Our latest guest is Martin Popoff who is the author of over 100 books on hard rock, heavy metal, classic rock and record collecting , bringing both archival depth and fan-first storytelling. Today we are speaking with Martin about his new book: "KISS '76". KISS was formed in 1973, and was one of the hardest-working bands in rock, releasing three studio albums and their breakthrough Alive! album in 1974, setting the stage for a true breakthough into superstardom. Fifty years on, Marting frames the band's nonstop momentum in 1976 - two landmark studio albums, a relentless touring schedule, and the birth of the KISS Army fan club. Written with the fan's eye and the historian's rigor, KISS '76 follows the band around the world into the studio, paring the detailed album analysis with on-the-road reportage and archival discoveries. As Martin puts it in the prolougue, "This is the Story of 1976 by someone with way too much KISS on the brain", A voice that gives the book its affectionate, insider engergy while nebver losing sight of the year's bigger picture. KISS fans spend a lot of time trying to understand decisions made by members of the band. But in the past couple of months Vinnie Vincent has gone out of his way to confuse and anger some members of the KISS ARMY. This week we ask what is going on with Vinnie Vincent?
Ever since compact discs came out in the mid-1980s, the concept of SIDE 1 and SIDE 2 on an album sort of fell by the wayside. And with this new quantum leap in technology, the entire process of consuming music began to transform. By the late 80's and early 90's, CD sales began outselling vinyl records and cassette tapes, due in large part to convenience and technological innovation, as vinyl records (albums) were limited to a maximum of 20 minutes or so per side and cassette tapes maxed out at around 30 minutes per side. But prior to compact discs, consuming music was (at a minimum) a two-step process which involved inserting the cassette into your tape deck and pressing play or placing the album on your turntable and dropping the needle to begin your music enjoyment experience. With the advent of compact discs, the maximum recording space jumped to 74 minutes, far exceeding the limitations of records and tapes, and bonus: you didn't have to flip anything over and repeat the process as all of the album tracks were included on one side (so to speak) as one complete, seamless work that systematically eliminated the technologically imposed intermission which required ejecting the cassette or removing the stylus from the album and flipping it over to SIDE TWO, as a CD version of an album quickly became a singular entity devoid of one side or another and just became one complete work (think Reign In Blood on cassette, where both sides are repeated). In the case of a near perfect album, sides didn't really matter, but what we've come to notice over the years is that SIDE TWO would sometimes be superior to SIDE ONE. Granted, this is not by any means an exact science nor is it always a guarantee, but many of the finest albums in metal history have a SIDE TWO that is much better than SIDE ONE. So, with that in mind, we invite you to JOIN US as we go through a few of our favorites to determine whether or not there is any validity to the claim that SIDE TWO IS BETTER THAN SIDE ONE. So much happened to KISS between the years 1979 and 1981. Dynasty in 79, Unmasked in 80 and Music from the Elder and Killers in 81. Then there is lineup changes. Peter Criss is out Eric Carr is in. Ace Frehley is getting ready to leave. You could right a paper on the music changes, and even the way the band looked went through a huge change. This could be the most controversial era for the band. Fans started to think the band left the KISS ARMY behind. Let's look at this era and talk about the music the look and the attitude of the era.

In 1976, everything changed for KISS.After years of grinding it out on the road, the band suddenly exploded into a full-blown phenomenon — sold-out arenas, the rise of the KISS Army, merchandising everywhere, and a level of fan hysteria rock had rarely seen. This wasn't just success… it was a takeover. The question is: why did it all happen in that one year?In this episode, we break down the perfect storm — 'Destroyer', 'Rock & Roll Over', non-stop touring, the mythology, the image, and the moment when KISS truly became The Hottest Band in the Land.Featuring an interview with Martin Popoff, author of Kiss '76: Twelve Months That Defined the Hottest Band in the Land, who walks us through the chaos, strategy, and timing that turned a cult band into a cultural phenomenon overnight. If you want to understand when KISS stopped being a band… and became an institution — this is the year.Purchase a copy of KISS '76: Twelve Months That Defined the Hottest Band in the LandVisit MartinPopoff.com----------
In the first half of this episode, we sit down with Nick from Pod of Thunder for a fascinating conversation about podcasting, nostalgia, and Canadian music legends. We kick things off discussing an intriguing podcast concept about screenwriting based on album tracks before diving into memories of obscure 70s TV shows and how YouTube has transformed from a platform for random content into a nostalgia powerhouse and instructional video library. The conversation takes an interesting turn as we explore AI technology—both its benefits and pitfalls. Nick shares a story about AI providing completely incorrect information, while we discuss how AI can be useful for tasks like product reviews. We also talk about the importance of family in podcasting, with Nick sharing stories about his mom's involvement in Pod of Thunder. We explore how COVID-19 changed podcasting forever by normalizing virtual recording and remote guests, comparing our different setups (StreamYard vs. Zoom) and discussing the evolution of podcast equipment over the years. The highlight of the episode is our deep dive into Nardwuar the Human Serviette, the legendary Canadian music interviewer known for his eccentric persona and encyclopedic knowledge of bands. We watch clips of his iconic interviews with KISS and Divine, discuss his unique interviewing style, and celebrate his upcoming induction into the Order of Canada. Nick also introduces us to Norman Gunston, another character-based interviewer, and his hilarious KISS parody album "Kiss Army."We wrap up this segment with discussions about family-friendly entertainment, video games like Roblox and Minecraft, and some memorable concert experiences.Linktree: https://linktr.ee/seangeekpodcastPatreon: https://www.patreon.com/c/meetthegeeksWe are a part of the Boneless Podcast Network: https://boneless-catalogue-player.lovable.app/Merch: Tee Public: https://www.teepublic.com/seangeekpodcastRed Bubble: https://www.redbubble.com/people/seangeekpodcast/shop@seangeekpodcast on Twitter, Instagram and FacebookMentioned in this episode:New Merch AdAn ad that incorporates Red Bubble and Tee Public

