Get YDS Merch before July 25!!Support us on Patreon! This week on Your Diet Sucks, we're talking hormones: what they are, what they do, and why they've become the latest scapegoat for every diet culture grift on the internet. From adrenal fatigue (not real) to seed cycling (also not real), Zoë and Kylee cut through the pseudoscience and explain what actually supports hormone health—like eating enough, managing stress, and getting some damn sleep. We also take a look at the unhinged history of hormone manipulation (yes, monkey testicle transplants come up), why cortisol isn't your enemy, and what to do if your hormones actually feel off. B. In this episode, I talk to Pirmin, an entrepreneur who recently uprooted his life in Berlin to go on a multi-month European adventure with his wife and young son. The discussion centers around how Pirmin has adapted his health and fitness routines to this new, more flexible lifestyle.Pirmin explains that his previous life was highly structured around work, with fitness often squeezed in late at night. But after becoming a father, he had to rethink his approach. In the beginning of the trip, Pirmin felt "completely lost" trying to juggle everything. However, he quickly realized he needed to fall back on the habits and routines that had worked for him in the past. The key was getting up earlier each morning to fit in a workout before his family woke up. Pirmin notes that he never considered himself a morning person, but found that with a bit of adjustment, he was able to make it a consistent habit. He also packed minimalist workout equipment like resistance bands and a yoga mat that he could use anywhere.Pirmin emphasizes the importance of building in flexibility, acknowledging that with a young child, unexpected things will come up that disrupt the schedule. Rather than getting frustrated when a workout has to be shortened or missed, he's learned to let go of perfection and just do what he can. The mantra of "deciding what to suck at for a while" has helped him maintain a balanced perspective.Nutrition has also required some adaptation, especially now that Pirmin is surrounded by the temptations of French bakeries and local wines. However, he's found that maintaining a few anchors - like his go-to lentil-based lunches - helps prevent things from spiraling out of control. Pirmin allows himself to indulge occasionally, but tries to be mindful and avoid letting it become the new norm.Throughout the conversation, Pirmin shares valuable insights about the compounding effects of consistency, as well as the dangers of the opposite - how bad habits can quickly spiral. He encourages listeners to start small and build momentum, rather than striving for perfection right away.Whether you're a busy professional, a parent, or simply someone looking to optimize your lifestyle, Pirmin's story and strategies provide plenty of relatable and actionable takeaways. His adaptability and resilience in the face of major life changes are truly inspiring.

A pioneer in the field of psychopharmacology, David's groundbreaking work opens up intriguing possibilities for treating disorders like addiction, depression, and anxiety. We walk through David's journey, from his surprising discoveries to the complex tensions he navigated when making policy suggestions to reduce alcohol's harms. Our candid chat with David takes us down memory lane to when he chaired the Home Office Advisory Council's scientific committee and the palpable shift in his life. We delve into the dichotomy of alcohol, seen as one of the most harmful drugs, yet legal, and the ripple effects of alcohol advertising on underage drinking. Pioneering research by Lachmayr and Jürgen Rehm is put under the microscope as we explore the startling link between alcohol and at least seven types of cancer, with an added focus on cirrhosis of the liver. Canada's new alcohol guidelines took a radically different approach. Most health recommendations provide advice on safe amounts of the substance in question. But Canada's 2023 Guidance on Alcohol and Health tells us there is no safe amount when it comes to drinking spirits, wine or beer. Sidestepping any suggestion for specific consumption levels, they instead inform Canadians about the risk we incur for an alcohol-caused death at given consumption levels per week. To learn about the implications for us all, Medcan chief medical officer Dr. Peter Nord walks us through interviews with guideline coauthors Dr. Tim Naimi, physician and director of the Canadian Institute for Substance Use Research, and Dr. Jürgen Rehm, epidemiologist at CAMH and professor at the University of Toronto. We also check in with guideline critic Dr. Dan Malleck, historian and health sciences professor at Brock University.  Check out the episode webpage for links and more info.

Ten states and Washington D.C. currently support medical aid in dying for terminally-ill patients. Advocates and lawmakers like Public Health Committee Co-Chair and State Sen. Dr. Saud Anwar are hoping Connecticut is closer than ever to becoming the eleventh state to adopt a medical aid-in-dying law. Connecticut Public health reporter Sujata Srinivasan spoke with Sen. Anwar about the plan to include additional restrictions around age limits and physician sign-offs, that he hopes will help the bill pass the Judiciary Committee, where a similar bill stopped last session. Aid-in-dying bills have been proposed in Connecticut more than a dozen times over the last thirty years. Longtime NPR host and journalist Diane Rehm has touched on her mother's death and her late husband's battle with Parkinson's Disease, setting out to explore the issue of patient autonomy in her book, When My Time Comes: Conversations About Whether Those Who Are Dying Should Have the Right to Determine When Life Should End. This hour, Rehm and Srinivasan will join us to discuss the right-to-die movement where we live, along with CT News Junkie editor-in-chief Christine Stuart. Plus, a preview of the biennial state budget with Stuart and News 12 political reporter John Craven. The topic of sweet taste and the relationship to diet and health is one that has been of interest to food and nutrition scientists for many years. To assist in reducing sugar consumption, some authoritative bodies currently recommend reducing the consumption of sweet-tasting foods and beverages, regardless of the source of the sweet taste (i.e., caloric or low-calorie sweeteners). These recommendations stem from concerns that human attraction to sweetness may be a potential risk for developing less healthy eating patterns. Despite the need to measure sweetness of the diet to help us further understand the relationship between nutrition and health and sweetness, currently there is no consensus method to measure the total sweetness of the diet. There are well-established sensory techniques in laboratory settings for individual foods, but agreement on the optimal approach for measuring the sweetness of the total diet is lacking, particularly for large-scale population-based studies. Recently a practical approach for estimating sweetness of the diet was built onto a sweet taste database to evaluate trends in the sweetness of the diet in U.S. children and adults. This method can also be used to better understand the impact of dietary sweetness on diet quality and health outcomes. Tune in to this episode to learn about: Psychobiological determinants of eating behavior How sweetness is defined How sweetness can be measured Why it's important to study sweetness and understand its implications Trends in the overall sweetness of the U.S. diet The contribution of low-calorie sweeteners to the sweetness of the diet Implications of recent research conducted on sweetness Future research on sweetness Full shownotes and resources at: https://soundbitesrd.com/214

Tom is a Fourth Grade New Teacher Intern at Chadwick International. He began his teaching career in an English Academy in Incheon, South Korea. After one year of teaching in South Korea, he and his now fiance moved to Vietnam. Tom spent the next five years teaching ESOL to anyone that would listen. He found his niche using Total Physical Response to teach vocabulary and grammar structures to young learners. After six years of teaching ESOL, Tom earned his teaching credential and began job searching at international schools. He now helps out in Mr. White and Ms. Pia's classrooms by day and hangs out with his dog Mr. Jose, by night. He's becoming more and more comfortable with the PYP and inquiry-based learning every day.
