For those who've contributed to or read Alpinist over the last 18 years, Katie Ives needs little introduction. Ives started at the magazine in 2004. After reading the Chicago Manual of Style cover to cover, she took on the roles of overqualified intern and copyeditor. She became editor in chief in 2012, a position she held until 2022. Ives is regarded as a tireless researcher, and as a mentor to the many writers she collaborated with during her nearly two decades at Alpinist.  Katie has earned renown for her command of written language. Her book “Imaginary Peaks: The Riesenstein [REE-zen-stein] Hoax and Other Mountain Dreams” was published by The Mountaineers in 2021. It received a Special Jury Mention at the 2022 Banff Mountain Book Competition. Katie recently moved to Colorado to be closer to the American Alpine Club Library while she works on her next book.  In this episode, Katie takes us on a journey through her 18-year Alpinist tenure. She brings us to some of the imaginary peaks she  explores in her book, and the Flatirons looming outside her office window today. She laments all the books she left behind during her recent move West, and reminds us that not all answers can be found on the Internet. This episode is brought to you by The North Face. Today on episode 43 I'm happy to have Chris Weidner, a long-time Colorado Front Range local, writer, husband, and father. This conversation is special to me for unexpected reasons. I hoped to interview Chris about his career as a writer, but what emerged was something far more interesting, and admittedly, brave on Chris's part as it relates to career and finances. Chris is shockingly frank in many aspects of this conversation in ways I couldn't have imagined. I really thank him for that, and I hope you will enjoy this truly fascinating discussion about his life, climbing, family, and career. Topics Discussed with Chris WeidnerChris and Heather's first child, Dallas, and the fascinating origin story of his name. The importance of being an all-arounder in climbing, and Chris's recent alpine ambitionsThe importance of partnership in climbingEarly jobs to support climbing in Boulder, COA transition to writing and tips for getting publishedFinancial support and the unspoken reality of financial security in climbing and related careersThe creative benefits of procrastination?Writing routines and balancing with the climbing lifeFirst ascent ambitionsFitting travel into a training and work scheduleAdaptations for a new parentClimbing with a significant other who is equally drivenTips for aging climbersThe common comfort zone blind-spots of performance climbersSo much more! Support this project: Buy Me a CoffeeSubscribe to the website: SUBSCRIBE ME!Show Notes and Links at Clippingchains.com

Chris Weidner began climbing as a teenager in the Pacific Northwest and is no stranger to being pinned on the summit of Mt. Rainier in a storm. The 45-year-old climbs 5.14 sport routes and continues to establish new free routes on the Diamond of Longs Peak and elsewhere. He has also written more than 300 articles related to climbing—for the Boulder Daily Camera newspaper, Alpinist and other climbing magazines—since about 2007. Weidner recently told Alpinist Digital Editor Derek Franz, "I think it's important to say that, along with these close relationships and the family feeling that climbing has given me over the years, I feel like it's also made me value lightheartedness.... And it's helped me realize that there's pretty much nothing in life worth stressing too hard about.... The other thing it reminds me of is just how important it is to be kind to people."