This week, Miles Nolte waves his tree flag at all the people matching the Christmas hatch, we buy dolls off a sniper after almost possibly going fishing, pit Pokemon against Gene Simmons during a hardwater meltdown, and unleash the thunderclap on unsuspecting children that cannot sing or handle guitar lessons.
It is with heavy hearts that we present this week's episode as a tribute to Paul Daniel "Ace" Frehley. The rock 'n' roll icon, legendary guitar god, and former KISS guitarist, passed away on October 16, 2025, after suffering a fall in his home studio weeks earlier. Kevin has a profound connection to KISS and Ace as a lifelong fan and proud member of the KISS Army. While not an obscure artist by any means (the Rock & Roll Hall of Famer had 10 gold records, 5 multi-platinum records with KISS, and a platinum solo album), the duo tries to share some lesser-known songs, including a few crazy guest appearances. Excuse Kevin's extensive ramblings about the great Space Ace, but this loss was hard, and the tribute is necessary. Ace was a true character, who played a character, and played with character. A genuine original. A true rock star.New to InObscuria? Typically, what we do is exhume obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. In the case of this particular episode, we are leaning towards the FORGOTTEN. Although a member of a band that holds the RIAA distinction of having the most gold-certified albums overall by any American band is hardly forgotten… In any case, we are paying tribute to one of the greatest guitarists of all time! Rest In Peace, Ace. There will never be another like you!Songs this week include:Criss – “Bad Attitude (feat. Ace Frehley)” from Cat #1(1994)Anton Fig – “Know Where You Go (feat. Ace Frehley & Sebastian Bach)” from Figments (2002)Ace Frehley – “The Girl Can't Dance” from The Girl Can't Dance Demo (1983)Wendy O. Williams – “Bump And Grind” from W.O.W. (1984)Ace Frehley & Kris Randall – “Rise Up (Back From The Grave)” from Rise Up (Back From The Grave) - Single (2014)Chris Cassone – “Never Too Hot (with Ace Frehley)” from The BBQ All Stars (2013)ESP – “Foxy Lady” from Lost And Spaced (1998)Satin – “The Magic Kiss Medley” from Gods Of Thunder: A Norwegian Tribute To KISS (2005)Please subscribe everywhere that you listen to podcasts!Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://x.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it: InObscuria StoreIf you'd like to check out Kevin's band THE SWEAR, take a listen on all streaming services or pick up a digital copy of their latest release here: https://theswear.bandcamp.com/If you want to hear Robert and Kevin's band from the late 90s – early 00s BIG JACK PNEUMATIC, check it out here: https://bigjackpnuematic.bandcamp.com/Check out Robert's amazing fire sculptures and metal workings here: http://flamewerx.com/

Aziz Huq, author of The Collapse of Constitutional Remedies, explains how liability insurers shape policing in small towns, why “rights versus rights” conflicts—from same-sex marriage to police brutality—often hinge on public trust, and how Chicago's low murder clearance rate reflects deep distrust of law enforcement. He analyzes the Supreme Court's Grants Pass ruling on homelessness, arguing that its “status versus conduct” distinction masks moral judgments about choice and responsibility. Plus, Trump's Kennedy Center Honorees include KISS, Gloria Gaynor, George Strait, Michael Crawford, and Sylvester Stallone—prompting thoughts on merchandising, coffin diplomacy, and the Kiss Army. Rob's other channel is all about his vast music collection spanning various genres from Rock, Metal, to POP and some Country, and to Jazz and just about anything else! yes most of the channel is rock and metal... not worries there.... but... that does not mean Barry Manilow might not pop up too haha. This week we talk about the news of the week as well as What did Gene say about the upcoming KISS VEGAS weekend.
This week Tom & Zeus review the latest Off The Soundboard KISS release, KISS Off The Soundboard San Antonio 1985. This live album was recorded during the Asylum tour which featured a non makeup KISS. This is the 6th Off The Soundboard release by KISS and this one had the longest time delay between the previous Off The Soundboard release and therefore was highly anticipated. Released only on vinyl on KISS' website with controversial merchandise and on CD only in Japan, the album release had issues with the KISS Army. It is the first official live album featuring beloved KISS guitarist, Bruce Kulick. The album does include Asylum album songs, like Tears Are Falling and Uh! All Night, but is also filled with the most 80's Paul Stanley stage banter you can imagine. This is SIOL's 11th live album review. The guy's breakdown the album, the tracks and of course Paul Stanley's outrageous stage banter as well. They list their top 5 favorite tracks and rank the cover (we know) and the album against the 10 live albums by KISS that were previously reviewed. So take a trip to Thighland and go "Uhhhhh!" On the 95th Episode of Dorm Damage With Tom & Zeus the guys welcome the legendary Johnny Brennan of the Jerky Boys. To say the Jerky Boys had an influence on Tom & Zeus and Shout It Out Loudcast, would be an understatement. From their freshman year at college when Tom & Zeus met, the Jerky Boys humor had an immediate impact on the boys. The incredible humor of the Jerky Boys is all over Shout It Out Loudcast. From the opening line, "Hellooo, hey what's up there KISS Army" to the "You Doooo" & "Star?" and so much more. The guys break down everything Jerky Boys with the legendary Johnny Brennan. A conversation beyond the guy's imagination. Tune in to what may be the greatest episode in all of Shout It Out Loudcast history!
