Japan's digital watches massively disrupted the Swiss watch market. So, an entry level fashion watch is created to save the day. Swatch! Dave Young: Welcome to the Empire Builders Podcast, teaching business owners the not-so-secret techniques that took famous businesses from mom-and-pop to major brands. Stephen Semple is a marketing consultant, story collector, and storyteller. I'm Stephen's sidekick and business partner, Dave Young. Before we get into today's episode, a word from our sponsor, which is, well, it's us. But we're highlighting ads we've written and produced for our clients, so here's one of those. [Waukee Feet Ad] Dave Young: Welcome back to the Empire Realtors podcast. Dave Young here alongside Stephen Semple. And as usual, Stephen has whispered the topic into my ear as the five-second countdown commenced. So, I have three seconds to come up with my initial reaction to the brand is that we're going to discuss. And my recollection for this one is ... Let me tell you what it is first. It's Swatch. Remember the watches? And my recollection of it is they were just too damn cool for me. Stephen Semple: I mean, you're not a fashionista, Dave? Dave Young: I never have been. But here's the thing. I think by the time ... you'll have to fill in the dates here, but I think by the time I got out of college and was making my way in small market radio, the point of having fashionable timepieces on your wrist, which is ... was like, "That's just too cool for me. No." I recognize it as a cool idea that was going to make somebody a gazillion dollars. Stephen Semple: Yeah. Dave Young: But it wasn't going to be my dollars that got it done. Stephen Semple: Well, you're somewhat accurate, and somewhat aren't because I believe that we are around the same age. I might be a tick older, but it was fall of 82 when Swatch was launched, but they became really big, late eighties, early nineties. Dave Young: So, yeah, I graduated college in 84, and so, yeah, by the late eighties ... and remember, I was in Western Nebraska. Stephen Semple: And there was no Amazon. Dave Young: Dude, Gone With the Wind has just now arrived at theaters in Western Nebraska. When you think about the good old days, they haven't even hit Western Nebraska yet. They're still waiting. So, go ahead. Stephen Semple: As I got looking at Swatch, here's the thing that's really remarkable about Swatch is how much they changed the watch industry. It is an idea that was remarkable because not only did it change the watch industry, it saved the Swiss watch industry. Dave Young: Oh, I believe it. Yeah. Stephen Semple: The change that came about was incredible. If we go back pre-Swatch, the idea of a watch is it was a single purchase item. Dave Young: There's a time ... yeah. Stephen Semple: People own one wristwatch. Dave Young: Yeah, and you decided, do you want a leather watch band or one of those metal expandy ones? Stephen Semple: Yeah. Dave Young: Which watch guy are you? Stephen Semple: Right. And Rolex, for example, was not even a high-end luxury product at that time. It was an expensive watch, but it was not a luxury watch. It was not an aspirational one. And it's really interesting. Even if you take a look at Rolex's advertisements from the seventies versus the ones 2000 and on, they're a very, very different feel. One was it's rugged, and you can use it, and they aligned with certain sports such as diving and things along that lines. You look at how it's positioned today, and it's a fashion statement. Dave Young: Yeah, I see that. Stephen Semple: It's very, very different. In 10 years following the launch of Swatch, they became the largest watch brand on the planet. Dave Young: Well, I'm sure we're going to hear about tons of imitators. And they hit right in that slice of time. There's a couple of decades,

Andrew Wells is the third generation of the iconic American yarn manufacturer Brown Sheep Company. Living near the family business outside Scotts Bluff, Nebraska, he grew up giving tours and sweeping the floors when his parents, Peggy and Robert Wells, ran the business. His grandfather, Harlan Brown, had been a sheep and lamb farmer before deciding to begin processing wool yarns, a business he eventually passed along to his daughter and son-in-law. (The company is named not for the color of the sheep but for the Brown family.) In 1980, the following ad appeared in Spin Off magazine: Sheep Company Starts Mill The Brown Sheep Co. of Mitchell, Nebraska, has started a spinning mill. They have wools in gray, black and white and knitting and weaving yarns for sale. For more information write: The Brown Sheep Co., Rt. 1, Mitchell, NE 69357. Send $1 for samples. The risk that Harlan Brown took in 1980 put the family on a course to become an important resource for American crafters. Decades later, Andrew and his family are pushing their commitment to A Building on Tradition The first five decades of Brown Sheep Company have been times of decline for both natural fibers and American manufacturing, but the Wells family continues producing wool yarn. Mantaining consistent quality in the face of such seismic shifts has called on the family's creativity and perseverance. Instead of straying from their core values by moving production overseas or reducing quality, they continue purchasing wool from the American West and creating yarn in their small-town facility. Brown Sheep Company performs as much of the processing as they can do themselves, from spinning through dyeing and packaging. Finding a dye house has become a challenge for many yarn manufacturers, and Western Nebraska has a dry climate with scant water resources. Brown Sheep Company keeps the