Hosted by 2 ex-Christians, Phil and Susie, from 2 very different religious backgrounds. We will discuss the flaws with Christian theology. A podcast about the logical, ethical, and emotional flaws in Christianity for both exvangelicals and current belie
The Flawed Theology podcast is an absolute gem that I stumbled upon recently and I can't get enough of it! From the moment I started listening, I was immediately hooked and completely engrossed in the conversations between the two hosts. In fact, I just binged six episodes in a row and I'm about to dive into the seventh. It's become my latest addiction and much like crack, it's hard to tear myself away from it!
One of the best aspects of The Flawed Theology podcast is the fresh voices that are behind it. The two hosts bring a unique perspective to the table as they openly discuss their deconversions and deconstructions. Their honesty and candor create an incredibly authentic listening experience that is hard to come by in other podcasts. You can truly feel their passion and excitement as they explore their newfound perspectives on Christianity. Additionally, their storytelling abilities are top-notch, making each episode engaging and captivating.
Another highlight of this podcast is its refreshing take on Christianity. While there are other podcasts that delve into similar topics of deconstruction, what sets The Flawed Theology apart is its ability to not get bogged down with Bible verses or heavy theological discussions. Instead, it focuses more on personal experiences, emotions, and real-life struggles encountered during the process of deconversion. This approach allows for a wider audience to relate to the topics discussed without feeling overwhelmed or left out by complex religious jargon.
On the downside, some listeners may find themselves yearning for more in-depth discussions or analysis when it comes to certain theological concepts or biblical passages. While this podcast excels in storytelling and personal anecdotes, there may be moments where deeper exploration into specific topics would add another layer of richness to the conversations.
In conclusion, The Flawed Theology podcast is an absolute must-listen for anyone interested in exploring alternative perspectives on Christianity or going through their own journey of deconversion. The hosts' ability to be relatable, honest, and engaging is truly commendable and sets them apart from other podcasts in this genre. Whether you are a former devout Christian or simply curious about the topic, give this podcast a chance. You won't be disappointed!
After an excessively long break, Phil and Suzie return for a little catch up chat. We talk about our summer breaks, where we both are now in our journeys away from faith and what the future might look like as we continue to move forward and what it means for the podcast and our lives in general. The episode concludes with some random podcast recommendation and a little discussion about religious trauma. We are looking forward to getting back into the groove as we wrap up the year and Season 3 over the next few months. In this episode, Phil and Susie explore the topic of prophecy. We discuss what prophecy is, what criteria something needs to meet in order to be considered "fulfilled" prophecy, examples of "fulfilled" prophecy from the bible and determining if they meet the criteria, modern false prophets, and how the gift of prophecy has changed over the centuries. Be warned, there is a lot of bible in this episode and we compare the biblical text to historical data to help us determine if the bible really does have fulfilled prophecy. There are a lot of links in the show notes section if you'd like to dig into this further. In this episode, airing on Mother's Day (which we didn't realize at the time of recording), Phil and Suzie chat with Diane, who is a long-time Virginia resident, a mom to a brilliant nearly-25-year-old, and completely owned by a big, goofy black lab and two cats – one perfect angel and one complete ass. She adores them all. She also loves to swim, write, and travel, and she's fascinated by architecture, especially old churches. Some have said that's God reaching out to her, but that just makes her snort. An agnostic atheist since her late teens (but a doubter since childhood), she was indoctrinated and raised in the Methodist church. She enjoys hearing about others' spiritual journeys, even when she doesn't understand them. We have a fascinating conversation about her upbringing, her transition from indoctrination to atheism, and the freedom, hope, and joy that she has found outside of religion and faith. Diane is the ultimate example of what many people strive for while deconstructing, namely the desire to be free, be herself, and connect with people on her own terms. Diane writes on her blog, Breathing Underwater. In this episode, Phil and Suzie talk with Sarah Miller Mott, a former preacher/leader under the Foursquare Denomination. She is a published author of poetry and working on getting her novels that she has written over the years published. She tells us all about her very interesting story, growing up Lutheran in North Dakota, how she deconstructed, became an atheist, and then went back to Xtianity in a whole new way, and then after being misled and manipulated by the church, deconstructed and deconverted again. She