On the Saturday March 28, 2026 edition of The Richard Crouse Show we meet singer-songwriter and producer Peter Elkas. He’s toured the world as a multi-instrumentalist and vocalist with the likes of Neko Case, Joel Plaskett, and Andy Kim, released a string of celebrated solo records produced by Don Kerr and Charlie Sexton, and shared stages with everyone from Feist and Nick Lowe to The Doobie Brothers and Bruce Springsteen. Now, “Lion Lion,” originally released on his 2018 EP Lion, is roaring back into focus thanks to an unexpected new chapter. Elkas recently stepped into the acting world, appearing as Ed—the local record store owner—in the 2026 Netflix original series Finding Her Edge. In a perfectly meta twist, the show also features “Lion Lion” in an episode Elkas appears in, with the song landing on Netflix’s official Finding Her Edge playlist. We talk about the resurgence of the song and more! Then, award-winning Iranian Canadian filmmaker Alireza Khatami. His debut feature, Oblivion Verses (2017), premiered at the Venice Film Festival, earning multiple accolades including the Best Screenplay award in that category, the FIPRESCI Prize, and the Interfilm Award. In 2023, he co-directed Terrestrial Verses, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival. Today we talk about his latest film The Things You Kill, a psychological thriller exploring family dynamics, toxic masculinity, and personal trauma (drawing heavily from his own experiences). It premiered in the World Cinema Dramatic Competition at Sundance, where he won the Directing Award, and was selected as Canada's official entry for Best International Feature Film at the 98th Academy Awards and it is now playing in theatres everywhere.

Today on the program, we're letting our friends at The Bluegrass Situation takeover our feed with a brand new series called "Finding Lucinda." Episode One: Introducing Finding Lucinda As we join the story, Ismay has been living and working on their family ranch for almost a decade – and they're looking for change. For several years the independent singer-songwriter has been playing in a Lucinda Williams tribute band and writing their own music. An opportunity to record an album sparks a new and different idea: to instead embark on a road trip to uncover the early days of Lucinda's music career and, hopefully, find a way forward creatively. However, they are plagued by self doubt about whether pursuing music can still be worthwhile for them. But in spite of this uncertainty, Ismay dives into research to see where a journey across the country – and further into the life and music of Lucinda – could lead. Links: Finding Lucinda on The Bluegrass Situation Facebook Instagram X Website Credits: Distributed by The Bluegrass Situation Produced and mixed by Avery Hellman for Neanderthal Records LLC Music by ISMAY and The Lake Charlatans Artwork by Avery Hellman Guests: Mary Gauthier, Wolf Stephenson, John Grimaudo, Charlie Sexton Special thanks to: Joel Fendelman, Liz McBee, Rose Bush, Mick Hellman, Chuck Prophet, Jonathan McHugh, Jacqueline Sabec, Lucinda Williams & Tom Overby About Finding Lucinda: Finding Lucinda follows a young singer-songwriter on a road trip of self discovery to trace the roots of their musical hero Lucinda Williams. Amidst self-doubt and uncertainty, ISMAY sets out from the family ranch in Northern California and travels to Texas, Louisiana and Tennessee. There ISMAY meets Lucinda's early collaborators, digs through the archives to uncover hidden treasures, and visits the studios and venues where Lucinda got her start. Interviews include Charlie Sexton, Buddy Miller, and Mary Gauthier. Finding Lucinda is ultimately a story about not knowing whether you have what it takes to be the artist you want to be, and looking for answers on how to move forward anyways. It's about finding a small way to be more like your hero. Listen on The Bluegrass Situation or where you get your shows and look out for the Finding Lucinda film coming Fall 2025.
