In this episode of LDS Discussions, we explore how BYU Professor Anthony Sweat's artwork reflects the troubling aspects of church history found in the CES Letter by Jeremy Runnells. Despite being excommunicated for questioning the church, Runnells' CES Letter, published in 2013, exposes discrepancies in the official narrative. Meanwhile, Sweat's art, starting in 2014, delves into controversial topics like Joseph Smith's treasure digging, the use of a seer stone, and polygamy. We compare Sweat's paintings to the CES Letter's criticisms, highlighting how the church's history is often presented inaccurately. Join us as we discuss these bold portrayals and the ongoing tension between church teachings and historical truth. ___________________ At Mormon Stories we explore, celebrate, and challenge Mormon culture through in-depth stories told by members and former members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as well as scholars, authors, LDS apologists, and other professionals. Our overall mission is to: 1. Facilitate informed consent amongst LDS Church members, investigators, and non-members regarding Mormon history, doctrine, and theology 2. Support Mormons (and members of other high-demand religions) who are experiencing a religious faith crisis 3. Promote healing, growth and community for those who choose to leave the LDS Church or other high demand religions

"There's very logical reasons to be members of the church, and very logical reasons to believe in a higher power --something beyond that's bigger than us, that has a spiritual aspect. This isn't irrational, this is rational. And so once you can get back into realizing that belief is reasonable, then you can ask the questions that will truly give you a testimony through prayer and study and pondering those primary answers we hear all the time. I talk about the heart and the head. I believe that we can, and should, have knowledge in our heart, feeling emotion, yearning for God, along with rationality and reason. For me, the church of Jesus Christ of Latter -day Saints is God's true and living church on the earth. I know that in my heart and I know it in my head. I have both of those. I think critics have had their way for a long time trying to convince people that there's no reason to have a rational testimony. But the 'Light and Truth Letter,' it's showing that it is reasonable -- and rational to believe, there's a lot of space for belief. My hope is that if you're struggling and you're a believing member, but having doubts -- If that's the case for you and you're telling yourself, there's no way the church could be true. That's not you talking. That's the critic parroting. You're parroting a critic, because there's lots of reasons to believe. I try to lay it all out in the 'Light and Truth Letter.' To show all of the positive evidences that there are for the church and that it's actually really rational and reasonable to believe. There is a preponderance of evidence that is more for us than against us. And for me -- that's enough to believe. And once I made that decision, then God could do something with me." https://www.lightandtruthletter.org/ Come Back Team: Director, Founder & Host: Ashly Stone Producer and Senior Editor: Lauren Rose Outreach Manager: Jenna Carlson Editor: Michelle Berger Art Director: Jeremy Garcia

Today we are joined with Sandra Tanner to discuss Mormon historian, Richard Bushman's recent response to the CES Letter. Bushman's response was on the topic of the translation of the Book of Mormon. Did Joseph Smith really use a seer stone? Is the author of the CES Letter, Jeremy Runnells, wrong for feeling betrayed by the church? Did the church really hide that Joseph Smith had and used a seer stone to translate their most sacred text? Join us to find out these answers! "How I handle things when I have questions is I do my own studying and I look at things from different sides, but I always lean on Heavenly Father, I always keep Him in the loop. I always tell Him what I am questioning, what I am struggling with and He always points me to sources that help. Sometimes it takes a while, the answers don't always come right away. But He always points me to something that helps me understand things or helps me feel at peace about it even if I don't fully understand it." https://www.fairlatterdaysaints.org/answers/Sarah_Allen_CES_Response_Posts https://www.plantwhys.com/free-1-week-meal-guide