tells the story how she will never go back to being a believer and why. Her story is fascinating and engaging and you will certainly benefit from hearing it. In this episode, Phil and Susie discuss the correlation between religious ideology and the ideologies of authoritarianism. This was suggested to us as a It's a Feature, not a Bug” idea, but we decided to expand it to a full episode topic, because there's a lot of interesting things to talk about! In this episode, Phil and Suzie talk with Helen Greene, Ambassador and Fundraising Coordinator for Recovering from Religion. In this wide-ranging conversation, Helen talks with us about her interesting journey away from faith from her Catholic upbringing, discovery of paganism, and eventual deconstruction to skepticism and atheism. Helen comes from a diverse background of beliefs. Raised Roman Catholic, then rejecting the church to move into paganism, she was a pagan high priestess for 10 years during her time in that faith (which was 13 years). Eventually realizing through education and skeptical inquiry into herself, she came to the conclusion she had no solid evidence for her beliefs – which brought her to a more humanistic and realistic worldview. Still studying psychology even out of college, she spends her time trying to understand human behavior, the emotional and psychological understandings of ourselves, and what forms our perspectives and why. She is an ambassador for Recovering from Religion, head of their fundraising team, and one of the co-hosts of their Monday night podcast RfRx. She also volunteers at the Atheist Community of Austin, a rotating co-host of the podcast the Non Prophets, hosts a TikTok live The Queerly Godless Feminist via the ACA,and one Women Atheist Unload and Global Atheists at the Skeptic Haven YouTube channel. For fun, she enjoys horror (esp cosmic horror) and sci-fi movies, video gaming, and diving deep into made-up world-building stories such as the Lord of the Rings. As deconstruction and deconversion are becoming more prevalent in our world, the institutions of Xtianity are flailing to craft a response that will attempt to stem the tide of people leaving the faith, the church, and god himself. The “explanations” of why people are leaving, of course, they are not based in reality or facts, because most have never spoken with anyone who's actually left to find out their real reasons. In this episode, Phil and Suzie debunk many of these common “myths” that the church attempts to sell as the real reasons for deconstruction. In this episode, Phil and Susie wrap up the season with another Ask Us Anything session. We are excited to have a guest cohost, Arline from the Graceful Atheist Podcast!! We really had a blast with Arline and are so honored that she spent some time with us. Her insights and answers to your questions are just fantastic!! We received a lot of great questions, which are listed below with timestamps: 8:40: Can you help me understand what the apologists think about verses such as “Happy is the one who seizes your infants and dashes them against the rocks?” And other garbage things? How do you not get bitter and angry as you deconstruct? 18:45: What seemingly-trivial ways have you reclaimed your identity that was suppressed as a Christian? Examples: watching R-rated movies, swearing, celebrating Halloween, wearing bikinis, doing things just because you like doing them, etc? 24:13: I would love to hear about books you recommend on the subject of dealing with leftover fear of hell. Also, which of the sects would you consider most insidious, and which, in your opinion, is more insidious than the majority of people realize? 30:11: My question is how to cope with stress after leaving religion? A lot of people pray when things are going bad because they feel that faith will relieve stress. I think it would be good if you shared strategies for dealing with emotions like fear and anxiety without religion. 37:04: Why or what caused you to change your beliefs? How was the transition? (how long it took, how it felt during & how it impacted those close to you). If you experienced trauma due to religion, how that experience impacted your life at the time of impact up to present life. Coping mechanisms for dealing with ptsd. Why or what caused you to change your beliefs? How was the transition? (how long it took, how it felt during & how it impacted those close to you). If you experienced trauma due to religion, how that experience impacted your life at the time of impact up to present life. Coping mechanisms for dealing with PTSD. 48:20: How do you find solace in death without belief in an afterlife? (If you do find any sort of comfort regarding that! It's one of the biggest reasons I turned to religion for a long time.) 53:36: How or should you even come out to family and friends and if you do, how do you navigate the experience and keep your sanity? I live in a small Texas town which should say it all. I am also a small business owner which compounds my angst about this topic. 