process within their own hands by doing all their own dyeing. Their dye facility conserves water and energy by filtering waste water to use for the next dye bath (even if it's a different color). The company stores a sample length of each dye lot for years, just to make sure that each skein of Lamb's Pride or Nature Spun will match the same colorway that you bought years ago. The choice of fiber reflects Brown Sheep Company's philosophy, too. Instead of chasing ultrafine fibers that prove less durable in finished goods, Andrew travels to the Center of the Nation Wool Warehouse in South Dakota to choose soft wool in grades appropriate for hats, mittens, scarves, and sweaters. Lamb's Pride blends in some mohair for luster, drape, and durability. The easy-care classics Cotton Fleece and Cotton Fine include enough wool to stay light and elastic, which makes them popular for summer and baby items as well as weaving. Their newest yarn, Harborside Aran, is composed of four plies for a substantial yarn inspired by Irish sweaters; the palette of 17 colors has a rich, slightly heathered look. On the Needles and Beyond These days, Brown Sheep yarns may be most popular for knitting and crochet, but the company has always served a variety of fiber crafts. Lamb's Pride and other non-superwash wool yarns are go-to essentials for fulling (knitted or crocheted feltmaking). The company offers a number of their yarns wound on cones to make them accessible to weavers from pin loom to rigid heddle to multi-shaft. Brown Sheep Company's yarns have been used in weaving since the very beginning, when Harlan Brown sold his yarns to Diné (Navajo) weavers out of his car on his first sales trip. Diné weavers continue to use Brown Sheep yarns in their handwoven textiles, and they are an important partner for the company. Closer to home, the company's Director of Merchandising—and Andrew's wife—Brittany Wells has fallen in love with weaving and design. In addition to designing for magazines such as Handwoven and Little Looms, she created an officially registered pattern for Scotts Bluff County Tartan. Andrew and Brittany's young sons are the fourth generation of the Brown-Wells family to work in the family business—so far, as models. In this spotlight episode, Andrew and Brittany talk about the process of making high-quality wool yarns, the impact that Brown Sheep Company has in the American craft landscape, and what makes them more excited than ever to carry on the family tradition. [Travis Crawford Ad] Dave Young: Welcome to the Empire Builders Podcast. I'm Dave Young. I'm here with Steven Semple, and we're going to talk about an empire that was built, that's why we call it the Empire Builders, in case you hadn't caught onto that whole thing about why we're named what we are. Good morning, Steven. How are you? Stephen Semple: Wow, you're really on it this morning. Dave Young: I'm not on a... People ask, "Is that scripted?" Oh gosh, no. Isn't it obvious? You've whispered our subject for the day in my ear just as we started the countdown, and it instantly brought back memories of trips to Austin, Texas, with my children back in the early 2000s. Probably back around the turn of the century, young man, shortly after. Stephen Semple: Really? Dave Young: Mm-hmm. When Julie and I first traveled down to Wizard Academy, we had four kids at home. And this was when Wizard Academy was still down in Butte, at Roy's office. So the easiest way to get there was down I-35, if you're familiar with Austin. Stephen Semple: Right. Okay. Dave Young: Well, right at... I think it's at Slaughter and I-35. We had to make a stop every time as we headed south at a Krispy Kreme Donuts. Stephen Semple: At a Krispy Kreme. All right. Dave Young: Because we didn't have a Krispy Kreme donuts back in Western Nebraska. There probably still isn't one. Stephen Semple: There's no question. They're far more concentrated in the south of [inaudible 00:03:00] although another city that has a ton of them is New York City. Dave Young: Really? Stephen Semple: Yeah. When I was doing the speaking engagement this summer at NASDAQ... So first of all, there's a really neat one right off of Times Square. I swear, you couldn't go five minutes on Manhattan without bumping into a Krispy Kreme. They were everywhere. Dave Young: Really? Stephen Semple: Yeah, they were absolutely everywhere in New York. Dave Young: In case the listener hasn't figured it out, today's topic is Krispy Kreme donuts. Stephen Semple: I guess we never had [inaudible 00:03:30] announce that, did we? Dave Young: What we loved about it... I mean... Shoot, I'm raising kids, and everybody ate donuts, right? But we had a place in our hometown called Daylight Donuts, which I think was a small franchise. And you could get donuts at the grocery store. You could get the boxes of donuts, but man, there was just nothingness. And Dunkin was around, but there was just like the Krispy Kreme had the green light, red light thing on the drive-up. And if the green light was on, it means they're making donuts right now. And yours will still be hot from the grease when they hand it to you out the window. And it was like, "That was an amazing thing." Stephen Semple: Yeah, they've done incredible. They were founded by two brothers, Vernon and Louis Randolph, and Winston-Salem on July 13th, 1937. And today, they have 1400 locations. They got 21,000 employees, and they do a half a billion in revenues. So they've done real well. Dave Young: I think half a billion's empire sized. Stephen Semple: Well, yeah, it's a lot of donuts. That's a lot of donuts. Dave Young: It's a lot of donuts. The other thing that was really cool about what's go...

