Steve Yzerman and Todd McLellan finally took to the podium to address Hockeytown. Tune in as we cover the Detroit Red Wings presser from GM Steve Yzerman and head coach Todd McLellan, including how they were addressing Dylan Larkin's comments, thoughts on pro scouting, their plan to bolster the core of Larkin, Lucas Raymond, Simon Edvinsson, Moritz Seider, Alex DeBrincat, Patrick Kane, and the rest of the Detroit Red Wings, what they expect out of Copp, Compher, Tarasenko, Holl, and others, whether Sebastian Cossa is ready, blunt non-comments on Jake Walman, & more (4:05). Episode SummaryAnton Jackson Smith is a synthetic biologist, Stanford PhD, and founder of b.next—a startup building synthetic cells from scratch to make biology truly programmable. Think of it as rewriting life's codebase, with applications ranging from cancer treatments and diagnostics to lab-grown foods and smart crops. In today's episode, Anton breaks down what synthetic cells actually are (and why they matter), how his open-source platform Nucleus is changing the way biology is engineered, and why the future of medicine, agriculture, and climate tech might be written in DNA.We also dig into his journey, from coding in Queenstown and law school in Otago, to cutting-edge research in Silicon Valley, and how a random article on programmable E. coli changed everything. In this conversation, we cover:• How synthetic cells could power the next generation of therapeutics and diagnostics• Why biology needs its own “AWS moment” and how open source can unlock it• The real business model behind synthetic biology (and why it's not just science)• How Kiwi strengths in agriculture and biotech could shape a global future• What New Zealand needs to do to retain and return its brightest mindsAnton also shares his vision for a safer, more ethical bio-economy, and how we can build powerful new tools without repeating the mistakes of the past.Time Stamps01:21 What is a synthetic cell—and why should you care?06:44 How Anton fell into biology (thanks to an E. coli article in Vietnam)11:12 Why modifying real cells isn't enough—and what BNext is doing differently16:30 The near-term use cases: cancer, diagnostics, and food22:47 How Nucleus is creating the open-source toolkit for biology30:14 Three phases of BNext's business model: Boot → Build → Bazaar37:10 The big vision: programmable biology that saves lives44:18 What New Zealand's biotech future could look like47:30 Returning talent, building bridges, and bringing brains back homeResources

There is this universal truth that — no matter who you are, what you believe, or where you came from — no one experiences life without grief. Not even Mattie Jackson, daughter of country music icon, Alan Jackson, and now best-selling author, speaker, and podcaster. In September of 2018, Mattie became a widow at age 28 when she tragically and very suddenly lost her husband, Ben. Since then, she has used her work and her platform to share her grief, her healing, and her unshakeable faith with women and men across the country. Today, you're going to hear our conversation about walking Through The Valley of Grief, which is the title of her new 365 day devotional of Spiritual practices for hope in suffering. You'll hear us discuss things like: Motherhood and parenting journeys (from Mattie's family's humble beginnings and her mom's profound impact on her life, to Mattie's motherhood journey and what parts of her parent's parenting she plans to implement into her own family). The 4 spiritual practices to take you from broken and resentful to a restored relationship with and trust in God: Wail, Connect, Worship and then Hope (my personal favorite part here is the way Mattie describes How helplessness of realizing you're not in control after tragedy eventually, evolves to freedom). How to find and choose joy — and the indescribable happiness we can look for and even expect to find on the other side of the valley of grief… Mattie is salt of the earth and as humble as they come. I was touched while having this conversation with her, and I hope you have the same experience listening back to it! About Mattie Jackson-Smith: Mattie Jackson is a best-selling author, speaker, and podcaster with a degree in creative writing from the University of Tennessee. Tragically, she