“Começo a escrever.

Becoming Modigliani (Rake Press, 2024) is a comprehensive biography that delves into the troubled life of the Jewish-Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani.; Written by Dr. Henri Colt, an internationally recognized lung specialist, the book examines the artist's legend and Modigliani's creative journey from a medical perspective, from his birth in Livorno, Italy, to his tragic death in a paupers' hospital in Paris at the age of thirty-five, presumably from tuberculous meningitis. Becoming Modigliani sheds light on the young man's chronic illnesses, addictions, and relationships with friends and lovers as he navigated the vibrant yet challenging world of early twentieth-century Bohemian Paris. Beginning with "Modi's" birth in 1884, the narrative is divided into five parts, seamlessly blending biographical elements with medical insights and a critical analysis of Modigliani's work among some of the greatest artists of the time. It also provides thoughtful descriptions of a changing society governed by the impact of infectious diseases, war, and a flourishing of other creative geniuses such as Picasso, Jean Cocteau, and Guillaume Apollinaire. With thirty-seven virtually standalone chapters, a preface and epilogue, three appendices, and a rich array of illustrations and references, this biography promises a profound and compassionate exploration of Modigliani's embattled world. In Becoming Modigliani, Dr. Colt's aim is to foster empathy and greater understanding by unraveling the intricate layers of Modigliani's existence. The result is a captivating and deeply researched tale that will resonate with a diverse audience of serious readers, art and medical history enthusiasts, sociologists, and anyone interested in the human spirit. This back to school season, we're bringing back some of our favorite Womanica episodes you might have missed. Today's Womanican is Lee Miller (1907-1977). She was legendary for her beauty, which was captured on film by Jean Cocteau, painted by Pablo Picasso, and photographed by Man Ray. However, she was also a talented photographer, writer, and one of the only female war correspondents to be credentialed during World War II. For Further Reading: Harriet Martineau The Victorian Woman Writer Who Refused to Let Doctors Define Her Harriet Martineau (1802-1876) This month, we're heading back to school – and we're taking you along with us!

Chronique Economique

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 16, 2024 4:25

Mots-Clés : diagnostics, track record, lamentable, Jean-Claude Trichet, augmenter, crise financière, madame, Lagarde, inflation forte, Europe, rebond, économie, Post-covid, négatif, invasion, Ukraine, équipe, provisoire, retard, souci, brutale, rapide, économie européenne, résultat, choc énergétique, trop plein d'activités, zone euro, baisse des prix, énergie, Jean Cocteau, instigateurs, expression, général, mourant.

Stokes, Henry Scott. "The Life and Death of Yukio Mishima". Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 1974. 2.

Arch Brown, an amateur photographer turned incidental filmmaker first came to broad public attention through his films. During gay liberation's first decade, Brown's homoerotic films achieved an international following garnering amazing reviews.Fellow filmmaker and producer, Jack Deveau, entrusted Brown with a surreal film which has been compared to the works of Jean-Luc Godard, Federico Fellini, Luis Buñuel and Jean Cocteau. So what is  Arch Brown's The Night Before trying to tell us?Dick Fisk was one of the most famous faces of gay erotica in the mid to late 1970's and onward into the early 1980's. He was manly, oozed sexuality and confidence and….that mustache. He appeared in only a handful of magazines and movies but his iconic look made him Falcon Studios first "instant" superstar. In this episode we are going to celebrate Arch Brown, a filmmaker who would become a master craftsman and philanthropist after leaving the corporate world behind, his film, The Night Before, a beautifully crafted film that was on Variety's 50 top-grossing film's list in the nation for five weeks. And finally we will celebrate Dick Fisk, the archetypal Castro clone with the perfect physique and generous endowment whose contributions to the gay adult entertainment industry still resonate with his admirers today. Support the show

There are works of weird fiction that dispense their strangeness so subtly that many readers never pick up on it, books that allow themselves to be pass for mundane, the better to haunt us after we put them down. Donna Tartt's debut novel The Secret History, published in 1992, is such a work. On the surface, it is a brilliant, yet completely naturalistic, telling of the lead-up and aftermath of a murder. But The Secret History is also a work of the depths, and readers who go in seeking the Weird will find it lurking on every page. More than a masterpiece of psychological exploration, it is a story about the resurgence of the old god Dionysus, and a chronicle of fate; fate conceived, in the manner of the Ancient Greeks, as a cosmic force.