Ryan Bingham never knew until he was an adult that his path would take him into music full time, much less that he would become an international star, nor did he dream of eventually reaching millions more people in film and television. He did not play guitar with much skill until his early twenties. However, he wrote one of his most enduring hits while woodshedding on guitar and harmonica, “Southside of Heaven”. His musical foundation goes back to early exposure to a great record collection and the influence of his father and uncle, especially: as a boy, he was gifted a trove of LPs from the likes of Townes Van Zandt, Guy Clark, Joey Lee, Terry Allen, and The Flatlanders, and you can hear bits and pieces of all those artists' sensibilities and approaches in his music from the jump. As Bingham said in our interview, “I still got vinyl. My family had a bar back in the 60s and 70s in New Mexico called the Halfway Bar. And my uncle saved all the vinyl records out of there from those days. And he ended up giving them to me. And that was really the music I grew up on. I remember living with him at a time and, you know, him showing me how to clean the records with the brush and on the turntable. And I was really, you know, 10, 11 years old and just fascinated with the artwork on that. I remember he had like, Commander Cody and the Lost Planet Airman was live at the Armadillo World Headquarters and all that Jim Franklin art, you know, and all those albums. It was just, I loved all that stuff. So I still got those records and play them all the time.” Ryan Bingham Currently working on a new album scheduled for release in 2026, Ryan Bingham is testing out a number of his new songs on the road, which is where he spoke with my friend Jeff Williams and myself when he played Charlotte recently, in October. In our conversation, we talked about everything from those early days where he was striving to simply have a better job than manual labor, key figures in his career like Marc Ford and Charlie Sexton, pivotal moments like joining My Morning Jacket, Wilco and Bob Dylan on stage, to playing with his current band The Texas Gentlemen, and a whole lot more, including his new song “The Lucky Ones” and excerpts from his latest live album, Ryan Bingham and The Texas Gentlemen Live at Red Rocks as well. Songs heard in this episode:“Southside Of Heaven” by Ryan Bingham and The Texas Gentlemen, from Live at Red Rocks“Jingle and Go” by Ryan Bingham and The Texas Gentlemen, from Live at Red Rocks“The Lucky Ones” by Ryan Bingham and The Texas Gentlemen, excerpt, excerpt“Bread & Water” by Ryan Bingham and The Texas Gentlemen, from Live at Red RocksThanks to my friend Jeff Williams for inspiring me to pursue interviewing Ryan Bingham, and for joining us in our conversation. Thanks also to the team at Sacks & Co. in Nashville for helping to coordinate with Ryan Bingham's team and pave the way for this episode. Thanks to Jaclyn Anthony for producing the radio adaptations of this series on public radio WNCW, where we worked with Joshua Meng who wrote and performed our theme songs. Please take a moment and give us a top rating and where you can, a review. It makes a big impact on the ranking and therefore the visibility of this series to all the other music fans who also follow podcasts.

"Sonic Ranch" Licking his wounds from the breakup of his band Big Car, the Texas-born singer/songwriter Miles Zuniga found himself out west--and when I say out west I mean about ten minutes from where we record this podcast. Miles got a job working at Chez Panisse and hanging out on Telegraph Avenue at Cody's Books and Amoeba Music. The Big Car experience hadn't been great, so Miles was plotting out his next moves while he worked in Alice Waters' restaurant and I'll let him tell you how that all played out, so let's just fast forward to when he moved back to Texas and joined forces with bassist/singer Tony Scalzo and drummer Joe Shuffield to form Fastball. The trio's debut Make Your Mama Proud evinced their penchant for punchy pop genius but it was their sophomore record All The Pain That Money Can Buy that put them on the map. The album's first single "The Way" was pretty much a pop sensation, hitting the number one slot of charts for seven weeks. The next two singles "Out Of My Head" and "Fire Escape" helped fuel the album's Platinum status and Zuniga, a long way now from his Chez Panisse days, found his band with two Grammy nominations. Over the course of their career, Fastball have collaborated with Billy Preston, Steve Berlin, Adam Schlesinger and Charlie Sexton. From Keep Your Wig On to The Help Machine to their latest album Sonic Ranch, their discography is an endless supply of pop riches. I had the opportunity to chat with Austin rock duo The Caughtery. Formed in 2020, The Caughtery is long-time Austin music veterans Lisa Tingle and David Gayler, whose contemporary rock output is influenced by musical threads running from the 60s through current. Their 2022 debut EP "The Caughtery" presents a series of “musical paintings”, expressing the pressure and fragility of the human state over the last few years. In September of 2023, they released "The Rain Song," paying tribute to Led Zeppelin, produced and recorded by David Gayler and mixed by legendary producer Tim Palmer (Pearl Jam, Tin Machine, U2, Ozzy Osbourne, HIM, The Mission), who also worked with Robert Plant on his '"Shaken n Stirred" solo album. "This is one of Led Zeppelin's most beautiful songs. A beautiful ballad legendarily created