If you aren't hip to the Michter's-made Bombergers 108 proof vintage release you need to get up to speed. It doesn't have the Michter's name, so I think it gets overlooked, but it's a true sleeper hit. They age the distillate in Chinquapin oak that has been air-dried for at least 3 years which means the whiskey takes on a very mellow flavor reminiscent of whiskey from the 50s and 60s.

In this episode, we dive into the history of the forgotten chinquapin and what new research tells us about its diversity and actual range. For folks unfamiliar, the chinquapin is often considered the smaller cousin of the American Chestnut, despite the fact that research today suggests that isn't the whole story. We're talking about the Ozark, Allegheny, and the Alabama chinquapins and what role these trees can play in our climate-change driven future! This week we dive deep into learning about an obscure native chestnut relative that is highly preferred by wildlife, and the grass roots organization we believe will bring it back to its former glory. Our brilliant guest, AJ Hendershott, with the Ozark Chinquapin Foundation, really schooled us on everything to know about the Ozark Chinquapin (Castanea ozarkensis) and what they are doing to get them back to a sustainable level. You're gonna want to get your hands on some nuts after listening. The conversation briefly evolves into some fun discussion about primitive weaponry, and Dudley also talks tree protection. Brandon Butler and Nathan “Shags” McLeod sit down with Steve and Leslie Bost with the Ozark Chinquapin Foundation. The Ozark Chinquapin Foundation is a non-for-profit organization whose members strive to restore the Ozark Chinquapin trees. The Ozark Chinquapin (Castanea Ozarkensis), sometimes called the Ozark Chinkapin or Ozark Chestnut, was drought tolerant, grew to heights of 65 feet, 2-3 feet diameter, and grew on acidic dry rocky soils on hilltops and slopes. The trees produced a bounty of sweet nuts every year without fail and was sought as a nutritious food source by humans and wildlife. The wood was highly prized because it was rot resistant and made excellent railroad ties and fence posts. Now the trees are gone.Logging practices and later the chestnut blight (Cryphonectria parasitica) wiped out the Ozark Chinquapin. Today only blighted stumps remain of this once important Ozark tree. Sprouts emerge from the stumps, many managing to produce some nuts, but within 4-6 years the blight again strikes, killing the sprouts and starting the blighted cycle all over again. The number of surviving stumps and the historic range of the tree continue to shrink. For more info: https://ozarkchinquapinmembership.org/#https://www.facebook.com/ozarkchinquapinfoundationhttps://www.youtube.com/channel/UCYLWMTTEAeTvZFQzqlT886gSpecial Thanks To CZ-USA:https://cz-usa.com/Special Thanks To Living The Dream Properties:https://livingthedreamland.com/Special Thanks To Hunting Works For Missouri:https://huntingworksformo.com/Special Thanks To Mongo Attachments:https://www.mongoattachments.com/Special Thanks To Scenic Rivers Taxidermy:http://www.scenicriverstaxidermy.com/Connect with Driftwood Outdoors:https://www.facebook.com/DriftwoodOutdoors/https://www.instagram.com/driftwoodoutdoors/Email:info@driftwoodoutdoors.com

In this episode, we dive deeper into what is being done to bring the Ozark Chinquapin back from the brink of extinction. The Ozark Chinquapin (Castanea ozarkensis) is a tree on the brink of extinction. Like its more popular cousin, the American chestnut, the Ozark Chinquapin is a victim of an introduce blight brought to this continent over a century ago. The loss of this tree was so severe that it has largely been forgotten. The Ozark Chinkquapin Foundation is trying to change that. There is hope for this species and it lies in scattered individuals that are proving to be surprisingly resistant to the deadly fungal infection. Joining us to talk about the mission to save the Ozark Chinquapin is the founding president of the Ozark Chinquapin Foundation, Steve Bost. Steve's passion for this tree is truly an inspiration and thanks to a dedicated group of individuals, this tree has a fighting chance at regaining at least some of its former glory. Join us for part 2 of an in depth look at what is being done to save the Ozark Chinquapin. From the CD "On The Edge" by the Cliffhangers. Fiddle: Mark Simos; banjo: Brendan Doyle; guitar: Rusty Neithammer; tenor guitar: Jody Platt; bass: Karen Falkowski. Fiddle tuning: FCFC, banjo tuning: FBbFBbC Sources: Hiram Stamper, Hindman, Knott County, Kentucky; and his son Art Stamper. Mark's notes: "I first heard Art play this tune late one foggy night at Clifftop — standing in a muddy clearing amidst a gathered crowd, hat slouched on his head, cross-tuned fiddle sailing the glorious fat low notes out into the dark trees. Though our version here is closer to his dad Hiram’s, we dedicate this tune to Art’s memory."
