Tonight we tackle the highly annoying idea of electric guitar “tonewood.” Does the wood that your electric guitar is made out of affect the sound? Many guitar manufacturers and guitar pros say yes, but science says no. Paul Reed Smith drops in to dip a rig and unpack the facets of tone—and why he unwound—and destroyed—a set of $10k vintage Fender pickups. Plus, all the fun stuff: What's it like working with John Mayer? Does Santana's guitar sound like a tenor sax? Why does David Grissom need every PRS on a music-store wall to play great? And the dudes argue over the big question: What's better a cheap guitar and an expensive amp, or an expensive guitar and a cheap amp?Big thanks to StewMac for sponsoring this episode.
JR Robison is a District Sales Manager at Taylor Guitars. In this interview, we discuss guitar collecting, tonewoods, models, and new guitars out from Taylor Guitars. We also talk about JR's recent move from Ramona California to San Antonio Texas so that he can better serve his reseller community.Taylor Guitars was founded in 1974 by Bob Taylor and Kurt Listug, and has grown into the leading global builder of premium acoustic guitars. Renowned for blending modern, innovative manufacturing techniques with a master craftsman's attention to detail, Taylor acoustic guitars are widely considered among the best-sounding and easiest to play in the world. The company is a pioneer in the use of computer mills, lasers and other high-tech tools and proprietary machinery, and today, Bob Taylor is widely recognized throughout the musical instrument industry as the visionary acoustic guitar manufacturer.Today, Taylor employs over 1,200 people and produces hundreds of guitars per day exclusively in two factory complexes in the U.S and Mexico: El Cajon, California, and in Tecate, Baja California, Mexico. (Taylor does not manufacture any guitars in Asia.) The company maintains an active dealer network, with Taylor guitars sold through hundreds of retail locations in North America and with international distribution to 60 countries, including a distribution warehouse and factory service center in the Netherlands. Our site has a wealth of information about what goes into making a Taylor guitar and how to make this very important decision. We have guides for how to find the right fit for you. Learn about the subtle differences in shapes and styles. Delve into different types of woods and construction, which are vital to the flavor and tone of an acoustic. Explore the Taylor line by series to find the look and style you want for your instrument.Every guitar player needs a great acoustic guitar – or several – in their collection. Finding the right acoustic guitar for you can be a daunting process even for the most seasoned player. If you are new to shopping for guitars, then it is even more critical that you learn all you can before you make your first purchase. If your first acoustic guitar is not the appropriate choice for you, then it can dramatically reduce the enjoyment you will get out of your instrument. If you are a new guitar player, the wrong guitar can be downright discouraging. You want a guitar that fits you, is effortless to play, and has the rich, beautiful tone you love to make it the instrument you dream of playing hour after hour.

This week on Beer Sessions Radio, Jimmy is highlighting the powerful women defining the craft malt industry. On the show is Jesse Bussard from the North American Craft Maltsters Guild in Bozeman, MT; Kether Scharff-Gray from Mainstem Malt in Walla Walla, WA; and Hilary Barile from Rabbit Hill Farms & Malt House in Shiloh, NJ.To kick things off, Jesse introduces us to her role at the Craft Maltsters Guild. Then, Hilary walks us through Rabbit Hill Farms and Malthouse, where they grow and malt all their grains themselves. The agriculture side of growing barley is very important, and Hilary discusses the challenges of weather, seasons, and supplying locally. Kether also reflects on the climate out in Washington and the complications of growing dry land grain.Jesse then highlights the quality control process, which takes place in labs across the country. This work helps develop regionally adapted barley varieties, matching the crop to the environment where it would have the best chance of growing. Speaking of grains, the gang then names an iconic beer with flavor dependent on its malt, and reflects on reeducating the brewing community about the agriculture side of beer. To wrap things up, Jesse, Kether, and Hilary explain the strong role women have played in the development of the craft malt industry, and the task force the Guild is creating to help work towards more diversity and inclusion. For forty years, Bruce Harvie (Orcas Island Tonewoods) has carved out a nice existence for himself in the instrument making world as a tonewood supplier. His one-man operation is based in one of the most beautiful spots in North America (Washington State's San Juan Islands), where he sells spruce, redwood and other raw materials to mandolin and bowed instrument makers around the world. He's also a prolific musician. Though he makes his living selling hand-selected wood, Harvie is quick to point out that there's great instrument-making materials all around us, for cheap. "It's amazing how many mandolins get burned," he says. "I've gotten a lot of wood out of firewood piles." On this week's Fretboard Journal Podcast, we talk to Harvie about his early instrument building days, how he sources his tonewoods, and about some of the lesser-used woods in instrument making that deserve a chance. Follow Orcas Island Tonewoods here and listen to Bruce's new album here. This episode is sponsored by Mono Cases and Retrofret Vintage Guitars.
