy Hulej—who has since launched her own brand, Cindy Guitars—delve into the shop's history, their meticulous guitar-making process, and anecdotes about their custom instruments and notable clients. Guitar Makers Rick Kelly and Cindy Hulej with Producer Mike the Mic hang out and chat with guests in the legendary Greenwich Village shop Carmine Street Guitars.
The Bones of Old New York is a new podcast from Carmine Street Guitars, a guitar shop in New York's iconic Greenwich Village which opened in 1990. The podcast is hosted by Rick Kelly and Cindy Hulej, two world renowned luthiers who make guitars from repurposed wood found in historic New York City buildings. Rick Kelly has been making guitars for over 50 years and has made Instruments for some of the world's most legendary artists including Bob Dylan, Lou Reed, Motley Crue, Jim Jarmusch, Allen Woody and Lenny Kaye. Cindy started working for Rick 11 years ago as his apprentice and has quickly become one of the premier guitar builders in New York making instruments for artists like Jackson Smith, Michael Imperioli and Kurt Vile. In 2018 a documentary about the shop directed by Ron Mann (Altman, Tales of Rat Fink, Grass) premiered to critical acclaim bringing international attention to Rick and Cindy. This is when they met the producer of the Bones of Old New York, Mike Guggino, who was the sound mixer on the film. They began recording at the end of 2021 and continued sporadically throughout the last 2 years having various guests come by and talk about music, art, life, New York and of course, guitars. The idea behind the podcast is simple. The listener gets to hang out in the back of the shop with Rick, Cindy and Mike while they have conversations with artists and shop regulars. It's a window into a time when Greenwich Village was full of painters, musicians, beat poets, coffee shops and counterculture freak-niks. A place where many of today's most influential artists got their start. Some of the guests in the first season include Captain Kirk Douglas of the Roots, Steve Gunn, Dylan Keefe of Marcy Playground and Lenny Kaye and many more. The Bones of Old New York Premiers February 14th.

“With your feet on the air and your head on the ground…”In this week's particularly singsong-y episode the buds soar into the oft confusing matter of safely flying with your guitar. We read the federal law and FAA regulations so you don't have to, and provide all the tips you need for safe and stress-free air travel with your prized instrument. Also discussed: Fender's affordable Acoustasonic Player Telecaster, Earthworks' ETHOS broadcast mic, Apple's new self-service repair program, creepy Amazon One scanning, Brass Against getting pissy, Studio 666, and Rick Kelly's Carmine Street Guitars.Let me smell your palms.
"I like the more interesting, kinda crazy stuff". This is Cindy Hulej speaking about her special approach in building and embellishing guitars. She decorates them in many ways, from which one is to use a woodburner. Often she ends up having the bodies fully decked out with the most wonderful detailed drawings, showing portraits of e.g. the Beatles or cathedrals. She learned to built from Rick Kelly, owner of the legendary shop "Carmine Street Guitars" in New York´s famous Greenwhich Village. A place that feels like old New York as many do agree upon. Old means true creative vibes remained here, but yet fresh as I want to add, to not forget about the relentless dedication and constant transformation you can meet when entering the heart of the store, the workshop, where Cindy and Rick are to meet most likely. Cindy became a luthier eight years ago: She walked into the store wanting to learn from Rick and none other. From the beginning on she learned exactly the way Rick built, but did it under her own brand "Cindy guitars". Synesthetes will definitely agree with me that even before a Cindy guitar is played it screams: Rock´n`Roll! We talked about her very early discovery of punk, about working in an art friendly restaurant, about costumizing a guitar for a Jim Jarmusch movie and the "mystery of the molecules" which goes into all of what Cindy and Rick are doing and which has to do with the special energy of the wood they use plus the history of the shop...

Once the center of the New York bohemia, Greenwich Village is now home to luxe restaurants, and buzzer door clothing stores catering to the nouveau riche. But one shop in the heart of the Village remains resilient to the encroaching gentrification: Carmine Street Guitars. There, custom guitar maker Rick Kelly and his young apprentice Cindy Hulej, build handcrafted guitars out of reclaimed wood from old hotels, churches, bars and other local buildings. Nothing looks or sounds quite like a Rick Kelly guitar, which is the reason they are embraced by the likes of Bob Dylan, Lou Reed, Patti Smith, Jim Jarmusch, just to name a few. Featuring a cast of prominent musicians and artists, and some virtuoso performances, the film captures five days in the life of one shop in the heart of Greenwich Village that remains resilient to an all-too-quickly vanishing way of life. Director and Producer Ron Mann stops by to talk about the guitar artisans, Rick Kelly and Cindy Hulej, their own personal journeys and the last remaining vestige of a musical community that continues to inspire musicians all over the world. ABOUT THE FILMMAKER: RON MANN - The Canadian filmmaker and producer Ron Mann is renowned for his genre-bending approach to filmmaking and documentary cinema that explores art forms and contemporary popular culture with vision and verve. From jazz (Imagine the Sound, 1981), spoken word (Poetry in Motion, 1982), comics (Comic Book Confidential, 1988), dance (Twist, 1992), marijuana (Grass, 1999), car culture (Tales of the Rat Fink, 2006), fungi (Know Your Mushrooms, 2009), and independent filmmaking (Altman, 2015) Mannʼs films invoke the ethos and spirit of his subjects in resonant and contemporary ways. Rick Kelly has been hand crafting guitars for over 50 years in his hometown of New York for artists including Lou Reed, Bob Dylan, Charlie Sexton, Kirk Douglas and Bill Frisell to name a few. Rick's work - which includes the use of reclaimed timbers from historic NY locations - is the subject of a beautifully made feature film, Carmine Street Guitars, directed by Ron Mann. The film includes a star studded line-up of guitarists, but is as much a tale of Rick and his apprentice Cindy Hulej's time honoured craft in an increasingly gentrified neighbourhood. This is my first "I havent been able to see the magazine yet" podcast! Im not gonna let the length of the East Coast between me and my magazine stop me from talking about it! Cindy Hulej is building some very cool instruments out of the iconic Carmine Street Guitars shop in NYC. Her friend Jay Deville sat in and shared a couple of (post production) tunes as well. In this podcast guitarist and OutsideGuitar.com founder Aram Bajakian (Lou Reed, John Zorn, Malcolm Mooney of CAN) talks to Bill Frisell. What can be said about Bill except that everyone who has ever heard him has wondered how he's able to make the guitar sound so beautiful. During the course of his career, Bill has worked with John Zorn, Paul Motian, Marianne Faithful, Jeff Buckley, Joe Henry, Hal Willner, Allen Toussaint and Richard Hell, just to name a few. His own albums take listeners into another plane, where time is stretched and the sounds emanating from his guitar are the other-worldly soundtrack. In this interview, Bill and Aram talk about guitars, particularly all the connections that emanate from one guitar shop in Manhattan, Carmine Street Guitars, where master luthier Rick Kelly makes his telecasters and stratocasters. They also discuss Jim Jarmusch, Voidoids and Lou Reed guitarist Robert Quine, the art of practicing and pedals, in addition to other questions asked by outsideguitar.com subscribers.
