Is deconstructing your faith a path to deeper belief or total doubt? In this episode, Mike Stone breaks down the growing conversation around faith deconstruction—why people question Christianity, what leads some to walk away, and how others come out with an even stronger faith.
All of us likely know somebody whose relationship with Jesus seems to be collapsing like a house of cards. It's difficult to trust God when a loved one deconstructs — we could find ourselves anxiously searching for solutions or lost in despair. Yet it brings comfort to remember that our Prodigal Father is furiously loving and always working in the hearts of those who appear to be walking away from Christ. Join us for this episode of Soul Talks as Bill and Kristi share heartfelt empathy for you and your loved ones who are deconstructing. You will be moved to faithfully love those struggling in their faith and equipped to journey with them in the Spirit of Jesus. Plus, a powerful time of prayer will stir your faith for reconstruction to rise out of the ruins of deconstruction. "Just as the Psalmist said, 'pride goeth before the fall.' And boy, did I learn that lesson. If I were to boil it down to what is the one thing that is different about me from before my crisis and after my crisis, it is that I was stripped, completely stripped, of my pride. The Lord needed to compel me to be humble. I was one of those foolish ones that needed to be compelled to be humble. I think of all the things I learned through that experience, I'd like to think that now I am a more humble person. I no longer aspire for those callings, which was a big part of who I was through most of my adult life. I now see other people in a different way. I see people with greater love and greater compassion. I just feel the love of the Savior as I look at each person. I just see people through a different lens because that pride is being stripped away."https://www.eventbrite.com/e/copy-of-come-back-to-christ-tickets-1209945723229?aff=oddtdtcreatorhttps://mikesautoshack.com/Come Back Team:Director, Founder & Host: Ashly StoneProducer: Lauren RoseOutreach Manager: Jenna CarlsonEditor: Cara ReedAssistant Editor: Michelle BergerArt Director: Jeremy GarciaEpisode Sponsor: Brick House Recovery https://brickhouserecovery.com/

"Something told me to read the New Testament again under these new eyes of coming back to faith. I was prompted to start in the book of Acts because that told me how the early church was laid out. You see that the apostles have authority. You see the apostles laying on their hands to receive the Holy Ghost. You see the apostles baptizing. You even see the apostles go to the temple. While looking around, no other church fit that criteria but The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I really started to want to come back to the church because I felt that it was the closest to the Bible." "There's very logical reasons to be members of the church, and very logical reasons to believe in a higher power --something beyond that's bigger than us, that has a spiritual aspect. This isn't irrational, this is rational. And so once you can get back into realizing that belief is reasonable, then you can ask the questions that will truly give you a testimony through prayer and study and pondering those primary answers we hear all the time. I talk about the heart and the head. I believe that we can, and should, have knowledge in our heart, feeling emotion, yearning for God, along with rationality and reason. For me, the church of Jesus Christ of Latter -day Saints is God's true and living church on the earth. I know that in my heart and I know it in my head. I have both of those. I think critics have had their way for a long time trying to convince people that there's no reason to have a rational testimony. But the 'Light and Truth Letter,' it's showing that it is reasonable -- and rational to believe, there's a lot of space for belief. My hope is that if you're struggling and you're a believing member, but having doubts -- If that's the case for you and you're telling yourself, there's no way the church could be true. That's not you talking. That's the critic parroting. You're