My family of four gather around our dining table aka Kitchen Table Studios to excitedly provide content. Listen as my children, husband and the "Tales From Two Townies" most requested, graciously provide content during a rousing Q & A game, expose family secrets, tell us why they know mom and dad love them, what are mom and dad not good at, lots of secret fast food content, what makes our kids laugh, what are least favorite article of clothing for each other is, the first thing we bought together and if Andrew and I were a traffic sign what would we be? A real look at our perfectly imperfect family dynamic.Emily Harrington, here! Mom, wife, retired communications liaison and host of the HyperLocal(s) Podcast. We saw the same episode of the same trash TV show. We thought the same thing as the same time. She reached out and I was ready to listen and record. Listen as this Champaign girl turned Bloomington-Normal resident returns to talk about the most controversial topic on the planet. Heated, political, polarizing and emotional. This one is all hers, however. The spring break we will never forget followed up by the summer that pushed the limits of friendship, adulting and keeping secrets. She bravely opens up about her unexpected teen pregnancy, the choice that followed, the decisions made, how she feels about the decision now as a mom, how she will teach her daughter about sex and promote an open line of communication and how she kept the choice quiet for so long. Most importantly, Natalie shares why she wanted to talk about it decades later. No more shame. No more secrets. No regrets...................................Please, please subscribe (so you know when new episodes drop) and share! By the time October 31st comes around it can feel like you've already been tricked and treated a dozen times. You're pooped, and your costumes are looking worse for the wear. This Halloween was no different—eventful would put it mildly. Listen as my husband and "Tales From Two Townies" interrupter talks creeping it real in our Halloween costumes, not breaking character in his Freddy Kruger ensemble, when your kiddo's costumes go from cute to scary/sassy, the family costume era, getting "dress down day" at a uniformed school wrong and what it is like for a mom to have too many brain files open and finally the story of the stolen skeleton and the "peaceful transaction" between two pissed parents, the perps and the Champaign, Urbana AND University of Illinois Police Departments. On one of our MANY road trips this summer, in the wee hours of the morning, we talk and talk and talk about everything and nothing. Listen as my husband and "Tales From Two Townies" segment producer talk more basement sewage problems, stress, the Illinois Football NIL deal, the band no one has ever heard of, the disaster of a camp drop off, Andrew's unfulfilled dreams of becoming a comedian while workshopping bits and finally listener complaints about the podcast content.I'd like to thank this episode's sponsor, Pixels by Emily. This pod is an oldie but a goodie. We pushed this episode back to release the Boston ep for timeliness reasons. When we have nothing left to talk about, we play a game. Art imitating life. We do this sometimes when walking or waiting impatiently for something. Listen as my husband and "Tales From Two Townies" segment star talk "bringing the funk, upping the energy and being a basic bitch," voice mocking and a Q&A game. Find out where we want to be in the future? What we want our legacy to be? What we value in a partner? What we value in a friend? The best moment of our lives? And who loves each other more than the day we got married?Thank you so much for listening! However your podcast host of choice allows, please positively: rate, review, comment and give all the stars! My husband, Andrew Harrington, and I podcast from our Boston hotel room. Our third guest, the hotel housekeeper, makes multiple off-MIC cameos. We are in Massachusetts in an effort to follow the Illini Basketball Team through March Madness. This obsession (of Andrews) leads to an achilleas injury from overuse of the gas pedal during these 14-hour up and back drives. Will the injury effect Andrew's marathon training? How did he fare in his past marathons? How did hernia surgery go and was Andrew a good nurse? The beginning of this "Tales From Two Townies" starts out rough with a placating apology from my male nurse. Lastly, Andrew the vigilante strikes again when calling the police on a naked man walking around the grocery store in Savoy. And. Another. Basement. Flood. Thank you so much for listening! Erin talks with tenacious rock climber Emily Harrington. Emily fell in love with rock climbing when she was a child and has never looked back (or down!). She's a force to be reckoned with on the cliffs and is five-time