Hello, and welcome to another month of Apocalypse Video's look at the wondrous world of Nature. For the month of March, we leave behind the ocean waters and take to the skies to observe the many species that inhabit the world above our heads. This…is March of the Penguins (...And Other Bird Related Films). In this third installment we enter a mysterious and bizarre world inhabited by both the living and the dead; a world locked in a power struggle between its creator and an angry Parakeet King; a world much like ours, and like our world, it too is fragile and all too close to calamity. This…is The Boy and the Heron.I'm your host, Dave, and joining me as we try our best not to be overrun by swarming toads are fellow cinephiles and Studio Ghibli fanboys Mike and Ryan.Topics of discussion in this episode include a film that you understand less with each rewatch; The Heron gives Michael Myers a run for his money in the creepy, stalking department; and finally, we wonder if The Boy and the Heron is the last film of its kind and whether or not Miyazaki will return to show everyone how it's done one more time.Be sure to rate, review and subscribe wherever you get your podcasts. You can also Like Us on Facebook, Follow Us on Instagram, or shoot us an email at apocalypsevideopod@gmail.comAnd thus concludes our look into the strange and wonderful imagination of Hayao Miyazaki. When we return, we'll be yucking it up with the Marx Brothers as they lay down some comedy foundations in Duck Soup.

Kambole Campbell (Empire Magazine, Vulture, Time Out) and Leslie Byron-Pitt (Fatal Attractions podcast) join Flixwatcher to review Kambole's choice The Boy and the Heron. The Boy and the Heron (2023) is the 12th Studio Ghibli animation written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki. The English dub version features the voices of Christian Bale as Shoichi Maki, Robert Pattinson as the Gray Heron, Florence Pugh as Kiriko, and Dave Bautista as the Parakeet King. The cast also includes Gemma Chan, Willem Dafoe, Karen Fukuhara, and Mark Hamill in other key roles. After losing his mother during the war, young Mahito moves to his family's estate in the countryside. There, a series of mysterious events lead him to a secluded and ancient tower, home to a mischievous gray heron. When Mahito's new stepmother disappears, he follows the gray heron into the tower, and enters a fantastic world shared by the living and the dead. As he embarks on an epic journey with the heron as his guide, Mahito must uncover the secrets of this world, and the truth about himself. Recommendability scores for The Boy and the Heron were mixed, the sprawling nature of the narrative and two hour run time were working against it to give an overall rating of 3.31. The ThawedCast: Conversations About Animation

Hayao Miyazaki directs the latest film from Studio Ghibli, 'The Boy and the Heron' (2023). This Oscar-winning film serves a magnum opus for a venerated animator nearing the end of his career, reflecting on his early life in this quasi-autobiographical fantasy. Mahito Maki leaves his home in Tokyo following the death of his mother in a World War II firebombing. Raised in a wealthy family, Mahito struggles to get along with his peers at his new rural school. He spends his time exploring his maternal family's palatial estate, including an abandoned tower that holds a profound secret. A mysterious gray heron beckons him to enter the tower, and when it appears his aunt-turned-stepmother has gone to the tower as well, Mahito hurries after her, plunging headfirst into a glimpse at destiny itself. Nate and Brian invite Forrest Dickison on to make sure he takes first place as SASF'S Most Invited Guest. But really they want to discuss Forrest's debut picture book, Crispin's Rainy Day, a story about a boy who wants to join a crew of pirate frogs -- but only if he can escape from his little sister first. The book is a perfect chocolate chip story with stunning illustrations -- meant to be enjoyed as a family -- but it has a contentious depiction of gender roles reflected in the relationship between Crispin and his sister Rose. "Contentious" means "traditional" in this case -- Rose wields delicious slices of cake and is completely uninterested in swords. The discussion of the heroic feminine leads naturally into a discussion of Miyazaki's latest feature film, The Boy and the Heron, with some amazing female characters of its own and bold narrative choices (man-eating parakeets, anyone?). Forrest calls it a masterpiece; Brian wanted it to be better. You'll have to listen to the episode to find out what Nate thought. If you're an NC Wyeth fan, you'll also get some recognition in this episode. Visit crispinsrainyday.com for more.

Like Chihiro in SPIRITED AWAY, the protagonist of Hayao Miyazaki's latest film, THE BOY AND THE HERON, is drawn into a fantastical world populated by strange creatures that help usher him through a coming-of-age journey — but Mahito is a very different protagonist, and his journey unfolds in a very different way. We're joined once again by Vulture editor and animation expert Eric Vilas-Boas to unpack the imagery and ideas populating Miyazaki's latest wonderland, and debate the animation auteur's feelings about birds, before bringing SPIRITED AWAY back in to compare these films' depictions of children and parents, villains and allies, and “weird little guys.” And in Your Next Picture Show, Eric offers a recommendation for another film that joins BOY AND THE HERON on his list of the year's best animation for Vulture. It took seven years for Hayao Miyazaki and the artists at Studio Ghibli to make THE BOY AND THE HERON. What better way to honor that lengthy process than to invite JD Amato back for another clockbusting, context-loaded episode?! For a rather bit-free THREE-AND-A-HALF HOURS, we are diving into Miyazaki's personal history, his creative process, the differing animation styles between the Ghibli greats, and the thematic implications of this beautiful new film. Studio Ghibli's latest, THE BOY AND THE HERON, is unmistakably a Hayao Miyazaki creation, drawing multiple specific elements from the animator's life and past work — most conspicuously 2001's SPIRITED AWAY, another film in which a sad young person is whisked away to a wondrous-slash-terrifying realm filled with memorable creatures and its own dream logic. Before we venture into Miyazaki's latest idiosyncratic, shifting world, we're joined by Vulture editor and animation reporter Eric Vilas-Boas for a look back at what makes Miyazaki's earlier adventures in the spirit realm simultaneously sticky and slippery, and what primed SPIRITED AWAY for crossover success. And in Feedback, we continue the discussion of how we're meant to read KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON's ambiguous ending.  Please share your comments, thoughts, and questions about SPIRITED AWAY, THE BOY AND THE HERON, or anything else in the world of film, by sending an email to comments@nextpictureshow.net, or leaving a short voicemail at (773) 234-9730.