parroting a critic, because there's lots of reasons to believe. I try to lay it all out in the 'Light and Truth Letter.' To show all of the positive evidences that there are for the church and that it's actually really rational and reasonable to believe. There is a preponderance of evidence that is more for us than against us. And for me -- that's enough to believe. And once I made that decision, then God could do something with me." https://www.lightandtruthletter.org/ Come Back Team: Director, Founder & Host: Ashly Stone Producer and Senior Editor: Lauren Rose Outreach Manager: Jenna Carlson Editor: Michelle Berger Art Director: Jeremy Garcia

My friend Guillermo Lemus (age 30, BYU grad student, BYU-Idaho grad, married, RM) joins us to share his multi-year journey to process the complicated aspects of our Church and find a way to remain a member of the Church. In sharing his story, Guillermo normalizes a faith crisis/expansion (including all the pain one feels on this road) and what he (and other did) to help/support him. Guillermo uses the model of the “Garden/Fall/Redemption” to frame up a faith expansion in a positive and on-shaming way. Guillermo shares a beautiful poem (“Lord of the 4th Watch—see show notes) and also talks about self-love. If you are in faith expansion and want to find a way to authentically stay in the Church, Guillermo story will help you (it helps me!). And if you are looking to better support our good members walking this road, Guillermo story/insights will help you better support others. Thank you, Guillermo, for being on the podcast. There is no quick or easy answers to the questions and doubts people have about Christianity. If you have experienced a season of doubt or if you know someone who has or is passing through such a time, we often wonder what say or what to do. We wonder if we've been deceived or if we haven't thought through everything we should have. We are tempted to envy others who seem to have it all together and become fearful of expressing our doubts. Maybe we are intimidated by objections for which we have no answer. This week on the Profile we continue our conversation with author, apologist, and pastor Bobby Conway as he continues to share his experiences and wisdom from his own struggles with doubt and how we might respond to our own doubts or the doubts of our friends, loved ones, or ardent skeptics.Bobby Conway is a Christian apologist, author, and pastor. He holds a Master's Degree in Theology from Dallas Theological Seminary, a Doctor of Ministry degree in Apologetics from Southern Evangelical Seminary, and a Ph.D. in Philosophy of Religion from the University of Birmingham in England. Although the number of nones in the USA has flatlined in recent years, deconstruction is still on the mind of many young people. This week a Christian apologist - raised without any religion, and a Christian who moved to agnostic atheism debate how we can reengage young people. Joining the Unbelievable debate is former atheist Mary Jo Sharp from the Pacific Northwest, A former atheist who came to faith, has experienced two worlds of American culture: growing up in the postmodern Pacific Northwest and then adulthood in the evangelical culture of the Southern Bible Belt. She first encountered apologetics in her own spiritual search while seeking answers, eventually becoming a professor of apologetics. Mary Jo is now the founder and director of Confident Christianity Apologetics Ministry. She has been featured in Christianity Today's cover story “The Unexpected Defenders” and is an international author and speaker. Mary Jo's most recent written work is, Why I Still Believe: A former atheist's reckoning with the bad reputation Christians give a good God. Send us a Text Message.Perfectionism is a very unique coping mechanism built to calm our personal anxieties. However, it can be an often is problematic to life in this world and the church. We can view the church and world's requirements as daunting, overwhelming and difficult to bear. Yet when we come to understand why we use perfectionism as a coping mechanism we can better come to know the Savior and the mercies and grace of his atonement.