As a guitar player - the wood quality of your guitar matters, whether you know it or not. Why? Because the wood materials are the very key element dictating whether any guitar has the potential – the genes – to become a decent musical instrument.Today we'll talk talk about Thermally Aged Tonewood. If you're not familiar with the term, you still might have heard about roasted or caramelized maple. All this stuff might sound to you like esoteric mumbo jumbo that has nothing to do with rock'n'roll, after watching this live stream you might think otherwise!I have invited a guest who knows all there is to know about thermal modification of tonewood. My teacher and mentor for many years, please give a warm welcome to the grand old master guitar maker Rauno Nieminen.A little disclaimer - this podcast is not about the guitars we make in my company. Instead, it's simply a dialogue to help you, who are interested in learning more about your own instrument. The brand of the guitar makes no difference whatsoever. These podcasts have been edited from my Weekly Wednesday Q&A YouTube live streams. You'll probably notice this from time to time when listening. If you feel you're missing a detail due to the lack of moving picture, you can always find the equivalent content on YouTube! Talk to you soon,Juha

There is a romance to uncertain times. In the undulations and valleys that we experience in life we are given an opportunity to learn new ways to do things. Much like the relationship between a master and his student, experiences offer us an opportunity to see things from a different angle. This episode isnt about making guitars, per se, but about making a dream come true….about finding a muse and following it to completion. We'll be talking with Tom Thiel, an entrepreneur who spent his life in pursuit of a craft. He has built over 500 instruments. Built a sound company. He knows that by trial and error one learns things, masters them. This man creates 'serious wood products.'We'll also meet a piece of wood called DragonTongue. It's worth a listen for those who wish to master a talent. Music from the episode comes from none other than the amazing Reverend Freakchild. In this video lesson I share with you a way to make your chord changes not only easier... but more interesting and fun by adding bass walks. And if you watch to the end, you'll get the Master Formula to create ANY bass walk you want. #3 What's On the Turntable This Week? This week’s featured acoustic artist is Gwenifer Raymond who comes recommended to us by Acoustic Tuesday listener Mark Clark H. from Ardre, Gotland. Mark says, "She's a young up and coming Welsh fingerstyle guitarist who's influenced by Fahey and other American Primitives, as well as old country blues. She also has a Ph.D. in astrophysics and designs video games in her day job--so pretty interesting bio. Her first LP just came out this year and it rocks deeply, or maybe picks deeply rather?" #2 Tonewood Amp Review The Tonewood Amp has been recommended to me many times. The folks at Tonewood were kind enough to send me a demo model. This unit is completely unassuming. Installation was super easy, and it did not mark the finish on my guitar. I was intimidated to install it but am surprised at how easy and seamless it went. Once installed, it was extremely user-friendly. I see this as a very useful, creative tool. #1 The GIG At Belmont Review There's a lot of talk about planning in the new year. WBZ's Jordan Rich talks with Matt Robinson of matts-meals.com about sponsoring a maple tree to help small producers grow big.
We sat down at the studio one night and discussed summertime beers and some of the festivals that are coming up this season along with Eric's lack of technology. We sampled beers from Bolero Snort, Tuckahoe and Tonewood among others.
Just in time for Philly Beer Week, we sit down with Felicia D'Ambrosio and Tom Peters from the LEGENDARY Monk's Cafe in Philadelphia. In the first half we discuss all things Federal Donuts and Phish with Felicia. We get to the bottom of how she's involved with Federal Donuts and how they became the official donut of Phish's Bakers Dozen at Madison Square Garden last Summer. Oh, and Felicia ALSO works at Monk's! Tom Peters, the owner of Monks joins the conversation for the second half . Felicia and Tom drop SERIOUS beer science and help us remember why we love what we do in the beer business. Tom tells us us the Monks story first hand and gives us a rare look behind the curtain at one of the most important beer bars on EARTH! We are still vibrating from this episode and can't thank Tom and Felicia enough. Grab an Orval, pour it in a glass, and thank Tom Peters while you're listening to this episode!

Everyday is IPA day. Even though there's an actual "IPA Day" on the calendar (sometime in August maybe?) it really occurs every day of the week. Saison needed its own day to bask in the sunlight and be appreciated for its delicate intricacies, and Allagash Brewing created such a day. We celebrated Saison Day with our very good friends at Tonewood brewing. Ryan Egan from Tonewood sat in, Jared Ruocco from Allagash stopped by to explain Saison Day, we figured out where our lost microphone cables escaped to, and Richard explains his latest employment situation. I don't remember the last time we laughed this hard on a podcast. If you need a few HA-HA's in your life, this is the episode for you. Pop open a beautiful Saison and enjoy the ride.
This episode takes place at the bar in Rob's house and was recorded on 3 iPhones. We each had one in front of us. All 3 files were sent to Richard where he married the audio to make it sound whole. Only issue was, Jay Rose got 2 calls during the recording which threw off the Synch. Richard being the audio dynamo that he his, saved the episode. JR sounds a little like a Daft Punk robot toward the end which isn't the end of the world. That's what he gets for not turning on airplane mode while recording. We drink beers from Omnipollo, Evil Twin, Neshaminy Creek, and our boys Tonewood. A NICE time was had by all.