The concept of NIL (Name, Image, and Likeness) has now reached its third year of existence. Money is flowing, creating an uneven playing field in college athletics. Let's be honest the playing field was uneven before NIL. Coaches and administrators from SEC (Southeastern Conference) have marched up Capitol Hill, urging for legislative intervention. Meanwhile, the NCAA is attempting to assert its authority by emphasizing that their rules supersede state laws for member schools. Additionally, the IRS has raised concerns about the non-profit status of collectives, recognizing them as pay-for-play entities, potentially jeopardizing their tax-exempt status. In this episode of the Doc Talk podcast, presented by Betfred Sports, Dr. Rob Zatechka and Travis Justice host Connor Orr in their basement studio. Connor, a registered sports agent and partner at the law firm Orr and Horgan in Omaha, offers valuable insights. The future of NIL faces numerous challenges and uncertainties. The past three years have seen significant changes, and it is likely that more changes will follow in the next three years. Our discussion shed light on these issues, revealing that finding solutions to the NIL puzzle, even if they are kept within the collegiate system, requires dedicated effort. After listening to this episode of the Doc Talk Podcast presented by Betfred Sports, Huskers fans may be astounded by what they hear.  Iowa Western Community College Head Coach Scott Strohmeier is our guest. Scott is the 2022 Nationa Junior College Coach of the Year. Iowa Western won its second national title under Strohmeir in 14 years. The Reivers have also finished runner-up twice under Strohmeir, the IWCC's only head coach since the program started in 2009.  Nebraska fans may need to remember that Tom Osborne was instrumental in Iowa Western getting a football program. He was a consultant for former IWCC President Dr. Dan Kinney. At the time, many people thought Iowa Western would become a pipeline of players to Lincoln. After all, there are no junior colleges in Nebraska that play football.  However, the story plays out differently. Iowa Western has created a pipeline for sure, just not to Lincoln. You will have to listen to the podcast to get the exact number of Iowa Western Players that have worn the Scarlet and Cream; the number may shock you. For the record, Stohmeier has put over 400 players into D1 Programs over the past 14 years and close to 100 at Power 5 Programs.  Dr. Rob Zatechka and Travis Justice discuss his relationship with previous Nebraska coaches with Coach Strohmeier and what he expects moving forward with Matt Ruhle and the new Nebraska staff. Every college football program has its share of stars living off name recognition for generations. Rarely is there a position group that carries the same clout with fans.  At Nebraska, you have three Heisman Trophy Winners and several Outland and Lombardi Trophy winners. Of course, all those winners continue to sign autographs and take photos with fans. But "The Pipeline" seems to evoke the emotions of greatness, dominance, athleticism, nastiness, and championships with Husker fans. Why? Probably because Nebraska has struggled for the last 20 years, and a big reason is average to poor offensive line play. The original "Pipeline" was made up of: Rob Zatechka Zach Wiegert Brendan Stai Aaron Graham Joel Wilks These five will be at the Hail Varsity Club in La Vista on Friday night, April 21, from 6-9 PM. What do you do to stop people from drinking to much alcohol? Get them to travel, of course. Witness the birth of the travel agency. Dave Young: Welcome to The Empire Builders Podcast, teaching business owners the not so secret techniques that took famous businesses from mom and pop to major brands. Stephen Semple is a marketing consultant, story collector, and storyteller. I'm Stephen's sidekick and business partner, Dave Young. Before we get into today's episode, a word from our sponsor, which is, well, it's us, but we're highlighting ads we've written and produced for our clients. So here's one of those. [Travis Crawford Ad] Dave Young: Welcome back to The Empire Builders Podcast, Dave Young here with Stephen Semple. And you've got me stumped on today's topic, Stephen, right? Stephen Semple: It doesn't happen very often. Dave Young: And it either means that you're finding nuggets that nobody's ever found or we've hit the bottom of the barrel, but I don't think we've hit that. You said, "This is Thomas Cook Travel," and you thought I might have heard of it, but you failed to understand that I spent my formative years in Western Nebraska where there was no travel agent. There was no travel. In fact, tomorrow Julie and I will have been married 20, no, excuse me, 31 years. Stephen Semple: Wow. Dave Young: And our first date, we drove a hundred miles