fWotD Episode 2764: Battle of Cane Hill Welcome to Featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia’s finest articles. The featured article for Thursday, 28 November 2024 is Battle of Cane Hill. The battle of Cane Hill was fought between Union and Confederate forces during the American Civil War on November 28, 1862, in northwestern Arkansas, near the town of Cane Hill. Confederate Major General Thomas C. Hindman had made an abortive offensive into southwestern Missouri from Arkansas earlier in the year, but had withdrawn to Arkansas. Union troops under Brigadier General James G. Blunt had followed Hindman into northwestern Arkansas, and the Confederate general saw an opportunity to attack Blunt while his division was separated from the rest of the Union Army of the Frontier. Hindman then sent a force under Brigadier General John S. Marmaduke to Cane Hill, which was also known as Boonsboro, to collect supplies. In early November, a detachment of Blunt's command led by Colonel William F. Cloud defeated a small Confederate force commanded by Colonel Emmett MacDonald in the Cane Hill area. After MacDonald's defeat, Marmaduke remained in the Cane Hill area with his force. Blunt moved to attack Marmaduke on November 27. The Confederates expected the Union attack to come up the Cincinnati Road, but it instead followed the Ridge Road and then the Fayetteville Road. Cloud's men led the Union advance and made contact with Colonel Joseph O. Shelby's Confederate troopers on the morning of November 28. Shelby withdrew from the Cane Hill area after an artillery duel, and Marmaduke reformed his line in the Newburg area.Due to the Union artillery advantage, the Confederates fell back from Newburg to an elevation known as Reed's Mountain. Shelby conducted a rear-guard action by having a series of small forces confront the Union before falling back and allowing the next line to engage. The Confederates made a stand at Reed's Mountain, but were forced to withdraw. Blunt continued to pursue, and several miles south of the John Morrow house, Confederate troops led by Colonel Charles A. Carroll laid an ambush for Blunt's leading elements. The Confederates then presented a flag of truce as a ruse to give themselves time to withdraw from the field. In early December, Hindman moved to attack Blunt's force, but Union reinforcements from Springfield, Missouri, under the command of Brigadier General Francis J. Herron arrived in time to aid Blunt. The ensuing Battle of Prairie Grove was fought on December 7. While the outcome of the fighting was inconclusive, Hindman withdrew from the field and the Union retained control of Missouri and northwestern Arkansas. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:30 UTC on Thursday, 28 November 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Battle of Cane Hill on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Aria.

El internet se suponía que fragmentaría a las audiencias y haría imposible la existencia de monopolios mediáticos. En cambio, gigantes como Google y Facebook ahora dominan el tiempo que pasamos en línea y capturan todas las ganancias de la economía de la atención. "The Internet Trap" explica cómo ocurrió esto.

This week, Hindman, Kentucky writer, educator, vocalist and world champion mountain dulcimer Jedi Sarah Kate Morgan recorded live at the Ozark Folk Center State Park. Also, a special performance by the 2024 Ozark Folk Center Mountain Dulcimer Contest winner Melinda McMillan of Martinsville, IN. “Born of Appalachian soil in Sharps Chapel, Tennessee, Sarah Kate Morgan sings, plays, and writes like she's been in these hills since the dawn of time. She's had plenty of varied influences, beginning with hearing a classical music CD belonging to her family and going on to discover old time music through a dulcimer built by her grandfather. She began playing dulcimer at age 7. This proved to be a pivotal moment. At 18 years old, Sarah Kate placed 1st at the 2012 National Mountain Dulcimer Championships in Winfield, Kansas. She's gone on to build a unique personal style which honors mountain dulcimer giants such as Jean Ritchie while working across genres to build something new. Her dexterous approach to the instrument is one that only masterful artists can bring to the table; much like Bruce Molsky and the fiddle, having been a dedicated student of the dulcimer's complexities Morgan is able to distill them into a beautifully polished package. Well-known and widely respected as one of the leading experts of the mountain dulcimer, Sarah Kate is also a first-rate singer and songwriter. Her earthy and poetic lyrics embrace the highs and lows of southern Appalachian life while her voice does the same – moving between alto and soprano parts with ease. Her crystal-clear but rootsy vocal style combines the best of country, old time, bluegrass, and gospel influences who, like Morgan, foreground their cultural roots. All of this goes hand in hand to create a musical experience akin to a sonic baptism.” - https://www.sarahkatemorgan.com/bio-1 In this week's “From the Vault” segment, OHR producer Jeff Glover offers a 1981 archival recording of Country Music Hall of Fame and Grand Ole Opry member Ramona Jones fiddling out a square dance on the traditional tune “Liberty,” from the Ozark Folk Center State Park archives. In his segment “Back in the Hills,” writer, professor and historian Dr. Brooks Blevins profiles self-promoting Ozark folk artist and entrepreneur L.L. Broadfoot.