US National Champion in sport lead climbing. But when rock climbing is your job it can be hard to associate exercising with leisure time. Enter running. Emily loves running as a way of switching her perspective from a competitive one to a more meditative one and is here to teach us how to do the same. Emily regularly uploads her outdoor exploits, including walks with her new son, on Strava, the largest community of active people. My husband and defensive driving expert, Andrew Harrington, and I travel with our two little ones overnight (and well into the next day) from Illinois to Florida. While making our own memories, we reflect on the road trips of our own childhood. Listen as two townies hit the dusty trail already behind schedule and with bad moods setting in. Vomit, coffee-cup pees and an expensive meet-and-greet with a Georgia police officer are all documented periodically during the course of this long trip where my husband refuses to let me drive and verbalizes his resentment for his sleeping passengers. My husband and podcast super fan, Andrew Harrington, and I talk in detail about our terrible, horrible and no good experiences (mostly mine) with the once illegal, now legal and more and more prevalent, wacky tobacky. Listen as two townies swap stories of brazen lunch-hour busts in open air Jeeps, the smell of skunk permeating chemistry class, drinking lemon juice to kill a buzz, watching Die Hard and the clock, uncontrollable leg tweaking and the 72-hour high that I never came down from. Spoiler alert: It's not because you're a wuss. Adults rarely cry because of pain or physical discomfort, so why do so many of us cry during outdoor sports? It happens to almost everyone, of all genders, including professional athletes like skier Cody Townsend and climber Emily Harrington. Writer and athlete Gloria Liu investigated this phenomenon, which she calls the Sports Cry, to figure out what causes us to get teary out there and whether it helps or hinders us. About Caroline Treadway Caroline Treadway is a writer, a photographer, a film maker, and a climber. She recently released the documentary film “Light” about the eating disorder struggles of high profile rock climbers including Emily Harrington and Angie Payne. In this interview, we discuss why she made the film, what impact the film has made in her life, and then we go deeper into her own eating disorder as well as my experience with disordered eating behaviors. At the end, we even discuss what we thought about each other in times when we were both experiencing disordered eating behaviors – we've known each other for many years. This is an incredibly vulnerable conversation, and I want to thank Caroline for her willingness to be open about these topics and for her bravery for creating the film. According to one study, 16.5% of female rock climbers and 6% of male climbers experience some disordered eating behaviors. This is a big deal, and because shame is such a large component of disordered eating, this interview is a further attempt to destigmatize the topic and bring it into the “light.” If you have not seen the film yet, it's amazing–I loved it–and you can watch it for free here. Interview Details Why she made the film How the film has changed her and her career How we could approach someone (or not) who we're worried about in regards to their eating Her experience with ED and how it affected her body and mental health How she ended up in the hospital How she would've wanted to be approached about her ED What we used to think of each other Show Links Caroline on Instagram @carolinelovesphotos Light the Documentary Film on Instagram @light.thedocumentaryfilm Watch the documentary film “Light” Learn more about eating disorders and get help: www.nationaleatingdisorders.org Get nutrition help from me to feel less stressed about your diet and body image

Alpinist Adrian Ballinger has made a career of climbing the Himalaya’s 8,000-meter giants. Since 2008, he’s summited Mount Everest eight times, including once without supplemental oxygen. He has also climbed other lofty and daring peaks in the region like K2, Lhotse, Cho Oyu, and Manaslu. In this fun and lighthearted chat, Ballinger speaks openly with Shanty and Mary about overcoming family and societal pressure in order to live a life that's true to yourself, and he also talks about the challenges/realities of guiding clients up the world’s highest mountains. But it's not all just earthquakes, avalanches, mountain politics, and global warming. Ballinger also takes us to a fateful encounter on the side of Mount Everest, where he met the love of his life, professional climber Emily Harrington. The couple got engaged last year, and are looking at a December 2021 wedding. Ballinger gives us a peak of what “normal” life is like for these two climbing celebrities.
