This week, Nigel and Tazziii say goodbye to a master of storytelling with Hayao Miyazaki's last film…maybe? Either way, we get autobiographical with a deep dive into The Boy and the Heron (starting at 19:36), with manga artists Inko and Chie. It's a story that combines all that makes Miyazaki stories great, but with a message that can be a challenge to decipher for those not already familiar. We examine the narrative and pull apart why this left us feeling positive and hopeful by the end. It's a story that relies on the emotional journey of its main characters (from the cute to the absurd) over a logical plot. But it absolutely has something special to say in its themes about dealing with grief and accepting suffering as a part of life. This week's storytelling tip is about implementing a non sequitur narrative in your story. Other stories we're enjoying include: Fairy Tale (Book), How High We Go in the Dark (Book), Kaos (Netflix), What We Do in the Shadows (Hulu/Disney+), Black Clover (Crunchyroll), Bob's Burgers (Disney+), The Way of Kings (Book), Agatha All Along (Disney+), Tokyo Revengers (Crunchyroll)

Wiz HIGHLY RECOMMENDS The Boy and the Heron When I originally watched The Boy and the Heron in theaters last year, my feelings on the film were mixed and kind of muddled: The animation was absolutely gorgeous to look at, whether it was in motion or just by looking at the vivid, luscious colorwork that both the real world and the "dream world" inhabit. Also, the music is incredible when it's there, but since it's such a quiet film when it does come up it hits a lot stronger. But I definitely felt conflicted after I left the theater. It's definitely a much more thoughtful, deeper film and I just didn't feel I quite "got it". So, last year, I did a quick review and didn't really give it a rating. I just said I liked it but it definitely needed a second viewing. Well, after a second viewing, my thoughts have become more clear: The Boy and the Heron is beautiful in many ways. Yes, the visuals are fantastic, but what's also beautiful is the central story about boy who struggles to come to terms with the death of his mother and life changing. The central story is about Mahito, a young man who is told by a grey heron that his dead mother is inside a labyrinthe tower of questionable origin. The Boy and the Heron is clearly for those who are Ghibli fans already and are of a more advanced age: the film in its first hour is slower and methodical. It sits in the quiet of the scenery and feels much more thoughtful than Miyazaki's other films. But then, that's the draw when the film goes into the dream world. Fantastical elements are fascinating to look at and the world seems to have this logic and backstory that is incredibly interesting. At my first viewing of the film, the main character didn't do much for me at all. After this second viewing, Mahito is one of the deeper characters Miyazaki has crafted. Not only is his suffering and conflict displayed incredibly well, but the dream world itself acts very well as part of his character and his maturation through dealing with grief and change. The only issue with me is that some elements of the film still feel confusing: namely the Parakeets and The Granduncle and who they represent. But honestly, that just gives me another reason to experience the film yet again to gleam more from it. The Boy and the Heron is not only a beautifully made film from visuals to music, but it's also a strikingly deep and emotionally resonant film that the older set will likely adore...while a younger set might find it too daunting.

The ThawedCast: Conversations About Animation

Hayao Miyazaki directs the latest film from Studio Ghibli, 'The Boy and the Heron' (2023). This Oscar-winning film serves a magnum opus for a venerated animator nearing the end of his career, reflecting on his early life in this quasi-autobiographical fantasy. Mahito Maki leaves his home in Tokyo following the death of his mother in a World War II firebombing. Raised in a wealthy family, Mahito struggles to get along with his peers at his new rural school. He spends his time exploring his maternal family's palatial estate, including an abandoned tower that holds a profound secret. A mysterious gray heron beckons him to enter the tower, and when it appears his aunt-turned-stepmother has gone to the tower as well, Mahito hurries after her, plunging headfirst into a glimpse at destiny itself. I recently watched Studio Ghibli's new film, The Boy and the Heron.Perplexed and fascinated, I watched it again. The film has many layers, and not neatly stacks. Metaphors, history, personal experiences, imagination, mythology: there are many aspects to focus on.I'm especially drawn by the films' two worlds, and how they intertwine. One is a countryside estate in Japan during World War 2. The other is an underworld accessed through a mysterious tower. While it will be helpful for you if you've seen the film, and there will be spoilers, I reckon this will be interesting either way.To help with this exploration, I brought on my friend Chandler Passafiume: storyteller, game designer, writer and poet. When we met, both of us staying in an island farming community, our story minds connected. He's so good that he may even become one of a few regular, rotating co-hosts on the show. You can find him at Substack at Wandering Cloud.Overlapping worlds is a huge theme in mythology, as in modern stories, and aren't we each moving in different worlds that affect each other? The world of work and home life, of one group of friends and another, of diverse lands we moved between. We discuss the boy hero's approach to the otherworld, how the same characters appear differently on each side, how some characters move between the worlds, the role of the trickster heron, and even mutual causality between worlds. As this one was a lively conversation, I've chosen not to make it into a written article as well. Nate and Brian invite Forrest Dickison on to make sure he takes first place as SASF'S Most Invited Guest. But really they want to discuss Forrest's debut picture book, Crispin's Rainy Day, a story about a boy who wants to join a crew of pirate frogs -- but only if he can escape from his little sister first. The book is a perfect chocolate chip story with stunning illustrations -- meant to be enjoyed as a family -- but it has a contentious depiction of gender roles reflected in the relationship between Crispin and his sister Rose. "Contentious" means "traditional" in this case -- Rose wields delicious slices of cake and is completely uninterested in swords. The discussion of the heroic feminine leads naturally into a discussion of Miyazaki's latest feature film, The Boy and the Heron, with some amazing female characters of its own and bold narrative choices (man-eating parakeets, anyone?). Forrest calls it a masterpiece; Brian wanted it to be better. You'll have to listen to the episode to find out what Nate thought. If you're an NC Wyeth fan, you'll also get some recognition in this episode. Visit crispinsrainyday.com for more.

The lovely new animated film The Boy and the Heron is the first film in 10 years from visionary Japanese filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki (Spirited Away, My Neighbor Totoro). The heron in question is part-heron, part-man who serves as a guide for a boy as they navigate a realm somewhere between life and death.
