On the heels of Mother's Day in the U.S., we bring you the 5th episode in our New Earth-ing series—a timely and expansive conversation with writer and founder of Chix, Nergiz DeBaere. In this episode, we explore matriarchy as a grounded, ancient, and forward-looking social system—one rooted in maternal values, egalitarian principles, and a deep reverence for life. Nergiz shares how matriarchy offers a real, tangible path forward as we collectively face climate change, spiritual disconnection, and social fragmentation. We talk about:The link between ecofeminism and matriarchyHow environmental and women's rights policies are deeply interconnectedWhat we've been taught is “natural” — and why it's notWhere matriarchal values already exist in our livesThe bridge from patriarchy to matriarchyRedefining masculinity and femininity in liberating waysHow matriarchal systems can help address the epidemic of male lonelinessThe power of barter and gift economies in shaping a new futureThis is not about flipping power from one group to another—it's about reimagining the system itself. CatalYm is preparing to initiate its broad phase 2b clinical development program for visugromab to tackle multiple solid tumor indications. Visugromab is a monoclonal antibody that neutralizes the tumor-derived growth differentiation factor-15 (GDF-15), a locally acting immunosuppressant fostering immunotherapy resistance. Neutralizing GDF-15 with visugromab reverses key cancer resistance mechanisms to reinstate an efficient anti-tumor response by reenabling immune cell activation, proliferation and Interferon-γ signature induction. Visugromab has demonstrated a good safety profile and potent and durable anti-tumor efficacy in combination with anti-PD-1 treatment in advanced cancer patients, as highlighted in its recent Nature publication and interim clinical data. This week we have a conversation with Eugen Leo, chief medical officer at CatalYm.01:30-03:38: About CatalYm03:38-06:59: Solid tumors and also why they are hard to treat06:59-09:04: Current treatments for solid tumors09:04-10:47: What is immunotherapy resistance?10:47-12:23: What is visugromab?12:23-13:32: CatalYm's clinical development program13:32-15:12: What represents success for patients using visugromab?15:12-17:50: Other treatment options being developed17:50-19:50: CatalYm's pipeline and the futureThis week's podcast was sponsored by TCR Solutions.Interested in being a sponsor of an episode of our podcast? Ep 282, How to Protect Yourself From Over-drinking in the FutureThis episode I discuss the importance of doing what you can to protect yourself from over-drinking in the future. You might be someone who has made great progress in stopping the over-drinking. Now, you might be lacking on 'doing the work' that you did in the beginning to get where you are now. This episode encourages you to invest in your self-care even when things are going well. Stress and taking on too many things takes a toll on our well-being and if you aren't investing into yourself you can feel on the edge and if this goes on too long it can lead you to over-drink. Over-drinking doesn't usually happen because of one event in one given day, it builds over time and this episode helps you understand how you can protect yourself from over-drinking in the future by taking care of yourself today. They dive into Israel Piekrash's unique upbringing in the religious Zionist community, his shift in thinking about the Palestinians, and the vision of the Anahnu Movement before moving to current events, including the present state of the settler movement, protests against the judicial overhaul, and the likely reaction by far-right politicians to an Israel-Saudi normalization deal. Last Thursday, Senators Ossoff, Young, Booker, and Lankford introduced the Middle East Security Coordination Act, which seeks to strengthen the critical work of the United States Security Coordinator in Jerusalem to help stabilize the security situation in the West Bank in the service of a future two-state outcome. We love a great entrepreneurial origin story. How the idea was sparked, what problem needed to be solved, and the process they took to get to where they are now.If you're like us, and love a great story, then today's episode is right up your alley!Mel McNamee is the founder of Lykke, Canada's first designer inflatable pool brand. But Lykke is about more than just gorgeous adult inflatable pools. The name comes from the Danish word meaning Pursuit of Happiness. Mel wants to help her customers elevate their backyard experience through Lykke pools. And have a rockin' summer!Prior to creating Lykke Mel worked as a project manager for 10 years. She had always wanted to start her own business, but never found the right idea. Then during the summer of 2020 the right idea presented itself.Like so many parents with young children, summer means spending time outside in the pool. When Mel went to buy one for her daughter she wanted something that wasn't an eyesore. But everything she found had cartoon characters on it and wasn't “on trend”. And in terms of function, she couldn't find anything that wouldn't collapse, or overflow, when she sat in it with her daughter. So Mel went to work developing the type of inflatable pool she would want to use and soon found others wanted as well. In the first season, Lykke sold out completely! These last couple of years have taught Mel a ton about entrepreneurship. And herself. The lessons she has learned include:It's okay to start smallEmbrace the support of your communityGet over the fear of startingListen to the feedback to help you validate new ideas for the futureThis season Lykke has unveiled new designs as well as launching a collection of hats. Hidden Forces Podcast Notes Key Takeaways “History is really one damn disaster after another” Niall FergusonWe don’t have any good frameworks to think about disastersWe tend to silo catastrophes in different categories (war, financial crises, natural disasters, etc…)However, there are common features shared across catastrophesIf you take a step back, the distinction between natural or man-made disaster fadesEven natural disasters are politically mediatedWhen a disaster hits, the temptation is to blame the person at the topThe person in charge does have responsibilities, but it’s too simplistic to just blame themWe need to take seriously the potential dangers of the escalation of US-China relationshipsThe pandemic accelerated the degradation of China’s relationship with most democraciesNiall thinks we are now in Cold War IIClimate change is only one of the big threats that we faceThe war of the future would be hugely disruptive to life, in a way that no previous war has been in the United StatesWars often begin when there’s a perception that odds of winning will get worse in the futureThis justifies acting as soon as possible, even if there are risks involvedNiall expects China to try to take over Taiwan by the end of the decadeThere’s a high risk of the US falling behind in financial technologyRead the full notes @ podcastnotes.orgIn Episode 189 of Hidden Forces, Demetri Kofinas speaks with historian Niall Ferguson about his latest book, “Doom: The Politics of Catastrophe.” The book is a historical tour de force of epic disasters ranging from pandemics to botched military responses, to nuclear accidents. What all these catastrophes share in common is a striking combination of operator and managerial error resulting from systemic problems that became calamities in the face of predictable, though unimaginable crises. While Doom is mainly a history of disaster, its lessons apply most urgently in our own time, which provided us an opportunity to explore some of the contemporary challenges that we face in western society with someone who thinks and writes about such risks and opportunities regularly. At the top of this list is an emerging cold war between the United States and a coalition of authoritarian powers led by China and Russia, two nations that are increasingly cooperating on matters of national and economic security. This episode also includes a discussion about financial markets, digital assets, and the health of Western economies. In place of an overtime, Demetri recorded a premium-only episode with Grant Williams on endgame scenarios for the economy, including a conversation about the prospects for runaway inflation and how to manage that risk for your portfolio. Today she's a thoughtful advocate for intersectional environmentalism who insists that every environmentalist should be anti-racist. In our chat we explore: How her personal experience of the killing of Michael in Brown Ferguson, Missouri made her look at environmental science in a new wayWhat intersectional environmentalism is and why it matters in 2020How she responds to the argument that we live in a colorblind societyWhat environmental lessons we can all learn from Indigenous people Where she hopes to see the environmental movement go in the futureThis episode is packed with compassion, wisdom, and hope and will change the way you think about nature for the better.
