Spoons' Gord Deppe talks about doing double duty as guitarist for A Flock of Seagulls, their 1982 breakthrough at the Police Picnic at Exhibition Stadium [Police, English Beat, Joan Jett, Oingo Boingo, Talking Heads], Nile Rodgers taking a liking to them while opening for Boy George & Culture Club, catching grief for that Thrifty's ad campaign [‘Tarnished Spoons'], working with Daniel Lanois before he was Daniel Lanois, and wondering aloud why they can't get a major auto manufacturer to use Romantic Traffic in an ad campaign! Catch Gord doing double duty LIVE with both A Flock of Seagulls and the Spoons at Ed Sousa's two-day Sousapalooza birthday bash at the El Mocambo on Fri Aug 16th/Sat Aug 17th. Okay, so I have adored this band since 1990, when I first saw them open for Rush at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto. The band is Chalk Circle, and their singer/guitartist/songwriter Chris Tait, also just happens to have one of my favourite singing voices of all time. This Durham, Ontario Region band is still rocking to this day, playing various shows all over. Nothing though, in 2024, yet..... This conversation was a blast, and great to hear so many awesome stories from Chris. We will definitely do this again! The Play Podcast - 053 - The Caucasian Chalk Circle by Bertolt Brecht Host: Douglas Schatz Guest: Christopher Haydon The Play Podcast is a podcast dedicated to exploring the greatest new and classic plays. In each episode we choose a single play to talk about in depth with our expert guest. We discuss the play's origins, its themes, characters, structure and impact. For us the play is the thing. Bertolt Brecht wrote The Caucasian Chalk Circle in 1944 while in exile in the United States as a parable about the chaos and costs of war. After his return to East Germany in 1948 he updated the play to set it in the context of post-war Communism. His fable is both a theatrical fairy-tale and a political allegory. I'm delighted to welcome the director of the first major London revival for 25 years, Christopher Haydon, artistic director of the Rose Theatre to discuss this challenging, complicated, compelling, even crazy play.

I was delighted to be joined in studio this week by Chalk Circle vocalist and guitarist Chris Tait. I listened to him a lot as a teen (still do), so it was great to have him in for a conversation about his playlist AND my favourite Chalk songs. I won't spoil it, but Chris does something really cool with his playlist here. Every song has a place on the list for a very specific reason, and I was impressed at how the whole thing was carried out. Great stories too, including the fact that he actually argued against having Chalk Circle's biggest hit, "April Fool" as a single - he didn't even want it on the album(!). Really great conversation. Tait's playlist: Bay City Rollers - Saturday Night Led Zeppelin - Black Dog Rush - Working Man The Ramones - I Wanna Be Sedated The Skids - Into The Valley Echo & The Bunnymen - The Cutter Talk Talk - Life's What You Make It David Bowie - Space Oddity Matthew Sweet - Divine Intervention Blinker The Star - September Already Earth, Wind, & Fire - September Vullpeck - Dean Town