It's game night at the Thundercling dinner table! Dave takes Fidi and return Sauce Night veterans, Lynn and Travis, through a couple of arduous trivia combat tours, the gang trying to hold it together after a few too many beers. First, Fidi hopes to take the lead in a lightning round of the Thunder Quiz. The contestants get 80 seconds to answer climbing trivia questions; some topical, some historical, and some embarrassingly personal. Dave is accused of nepotism, Fidi flexes a bit of muscle, and Travis begrudgingly surrenders ground. Between games the table erupts in some role playing of "climber wrongs." Spray, crowded crags, mansplaining, and wild crag dogs speed up the boozing and ratchet up the vitriol. It's what we wish we could say... Next, Travis and Lynn eye a rebound in a full round of Geo Party (we're not supposed to type "Jeopardy," for copyright reasons). The categories, "Oopsy Daisy...Chain," "Sharma Dharma," and "Holy Shit," bring some interesting answers and a couple of ridiculous stories. Travis comes out of the gate strong, Fidi shows some serious focus, and Lynn launches an improbable comeback. Thanks for listening to this curse-laden, booze-soaked, climbing ephemera-infused monstrosity! Maybe next time we'll skip the beer...but I doubt it. Although we'll have regularly scheduled programming up for the next couple months, tell us what you thought of game night! Want to pen an essay for Thundercling? Emily Harrington joins Chris and Brian for the 2016 USA Bouldering Nationals, where they filled a mind-bending 14+ hours of time behind the mics. Brian Runnells and Chris Weidner have been climbing for a long time. They've also been writing about climbing for a long time. Before his identity was finally sleuthed out, Brian was the one-man aggregating super-bot behind the website Climbing Narc. In a torturous twist, you can still visit the page, where the last post logged falls in April of 2015, reading, "Yes, I'm still alive..." In it's heyday, Climbing Narc rallied a massive following and was, at times, the most popular climbing website in the United States. Chris makes his living writing about climbing, no small feat. He's written for most of the major mags, all while logging a climbing-specific column for Boulder's The Daily Camera for 11 years. He and Jason Haas are just wrapping up Weidner's first guidebook effort for Boulder Canyon. In an interesting twist, the commentary "booth" brought the two of them together for Louder Than Eleven's broadcast of the 2015 Psicobloc competition. Like Madden and Summerall, they've worked together ever since. We talk about the experience of commentating for a sport like climbing and how the two of them got into the gig in the first place. We also chat about the famous blooper reels, any chances they'll be commentating for the upcoming Olympics, and how Brian finally contextualized the phrase, "Netflix and chill." Check out a blooper (or highlight??) reel here. Check out a 2014 Thundercling interview with the Narc here. Questions, comments, queries to write for Thundercling or join as a guest? Heather Weidner doesn't need an introduction, but this episode certainly does. When I recently watched a film made about Heather's ascent of China Doll, putting her into a small group of women to have climbed 14a on gear, I was left with a bad taste in my mouth. It seemed that given the current gender climate, the filmmakers, Jon Glassberg and Caroline Treadway, could have crafted a story that didn't depict Heather as so dependant on her husband, Chris Weidner, for not only support, but to also tell and show her how to climb the route. Shortly after, Heather wrote a blog post indicating that she felt similar upon seeing the film, and I knew I had to talk to her about it. The omissions, the contradictions, and the lessons.  You can find Heather online at www.heatherclimbs.com You can find Jon Glassberg and LT11 at www.lt11.com You can find Caroline Treadway at http://carolinetreadway.com/ You can see the film at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7vZG7FTDM9U You can read Heather's blogpost at https://heatherclimbs.com/2017/12/08/the-china-doll-contradiction-behind-the-scenes-of-the-film/ You can find us at www.powercompanyclimbing.com We don't tweet. It's been FOREVER since I published a podcast episode and I'm really sorry for the inconsistency! My surgery and ensuing weirdness has had me away from working very much at all, but I'm hoping to start putting podcasts up again on a regular basis. About Heather Alright, so this episode is with my friend, Heather Weidner (nee Robinson), who is a badass sport and trad climber, having redpointed Stockboy's Revenge (5.14b) in Rifle this summer and Must'a Been High (5.13c R) in Eldorado Canyon in Colorado soon after. She and her husband, Chris Weidner, are full time climbers living the dream, although Heather was a veterinarian for about 5 years before that. When I think of Heather, I think of a very sweet woman with a bullish determination to climb her projects. I also think of kneebarring, since she's a pro at it. Here's what we talked about: Her lack of fear and how that helps her climbing Whether kneebarring is "cheating" How her vegetarian diet affects her climbing Her longest (time) project and how she kept trying even when she felt defeated How she makes it as a full time climber Related Links Heather's site at www.heatherclimbs.com Heather's article for TrainingBeta, "Headstrong" Support The Podcast Check out the new Bouldering Strength and Power program for boulderers of all abilities!