Industrial Talk is chatting with Ahmik Hindman, Sr. Network and Security Solutions Consultant with Rockwell Automation about “Security solutions for protecting your connected assets and operations”.  The following is a summary of our conversation: Collaboration and information sharing are crucial in the cybersecurity landscape. There are various platforms and initiatives where manufacturers can share threat intelligence, experiences, and best practices. One notable example is the **Industrial Control Systems Cyber Emergency Response Team (ICS-CERT)**, a division of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. ICS-CERT provides a platform for critical infrastructure owners and operators to report cybersecurity incidents and receive assistance in incident response and recovery. Additionally, there are industry-specific Information Sharing and Analysis Centers (ISACs) and Information Sharing and Analysis Organizations (ISAOs) where companies within the same sector share cybersecurity information. These platforms facilitate collaboration and enable organizations to stay updated on emerging threats and mitigation strategies. Furthermore, private cybersecurity firms often host forums and conferences where professionals can network, share insights, and discuss the latest developments in the field. These collaborative efforts help manufacturers enhance their cybersecurity postures by learning from the experiences of others and staying informed about evolving threats. Across the state, school districts have found it harder and harder to fill some positions as many educators leave the profession and fewer educators join the workforce in their place. After Manchester City Schools in Adams County could not get candidates to apply for a high school science teaching job, the superintendent asked Jeff Crask - who was working at Wal-Mart after retiring from teaching nearly a decade ago - to come back to his old classroom. Crask tells us why he agreed to fill the need, and why he's decided to stay on for another year.DIVE DEEPER | To learn more about recommendations from OEA members about solutions to address the growing teacher recruitment and retention crisis, click here. Featured Education Matters guest: Jeff Crask, Manchester Ohio River Educators member Jeff Crask returned to teaching at Manchester High School in Adams County for the 2022-2023 school year, after retiring from teaching in 2014. He has agreed to return to Manchester High School for the 2023-2024 school year, too. Crask served three years in the US Army, 1975-1978, as a Medical Specialist, Stationed at Fort Leonard Wood, MO. After the Army, Crask earned his BS in Biology at Campbellsville University, Campbellsville, Kentucky, in 1984. Cabpbellsville University had about 600 students at the time. In 1986, he received an MS in Botany from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio.  Before taking his first teaching job as a chemistry teacher at Knott County Central High School in Hindman, Kentucky, Crask was the overnight DJ at rock station WKQQ in Lexington, Kentucky, which he described as his dream job at the time. Crask described his first year of teaching at Knott County Central High School as a nightmare, saying "I didn't know much about Chemistry and I sure didn't know how to discipline students." Crask had a much better first year when he became a Biology/Chemistry Teacher at Manchester High School, where he taught from 1992 until 2014. He didn't know anyone when he moved to the area for the job, but enjoyed the small class sizes, especially. His biggest class had 20 students, while his Anatomy class only had five students.  After 22 years at Manchester High School, Crask retired in 2014. He worked at Amazon and then Walmart. "I found out that I'm not very good at working really fast for 8-10 hours. Oh well," Crask said of the experience.  In 2022, Crask says his former coworkers from Manchester High School kept asking him to come back and teach again, or the students weren't going to have a Biology teacher, so after some soul-searching he told them he would. Crask says he had a great year and will teach at least one more. "It was nice to use the science equipment again," he said. Crask has three grown children, James, Juliana, and Jack. James teaches Kindergarten in Portsmouth, Ohio! SUBSCRIBE | Click here to subscribe to Education Matters on Apple Podcasts or click here to subscribe on Google podcasts so you don't miss a thing. Tom digs into the economics and what stands in the way of scale for Junkdrop. Walter talks about who he hires and how he finds them. He talks about how important having fun is to his business. Walter talks about having to fire people. Walter tells how important earned media like being on the Today show and being written up in the Tennessean has been to his growth. Walter talks about using Google ad words. Tom tells how he felt taken advantage of by another junk removal business. Walter tells about how 1-800-Got-Junk revolutionized the junk business with their simple value—point and it's gone. Walter has taken that idea and added the charity angle so people can feel good about where the junk goes after it's picked up. Tom talks about creating a junk removal as a subscription business.  Walter talks about why he started his business and how he was able to pick who he's competing against. He tells how he had no capital when he started and how he coordinated with a local charity and used his own pick-up. Walter talks about hoarder houses and how strange the work can get. Walter tells how obsessed he gets when he loses a bid. Tom compares competitive intelligence to a musician who gets inspiration from other musicians. Tom describes how he was inspired by his old boss who was generous with his time and would talk to anyone who had a business in health tech. Walter closes out by telling us what he wishes he knew when he started the business that he knows now.

Here is a new look at the presidency of Gerald Ford and the post-Watergate era, through the lens of the US Constitution's Separation of Powers. And to walk us through that material with fresh eyes, we have Dr. Alex Hindman, Ph.D., a professor at College of the Holy Cross (where Clarence Thomas went for his undergrad) in Worcester, Massachusetts. Dr. Hindman has a book called "Gerald Ford and the Separation of Powers: Preserving the Constitutional Presidency in the Post-Watergate Period", published by Lexington Press, and that is the focus of our conversation. The book is on Amazon. But please support your local book dealer. As an aside, one of the members of my dissertation committee, the late great Michael Uhlmann, served as a political appointee high up in the Department of Justice in the Ford Administration. He was Senate-confirmed Assistant Attorney General, and the other Assistant Attorney General he served with under Ford was a man named Antonin Scalia, who later became a professor, a federal appellate judge in the D.C. Circuit under Reagan, and then, of course, an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court. Their friendship I think began there serving under Ford. The Republican Professor is a pro-looking-at-the-presidency-with-fresh-eyes, pro-Separation-of-Powers, pro-Constitutional-contemplation podcast. Therefore, welcome Dr. Alex Hindman, Ph.D., of College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts ! The Republican Professor is produced and hosted by Dr. Lucas J. Mather, Ph.D.
