This week on the show, Jeff's audio is crap, but the conversation is great! John kicks us off with a mini-review of Steven Soderbergh's “Black Bag”, starring Cate Blanchett and Michael Fassbender. Once he gives his thoughts, we gripe about filming expenses in LA and the US as a whole and compostables before getting to our featured conversation, “Dial ‘M' For Murder”, the Alfred Hitchcock classic. Our second time visiting 1954, we give you some context by reading some film facts and trivia, American facts and trivia, and then get to the show. Our phone number is 646-484-9298. New episode out now! We revisit the world of Alfred Hitchcock with 1954's Dial M For Murder. We talk about the visual style of the film and how it was influenced by the decision to shoot with a new 3-D camera rig, are impressed by the use of shadows and score to increase the suspense, enjoyed watching Tony evolve his plan when things went wrong, and discuss the first appearance of both the stereotypical “Hitchcock blonde” and Grace Kelly in particular in his films. We touch on the similarities we see between the film and other Hitchcock movies as well as Columbo and Poirot, try to figure out where we've seen the actors before, and admit we kinda wanted to see the murder succeed just to see a satisfying plan come together. Katy cannot pronounce names or remember things, Carrie knows a real finger when she sees one, Maddy has to plan very carefully when going to a movie, and Mack is the Keymaster. We also discuss new terms for a secret male lover, ponder the ubiquity of a pencil-thin mustache in these noir films, and compare a scene from The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh to one of an English judge ordering the death penalty . We touch on movie theater soda blends, Mouse Trap, auditing your keyring, and the evolution of the car selling process. Enjoy! And special thanks to Jason for compiling a very helpful dossier- find him on Letterboxd under JKHenson89 here! TW: Capital punishment, gaslighting
Of his time working with then burgeoning film actress Marilyn Monroe, Fritz Lang recalls a 26 year old who struggled with self esteem issues, set tardiness, and lack of preparation. On 1952's Clash By Night, adapted from the Clifford Odets play, Monroe drove the director to distraction but was surprisingly embraced by leading lady Barbara Stanwyck. Stanwyck, recognizing an overwhelmed and emotionally vulnerable fellow actress, was patient, helpful, and caring with the young actress according to Lang. What resulted was a pretty assured above the title debut for Monroe and Stanwyck's usual strong lead performance. The drama also boasts the talents of Paul Douglas, Robert Ryan and Keith Andes (returning from the Broadway play, albeit in a different role). Your hosts Dan and Vicky discuss the film along with a list of recently seen like Luca Guadagnino's Queer, La La Land, Emilia Perez, September 5, and The Fire Inside. Alfred Hitchcock's 1954 classic Dial M For Murder is a celebrated work that has been remade for both the big and small screen, and the stage, and which concerns the tale of a cheating wife, a scheming husband, and an elaborate murder plot. In 2007, a court in South Wales was to hear it's very own version, and just how life imitated art... The episode contains details and descriptions of crimes and events, including descriptions of a sexual nature, that some listeners may find disturbing and or distressing, so discretion is advised whilst listening. Give online therapy a try at betterhelp.com/BENEATH and get on your way to being your best self.” ** Sometimes, there is nothing quite like a good old B-movie. Maybe the production values aren't the best, and maybe the story is grittier than most, but these little gems have provided hours of viewing pleasure to so many. These films also had great leading men in them. Studly, sturdy, reliable actors who might not be GARY COOPER or CARY GRANT or CLARK GABLE, but were handsome and talented and knew how to beat up the bad guys and win over the lovely leading lady. As an homage to the leading men of the B's, this week, we'll take a look at the lives an careers of five of our favorites. As a master of suspense, tension building, and incredible casting there is nothing better in a classic murder mystery story. These are just some of the brilliant aspects of his filmmaking that we still study today. My first watch was when I was super young thanks to my mom. This is one of those stories that has become a comfort film to me now in my adulthood. Adapted from a play, Dial M for Murder mainly takes place inside the apartment of Tony and Margot Wendice and as the story unfolds it's exciting from moment to moment. Me and Charles love the classics, including Ray Milland (woof) and the etherial and later royal Grace Kelly. We talk the behind the scenes. drama and other casting options, how the fashion came together, and questioned how this whole thing could have been solved by having a keychain on your latch key.Off-topic rants include: Oscars rage segment, the Back to the Future series, scandalous old Hollywood movie themes, and we have a grasshopper interruption about 33 mins in--- Get BONUS episodes on 90s/00s TV and culture (Freaks & Geeks, My So Called Life, Buffy, 90s culture documentaries, and more...) and to support the show join the Patreon! After 3 weeks off, Bev returns to the podcast to chat about Alfred Hitchcock's chamber piece. His Dial M For Murder stars a few very talented liars. Well, the characters are, not the actors. The best of those is Ray Milland, who's tremendous in this as one of Hitchcock's most-diabolical villains. His wife was unfaithful and he has a coldblooded plan to get revenge...and to get her money too. Grace Kelly is that wife and she's not at her best here, although the writing doesn't help her character be much more than a plot device. Otherwise, Frederick Knott's script (based on his own play) is dynamite. Dial M For Murder was also part of the early-'50s fad of being shot in 3D, although it was rarely shown that way. And it didn't need it. When Hitch and his team are cooking, they don't need gimmicks. So get cozy in your small English flat as a stranger gears up to strangle you in this 591st edition of Have You Ever Seen, which makes the call to talk about Dial M For Murder. 1954 was one of Hitchcock's best years: he released two films, "Dial M for Murder" and "Rear Window". Both were shot in color and both focused on husbands attempting to murder their wives and go unpunished. "Dial M for Murder" introduced Grace Kelly to the Hitchcock universe, boldly experimented with 3D photography and seamlessly translated the play to the screen without putting the camera outside of the couple's apartment. Join us as we explore this nasty and highly enjoyable gem with Joel Gunz, the inimitable Alfred Hitchcock Geek and the president of HitchCon Annual International Alfred Hitchcock Conference. Note: the YouTube version features additional visual material discussed by Joel in this episode!