Thank you for your supreme patience while we took an unscheduled break for a couple months! We're back with a conversation about the historical Jesus! Specifically, we're avoiding talking about "the Christ," instead focusing on the ideas of Jesus' humanity. Speculations include: as a devout Jewish man, he was likely married; he was likely born in Nazareth and not Bethlehem; and he was almost surely a stonemason and not a woodworker.Mentioned in the episode:codyumc.comSupport us:Join our Patreon community and buy us a drink at patreon.com/ravelpod for as little as $3/mo!Submit a voice memo or comment to the inbox at theravelpod@gmail.com! In the latest episode of the Cross Examiner podcast, we delve into the fascinating journey of Dr. John Dehlin, host of the Mormon Stories podcast. Dr. Dehlin, an ex-Mormon, has dedicated his career to exposing the truths behind Mormon practices and helping others navigate their own faith crises. This episode is a continuation of our in-depth conversation with him, exploring the psychological and social impacts of religious indoctrination, the rise of Christian nationalism, and the role of misinformation.Dr. Dehlin's journey is both compelling and relatable. Raised as a sixth-generation Mormon, he was taught to obey and follow the church's teachings without question. However, cracks began to form in his faith as he encountered various inconsistencies and ethical concerns, particularly during his mission in Guatemala. His experiences there, coupled with the rise of the internet and the availability of information, led him to question the very foundations of his beliefs. One of the most striking aspects of Dr. Dehlin's story is the concept of the "shelf." In the Mormon and post-Mormon world, individuals are encouraged to put doubts and questions on a metaphorical shelf, trusting that answers will come in time. For Dr. Dehlin, the shelf eventually became too heavy to bear, leading to a profound crisis of faith. This journey of questioning and seeking truth is something many can relate to, regardless of their religious background. The episode also delves into the broader implications of religious indoctrination and the rise of secular support systems. Dr. Dehlin discusses the importance of organizations like Recovering from Religion and the Secular Therapy Project, which provide crucial support for individuals leaving high-demand religions. These organizations offer a safe space for people to explore their doubts and find a community that understands their struggles. One of the most powerful moments in the episode is when Dr. Dehlin talks about the psychological impact of leaving a high-demand religion. He shares how many individuals experience anxiety, depression, and even suicidal thoughts as they grapple with the loss of their faith and the subsequent social and familial fallout. This highlights the critical need for mental health support and resources for those undergoing such transitions.Dr. Dehlin's work with the Mormon Stories podcast has not only helped countless individuals but also shed light on the broader human experience. As he aptly puts it, "The Mormon story is the human story." By sharing personal narratives, his podcast fosters empathy and understanding, encouraging listeners to see the common threads that connect us all.For those interested in exploring these themes further, we highly recommend tuning into this episode. Dr. Dehlin's insights and experiences offer a valuable perspective on the intersection of religion, truth, and personal transformation. Whether you're grappling with your own faith or simply curious about the human condition, this episode is sure to resonate.Don't miss out on this enlightening conversation. World leaders want us to take action in the face of a global climate crisis. Okay, so why aren't self-professing Christians packing into pews to hear and receive God's Word and Sacraments? Pastor Bramwell takes us on a tour of Scripture verses that should inform our behavior in the face of a worldwide climate emergency. If we're facing a climate crisis, a mass crisis of faith is even more disconcerting. This program originally aired August 20, 2022. Host Rev. Tyrel Bramwell, pastor of St. Mark Lutheran Church in Ferndale, California, and author of the book Come in, We are Closed, talks about curious topics to excite the imagination, equip the mind, and comfort the soul with God's ordering of the world in the Law and Gospel.

While sitting in a class at the theological seminary he attended, Michael Huston was floored when he heard his teacher say these words: “Lament is faithfully complaining to God.” The teacher went on to say, “Lament is the way you worship to God from within pain.” Huston describes the feeling he felt that day as exhaling a breath he had been holding for a very long time. On this week's episode, he explains why he hopes to help others find that same relief in the concept of lament. 