based on George Harrison's belief and comments to the band members that Led Zeppelin needed to compose more ballads. Mr. Plant and Page apparently took that to heart and created this masterpiece," says Lisa Tingle. Lisa Tingle has received multiple honors at the Austin Music Awards (Female Vocalist of the Year, Band of the Year, Best Song, Musician of the Year, Album of the Year), and has toured / performed with legends such as Etta James, Stevie Ray Vaughan's Double Trouble, Eric Johnson, Stephen Bruton, Monte Montgomery and Marcia Ball. David Gayler is a multi-instrumentalist, producer, songwriter and studio owner based in Spicewood, Texas. Having moved here from New York in the mid-80s, Gayler has been in various bands over the years, opening for such notable artists as The Romantics, Charlie Sexton and Jerry Jeff Walker, and was also a member of the Party Band during MTVs journey down to Texas in the late 1980s.What is the Caughtery ?"Cutting or making new sound but cauterizing it and sealing it as you go along the path." For some, the process of making music can appear effortless. For others, bringing one's music to life might take decades. The music welling up in the heart and mind of its creator, like a fine wine, or in this case, one of the finest debut albums, by any artist, in any genre, in many decades. One could say that Tommy Taylor has one of those classic “you don't know me, but you've heard me” musician stories. He has spent years as the drummer and backing vocalist behind singer/songwriter (Grammy and Oscar winner) Christopher Cross and guitarist Eric Johnson. Tommy has also played behind: Stevie Ray Vaughan, Charlie Sexton, Will Sexton, Sara Hickman, Charlie and Bruce Robison, Kelly Willis, Jake Andrews, Jerry Jeff Walker, Ray Benson and Shawn Colvin.Tommy has been preparing himself and his music for years to become the album Across The Stars. It is a recording comprised of what Taylor calls “Chekovian vignettes” - nine cinematic stories filtered through a lifetime of insights and emotions, delivered in his tenor voice that falls somewhere between the lilt of Jackson Browne's and the edge of Don Henley. Taylor's lyrics are incredibly personal and incredibly universal simultaneously. Who hasn't felt like the people in your life were there to “Let You Down?” Taylor describes himself as an observer. However, the songs on this album are filled with the stories and experience you get by living - not by watching. At the end of the 9 songs, you are left with a man's personal catharsis, and you are the richer for having had the experience. After years of his friends and colleagues encouraging Tommy to write his songs and get them recorded, Taylor finally went in the studio and started work on the album. With a little help from Christopher Cross, legendary record producer and keyboardist Michael Omartian (Christopher Cross, Donna Summer, Rod Stewart, Amy Grant, Steely Dan, Glen Campbell, Boz Scaggs, Jerry Garcia and Dolly Parton) agreed to play on Tommy's album. After finishing his work and hearing the final mixes Michael said: “Man, this is a really good album. Everything sounds great. Wonderful songs and the overall production and musicianship is first rate.” That was on top of praise for Taylor's vocals on various tracks, and his declaration that the song “Everybody's Gonna Let You Down” “sounds like a smash.” You might catch yourself singing along to that chorus the very first time you hear it.Michael Omartian's words are a priceless endorsement, especially for an artist whose debut work has taken a few decades to arrive. But in his Across The Stars liner notes, Taylor explains, “This first effort is a culmination of a lifetime of personal ups and downs, and interests and pursuits.” Isn't that a perfect description of a life well-lived? This week we're back in 1983! Kornflake shares a goofy 1983 commercial for Dial soap, while Kevin takes an absurdly quick look at the pop music of 1983. It was the year new wave conquered the Top 40, and we approved. (For more complete coverage of 1983 music, we refer you to recent episodes of White Rocket Entertainment and Modern Musicology. While the Flopcast covers Kajagoogoo, they take care of everything else.) We also stopped by Northeast Comic Con (aka Music Con) and saw members of the Monkees (Micky), the Runaways (Cherie), the Ramones (Richie), and the Stompers (Sal)! A Monkees cover band called Zilch was there too, as well as old friend of The Flopcast (and, as Flash Gordon, savior of the universe) Sam J. Jones! Plus: A concert report on Elvis Costello and the Imposters (along with Charlie Sexton) and Nick Lowe (along with his Mexican wrestling-masked backup band Los Straitjackets). And best of all, Happy Birthday to America's 1980s sweetheart, Phoebe Cates! Celebrate by watching Private School. It's not Phoebe's best movie, but it is Phoebe's 1983 movie. A bunch of 1983 commercials! (Dial soap ad is at 6:50) White Rocket Entertainment: Music of 1983! Modern Musicology: Music of 1983 Part 1 and Part 2! And our regular links... The Flopcast website! F.T.W (1994) also known as The Last Ride. Rundown of fairly unknown, quite interesting cowboy drama with Mickey Rourke as rodeo maestro Frank T. Wells trying to live a normal life after a stint in jail for a crime he did not commit. Frank also falls in love with an unlikely, unhinged individual played by Footloose, Short Cuts talent, Lori Singer. Iconic, Brion James also stars, as does Peter Berg, and an array of musicians including Charlie Sexton.