lost her husband of less than a year, Ben Selecman, in September 2018 after he suffered a traumatic brain injury while on vacation in Florida. Despite her grief, Mattie is pushing forward and has dedicated herself to helping others through her writing and podcast, In Joy Life with Mattie Jackson. Mattie is also the co-founder of philanthropic organization "NaSHEville,” which supports groups serving orphans, widows, and trafficked women. Mattie lives with her husband and son in Nashville, TN. Today, Bailie is the host of the Your Brand of Beautiful Podcast (debuting on Apple's Top Charts) and a published author and speaker. It's New Orleans: Out to Lunch

Dr Nicolas Bazan is a world-renowned neuroscientist with a research lab in Stockholm Sweden and another here in New Orleans. When Dr Bazan was a guest on Out to Lunch, he pointed out that, compared to other fields of medicine, treatment for conditions of the human brain are at a primitive stage. For example, the current standard of care for Traumatic Brain Injury is “rest.” Part of the reason there's no medication for neurological conditions like dementia, Alzheimer's and Parkinsons is the way pharmacological research is conducted. For obvious reasons, there are rigorous controls on the development of neurological drugs before they're allowed to be tested on humans. The only new medications that are allowed to be trialed by humans are ones that have proven safe in trials on animals. But an astounding 94% of these neurological drugs fail - because preclinical results on animals can't predict results in humans. It's with this is mind that Lowry Curley founded his revolutionary biomedical research company, AxoSim. AxoSim simulates brain cells, so drug developers can try out a drug on a human brain without having an actual human being attached to it. We last talked to Lowry when this was all just getting off the ground, in 2016, a couple of years after the company was founded in New Orleans. Today, AxoSim has two laboratories, 30 employees, 3 separate research divisions, and a bunch of industry-leading patents. The human brain is a delicate organ. That's why it's housed in a hard case: the skull. But there are some activities where even the skull and a protective helmet aren't enough to prevent the brain from getting injured. One of those activities is military combat. Veterans who lose limbs in combat have established pathways to recovery. But veterans with brain injury, spinal cord injury, or other neurological conditions can go undiagnosed. Veterans who struggle with these issues find themselves isolated and lonely – part of the reason for the high rate of veteran suicide. Here in New Orleans a program called Headway is setting out to solve these issues by placing affected veterans in a purpose-built housing development, called Bastion Community of Resilience. It's a $14m, five-and-a-half acre neighborhood of homes in Gentilly in which veterans with neurological wounds live among other veterans, and volunteers. We spoke with the founder of Bastion, Dylan Tete, back in 2016 when the site was under construction. Today Bastion is a living neighborhood and we're joined by it's Executive Director, Jackson Smith. For a medium-sized city in the south of the United States, New Orleans gets a lot of publicity. Most of it - even when it's generated by our own city and state agencies - focuses on what a great place New Orleans is to eat, drink, and listen to music. And, it is. But we're so much more than that. One of these days maybe we'll also be recognized for being the home of AxoSim, a company that's revolutionizing neurological medical research, and the Bastion Community of Resilience, pioneering healthcare and the welfare of military veterans. Out to Lunch was recorded live over lunch at Columns in Uptown New Orleans. Jordan Pickford continues to keep us all entertained with his on-field antics in a huge win for Everton over Nottingham Forest, while Andre Onana and Brad Collins shared saves in a whopper of an FA Cup Semi Final between Manchester United and Coventry. Elsewhere, Keeper Capers goes into overdrive: Dean Henderson, Freddie Woodman, Aynsley Pears and Vicente Reyes all blessed with the jingle this weekend. The Goalkeeper Assist klaxon, meanwhile, is sounded for Jackson Smith of Walsall.