1:51- What is Lament and Why the Interest?9:26- Structure of Lament12:47- Murmuring or Complaining Vs. Insights: Carly: "Keep in mind that you're suffering in your own way, and your partner’s suffering may be in a different way. So, if you’re able to kind of create a space where it's okay for both of you to be hurting at the same time. It opens up a lot of conversations instead of shutting things down with defensiveness." Dave: "Even if we have differences, we can still be kind. We can still choose to be kind to each other It's challenging but, be respectful of each other and even negotiate when you're negotiating with kids and practices and things. Kindness, kindness. Above all, through this, through the challenges you can still choose to be kind." Liz: "I love that whole idea that validation doesn't necessarily mean agreement. It really just means your perspective matters to me, which really means you matter to me." Subscriber-only episodeIn this poignant part two (of a two part series) Valerie and her guest, Nick, delve deep into the turbulent emotions surrounding Nick's evolving relationship with the Book of Mormon and its author, Joseph Smith. Nick candidly opens up about his journey from idealizing the scripture as a source of solace during his Navy days, especially during deployments to Iraq, to confronting the stark realities of Joseph Smith's life, which led to feelings of betrayal and grief. Despite these challenges, Nick has navigated through his anger to a place where he can still recognize the comfort this book provided him, while also expanding his definition of spiritual connections beyond traditional religious confines. Valerie and Nick's discussion underscores the complex nature of faith, the process of healing, and the importance of authenticity in one's spiritual journey. They invite their listeners to embrace the idea that one can find scripture in diverse sources and emphasize that personal growth allows one to appreciate the duality of both the good and the harmful parts of one's beliefs. This episode is a testament to the resilience of faith and the freedom found in exploring spirituality on one's terms.——————————————————————————————————————SUPPORT: Like what you're hearing at Latter Day Struggles Podcast? Subscriber-only episodeIn this thought-provoking episode, Valerie and Nathan delve deep into the complexities and true nature of prayer within the church. Through a compassionate lens, they discuss the symbolism and healing power of a congregation coming together in prayer, exploring the rich tapestry of how gratitude and worship are expressed across cultures and within the LDS faith tradition. They also courageously tackle the tougher issues—examining how the exclusion of women from certain church rituals and how withholding prayer privileges for any reason is unkind, incongruent with the nature of God and deeply psychologically and spiritually harmful. They challenge the pressures and misplaced expectations surrounding priesthood blessings, sharing heartfelt personal stories, and emphasize that spirituality should emanate from authentic and continuous engagement with the divine, not from ideas around transactional, sufficient faith, or worthiness. ——————————————————————————————————————SUPPORT: Like what you're hearing at Latter Day Struggles Podcast? Subscriber-only episodeIn this final episode in this mind-blowing four-part series tackling struggles between some parents and their disaffiliating LDS young adults, Valerie and guest therapist Liz Macdonald explore psychologist Erik Erikson's stages of psychosocial development—and use this theory of development to better understand what is going on between more traditionally believing LDS parents and their disaffiliating young adult children. This theory of development can shine a light on why some parents struggle so much in allowing their adolescent and young adults children the autonomy to grow into their own truths. This theory also can help us better understand the impact that parental underdevelopment might have on adolescents and young adults in completing successfully their own developmental life tasks. This series is intended to offer love and empathy for all: both the more traditionally believing LDS parents and their disaffiliated young adult children, shining a light on the extreme complexity of this situation and hoping to offer insights that will help families in our community heal. Subscriber-only episodeIn this part two of a four-part series, Valerie and fellow therapist Liz Macdonald continue in their profound exploration of the turbulent journey families face when young adult children disaffiliate from the LDS Church. This episode delves into the heart-wrenching conflicts that arise in some LDS homes when young adults begin the normative process of spiritual self definition. Liz's research brings to light some young adults' perceptions that their parents' certainty of LDS worldview shuts down any meaningful connection and dialogue and leads the young adult child feeling unseen, unsupported in their normative growth wrestles, and conditionally loved and accepted. The emotional toll on both parents and their emerging adult children navigating faith is extreme. Liz and Valerie discuss possible systemic that drive the phenomenon found in this research study, hoping to help families learn how to navigate these rough relational waters more competently. This series is intended to offer love and empathy for all both the more traditionally believing LDS parents and their disaffiliated young adult children, shining a light on the extreme complexity of this situation and hoping to offer insights that will help families in our community heal. Subscriber-only episodeIn the compelling final episode of their four-part focus on the prophetic work of Father Richard Rohr, Valerie and Nathan go macro and tackle systemic issues plaguing western religious institutions. They shine a light on the underlying power struggles that prioritize control over spiritual service, dissecting the impact of a patriarchal worldview on all major relational