A new proposal to make parking more affordable around Petco Park is going back to the drawing board. Plus, the unveiling of a new five acre native garden in Paradise Hills. And, the art collection from a pair of famous musicians is on loan at the Museum of Contemporary Art in La Jolla. NBC 7's Dana Williams has these stories and more including meteorologist Brooke Martell's forecast for April, 19, 2026.
First, a Marine Corps investigation says a rare malfunction was the cause of an artillery explosion over the I-5 last fall. Then, San Diego County supervisor Paloma Aguirre is calling on SANDAG to deny immigration officials access to a law enforcement database. Plus, more on dwindling election trust ahead of the midterms. And, we visit a landfill-turned-garden in Paradise Hills.
Uma wakes up in a mental health retreat where it's clear she is just being brainwashed into marrying some prick she doesn't want to. The Goblins also discuss their recent watches.
This weekend, Muslims around California will celebrate Eid al Fitr to mark the end of Ramadan. People observing the holy month have been fasting from dawn to dusk. And although fasting is a big part of Ramadan, so is the food people eat to break the fast each night. Small shops like Besan's International Market in San Bruno are key to observing Ramadan. Not only do they supply the ingredients for the holiday, they also connect people from all ethnicities who follow Islam. Lisa Morehouse and Leenah Bassouni spent time reporting at Besan's Market for the series California Foodways. Then reporter Steven Cuevas takes us to Altadena. Tens of thousands of people evacuated the city during the Eaton Fire. But some people took a huge risk and never left, and tried to protect their homes and neighborhoods. They lived a totally different experience of the fire and its aftermath. Steven brings us this profile of two residents from opposite ends of Altadena, who made that choice to stay behind. And finally we go to southeast San Diego, where for decades, a dusty grey wall sat at the top of Division Street. Right where it curves upwards, away from the freeway, and down into the mostly residential neighborhood of Paradise Hills. Three high school friends painted a mural here 30 years ago, and as KPBS's Kori Suzuki explains, they've reunited to bring it back to life. Learn more about your ad choices. Help NinetyForChill: The #Podcast get away from paywalls by subscribing to "Ninety For Chill: The Podcast with CatBusRuss". This episode of NinetyForChill may serve as a personality profile of its host, CatBusRuss. Since 1997 and "The Fifth Element", he has been a fan and apologist of Milla Jovovich. Her direct-to-video features do not scare him off, so he was intrigued by "Paradise Hills". Neil Marshall's "Doomsday" is one of his favorite movies. It would not be fair to Marshall if Russ did not check out his collaboration with Jovovich, the "Hellboy" reboot. ThePoeticCritic is more of an influence of her little brother than he would like to acknowledge, but this lead him to give "Class Action Park" a viewing. That feature is about a very eighties attitude. Thus, it inspired him to finally watch the "Risky Business" DVD provided to him by Ally Higgins of Ally's Accessories Shop on Etsy. Another disc Ally gave her ex-boyfriend was a no budget horror movie from 2016 called "Nocturne". After that trash feature, CatBus needs to reminisce about a good gore film, so it is only fitting that "Spiral: From the Book of Saw" was the first movie he saw after cinemas finally reopened.

This week Danielle brings the style with the 2019 sci-fi film Paradise Hills. Meet Uma (Emma Roberts), someone who wears a metal cage on her face for her wedding veil and sings creepy songs to her new husband for a toast. But to become this perfect bride, some months ago she was shipped off to an island reform school for headstrong upper class ladies (Uppers) called Paradise Hills. There she meets the very odd head of the school known as The Duchess (Milla Jovovich) and immediately starts just telling her all about her life and secret lovers even though she doesn't trust anyone there. She also meets fellow "students" Chloe (Danielle Macdonald), Yu (Awkwafina), and famous singer Amarna (Eiza González), and despite their strong desire to escape one night, they all fall asleep instead and never speak of it again. Uma spends her weeks on the island wandering among the many rose gardens, eating meals of two asparagus and a glass of milk, and engaging in therapy with The Duchess. Eventually, Amarna graduates and is sent off the Island, and the next that Uma sees of her on TV Amarna seems to be a completely different person; spooky. Sam grows increasingly exasperated with a movie that seems more interested in making weird looking scenes than in making sense. To wit, one day Uma is strapped to a carousel horse and lifted high in the air and then shown a looping video of her arranged fiancé—whom she does not like—proclaiming how awesome he is for hours on end. Why this is done is utterly baffling, and made only more so when the movie's big twist is revealed. Well, one of the big twists, because the ending is so totally bonkers it nearly breaks Sam. So join us for a movie that's fun to watch and pretty to look at, but is perhaps the most-nonsensical media we've covered this year.
This week we discuss permanent daylight saving time and practical jokes. Ally from Ally's Accessories Shop on Etsy visited her/our cat Skimble and had a story about people food ruining the trail of cats left in her wake. People food and Skimble's expectations of partaking in dairy products lead to me wanting to discuss the Milla Jovovich/Emma Roberts feature "Paradise Hills" and his efforts to get his share of Ben & Jerry's Netflix & Chilled. From there, Ally provides us with some reading suggestions and an update on her shop. I get to go off on some tangents about Robert Rodriguez's "Alita: Battle Angel" and pregnancy horror movies like "Snatchers". We also discuss why cats are so often horror movie victims. There is also my Super Bowl prediction that I willed into existence. You are welcome Tom Brady.

This week we are looking at the film Paradise Hills and Level 16 both films are set at dystopian finishing schools where being the perfect girl is the goal. These young women are trapped in the trappings of femininity and sacrificed in the pursuit of an apparent notion of female perfection. We discuss this in relation to a recent TIME article that argues that women's genre filmmaking is “about women’s deepest anxieties”. Content warning: discussion of rape culture and violence against women.

State data shows that a South Bay skilled nursing facility is coping with what appears to be the largest COVID-19 outbreak among nursing homes in the state.Early Thursday evening, Reo Vista Healthcare Center in San Diego's Paradise Hills neighborhood updated a short statement on its website, indicating that it had 100 COVID-19 patients, 15 more than it had Wednesday. The total is significantly higher than the next-highest total listed in a database run by the California Department of Public Health, though figures listed in that resource reflect totals from Wednesday, not Thursday.Though the facility with an estimated 135-bed capacity does appear to currently house the most COVID-19 patients among the state's 1,223 nursing homes, that has not been the case until quite recently. Though it now has 100 COVID-19 patients, the total for the entire pandemic is 112. The record for the whole pandemic, according to state records, is 205 at a convalescent hospital in Los Angeles.Read more: https://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/news/health/story/2020-07-09/covid-19-outbreak-at-south-bay-nursing-home-is-states-largest

I watched some great movies last week. My top pick is "Goldfinch," and a remix of Shakespeare's "Hamlet" is my other most enjoyed film, "Ophelia" stars Daisy Ridley. Although I watched more than just five flicks, my other choices are "Paradise Hills," "Seberg," and the 1945 film "Sabrina." So many choices, so much time. I hope you are able to watch some of my picks. And please comment. Download. And share. Royalty-Free Music for YouTubers! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tjpv3VZGcYU&t=42s