Alex shares about his life growing up in the LDS church, the "shelf" items that finally led to his deconversion, some fascinating ways that Mormonism is similar to mainstream evangelical Xtianity a whole lot more! As Mormons, one of the things we constantly get beat over the head with by pseudo-intellectuals is this argument "well if the Book of Mormon is an account of historical events where is the evidence? Now if you will excuse me I need to get back to reading this inspired piece of holy writ known as the CES Letter '' Well today you are going to get some facts that you can use to defend the historicity of the Book of Mormon. Ken Peterson joins me again where we will break down evidence in support of the historicity of the Book of Mormon using these 5 disciplines. Those are: 1. Archeology 2. Linguistics 3. Geographic 4. Geological 5. Cultural. Now you may not agree with where Ken believes the Book of Mormon took place but as Ken and I breakdown evidence from all five of these categories I think you will see that as believers in the Book of Mormon we have every reason to be assured that the accounts in the Book of Mormon. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/dave-kirkenbower/support
In this Part 2 of 3, we return to Jeff & Larissa's story. Now married, Larissa gives up her University Studies to help Jeff through Med school. They share their struggles with infertility, the adoption process, and adopting black children as orthodox Mormons. Larissa faces difficulties in early motherhood and building resentment as they settle into traditional LDS gender roles. Larissa feels she is losing herself wrapped up in her husband's life, while at the same time trying to silence that part of her that is unhappy, seeing it as "wrong." Larissa is called as a RS President, even as she becomes more vocally progressive/feminist and has hope for the Church to change, but it doesn't last. Jeff realizes the Gospel can't fix Larissa's unhappiness as the root cause is Patriarchy. He serves in Bishoprics for 7 years before discovering more about Church history from the CES Letter, and Rough Stone Rolling, with the Gospel Topics Essays being the final straw. Jeff & Larissa finally recognize the level of harm of systemic racism & sexism in Mormonism and no longer wish to be a part of it. Episode Show Notes Mormon Stories Thanks Our Generous Donors! In this episode of Religion Today, host Martin Tanner gives advice on responding to critics. Most issues and questions posed by critics will be answered and resolved over time. Others by immediate research. Others by understanding the fallacy or false assumption which underlies the criticism. One example is that in some places the CES Letter criticizes the quotes of Isaiah in the Book of Mormon, saying they are identical and thus stolen from the King James Version. In other places the CES Letter criticizes the Book of Mormon for changing slightly the wording of Isaiah quotes. Critics can't have it both ways. Another example is the CES Letter's claim there could not possibly have been enough people in Meso-America as the Book of Mormon claims. But Lidar research in just the last few years proves the Yucatan Peninsula had about 20 million or more living there during Book of Mormon times, more than in Europe at that time. Will this critic retract? Not so far. Time and research resolve criticisms. Keep your faith.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
In today's episode, we continue with the CES Letter and the section on the Kinderhook plates and translation claims. This section of the CES letter focuses on Joseph Smith's ability to translate. After translating the Book of Mormon, Joseph acquired various different artifacts of what appeared to be ancient writing and attempted to translate these. Some of these artifacts ended up being hoaxes while others appear to say different things than Joseph claimed. Are the scholars wrong? Was Joseph translating these literally or just using them as inspiration? Is this a sign that Joseph Smith may not have been as inspired as he claimed? How does that change what we believe? After a bit of an unplanned break, we're back! In today's episode, we circle back to the CES Letter and the section on Prophets. Does a prophet always speak for God? If not, how can you tell when he is and when he isn't? Does it matter? There is an oft repeated quote from Wilford Woodruff that says, "The Lord will never permit me or any other man who stands as President of this Church to lead you astray." This belief sets us up to believe that you don't need to wrestle with difficult choices, or dilemmas, as long as you follow the prophet. Do you agree? How does that balance play out in your life? Finally what roles if any do prophets play in your life? As always we hope you enjoy the discussion and we would love to hear your thoughts. In today's episode, we finish our discussion of the CES Letter section on polygamy. What danger is there from assuming that good outcomes means something is from God and bad outcomes means it was from Satan? Do the later doctrinal developments such as polygamy clash with the first vision, translation of the Book of Mormon and other early revelations? Could polygamy have been a mistake? Do we ignore more troubling aspects of polygamy because we don't know how to handle it? Is there a chance that Joseph was a fallen prophet? How do we take the lessons of the past and apply them to the present so we don't repeat the same mistakes? As always we hope you enjoy the discussion and we would love to hear your thoughts. In today's episode, we continue discussing the CES Letter, specifically the section regarding Polygamy. What comes to mind when you hear that so and so was a polygamist? What does marriage/sealing mean to you? Are they similar and how do they differ? Does it matter? Do we ignore more troubling aspects of polygamy because we don't know how to handle it? How can we deal with this history? Is it possible that maybe the early saints had misunderstandings that led to the institution of polygamy? Does the knowledge that Joseph practiced polygamy impact your testimony at all? We ended up going deeper than expected into the topic so we split this episode into 2 parts. In today's episode, we continue discussing the CES Letter, specifically the sections about the Book of Abraham translation. What are we to make of the fact that the characters on the papyri do not match the translation given by Joseph Smith? Does it matter? What was meant by translation if it was not the typical translation we think of? Should we still count it as scripture? How can we deal with that? How can we as members better prepare ourselves to receive information that can change the way we view history or cause some cognitive dissonance? Can we find value in a text if it is not 100% historical? As always we hope you enjoy the discussion and we would love to hear your thoughts. Today we discuss section 3 of the CES letter: The First Vision. Did you know there are 4 different accounts of the first vision? In today's episode, we continue discussing the CES Letter, specifically the sections about the Book of Mormon translation. Why were the gold plates needed if they weren't used in the translation? How does showing this image contribute to how the overall history is perceived? Should the church be more open with its past/history than it is? If so, how? How does the terminology that we use to describe differing aspects of experience create issues? How can we deal with that? How can we as members better prepare ourselves to receive information that can change the way we view history or cause some cognitive dissonance? In today's episode, we begin discussing the CES Letter, specifically the sections about the Book of Mormon. What is the distinction between historical truth and spiritual truth? Why does it matter?