systems and the dehumanization it fosters. They break down five pervasive myths that undergird all Western relational systems, challenging listeners to question the male-centric, judgmental perspectives that claim rational superiority. They stress the importance of spiritual growth that embraces diversity, self-reflection, and a willingness to evolve past outdated traditions that cause harm. In this profound four-part series, Nathan and Valerie delve into some of the most formative ideas that they have learned on their faith reconstruction journey with the help of Father Richard Rohr. In this episode they talk about the nature of God and how this basic concept impacts EVERYTHING else in one's spiritual journey. They riff on ideas from Julian of Norwich, Richard Rohr, John Calvin, and current LDS scholars and theologians Fiona and Terryl Givens as formative in their reconfiguration of a compassionate and universalist God, challenging traditional perspectives of a conditionally-loving God demanding performance and repentance to achieve "worthiness" and present or eternal blessings. This conversation also paves the way for upcoming discussions on the prophetic wisdom of Richard Rohr which includes topics around why patriarchy is so harmful, the excavation of the True Self, and the importance of honoring brave voices of dissent. In today's part one of this two-part series, Valerie sits down with the insightful Jana Spangler to chat about her first-hand spiritual growth as a student of Father Richard Rohr. Jana walks us through the overarching teachings of the Living School's teachers, especially what she learned personally from Father Richard Rohr and the other interdenominational leaders at his “Living School”, a program sponsored by Rohr's Center of Action and Contemplation. They dive deep into the Mormon experience also, envisioning a shift toward more meaningful, mystical connection. In Friday's episode Jana shares specifics about her depth experience at The Living School, including what she learned about finding the sacred in the profane, the importance of becoming non-dualistic, and embracing a Christianity that is embodied in advocacy and social justice. Subscriber-only episodeToday Valerie dives deep into four common psychological strains experienced by most people with whom she has worked experiencing an LDS faith crisis as well as how she is learning how to address each of these strains as she personally grows and walks alongside those of you on this path with her. She delves into critical issues such as fractured ego structures, a deficit of complex thinking skills, the problems that come from inhabiting a single-pillar spiritual worldview, and the importance of unlearning unhealthy coping patterns adopted in our early development. Most importantly, she talks about the healing of each of these psychological strains. Healing is possible! And likely actually! We just need a good map and some companionship. Thanks for being here! Welcome to episode #3 in this four-part series on the history of the LDS temple recommend interview! Today, Valerie and Nathan continue this conversation by focusing on the evolution of temple admission from no process at all, to a vague, self-reflective process, to a process governed by adherence of specific theological beliefs and practices which changed depending a variety of factors discussed in this episode. One example they that explore is the shift in the demand for support of the practice of plural marriage to excommunication for the practice plural marriage--both connected to temple eligibility. They talk about how the temple recommend has become a forum for assessing and withholding worship privileges connected to issues such as loyalty, tithing, and LGBTQ identities, intellectualism, and feminism. As they unwrap the layers of historical context their hope is to demystify both the content and the process of the temple recommend interview, in hopes that you will feel less anxious and more empowered to connect with God through the temple if you feel that this will authentically enhance your spiritual journey. Their conversation also touches on the broader landscape of temple observance across various religious traditions as a way to see that temple worship is common and live-giving to many amongst spiritual traditions worldwide. Subscriber-only episodeWelcome to this last episode in this four-part series with esteemed guest Greg Prince, scientist, author, and scholar with deep ties to Mormon studies. In this episode, Val and Greg continue to examine the history of LDS hierarchy with a special focus on the gutsy and progressive Hugh B. Brown. Their conversation about the importance of diversity in any body of leadership leads to an exploration of the broader implications of the LDS Church's aging leaders (due to their succession-by-seniority-policy multiplied by advancements in medicine in the past several decades), discussing the possible need for succession policy reform, such as emeritus status, to maintain church vitality and address the concerns of the young faithful. Greg and Valerie touch on several important subjects, including the treatment of LGBTQ individuals and the ways in which a possible generational disconnect could be shaping the future of church membership. Don't miss this in-depth discussion, which extends an ongoing invitation for reflection and discourse in the LDS community.——————————————————————————————————————SUPPORT: Like what you're hearing at Latter Day Struggles Podcast?