Emily Harrington is a professional rock climber and adventurer who has been a prominent and leading figure in the climbing community since she was a teenager. Her early years were defined by her successes on the USA Climbing Team on the national and world competition circuit, including 5 US National Sport Climbing Championships and 2 North American Championships. Emily's true passion lies with outdoor climbing and exploring the mountains.Since shifting her focus from the competition, Emily has established numerous first female ascents of 5.14 sport routes, summited Mount Everest, and has been on expeditions all over the world attempting big wall free climbs and high-altitude peaks in Nepal, China, Myanmar, Crimea, and Morocco. In 2020, Emily achieved a lifelong dream and a career milestone, becoming just the fourth woman ever to free-climb El Capitan in one day, and the first woman to ever do it via the famed Golden Gate route. El Cap is the largest piece of granite in the world and stands 3,200 feet tall. One of her two climbing partners during this incredible feat was El Cap “Free Solo” climbing legend, and her friend, Alex Honnold. With a highly-anticipated documentary about her story on the way later this year, only the sky is the limit for Emily. She has appeared on The Today Show, The Joe Rogan Experience Podcast, National Geographic, CNN, NPR, Sports Illustrated, The North Face and many more.Love the show? Last year, Emily Harrington became the first woman to send the Golden Gate route on El Capitan in under 24 hours. It was an impressive feat — almost as impressive as the pain and work it took to get there. Should you ever break a record, that’s most likely what folks will remember. It is, after all, recorded. But what if everything it took to achieve it — including the pain, tears, and partners that came along on the journey — were also recorded? When Emily Harrington sent the first sub-24-hour climb of El Capitan’s Golden Gate route by a woman, most of her fans and followers already watched her previous attempts and training (including two bloody falls and one nail-biting trip to the hospital). And that record of her work to get there paid off: Harrington’s accomplishment blew up across news media — both inside and outside the world of climbing. Even if you’ve watched DangerStikTV, Harrington and fiancé Adrain Ballinger’s adventure YouTube channel, hearing the 34-year-old climber retell her stories of success and near-misses is gripping. And that’s not all: Harrington also gave us her thoughts on the realities of finding health insurance if you’re an elite climber, the Olympics, and the surprising misreporting of her climb.
Jon Glassberg is the owner of Louder Than Eleven, a leading media production company in the Outdoor Industry. He is also a total crusher, having climbed 400+ boulders from V10 to V14. In part one we talked about filming Emily Harrington on her in-a-day ascent of ‘Golden Gate’, about Jon’s early climbing, about pursuing the goal of V15, and about his struggle with a bizarre injury. I am so excited that Emily Harrington and I were finally able to sit down and have this conversation. Emily and I have been wanting to record a podcast together for over a year. We have conversations often where we say, “Why weren’t we recording this?!” Emily is an entrepreneur, blogger, online educator and all around amazing woman. Her main mission is to help other women, especially moms, as she is a mom of two young girls who are only 18 months apart, launch and grow their businesses. We share our thoughts on women in business, the importance of women supporting other women, and how we are both passionate about how what we do with our uterus is no one else's business. Serious athletes are used to digging deep. But there’s pushing yourself, and then there’s what climber Emily Harrington did on November 4, when she became the first woman, and the fourth person ever, to free-climb the Golden Gate route up Yosemite’s El Capitan in a single day. It was an insanely challenging endeavor: a 3,200-foot ascent up the sheer granite wall using only her hands and feet. For Harrington, it was the culmination of a long effort that included a fall on El Cap in 2019, which sent her to the hospital strapped to a backboard. In November, she was just a few hundred feet from the top when she took another bad fall, this time smashing her head. With blood pouring down her face, she had to decide whether she could keep going. In this episode, Harrington talks to Outside contributor Stephanie Joyce about why she’s still terrified at the beginning of every Yosemite season and how falling is what actually allowed her to get to the top. This episode of the Outside Podcast is brought to you by Vermont, a state that is open for the very best in winter adventures so long as you take some extra steps before traveling. This conversation is magical. This week, I am so elated to bring you my chat with Emily Harrington, pro rock climber and adventurer. On Election Night, when most of us were glued to CNN and other coverage, she was making history — starting a free climb of the route Golden Gate on El Capitan in Yosemite National Park. Over the course of the next 21+ hours, she became the first woman to free climb this route in under 24 