On May 10, 2022, the Bob Dylan Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma opened its doors. This episode delivers a comprehensive overview and review of the Center and the events surrounding its opening. The weekly news segment “20 Pounds of Headlines” covers the May 5 Grand Opening Reception and Dinner at the Oklahoma Museum of Popular Culture, delivers the sad news of the passing of a fellow traveler, updates you on Dylan's spring and early summer touring itinerary, informs you about the results from RR Auction's auctioning of Dylan's 1960 manuscript POEMS WITHOUT TITLES, informs you about the recording of THE GIRL FROM THE NORTH COUNTRY'S production, describes the new Dylan sculpture, RAIL CAR, revealed at Château La Coste in Provence, France, and, of course, wishes Bob Dylan a happy birthday and many years. In "Who Did It Better?" we ask you to tell us who did "I Threw It All Away" better: Bob Dylan in 1978 or Elvis Costello and the Imposters (along with Dylan's former guitarist Charlie Sexton) at Cain's Ballroom on May 7, 2022 while celebrating the opening of the Bob Dylan Center? Go to our Twitter page @RainTrains to vote! PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS EPISODE WAS RECORDED UPON MY RETURN FROM TULSA, ON MAY 20, AND I INTENDED TO BROADCAST IT EARLIER THAN IT WAS BROADCAST, BUT THE ASSEMBLING OF THE SHOW TOOK LONGER THAN EXPECTED, THEREFORE SOME OF THE REFERENCES TO DATES, SUCH AS DYLAN'S MAY 24 BIRTHDAY ARE MADE AS IF THE EVENT HAD NOT YET HAPPENED.

What is it about Texas and it's reputation for gunslingin' killer guitar players? You know the old cliche' "something in the water?", well, this certainly applies to the Lone Star State...think of the guitarists that have emerged from here- Stevie Ray and Jimmie Vaughn, Eric Johnson, Billy Gibbons, David Holt, Charlie Sexton, and newer cats like Carter Arrington- etc..but way up at the top of that list is my guest today- Mr. David Grissom. A veteran of the John Mellencamp band, Joe Ely, Storyville and the Dixie Chicks, he's also appeared on many records as a session player and songwriter. I've known David for a long time as you'll hear- we toured together for a few months in the late 90's with BB King when I was in the Neville Brothers and he was in Storyville. In this interview we talk early days in Austin, string bending, influences, gear, Mellencamp, Lloyd Maines and steel guitar as an influence, Norman Blake, Ringo Starr, solo records etc...and much more. Couple of great little jams in here too! On a nice day in Austin I got in an Uber from the hotel and headed over to David's studio where we did this interview. Hope you enjoy! Andy King doesn t like to describe his job as "hacking up children." As an orthopedic surgeon and the pardon the pun head of the spine unit at Children s Hospital in New Orleans, Andy is good naturedly circumspect about how he describes using mechanical instruments on kids backs. As a New Zealander, he s a lot less sensitive to his description of Australians. Bridget Kelly is a 7th generation New Orleanian whose son, August, is an 8th generation New Orleanian, and whose husband Aaron not Erin was faking buying a baguette at the Cresecnt City Farmers Market when Bridget met him for the first time after seeing him across a restaurant the night before while discussing Mork n Mindy s offsrpring and declaring she was going to marry him. Even in a small town of bizarre goings on and on a cocktail drinking show that is, frankly, a gathering ground for crazy stories this romantic tale stands out. So much so that Andrew Duhon is contemplating a cross cultural yoga centric reconnaissance of the Uptown Farmers Market on Tuesdays. If you re there on a Tuesday Andrew is the guy with the sitar waiting for the yoga teacher with the New Zealand passport. If you re taking bets on which New Orleans band whose new record is produced by Bob Dylan s guitar player Charlie Sexton is most likely to bust out of the city and make a nationwide name for themselves, put your money on The Cardinal Sons. God fearing honest to god brothers from Jackson, Mississippi, John, Joe, and Dave Shirley s older brother, Daniel, who is not in the band, started out running around the house flapping his hands and singing before realizing he could corral his brothers into learning instruments to back him which could dispense with the incessant circumlocution of the dwelling and hand flapping. Daniel lives in New York and is is an opera singer but if you want to place another bet, put it on him showing up here some day to set the record straight. Although nobody at Happy Hour has done any research shocker to back this up, we re going to go out on a limb and claim this is almost certainly the only New Orleans podcast that contains cursing, a hymn, a serious and definitive explanation of why New Orleans has potholes, and a hypothesis of how Jesus was born in the year 1 A.D. The photos on this page were taken at Casa Borrega by Nadine Wu and Douglas Engel. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