This episode was recorded with Jimmy McMillan and Nick Less from their newest Philly Homebrew Outlet location in Oaklyn NJ. We touch on all the interesting things these guys are up to over there from home brewing, to bee keeping, to making homemade sourdough bread, Kombucha, and soap. They're located next to Tonewood brewing and they're ready to help you discover a new DIY hobby! Also, Richard's dog is prominently featured on the podcast barking every 4 seconds followed by Richard clapping at the dog to quiet it down. That does not work. Like at all. Beers are consumed and whiskey shows up at the end just to make sure the end of the podcast is the train wreck it normally is. Mission accomplished.
We hopped across the mighty Delaware river into New Jersey once again, this time to pay a visit to Tonewood Brewing in Oaklyn. Joining us were Co-Founder and Head Brewer Eli along with special guest Kyle McHerron, microbiologist, homebrewer and beer-slinger at Village Idiot Brewing. Our conversation spanned all things Tonewood, including some exciting distribution news. Dan delivered some gloomy brew news, including Green Flash’s distribution pull back and layoffs and Smuttynose Brewing seeking and immediate buyout. In Happy Fun Time, Wayne brought a new spin on the is-this-a-fake-beer genre with some AI generated beer names. And Steph broke down what’s in your wort in a particularly sciencey edition of Know Your Beers. All the while we imbibed a bounty of beautiful Tonewood brews.
This episode has been a long time in the making. We sit down with Eli, Taylor, Ryan and Katie from Tonewood Brewing to discuss how they have risen to become one of the hottest breweries in the region! You'll see how we go from quiet, to comfortable and informative, to complete chaos over the course of 2 1/2+ hours. We added some music in spots, Jay Rose did a voice over 2 hours and 25 mins in to describe the chaos and the end is well... you should hear it, Phish is involved! This might be some of our best work and easily one of the most fun podcasts we've ever done, you'll def hear that when you listen. Grab a Fuego and and take a ride with Tonewood!
The first time Matt Hampton sought out to harvest Red spruce for guitar tops, he, quite simply, "searched Google Earth for dark patches on top of tall mountains." Matt and his brother Nate are now continuing the legacy started by Ted Davis and John Arnold and making a full-time living hunting down Adirondack red spruce for luthiers and larger-scale guitar manufacturers. Matt describes the process and how one tree can yield up to 500 tops, their unlikely start in the world of guitarmaking, their relationship with John Arnold and more. He also busts a few myths about spruce. We also hear about the brothers' quest to find quality domestic back and side tonewoods. It's a fascinating story, they sound almost like the American Pickers of trees. Watch the Brothers harvest a Red spruce tree here on YouTube. You can contact the Hampton Brothers via email (hamptonbros@live.com) or eBay. Our sponsors today are Retrofret Vintage Guitars and Dying Breed Music. While any strong that vibrates at 261.62 Hz, you’ll hear a middle C. In the easiest of terms, the voicebox of all of these instruments that determines what that tone sounds like, lies primarily in the wood. The density, and flexibility of the wood affects its resonance. the sound is echoed inside guitar body and the characteristics of the wood affect the sound that is distributed outwards. If you knew all of that, and you’ve spent your entire career working with wood in the forestry industry, you’d likely end up discovering that some of the trees that grow in abundance in the West Kootenay match the characteristics for the soundboard. These specific mountain side sentinels, standing amongst our forest just happen to be perfect for making great sounding guitars from. Graham Heim of Fruitvale, BC figured this out while working in the logging industry for much of his career. He tested it out and his company Kootenay Tonewood has since supplied soundboards to major guitar companies around the world as well as specialty craft builders. The next time you ear picks up the changes in air pressure we call music coming from an acoustic guitar. If you follow its sweet sounds back to their vibrating wood source, there’s a strong chance that wood previously stood on a Kootenay hillside.
Law professor, author and Fretboard Journal Field Editor John Thomas joins us once again to discuss some recent updates to CITES and the impact they will have on musicians, instrument collectors and builders. Specifically, beginning January 2017, all remaining species of Rosewood (beyond Brazilian, which was already protected) will be added to CITES Appendix II. This may not affect you at all if you keep your guitars in United States but if you ever plan on taking an instrument with rosewood across the border (or selling one to someone outside the country), you may have some work to do. We discuss the various steps that collectors, luthiers and dealers should take if they want to transport guitars with rosewood internationally; how builders can protect their wood stockpile; the expenses and timing needed to file all this paperwork; and a lot more. Dori Ross has used her vast experience in marketing to elevate the status of maple which is a true luxury food. She has teamed up with artisan sugar makers in Vermont's Mad River Valley to create Tonewood, a line of maple based products. The sugar makers supply single-source syrup, some of which Dori sells. The rest gets delivered to a group of local Vermont artisan candy-makers, who transform the liquid staple into solid and truly unique goodies in the Tonewood line – a maple cube, maple cream and maple flakes. Dori has a very interesting approach to product development and branding and this helps her to differentiate her products in the marketplace.