59.16: Why are women "second class" and why do they accept that? The whole serve your master, obey your husband is swallowed by so many SMART women. Religion is just so highly macho and being told from birth that you are there to serve must be so hard to recover from. For those who managed to escape, when was the seed planted that women are people too and what was the last straw that allowed them to get out? 1:09: Given that evidence suggests humans have no soul and therefore no free will, how should we change the way we treat others or hold them responsible for the harm they do? In this episode, we will discuss the idea of “the soul” and how it relates to the afterlife. Is there evidence for the existence of the soul? If the soul doesn't exist, then what does this mean for the idea of the “afterlife”. In this episode, Phil and Susie attempt to tackle a really broad subject, the historical Jesus. We want to be clear that we are not biblical scholars and that there is no way in the course of this episode that we are going to provide definitive answers to the questions we will be asking today. Biblical scholars have dedicated their whole lives to this topic and we hope to spark your interest in the topic, just as we have been fascinated by it. We are going to try to address 3 main questions about Jesus, and the reason that we are tackling these questions is because a lot of Xtians like to say that their faith is “not a religion”, but is “all about Jesus”. So, like Slim Shady, we're asking the real Jesus to “please stand up”. Episode Sections Intro (:24) Topic Intro (3:28) Did the Jesus as described in the Gospels Exist? In this episode, Phil and Susie "dig" into the power of music. Harlan Howard in the 50's used the phrase “3 chords and the truth” to describe his genre of country music and many other artists have used this phrase and allowed it to be their philosophy of songwriting. This phrase is funny because most worship songs are 3 chords and purports to be truth, but what is the truth that is actually being conveyed? How does music actually work to affect our emotions and how is this exploited in worship/Xtian music and sold as the “Spirit”? Can “secular” music do the same thing that Xtian music does? We will talk (and even sing) about some of the tactics that are used and even how chord structures and musical formulas can elicit certain responses. One of the most challenging aspects of deconversion for many of us was the decision to reveal our leaving the faith to our family and close friends and making it public, etc. Since many of us come from Xtian households and have still believing parents, there can be some serious anxiety around the decision to tell our parents that we can't believe what they brought us up to believe. We want to discuss the why and how of these difficult conversations and hopefully provide some semblance of community and a reminder that you are not alone in your feelings about this part of the journey. We are joined by a diverse panel of guests, Breanne, Miccah, and Lars, who share a bit of their deconversion story and how they approached the decision to share their journey with their closest people, like friends and family. It's a wide ranging conversation with incredible wisdom that we hope will be beneficial for anyone on a deconstruction journey. Janis is a long time friend of Phil's from his days at moderately progressive Baptist Church in VA, where we both lived. Janis was married to someone who was affiliated with the worship team and went through a very difficult discovery in her marriage, which led her down a pretty incredible life path. She is a bona fide badass who is an flight medic/ EMT and was a medic and competitor on the TV series, Naked and Afraid. In this episode, Phil and Susie discuss how the volume and intensity of animal suffering in the world serves as evidence to disprove theism, especially the version of theism that purports a loving, omniscient, and omnipotent deity. Is animal suffering and the theory of evolution evidence against the existence of a loving God? We expand on the problem of evil that extends beyond human suffering into the animal world. In this episode, Phil and Susie talk with Alex, who is is a recently deconverted Mormon and his story is truly fascinating!! We named this episode the way we did because Alex actually was a "high priest" in the Church of Mormon. If you ever wanted to know anything about Mormonism, you will learn a lot in this episode. Alex shares about his life growing up in the LDS church, the "shelf" items that finally led to his deconversion, some fascinating ways that Mormonism is similar to mainstream evangelical Xtianity a whole lot more! Plus a fun trivia segment where we ask Alex "Is this really Mormon?" Be sure to listen all the way to the end!! It's a good one! In this episode, Phil and Susie discuss the concept “If god Were real”. We will discuss all the ways that we would expect a truly true God to reveal itself and how they would act. We will compare how it would be if God were real or if God were created by humans and then how God is presented in Christianity and see what lines up. We will also discuss an epistemological question that could be useful when engaging believers—what could God do better? Prayer is a quintessential part of Xtian doctrine and is a mainstay of the life of the believer. Phil and Susie will delve into what prayer is, if it actually works, why and how people use the concept of prayer to give their faith more value/ meaning/ reality. Based a bit off of Susie's blog post “Does Prayer Work?” which was the first post I ever read of hers. https://www.flawedtheology.com/2021/11/does-prayer-work.html We will discuss