We dive deep into Mattie's story today as she transparently shares what it looked like to wrestle with God in life's darkest moments, ask hard questions, and bring her hurt and doubts to Jesus. The Bones of Old New York is a new podcast from Carmine Street Guitars, a guitar shop in New York's iconic Greenwich Village which opened in 1990. The podcast is hosted by Rick Kelly and Cindy Hulej, two world renowned luthiers who make guitars from repurposed wood found in historic New York City buildings. Rick Kelly has been making guitars for over 50 years and has made Instruments for some of the world's most legendary artists including Bob Dylan, Lou Reed, Motley Crue, Jim Jarmusch, Allen Woody and Lenny Kaye. Cindy started working for Rick 11 years ago as his apprentice and has quickly become one of the premier guitar builders in New York making instruments for artists like Jackson Smith, Michael Imperioli and Kurt Vile. In 2018 a documentary about the shop directed by Ron Mann (Altman, Tales of Rat Fink, Grass) premiered to critical acclaim bringing international attention to Rick and Cindy. This is when they met the producer of the Bones of Old New York, Mike Guggino, who was the sound mixer on the film. They began recording at the end of 2021 and continued sporadically throughout the last 2 years having various guests come by and talk about music, art, life, New York and of course, guitars. The idea behind the podcast is simple. The listener gets to hang out in the back of the shop with Rick, Cindy and Mike while they have conversations with artists and shop regulars. It's a window into a time when Greenwich Village was full of painters, musicians, beat poets, coffee shops and counterculture freak-niks. A place where many of today's most influential artists got their start. Some of the guests in the first season include Captain Kirk Douglas of the Roots, Steve Gunn, Dylan Keefe of Marcy Playground and Lenny Kaye and many more. Last month, the U.S. Supreme Court balked at the prospect of confronting a lower court about its efforts to delay the redrawing of Louisiana's congressional maps. Now many are left wondering if Gov. John Bel Edwards will do anything to address the redistricting question during the remainder of his term. Stephanie Grace, columnist and editorial director for The Times-Picayune/The Advocate, joins us to discuss the status of the case.  Last Saturday was Veterans Day, a time to honor service members throughout the country – about 15,000 of whom live in New Orleans. It's not always easy for veterans to reconnect with their communities after returning from deployment.  Recently, Bastion Community of Resilience – a New Orleans-based intentional living community for veterans – helped launch the New Orleans Veterans Coalition, an organization that brings together former military members together for acts of service. Jackson Smith, executive director of Bastion, tells us how the new coalition aims to help veterans recovering from the physical and mental impacts of war. There's a simple shotgun double in the 900 block of North Tonti Street in New Orleans' Treme neighborhood that looks like countless others throughout the city. But what happened at this house in the 1950's and ‘60's shaped the Civil Rights Movement, not only in New Orleans, but across the nation. That house, home to activist Oretha Castle Haley and her family, is now on the National Register of Historic Places, thanks to the efforts of a Tulane University graduate student. That student, Robin Smith, joins us to talk about the importance of the house – and of preserving our historical places. Today's episode of Louisiana Considered was hosted by Bob Pavlovich. Our managing producer is Alana Schreiber and our assistant producer is Aubry Procell. Lakota West defeated visiting St. X in 2022 while the Bombers won the 2021 matchup. "Such a special game last year; it'll be special this year," Bolden said. "I've said it over and over again: It's what's best about high school football when you can have games like that. Have them early or whenever but especially right off the bat. You'll know what you got. You'll know what you're good at. You'll know what you have to fix." Lakota West (13-1 in 2022), which has made three consecutive Division I regional final appearances, defeated the visiting Bombers 16-13 in the 2022 season opener. The Firebirds return plenty of talented playersincluding senior safety Taebron Bennie-Powell, who is verbally committed to Notre Dame. Lakota West has a new starting quarterback in freshman Jackson Smith after four-year starter Mitch Bolden graduated this spring. St. X (5-7) returns several talented players from last season including senior defensive lineman Ted Hammond, who is verbally committed to Michigan. The Bombers return junior quarterback Chase Herbstreit to lead the offense this season along with several other key starters. Friday night is expected to have a large crowd at RDI Stadium for two teams with significant expectations in Division I, Region 4. "I've always thought that you want great games early because it's going to define who you are win or lose - you're going to find out where you are real fast," Specht said. "I wouldn't trade it for anything in the world. You want to challenge your kids every week. We definitely do that."More at https://wcpo.com/HSinsiderSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Soo Hong as its 2023 Legislator of the Year     Plus, we visit with Leah McGrath from Ingles markets about cutting back on sugar   All of this and more is coming up on the Gwinnett Daily Post podcast.   