Scheming husband, Tony Wendice plots the murder of his adulterous wife, Margot, to free himself of their unhappy marriage but keep her money. In "Strangers on a Train" fashion, he lures an old acquaintance to his apartment to blackmail him into doing the job for him. Things go awry for Tony when Margot survives, and he must hurry to sweep up any breadcrumbs leading to him. Robin and Lisa discuss this Hitchcock favorite and Grace Kelly in another fun episode of Real Old Reels.https://www.instagram.com/realoldreels/

Get a rare glimpse behind the scenes as Ken reveals his vision for honoring the master of suspense with a keen focus on music and ambiance. The actors chime in with enthusiasm; Flynn delves into the psyche of the scheming Tony while Jack avoids the original film to infuse Max Halliday's character with a fresh essence. If the intricate dance between character and plot intrigues you, this conversation will sharpen your appetite for mystery and drama. The creativity brews in our second act, where we weave through the elaborate costume and prop tapestry of the upcoming "Three on the Edge Festival." It's Popzara's Movie Time! Podcast, where our in-house movie nerds Ethan Brehm and Nate Evans take you on an unscripted journey yakking and chatting about some of their favorite movie moments and cinematic scenes, from past and present, presented without snark and snobbery for your listening pleasure. On this episode our hosts explore two examples of classic and neo noir from entirely different generations of filmmaking (and filmmakers) where the best-laid plans of mice and men often go awry, with delightful results for those in the audience. First is 1954's Dial M for Murder, Alfred Hitchcock's adaptation of Frederick Knott's play where the “perfect murder” meets an imperfect world. Featuring an unforgettable performance by Hitchcock-favorite (and future real-life princess) Grace Kelly, the film would become a popular template for generations of thrillers where the fun comes from watching a well-oiled machine go off the rails. Next is 1981's Body Heat, the directorial debut from Lawrence Kasdan (writer of The Empire Strikes Back, Raiders of the Lost Ark) starring William Hurt and Kathleen Turner (also making her film debut) that pairs classic film noir with erotic thrills in one satisfying, sexy package. It would likewise become the template for countless other erotic thrillers that would dominate the 1980s, made even better by John Barry's unforgettable score and Richard H. Kline's dazzling cinematography. What's the difference between classic noir and neo-noir? Did you know Hitchcock's film was originally filmed and meant to be viewed in 3D? Did a murderous femme fatale inspire Jessica Rabbit? Can a murder mystery still be a whodunnit when you already know who dunnit?

In a delightfully macabre bit of counter-programming, Northlight Theatre is producing the classic Dial M For Murder, which has already been extended into 2024 and whose director Georgette Verdin talks about why it's the perfect kind of play for the holiday season. Georgette reveals the fantastic run of mystery-thrillers she's been on; the opportunity and payoff of leaning into genre programming; the fundamental need for catharsis; how the theatre industry struggles to market new work and reach new audiences (and sometimes succeeds); and the powerful beauty of finding light in the darkness. Is Alfred Hitchcock the best of them all? That's the question that watching the AFI's Top 100 films raised for us as we saw the British director at his peak. We feel like in order to answer that question, we need to go allll the way back to the beginning--his beginning--and watch as many of his films as we can get our hands on. It won't quite be ALL of his films, which number somewhere around 53, but it will be most of them. We're using several different lists, curated collections, and boxed sets to assemble our deep dive, and if you wish to follow along, here's the order we're watching them in, and where you can find them for yourself: The Pleasure Garden (1926) The Lodger: A Story of the London Fog (1927) Downhill (1927) Blackmail (1929) Rich and Strange (1931) The Man Who Knew Too Much (1934) The 39 Steps (1935) Young and Innocent (1937) The Lady Vanishes (1938) Rebecca (1940) Foreign Correspondent (1940) Suspicion (1941) Saboteur (1942) Shadow of a Doubt (1943) Spellbound (1945) Notorious (1946) Rope (1948) Strangers on a Train (1951) I confess (1953) Dial M For Murder (1954) Rear Window (1954) The Trouble With Harry (1955) The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956) The Wrong Man (1956) Vertigo (1958) North by Northwest (1959) Psycho (1960) The Birds (1963) Marnie (1964) Torn Curtain (1966) Topaz (1969) Frenzy (1972) Family Plot (1976) We hope you follow along, and we hope you have a blast! :)
