Nicole and Diana discuss Levi Richards' journal account of Joseph Smith's First Vision. Nicole shares her personal connection to Levi Richards, who is her husband's 4th-great-granduncle and the brother of Willard Richards. They talk about Levi's life, his mission to England, and his role as a physician. They then focus on Levi's journal and its significance as a historical source, specifically the 11 June 1843 entry where Levi recorded Joseph Smith's testimony about the First Vision. Nicole and Diana compare Levi's account to other sources, including Joseph Smith's journal and the Nauvoo Neighbor newspaper, and they analyze the details of the meeting. Listeners will learn about the different accounts of Joseph Smith's First Vision, including the one recorded in Levi Richards' journal. They will also learn about the importance of Levi's journal as a firsthand historical source and how to analyze historical documents. In Her Image: Finding Heavenly Mother in Scripture, Scholarship, the Arts, & Everyday Life
In this episode of In Her Image, we continue our inspiring conversation with Maxine. We dive deeper into her personal journey, the challenges she has faced, and the wisdom she has gained along the way. Maxine shares powerful insights on faith, resilience, and the importance of embracing one's divine identity. She shares her research from a paper she presented in 2020 on the influence of women on Joseph Smith's early spiritual journey and Heavenly Mother in the early church. Maxine's paper, including these fascinating stories and facts from history, has yet to be published. We are privileged to hear them from her here! Together, we explore themes of self-discovery, personal revelation, and how women can find strength in their spiritual paths. Maxine discusses the interplay between LDS feminism, gender and sexuality, and how/who should define the Divine Feminine in the restored church. She opens up about pivotal moments in her life that shaped her perspective and how she has learned to trust in the Divine.

Our Mothers Knew It with Maria EckersleyA Creative Study of Come, Follow MeD&C [D&C 2; JSH 1:27-65]“The Hearts of the Children Shall Turn to Their Fathers”January 20 – January 26, 2025WEEK 04 SUMMARY=================Lesson Summary:Doctrine and Covenants 2 reveals the prophecy that Elijah will return before the great day of the Lord to restore priesthood authority, turning the hearts of the fathers to the children and vice versa. In "Joseph Smith—History" 1:27–65, Joseph Smith details his experiences from receiving the First Vision, his persecutions, youthful mistakes, and the visitations of the angel Moroni, who instructs him about the Book of Mormon plates. Moroni repeatedly visits Joseph, explaining the importance of the plates and the role Joseph is to play. Joseph faces persecution and challenges as he prepares to fulfill his divine calling and eventually gains possession of the plates, beginning the translation process with the help of others like Martin Harris, who confirms the authenticity of the characters with scholars. The narrative highlights Joseph's faith, trials, and the miraculous support he receives in his prophetic mission. This week we are learning about the first vision of Joseph Smith. January 13–19: “I Saw a Pillar of Light”Joseph Smith History Joseph Smith is the Prophet of the Restoration.Joseph Smith was prepared to be a prophet of God.We will also learn from Joseph Smiths first vision in the sacred grove, a pattern of prayer that we can follow to get answers ourselves. WE can follow the pattern Joseph showed us during his life, a pattern of prayer! Joseph said he was twelve when he started thinking about which church he should join. He had the first vision when he was 14. So this wasn't a question he figured the answer to in a day, a week, or a month. For our pattern of prayer, to be like Joseph, we should know that sometimes answers to our questions can take time. Joseph tells us when he was trying to decide which church to join, he was so young that he could not come to any certain conclusion and needed wisdom from god since he did not know how to act. For our pattern of prayer, to be like Joseph, we need to make sure we gather all the information we can and then go to God. Joseph said he spent time in serious reflection. When we need help, do we spent time pondering solutions? If you want help on a test, you've got to study, - you can't just pray for an A and not do your part and expect God to help. Joseph said he attended all the different meetings as often as he could. He was doing his divine homework! Joseph made a decision, he chose which church he thought was best, then he that decision to God to see if it was right. Often Heavenly Father expects us to make the best choice we can and then ask him to confirm if it is the right choice. Joseph went somewhere where he could be unrushed and uninterrupted with God.If you follow this pattern of prayer, and try to be like Joseph, we testify that you will be able to say the same thing to your mom that Joseph said to his right after he went home after having had the first vision…I have learned for myself Remember in the beginning Joseph didn't know what to do? He was so confused. But in studying and praying like Joseph we testify you will be able to say all is well, i know for myself. Some background music was written by Daniel Sacks and taken from the church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints hymn book.

In this episode Kerry interviews Robin Jensen from the Church History Department of the Church. Together they explore what it means to receive revelation from God, and how God worked with Joseph Smith as He revealed truths to His children. They talk about what that would have looked like for the early Saints. They delve into the simultaneously sacred and mundane nature of God speaking to His prophet, and how important it is that God does speak to prophets. They investigate the intimate nature of revelations, and the process of them becoming public. They speak about how this process applies to us in our personal revelation. They show how what we learn about Joseph receiving revelation echoes our own lives and is valuable for us to learn about. They discuss how Section One was revealed to be a preface for the D&C, and then they talk about how revelations came in general, and how that can help us understand the revelations we will study this year. Robin leads us through a discussion of what the Doctrine and Covenants is in general. They also explore the resources that are available as we study revelations this year. We are so grateful for our generous donors, and for Launchpad Consulting Studios for producing the episode, and for Rich Nicholls, who composed and plays the music for the podcast.

This week we are studying The Restoration of the Fulness of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Our prophet decided that to celebrate the restoration of the gospel and the first vision given to Joseph smith, instead of building a monument out of granite or stone, he would build one out of words. The monument of words the first presidency created is titled “The Restoration of the Fulness of the Gospel of Jesus Christ: A Bicentennial Proclamation to the World.” It's a monument not just to the First Vision but also to everything Jesus Christ has done—and is still doing—since then. Children will learn these concepts:“God loves His children in every nation of the world.”The Restoration began with an answer to a question.Jesus Christ has restored His Church.“The heavens are open.”“Heavenly messengers came to instruct Joseph Smith”