Commercial : Slappey   Story 1. chamber   The Gwinnett Chamber has appointed Jason DiFranco as the vice president of the Gwinnett Chamber Foundation. DiFranco brings extensive experience from his previous roles, including working with the Gwinnett County Public Library system and various organizations such as the Boy Scouts of America and Cleveland Clinic-Hillcrest Hospital. In his new position, DiFranco will focus on creating equitable opportunities for underserved businesses in Gwinnett County through funding and grant programs. He aims to reduce financial barriers, provide educational and technical assistance, expand business networks, and address skill gaps to foster business growth. DiFranco's appointment is expected to contribute to the Foundation's success and gain support from Gwinnett's business community….read more about this at gwinnettdailypost.com   STORY 2: delegation   Three members of Gwinnett County's state Senate delegation, Senators Clint Dixon, Nabilah Islam, and Kim Jackson, have been appointed by Lt. Gov. Burt Jones to serve on Senate study committees. These committees will focus on local option sales taxes, truck driver shortages, and rural medical personnel recruitment. The committees were established during the 2023 legislative session, and the senators' findings and recommendations from their meetings during the legislative off-season may lead to the introduction of new bills in the next legislative session. Lt. Gov. Jones expressed confidence in the expertise and knowledge of the appointees and looks forward to addressing their recommendations in the 2024 Legislative Session.     Story 3: junior   State Representative Soo Hong, a Republican from Lawrenceville, has been honored with the 2023 Legislator of the Year award by the Junior League of Atlanta. This award recognizes her significant contributions to the league's mission of developing women into leaders and promoting volunteerism and community transformation. In her statement, Rep. Brian Kemp's House floor leaders for the 2023-2024 legislative term   we'll be right back:   Break 1: MOG- Tom Wages - then Obits   STORY 4: scammers   In another reminder from a previous story, Gwinnett County police are warning residents about phone scams where scammers impersonate law enforcement officials to extort money. In a recent incident, a Lilburn resident received multiple calls claiming he had to pay $9,000 to clear an arrest warrant. The scammer initially posed as a Gwinnett Sheriff's Office agent and received payment in Bitcoin. Subsequent calls claimed to be from Gwinnett Police Chief J.D. McClure, but no additional transfers were made. The police department emphasizes that they will never ask for payment over the phone and advises residents to be cautious of immediate payment demands, unsolicited calls or emails, and sharing personal or financial information. If scammed, residents should report the crime to the police and refer to the provided phone scam warning information.…….Read more about this at gwinnettdailypost.com     Story 5: primates   A study involving the mapping of DNA from over 800 individuals of 233 primate species has identified millions of mutations related to human diseases. The research provides valuable insights into the human genome and the causes of diseases. The study used a deep learning algorithm called PrimateAI-3D to analyze the genomic data. The findings revealed complex genetic relationships among primate species and shed light on the evolution of baboons. The research also suggests interbreeding occurred between early modern humans, Neanderthals, and Denisovans. Furthermore, the study aids in conservation efforts by identifying species in need of protection. The catalog of primate genomic information has also contributed to understanding unique mutations in humans.         Story 6: cats   Cats often knock things off tables and countertops to seek attention or to play. To prevent this behavior, ensure your cat's needs are met, including sufficient food and attention. Combat boredom by regularly changing their toys and using puzzle toys for mental stimulation. Discourage them from accessing tables and countertops by making them unappealing and removing enticing items. You can also use deterrents that emit unpleasant sounds or puffs of air when the cat jumps up. These deterrents are effective as cats won't associate you with the unpleasant experience. By implementing these strategies, you can discourage your cat from engaging in this behavior.     .……back in a moment   Commercial: ESOG- Gen Expo- Ingles 4   Story 7: smith   Jackson Smith, a recent graduate of Mountain View High School, has committed to the baseball program at Bryan College in Tennessee. Smith, who excels in multiple positions including outfielder, middle infielder, and utility player, was recognized as the Gwinnett Dugout Club's Player of the Month in March for the Bears. Additionally, he showcased his athletic abilities as an all-county punter for Mountain View's football team. Smith's commitment to Bryan College marks an exciting opportunity for his future in baseball.   Story 8: Reyes   Ethan Reyes, a senior at Brookwood High School, has made his commitment to join the baseball program at Coppin State University in Maryland. Reyes, who specializes as a middle infielder, earned recognition as a second-team All-Region 4-AAAAAAA selection during the previous season while playing for the Broncos' state playoff team.
