Did you know that alcohol works on the GABA system? Such intricate mechanisms and their implications for brain research are the focus of our insightful conversation with David Nutt. A pioneer in the field of psychopharmacology, David's groundbreaking work opens up intriguing possibilities for treating disorders like addiction, depression, and anxiety. We walk through David's journey, from his surprising discoveries to the complex tensions he navigated when making policy suggestions to reduce alcohol's harms. Our candid chat with David takes us down memory lane to when he chaired the Home Office Advisory Council's scientific committee and the palpable shift in his life. We delve into the dichotomy of alcohol, seen as one of the most harmful drugs, yet legal, and the ripple effects of alcohol advertising on underage drinking. Pioneering research by Lachmayr and Jürgen Rehm is put under the microscope as we explore the startling link between alcohol and at least seven types of cancer, with an added focus on cirrhosis of the liver. The conversation takes a thrilling turn as we dissect David's efforts in developing Arca-Rell, a promising alcohol-free alternative. In the midst of discussing the nuances of alcohol and potential treatments, we take a deep dive into an emerging trend - the therapeutic use of psychedelics. From their role in anti-war protests to their potential in lifting lifelong depression, we navigate the complex terrain of psychedelics. Canada's new alcohol guidelines took a radically different approach. Most health recommendations provide advice on safe amounts of the substance in question. But Canada's 2023 Guidance on Alcohol and Health tells us there is no safe amount when it comes to drinking spirits, wine or beer. Sidestepping any suggestion for specific consumption levels, they instead inform Canadians about the risk we incur for an alcohol-caused death at given consumption levels per week. To learn about the implications for us all, Medcan chief medical officer Dr. Peter Nord walks us through interviews with guideline coauthors Dr. Tim Naimi, physician and director of the Canadian Institute for Substance Use Research, and Dr. Jürgen Rehm, epidemiologist at CAMH and professor at the University of Toronto. We also check in with guideline critic Dr. Dan Malleck, historian and health sciences professor at Brock University.  Check out the episode webpage for links and more info.

Ten states and Washington D.C. currently support medical aid in dying for terminally-ill patients. Advocates and lawmakers like Public Health Committee Co-Chair and State Sen. Dr. Saud Anwar are hoping Connecticut is closer than ever to becoming the eleventh state to adopt a medical aid-in-dying law. Connecticut Public health reporter Sujata Srinivasan spoke with Sen. Anwar about the plan to include additional restrictions around age limits and physician sign-offs, that he hopes will help the bill pass the Judiciary Committee, where a similar bill stopped last session. Aid-in-dying bills have been proposed in Connecticut more than a dozen times over the last thirty years. M., Maidorn, M., Martinez-Carranza, M., Hosseini, H., Saal, K. A., Oleksiievets, N., Prigge, M., Tsukanov, R., Stenmark, P., Fornasiero, E. F., Opazo, F. Abstract: Imaging of living synapses has relied for over two decades on the overexpression of synaptic proteins fused to fluorescent reporters. This strategy changes the stoichiometry of synaptic components and ultimately affects synapse physiology. To overcome these limitations, here we introduce a nanobody that binds the calcium sensor synaptotagmin-1 (NbSyt1). This nanobody functions in living neurons as an intrabody (iNbSyt1) and is minimally invasive, leaving synaptic transmission almost unaffected, as demonstrated by the crystal structure of the NbSyt1 bound to synaptotagmin-1 and by our physiological data. Its single-domain nature enables the generation of protein-based fluorescent reporters, as we showcase here by measuring spatially-localized presynaptic Ca2+ with an NbSyt1- jGCaMP8 chimera. Moreover, its small size makes the NbSyt1 ideal for various super-resolution imaging methods. Overall, NbSyt1 is a versatile binder that will enable imaging in cellular and molecular neuroscience at a higher precision than possible in the past, over multiple spatiotemporal scales. Sound Bites A Nutrition Podcast

The topic of sweet taste and the relationship to diet and health is one that has been of interest to food and nutrition scientists for many years. To assist in reducing sugar consumption, some authoritative bodies currently recommend reducing the consumption of sweet-tasting foods and beverages, regardless of the source of the sweet taste (i.e., caloric or low-calorie sweeteners). These recommendations stem from concerns that human attraction to sweetness may be a potential risk for developing less healthy eating patterns. Despite the need to measure sweetness of the diet to help us further understand the relationship between nutrition and health and sweetness, currently there is no consensus method to measure the total sweetness of the diet. There are well-established sensory techniques in laboratory settings for individual foods, but agreement on the optimal approach for measuring the sweetness of the total diet is lacking, particularly for large-scale population-based studies. Recently a practical approach for estimating sweetness of the diet was built onto a sweet taste database to evaluate trends in the sweetness of the diet in U.S. children and adults. This method can also be used to better understand the impact of dietary sweetness on diet quality and health outcomes. This week during Recess Duty we talk with Tom Rehm. We discuss how and what coaching looks like within the classroom. We share our thoughts on getting students to self-adjust in their own learning and how we might not only get their best but also get them to strive for more each and every time. Tom is a Fourth Grade New Teacher Intern at Chadwick International. He began his teaching career in an English Academy in Incheon, South Korea. After one year of teaching in South Korea, he and his now fiance moved to Vietnam. Tom spent the next five years teaching ESOL to anyone that would listen. He found his niche using Total Physical Response to teach vocabulary and grammar structures to young learners. After six years of teaching ESOL, Tom earned his teaching credential and began job searching at international schools. He now helps out in Mr. White and Ms. Pia's classrooms by day and hangs out with his dog Mr. Jose, by night. He's becoming more and more comfortable with the PYP and inquiry-based learning every day. Premium Sponsor Thank you to a premium sponsor, TNG Coaching! TNG Coaching's vision is to teach values through activity and experience. To guide creativity, instill confidence, champion self-worth, and celebrate identity. This journey begins by reflecting on our own performance. By collecting our thoughts and feelings on paper, both positive and negative, we begin to discern ways to respond to challenges. Opening a personal dialogue and sharing concerns has been proven to create deeper bonds with peers. Journaling how these relationships evolve can help assign roles and build the support structure every team needs to function effectively. When complete, your journal will stand as a lasting reminder of your commitment to your cause and your ambitions for personal and professional growth. German Paralympic great Markus Rehm speaks openly about a life which has seen him break every barrier that has stood in his way.  Rehm, the multiple-time Paralympic Games champion in long jump and world record holder at 8.48m, reflects on the hurdles he still has to overcome to reach his ambitions.  “I would like to perform at the Olympic Games,” he admits. “Not because I want to be an Olympic athlete, I am a Paralympic athlete and I'm proud of it. But I want to compete at the Olympic Games to prove that it's worth getting some tickets for our events, that it's worth watching our events.”   Speaking with Andy Stevenson, Rehm also reveals how he is helping others to defy the odds in his day job as a prosthetist.  “I had a child - seven years old - who had an accident with a truck and lost both his legs. I met him in the hospital and if I see him now, he's doing everything. He walks on his two prosthesis, now he's started Paralympic swimming and it's just great to see the process.”   Rehm also discusses his life as the blade jumper, his ambitions for the future and some secrets about what prepares him for his biggest competitions.   Learning topics for this episode include overcoming odds, breaking barriers, providing an example, determination and scientific advancements.    Allianz is a long-standing partner of the International Paralympic Committee.