to go to a Starbucks, Baskin-Robbins and a Taco Bell. So, travel agent, where? What? Stephen Semple: Your travel agent was your gas station. Dave Young: I've heard of such things. So do tell me more about this Thomas Cook fellow. Stephen Semple: Well, they existed for 178 years until going defunct in 2019 so they were around a long time. And it was founded by Thomas Cook on July 5th, 1841 in Leicester, England. And it was a pioneer in the travel space. That's what makes it interesting. Thomas Cook created the idea of middle-class travel, group travel, and the travel agency. They created that. He really was the first. Thomas Cook was a Baptist minister from the Midlands of England and one day while waiting for a stagecoach he conceived the idea that travel, and specifically the educational benefits of travel, could help working people be weaned off the fiend of alcohol, as he put it. Dave Young: I mean, these days you travel to go find places to get alcohol. Stephen Semple: Well, I know, it seems odd, doesn't it? He was quoted as saying, "What a glorious thing that it would be if the newly developed power of railways and locomotion could be subservient to the cause of the Temperance Movement." It started his thinking around it because on July 5th, 1841 Cook arranged for a train to carry 570 temperance supporters 11 miles from Leicester to Loughborough and back for a shilling. And the price included tickets and food, all-inclusive. So over the next three summers Cook created more and more outings for temperance groups and Sunday school children, and it became so successful that the Midlands County Railway Company offered Cook an arrangement as long as he provided passengers. Dave Young: Cool. Stephen Semple: So Cook started a business under his name that organized rail excursions for pleasure, and he took a percentage of the revenue so basically became the world's first travel agent. Dave Young: Yeah. Stephen Semple: He also took this step further. He created first class and second class tickets. Dave Young: Oh, there you go. Stephen Semple: So here's the other thing he realized is, travel, in that day, people weren't traveling. So to stimulate travel, what did you have to do? He created a 60-page handbook on journeys. This was the first travel brochure. So people are starting to travel, "Well, I got to stimulate the travel, so I need to create a travel brochure." He began advertising the idea of travel, and he's quoted as saying,

Spring practice for the Huskers starts on Monday, March 20. In the past Spring seasons, fans were focused on the quarterback battle or who the top running back will be. Instead, everyone will be dialed in on new Head Coach Matt Rhule and his staff this year.  The expectations at Nebraska have never changed. However, it's no secret that the results have not matched the expectations, and that's why the Huskers are starting over with their sixth new Head Coach since 1998.  On this edition of the Doc Talk Podcast presented by BetFred Sports, Travis Justice and Dr. Rob Zatehcka sit down with Mitch Sherman from The Athletic and discuss the expectations for Spring Practice and if we are going to learn anything about what this team is capable of doing. Also, how many players will be leaving after the Spring Season? It might be more than you think! Right now, there are not enough scholarships to go around.   Mitch also gives us his insight into the recruitment of quarterback Dylan Riola. Riola made a big splash on his recent visit to Lincoln. Was his high visibility at the basketball an indication of his comfortability and maybe showing his cards on his college selection? We discuss.  Betfred is THE local book for Eastern Nebraska; drive to Iowa. College athletics is a BIG business. So here's some news that will shock no one; it will keep getting bigger.  When Trev Alberts took the job at Nebraska to be the Athletic Director, he wanted to surround himself with people he trusted. So one of the first people he turned to was Doug Ewald. The fancy title Ewald has is Executive Associate Athletic Director-Chief Financial Officer. In layman's terms, he's the bean counter for a budget of well over $ 100 million. On this edition of the Doc Talk Podcast presented by Betfred Sports, Dr. Rob Zatechka and Travis Justice sit down and talk money with Doug. The ever-changing landscape of NIL and what the future holds for paying players. Has selling alcohol at Pinnacle Bank Arena been the financial windfall some people thought it would be? And with USC and UCLA joining the Big 10, what does this mean for travel budgets and the strain on student-athletes?  There's a lot to digest in our hour-long conversation. But one thing is for sure; there's more to an athletic department than most of us even know.  Betfred is THE local book for Eastern Nebraska; drive to Iowa.
