James Vaughan on Il Cinema Ritrovato: Muratova, Mambéty, and More! Welcome to The Last Thing I Saw. I'm your host, Nicolas Rapold. Il Cinema Ritrovato is an incredible film festival of restorations, revivals, and retrospectives that takes place every year in Bologna, Italy. It's a source of discovery (and/or envy) for many film lovers, and so when I heard the filmmaker James Vaughan—director of Friends and Strangers, one of my favorite movies in recent years—was attending, I knew we had to talk. Vaughan was a guest on The Last Thing I Saw last summer to talk about some very fine silent films he had been watching. In Bologna, he was looking at movies for the Sydney-based film festival Cinema Reborn, and some of his favorites included work by Kira Muratova, Djibril Diop Mambéty, and Arby Ovanessian—plus the Weimar Cinema comedy The Cabinet of Dr. Larifari. Puntata interamente dedicata all'ultima edizione del festival bolognese, svoltasi a giugno.
José returns from a week at Il Cinema Ritrovato in Bologna, just in time to see Venice crumble in Spider-Man: Far From Home, the latest injection of plot development to the Marvel series. It hits him in the gut and the film doesn't recover, José seeing a lack of respect and intelligence that colours the entire experience for him. Mike, on the other hand, doesn't particularly care for buildings, and finds a lot to like, including one of the more interesting villains Marvel has offered, one that self-referentially comments on image-making and the expanding chasm between what the public is shown and what is actually happening, and a setting - a school trip across Europe - that provides a way for the competing parts of Peter Parker's life to interfere dramatically. There's much up for debate, our experiences differing severely. Two things we can agree on: it isn't particularly well shot, and Tom Holland's performance soars. Comme ci, comme ça, as they say in Europe. Recorded on 3rd July 2019.

Pod drobnogledom sta tudi kostumska drama Zama argentinske režiserke Lucrecie Martel in dokumentarec Carmine Street Guitars o znameniti trgovini s kitarami v Greenwich Villageu v New Yorku.
Jazz festivala. What does it mean to study the means of production? Is one deconstructing the way an industry might operate, its cultural and political signification, or is simply one reproducing an apologia for capitalism itself? In a lively and spirited conversation, Peter explores these questions with one of his all-time academic heroes, Janet Staiger. The author of Interpreting Films, Perverse Spectators, and co-author of The Classical Hollywood Cinema examines the various political undertones that have always peppered her work, and where the future of media studies can go in today's political age, whether it be studying the way images are made or the way they are received. But there's also a lot of fun to be had, including the unique connections between Zombieland, a recent "romantic comedy" that just happens to feature blood and gore, and a certain 2017 film of fashionable elegance. Plus, Peter recaps his recent trip to Il Cinema Ritrovato with Welsh critic Christopher Small, where the two debate whether the films or the gelato stood out more. 0:00-4:00 Opening4:58-29:48 Establishing Shots — Il Cinema Ritrovato with Christopher Small30:33-1:05:47 Deep Focus — Janet Staiger1:06:45-1:11:40 Sponsorship Section1:13:06-1:26:35 Double Exposure — Zombieland (Ruben Fleischer)1:26:39-1:28:18 Close

In this month's podcast Mark Cosgrove, Watershed Cinema Curator, reflects on his recent visit to Bologna, Italy, for Il Cinema Ritrovato festival. The festival has been going for nearly 30 years and has grown to become a vital and important film festival. The title of the festival roughly translates as Cinema Revisited or Cinema Restored and focuses on representing restored and often neglected archive films from around the world. Mark considers the value of watching old films and having a festival dedicated to them, and argues that these films still have historic importance and resonance today.