what “does it work” means and how we view prayer now, on the other side of faith versus how we viewed it before. In this extremely passionate episode, Phil and Susie talk with Robert Peoples, Founder and CEO of Affinis Humanity. Affinis Humanity is a non-profit organization strategizing to alleviate religious discrimination for secular communities in education, business, and government. Since establishing Affinis Humanity in 2016, Robert has highlighted the problematic woes of racism, women's rights, homophobia, and their connection with societal religiosity. They have a unique focus on Government and Education. We talk with Robert about his faith background, how and why he started Affinis, the dangers of christian nationalism, theocracy, and fascism to our society. He explores the connection between christianity and racism and if humanism could actually be the most beneficial way to live and full and meaningful life. This is probably the most fun Phil and Susie have had during an interview and Robert's genuineness and passion for making the world a better place really shines through. In this week's episode, Phil and Susie talk about the concept of “magical thinking” and how it is used by believers to explain things that they just don't understand or to explain away things that they can't logically defend. The common explanation for explaining the unexplainable for the believer is the “providence” or “sovereignty” of God, meaning God's overarching plan for the universe and by extrapolation, one's entire life. Phil and Susie ask, "Does God really have a plan? Is it a good one? What happens when people question the plan and what happens when we discover that there isn't one?" In this episode, we have our first international guest, Aaron from Australia. Phil and Susie talk with Aaron about a wide variety of topics, including his faith background, childhood, and significant life events, some differences between Xtianity in Australia vs. the US, music, Hillsong, and worship leading. We also dig into how deconversion happened for him and a bit about grieving the loss of faith and how Xtianity shortcuts the grief process. TW/CW: discussion about abuse, general In this episode, Phil and Susie discuss that the idea that Xtianity is not a “religion, but a relationship” is flawed, but if believers want to maintain that it is a relationship, it's certainly not a healthy one. We will discuss the ways the “relationship” that God has with his followers has numerous similarities to a human abusive relationship. This will hopefully be information to help you decide if the things you believe are harmful to your life or not. We also highlight a really special "Good Human of the Week". In today's episode, Phil and Susie delve into the concept of fear and how integral a part it plays in the life of a Christian. We will talk about how fear is the basis of christianity (and many religions), but also teaches its followers to not be afraid. It's a dichotomy that we'd like to dissect and talk about. The belief system is based on several ways that fear is used throughout the “christianity lifecycle”. In today's episode, Phil and Susie will ask the question, if the god of Christianity is the one true god, why is he so damn hard to find? In today's episode, Phil and Susie delve into some of the early childhood objections that Susie had to Christianity. We will discuss the objections, how Christians might respond to these objections, and how we view these objections now as adults who've left the faith. Asking these questions and exploring these objections would be viewed a heresy in our previous lives, so we named this episode "The One with the Heretical Objections" to poke the idea of heresy in the eye a bit, since the real heresy is Christianity. Passage mentioned by Susie about "shriveled" hands: https://biblia.com/bible/rsv/leviticus/21/16-23 (hebrew word used is sheber, meaning a breaking, fracture, crushing, breach, crash). "Shriveled" may not be the best way to describe this, but that's how Susie interpreted and remembered this passage due to personal experience :) Music: "One Fine Day" & "Childish Prank" Susie's Blog: https://www.flawedtheology.com/ Phil's Blog: https://philqmusings.wordpress.com/ Follow us on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram @flawedtheologypodcast Website: https://www.flawedtheologypodcast.com Please rate and review us wherever you listen to us! Today Phil and Susie will be talking about the claim that the Bible is inerrant, and how we can use the Bible itself to disprove that claim. We are gonna split this up into a 2 part episode because there's so much to cover so we want to be able to really dig into this topic because it's a fun one! Today's episode will focus on what inerrancy is, a little history of how we got the modern day Bible, especially the NT, look into some various types of contradictions that are rampant throughout the text and then what a failure of inerrancy would really mean for Christianity. In today's episode, we wanted to tell a little more of our stories, but from a different angle. We come from very different faith backgrounds and so we wanted to compare and contrast the different time periods in our lives and what our mindsets were during these times and talk about how even though our journeys were very different, we both arrived at the same place.