hours, a huge accomplishment. I knew instantly that I had to have her on the show, ASAP. For episode 137, Emily talks to me all about this impressive goal — from the planning to the execution — and details a super scary moment when she fell during her climb, completely puncturing her forehead. She also gives me some of her backstory — how she got involved in climbing in the first place growing up in Boulder, Colorado — and how at one point she was deciding between becoming a lawyer or taking on the sport professionally. You want some motivation? This episode is full of it. One quick announcement before we get going. He's a huge sports fan and has played sports his entire life, including professional ultimate for the L.A. Aviators. In our intro we introduced our first sponsor (thank you Emily Harrington!), discussed our pumpkin carving with youth group last night, a fire across the street yesterday morning, and talked a little about the Nationals winning the World Series (0:00-13:00). Then we looked at this week's football schedule while getting sidetracked with a couple other topics including Gatorade, Nike, Adidas, and geography (13:00-49:55). We briefly mentioned Steph Curry's injury and the KAT-Embiid fight from last night, then followed a Rootstown, Ohio rabbit hole highlighted by aardvarks and armadillos (49:55-1:00:20). Ryan then filled us in about his history with sports, including being a fan of the Packers, Braves, and Kings, and growing up playing soccer, hockey, baseball and ultimate (1:00:20-1:29:15). Thundercling: A Super Awesome Rock Climbing Explosion Thunderpod
Emily Harrington joins Chris and Brian for the 2016 USA Bouldering Nationals, where they filled a mind-bending 14+ hours of time behind the mics. Brian Runnells and Chris Weidner have been climbing for a long time. They've also been writing about climbing for a long time. Before his identity was finally sleuthed out, Brian was the one-man aggregating super-bot behind the website Climbing Narc. In a torturous twist, you can still visit the page, where the last post logged falls in April of 2015, reading, "Yes, I'm still alive..." In it's heyday, Climbing Narc rallied a massive following and was, at times, the most popular climbing website in the United States. Chris makes his living writing about climbing, no small feat. He's written for most of the major mags, all while logging a climbing-specific column for Boulder's The Daily Camera for 11 years. He and Jason Haas are just wrapping up Weidner's first guidebook effort for Boulder Canyon. In an interesting twist, the commentary "booth" brought the two of them together for Louder Than Eleven's broadcast of the 2015 Psicobloc competition. Like Madden and Summerall, they've worked together ever since. We talk about the experience of commentating for a sport like climbing and how the two of them got into the gig in the first place. We also chat about the famous blooper reels, any chances they'll be commentating for the upcoming Olympics, and how Brian finally contextualized the phrase, "Netflix and chill." Check out a blooper (or highlight??) reel here. Check out a 2014 Thundercling interview with the Narc here. Questions, comments, queries to write for Thundercling or join as a guest? Drop us a line at thunderclingpodcast@gmail.com. As always, thanks to Ryne Doughty for the rad tunes! Happy holidays, gang. Be safe, love hard, have fun! We'll see you all in 2019!!

In episode four of Afterglow, we sit down with Emily Harrington, one of the most accomplished all around rock and mountain climbers of the last 25 years. Our conversation provides a revealing glimpse into the heart and mind of one of the most badass women alive. Not only has Emily climbed some of the hardest 5.14a sport climbs in the world, she’s one of only a few athletes to have free climbed Golden Gate, a 5.13b route on Yosemite’s iconic El Capitan. She has also summited Mt. Everest, been a five-time US National Sport Climbing Champion and been victorious at the Ouray Ice Climbing Festival. Her accomplishments don’t stop there though …. in recent years she has skied off the summit of Cho Oyu (the 6th tallest peak in the world) while achieving a speed record on the coveted and challenging Himalayan peak. She’s an extremely diverse and accomplished mountain athlete who is constantly reinventing her career and challenging herself in new and exciting ways. In our open and honest chat, Emily gives the audience personal insights into her driven, committed and compassionate soul. We talk at length about how her mother’s Parkinson diagnosis has affected her, how she attempts to transparently document her life on social media (regardless of how it looks), how she processes failure in her athletic life and translates it to her daily routine and how she derives happiness and fulfillment from suffering. Together, they live with their dog, named Cat, in Squaw Valley, where they spend their days backcountry skiing, climbing, trail-running, and planning their next international expeditions. In a wide-ranging discussion, they cover the cutting edge of mountain climbing, the environmental costs of global travel, rock climbing’s inclusion in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, and their favorite places to play in California.
